Insane 80's Tracks From The Insane Label
  1. Bene Gesserit - "Rock Yoko" (3:54)
  2. Bene Gesserit - "Tonight" (4:47)
  3. Pseudo Code - "Could It Be A Hit?" (3:06)
  4. Pseudo Code - "Jesus!" (5:44)
  5. Pseudo Code - "Waiting For Zorro" (3:28)
  6. Human Flesh - "Fourteenth Mirage" (4:14)
  7. I Scream - "Nothing To Do" (5:05)
  8. I Scream - "Take Your Headphones & Dance!" (2:42)
Review: A record entitled 'Insane 80s Tracks From The Insane Label' was never going to be boring. Talk about living up to the name, Insane Music means an experimental cassette label from Belgium, managed by Alain Neffe and founded in 1981. He makes music as I Scream, and to put that into wider context his two tracks on this vinyl excursion are harsh distortions with distant bumbling rhythms, and relentless rolls of acid warble and snares the likes of which techno would kill for. That's far from that, though. Pseudo Code present the most accessible stuff here, and that comes in the form of a twisted child of post punk and garage synth pop, veering from the wonderfully bouncy and danceable 'Waiting For Zorro', to the runaway anxiety of 'Jesus!'. Bene Gesserit goes for what David Lynch might do with disco and garage rock, while Human Flesh present a staggeringly effective cacophony of brass refrains.

Renato din Salaj & Ion din Dorobanai
  1. Nu E Injoseala (N-am Carti De Credit) (3:43)
  2. I Love You Viata Mea (Lema) (4:40)
Review: By now Future Nuggets have surely been established as one of Romania's leading exponents of leftfield electronic oddities, and they don't disappoint on the surprising delights of this new 7" from Renato Din Sala and Ion Din Dorobanai. There's an Eastern lilt to the vocals and melodies on both tracks, but they're framed by some wonderfully quirky synth parts and budget drum machines. "Nu E Injoseala (N-am Carti De Credit)" in particular capitalises on cranky monosynth squelch and organ wails, while "I Love You Viata Mea (Lema)" takes a more energetic approach and works some Rhodes-like sounds into the mix.

Time To Be Alive

  1. DJ Ungel - "Xenon" (5:03)
  2. Instrumensch - "Sebb Didn't Get The Job At Fruit Loops" (3:40)
  3. DJ Rasputin - "Liquid Shrimps" (6:37)
Review: Dusseldorf label camdomble are back with a new release for 2020, and it's a various artists split 10" no less. DJ Ungel sounds urgent on lead track "Xenon", ripping through uptempo electro acid with a distinctly dark tint. Instrumensch rolls at the other end of the tempo divide with the slow-creeping, slightly dreamy "Sebb Didn't Get The Job At Fruit Loops". Sealing the deal on this varied three-tracker, DJ Rasputin offers up some transcendental techno with a Goa undercurrent on the flip that will have you reaching for your finest tie-dyed garms.

  4. The Living Daylights (TJF bonus) (4:25)
Review: Leicestershire band In Embrace had a brief but productive run through the 80s that yielded a grip of albums and EPs, but Emotional Rescue have decided to focus on one track on particular. "The Living Daylights" originally came out in 1983, and here we get treated to two alternative mixes from a band who didn't take the transition from live band to studio project lightly. This is angular new wave with dubby undertones at its best. Timothy J Fairplay also steps up on the B side to deliver two choice remixes that vary the intensity from brooding disco dub to lysergic tripper without altering the groove.

  2. Inigo Vontier - "Masicka" (6:29)
  3. Thomass Jackson - "El Hihat" (6:17)
  4. Thomass Jackson - "Naive Song In E Minor" (6:52)
Review: Multi-Culti has invited us to join their "Calypso Cult", a shadowy musical organization with two named leaders. First to set out their tropical pagan manifesto is Mexican maverick Inigo Vontier. He first layers trippy, dubbed-out spoken word snippets and whistling synth lines atop a chugging arpeggio groove on "Jubile Is OK", before reaching for the hand percussion, dark electronics and weird noises on heavyweight throb-job "Masicka". Fellow cult leading light Thomass Jackson steps up to the podium on side B. His message is a little hazier and more spaced out, with the hypnotic eccentricity that is "El HiHat" being followed by "Naive Song In E Minor", a wonderful combination of undulating melodies, locked-in tropical percussion and feverish Balearic flourishes.

