Review: Originally released in 1983, Subterranean Jungle would serve as the seventh full-length LP from the brothers Ramone, whilst marking their return to the well of punk rock bangers following the new wave and pop experiments of their two preceding albums End Of The Century (1980) and Pleasant Dreams (1981). Written and recorded during a severely tumultuous time in the band's tenure with both Joey and Marky battling alcohol addiction while Dee Dee was undergoing treatment for his cocaine habit, the resulting tension and resentment to the previously overbearing control of Joey on their previous output, led to a paired down vision with focus solely placed on prioritising grade A punk rock like only the Ramones know how. Their first album to not singularly feature Joey on lead vocals with Dee Dee taking centre stage on 'Timebomb' whilst also handling the bridge on 'Outsider', the more collaborative ethos of the project would, yet again, nearly implode the band with Marky being ousted before recording had even ceased (not playing drums on a Ramones record again until 1989's Brain Drain).

Review: The first volume of a two-part collection, this impressive compilation chronicles the lesser-known recordings from the black leather jacket-clad kings of punk and (more importantly) New York. The two volumes of Rare Ramones present a selection of B-sides, demos and previously undiscovered rarities, with entry numero uno covering the beginnings of the band, starting with the mythical Slug demo recorded in 1977 and finishing in 1984 with early sessions of material that would eventually appear on the latter-day catalogue staple Too Tough To Die. An absolute treat and essential grab for any Pinhead worth their salt.

Review: Captured at Parque O'Higgins in Santiago, Chile, on April 1st 2017, just two months before the release of their ninth full-length studio album Trouble Maker (though the set features no early sneak peek cuts), El Punk No Ha Muerto offers up a fly-on-the-wall earful from California punk lifers Rancid, deep into their seasoned veteran status. Boasting a catalogue spanning greatest hits set featuring classics such as 'Maxwell Murder' and 'Ruby Soho', this live LP is Rancid as they were always meant to be heard. Messy, chaotic, gruff yet underpinned with a poignant precision and internal understanding of live dynamics and audience appeal, this is as close as you can get to the intense camaraderie of one of their incomparable shows without paying the price of admission (for a ticket anyway, no freebies).

Review: The first ever US pressing of the recordings from infamous short-lived homegrown London punks Raped (before their new wave rebranding as Cuddly Toys). Deemed unsignable during their brief tenure and maligned by even their peers within the scene due to their envelope pushing subject matter boasting EP titles such as Pretty Paedophiles, and, Cheap Night Out, released in 1977/1978 respectively, it's a relatively known unknown as to why the band were perceived as too much for even the burgeoning UK punk movement. Distributing their releases through their manager's label, good sales and a cult following couldn't compete with the endless vitriol their mission statement absorbed, ultimately leading to their reformation as the New Romantic scene evoking Cuddly Toys in 1980; a name likely stemming from being the utter antithesis of their previous moniker. The Escalator Hater compilation also completes the entirety of their 77-78 recorded output with the Philes & Smiles Demos Sessions 7", making for an uncompromised batch of snot-nosed, snarling glam-tinted blueprint punk.

Review: In the early explosion of millennial indie-dance, The Rapture were surely one of the best. It helps their roots were in spikier realms on Sub Pop before they connected with James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy. The combination was potent, and Echoes was the dazzling result, with knockout hits like 'House Of Jealous Lovers' and 'Sister Saviour' offset by an album which never misses a beat whichever direction it heads in. 20 years on, it's as brilliantly inventive and downright kick ass as it was upon release, capturing an exciting time when DFA represented a new vanguard in dance music and indie alike.

Their highest charting album, certified triple Platinum in the US, boasts easily their biggest hit single with 'Round & Round', while also offering some equally adored fan favourites such as 'Wanted Man' and 'Lack Of Communication'. This anniversary edition also comes complete with a bonus neon orange vinyl 7" featuring the unreleased B-side bonus track 'Reach For The Sky', recorded during the band's 1983 album sessions.

Review: Decades in the making, Volume 3 serves as the first new full-length from Queens, New York hardcore punk pioneers Reagan Youth since 1990. While their classic 1984 debut EP Youth Anthems For The New Order would later be reissued as Volume 1 complete with additional bonus tracks, Volume 2 would be distributed following the band's initial break up. Crafted and completed by founding guitarist Paul Bakija, before his tragic passing in 2024 following a battle with cancer, Volume 3 is a tribute and testament to the tumultuous life and times of original frontman Dave Rubinstein (better known as Dave Insurgent), who sadly took his own life in 1993 following the death of his mother and murder of his girlfriend Tiffany Bresciani, at which time the couple dealt with severe heroin addiction. Poured over with care from Bakija and led by the feral delivery of new vocalist Madame St. Beatrice, the project delivers breakneck paced, snarling accounts, combining anger and deep concern to a work that ultimately would only see the light of day after none of the original members integral to its make up could live to see it released.

Review: Literally decades long overdue, Volume 3 marks the first new album from Queens, New York hardcore punk heroes Reagan Youth since 1990, following on from their iconic 1984 debut EP Youth Anthems For The New Order, later re-released as Volume 1 with additional bonus tracks, whilst the second volume would be distributed upon the band's initial break up. Inspired by the tumultuous life and crafted as tribute to original vocalist Dave Rubinstein (better known as Dave Insurgent), who tragically committed suicide in 1993 following the death of his mother and murder of his girlfriend Tiffany Bresciani whilst the pair battled severe heroin addiction, the material is further shrouded in misfortune due to the recent death in 2024 of founding guitarist Paul Bakija, who served as primary songwriter working tirelessly on the album for years. Hard-hitting, breakneck paced tracks with zero sign of aging or slowing down, new vocalist Madame St. Beatrice delivers snarling accounts combining rage and earnest concern to a project that many thought would never see the light of day and sadly, literally wouldn't until all original members involved had shifted off this mortal coil.

Review: Real Estate's sixth full-length album Daniel was recorded in an ebullient nine-day spree at RCA Studio A, in Nashville with GRAMMY