  6. 410 (7:53)
Review: While some of the hype surrounding Acting Press may have cooled in recent times, the Berlin-based label remains in rude health. That much is proved by this album-length double vinyl excursion from Intera, an all-star collaboration between PLO Man, Hashman Deejay, C3D-E. The trio starts in stunning fashion with the spaced-out, far-sighted dub techno/ambient fusion of "697", before brilliantly wrapping huggable, ultra-deep chords around a skittish techno beat on "463". They pay tribute to the glory years of Detroit techno on the all-action bustle of "548", while "653" sees them place bouncy, glassy-eyed riffs and Modem-style electronic sounds atop another retro-futurist techno groove. "414" is techno-funk after an extra-strong dose of shrooms and "410" is a superb ambient techno excursion.

Whatever Makes You Feel Safe
  1. Collage (3:25)
  2. Never Release The Tension (5:44)
  3. Ten Years (10:06)
Review: Whatever Makes You Feel Safe is a collaboration between Canadian producer and singer Marie Davidson and Berlin based Ukrainian sound designer Invisible Church. They met in Montreal during Red Bull Music Academy festival and shared the idea of exploring the concept of feeling safe both on a personal level and as a part of society. Quite different from what you'd usually associate with Davidson but still worthy of your attention all the same. Beginning on the A side with "Collage" featuring some chilling drone experiments over textural sound design and field recordings which allow Davidson's haunting vocals to carry the track further into the void. Sounds like a cross between OAKE and Lustmord. Next up "Never Release The Tension" delves further into pitch black territory on this contorted downbeat industrial thriller. Finally on the flip, we've got an epic 10 minutes of haunting esoterica in the form of "Ten Years" and features Theo Parrish on cymbals! The label recommends it as for fans the late Mika Vainio, Black Rain, CTI, and the Bladerunner OST. Pretty on point, if we do say so ourselves!

Review: Following an impressive debut on the excellent Pluie/Noir last year, Yuzo Iwata returns with a new 12" of leftfield goodies on Malin Genie's self-titled label. Preferring to span a variety of styles, Iwata glides gracefully from the dubbed out oddball techno of "Spoit" to the dubstep-inflected delicacy of "Mount Castle", all the while firing off tasteful splashes of FX and noise to create a vivid sonic imprint. "Tiger" is a switch in mood again, whipping up a distorted mutant acid-disco hybrid that defies easy categorization. "Touch" brings things back to a more linear groove, but there's still plenty of space for psychoactive experimentation atop the forthright beat.

  2. Ivory Playground - "Ivory Playground" (6:46)
  3. Atlantis Transit Project - "Bird Perspective" (4:19)
  4. Ramuntcho Matta - "Zoique III" (4:50)
Review: Music From Memory are spending some time exploring the world of music created for dance and performance. There's a common interest in experimentation between the mediums, but not at the cost of musicality, which comes here with a distinct 80s veneer. Gerard Stokkink has a thread of drama and poise about the vivid synthscapes of "Yellow Turtles" while the self-titled track from Ivory Playground calls to mind the delicate fingerpicking guitar you might expect to hear from Alexis Georgopoulos & Jefre Cantu-Ledesma. Atlantis Transit Project have a heavier tribal lilt to the percussion on "Bird Perspective", and Ramuntcho Matta's "Zoique III" holds a mirror up to the freaky disco drum work of Jan Schulte and Niklas Wandt.

Review: Los Angeles based producer Alex Gray aka D/P/I of CHANCEIMAG.es returns, this time on French imprint Shelter Press with more avant electronics excursions on the Composer LP. Thee seven sound collages are said to be an experiment in rhythm, where human error is introduced to basic sounds (such as a djembe or conga) via midi controllers, introducing complex processes and effects which naturally developed into compositions. Gray himself hopes his album "can act as a beacon of creativity for future generations, who are currently being completely saturated by marketing content for products and media that will do nothing but confuse and distract them.

Review: Ryan Hunn AKA Illum Sphere has impressively grown and matured as a producer since making his debut on Fat City back in 2009. His 2014 debut album, Ghosts of Then & Now, was something of a watershed moment, tempering his experimental, bass-heavy dancefloor compositions with a newfound love of cinematic sounds. Glass arguably moves further in the latter direction. While there are some nods towards his club-ready past - see the 4/4 shuffle of "Fall Into Water", or the moody electro bounce of "Fuel The Fire" - it's not the beats that dominate, but rather his evocative chord progressions and IDM style melodies. In fact, it's the more sanguine, ambient inspired cuts, of which there are numerous, that really stand out.

Review: A year after his debut on Chloe's Lumiere Noire label, young Mexican DJ and producer Inigo Vontier is back causing more sonic trouble with his haunting grooves and twisted sound designs. There is a tribalism and mysticism with cosmic overtones to the man's music that makes it utterly immersive and cinematic: "El Hijo Del Maiz" is an aural trip stuffed with creepy details and weird effects that have you looking over your shoulder, as if you're wandering through a haunted jungle in the dead of night. Highlights like "Bo Ni Ke" draw on shamanistic leads, while "Awaken" is the most traditional track of the lot, opting for some trance inducing grooves and dreamy vocals. Whatever he does, it's fascinating.

Review: After quitting Earwig in the early '90s, multi-instrumentalist J. Serge Tardo and vocalist/bassist Kirsty Yates struck out on their own as Insides. The first fruits of their collaborative labour was "Euphoria", a 1993 debut album that effortlessly joined the dots between Michael Brook style ambient, drowsy dream pop, glistening, guitar-laden soundscapes, off-kilter trip-hop and hazy, ethereal West Coast rock. It was a formula that guaranteed plenty of highlights, as this timely Record Store Day reissue proves. Our favourites include the pastoral warmth of "Carly Simon", the Global Communication-esque "Bent Double", the sparse and loose "Yes" and the Steve Reich-influenced bliss of "Distractions".

Review: Back in 2015, Petre Inspirescu popped up on Mule Musiq with Vin Pholie, an album considered a significant departure from his previous work. While he made his name with club-ready, heavily textured takes on tech-house and minimal techno, Vin Pholie saw him work with piano, strings and woodwind instruments for the first time, resulting in a set that sat somewhere between ambient and neo-classical. Vintul Prin Salcii, his belated follow-up, explores similar sonic territory, adding in vintage synthesizers and occasional nods to dub techno - see the becalmed pulse of "Miroslav 3" - to slightly broaden the approach. The result is a melodious sequence of musical movements that also doffs a sly wink to krautrock synthesizer pioneers as well as classical composers, American minimalists and ambient legends.

Review: Following seven sterling 12"s that have established him as a serious player in the garage department, Burnski seals the deal on his Instinct alias with an album that blows the scope of the project wide open. Just listen to the stirring strings of opening track "Frozen" or the jungle-flecked urgency of "Home" and you'll hear new dimensions to the sound revealing themselves with each listen. Steeped in cinematic imagery and loaded with obsessive levels of attention to detail, it's a powerful artistic statement that pushes Instinct to the forefront of Burnski's creative concerns.

Review: artist iridescence debuts on brilliant swedish label blundar - a blend of electronic ambient & abstract electronica subtle reminding of earliest Delsin releases and CIM works... long player with 12 rather short tracks and interludes. limited to 100 hand-numbered copies - artwork by mutantexture.

Review: Isolating only debuted on Optimo Music early this year but now straight off the back of that they come again with a full length record that is fully formed and utterly absorbing. All the usual check words are redolent here - gritty, analogue, lo-fi, dark - but there is also something fresh about these tracks and their subtle rhythms. Their sound manages to conjure a dystopian world but one that is also inviting, with warmth and intrigue around every corner. Creeping moods pervade 'Incarnation' while 'Good & Evil' is a dutty electro banger and 'Unconscious Beliefs' is a new type of techno, amongst other standouts.

Review: Planet Mu usher in the return of Ital Tek and a new sonic approach for the long-term label associate, as Hollowed finds Alan Myson switching up his approach. The chance to immerse himself in a new studio set up was the impetus for Myson to engage in laying down countless hours' worth of loops, drones and textures. It is apparently a method he used as a teenager, but armed with years of recording experience he was now able to make the record he had then envisaged. Fans of the crisp style of dubstep Ital Tek made his name on might be a bit taken aback by this new direction, but there is plenty of fine music to explore here for those that like their sounds abstract and impressionistic.
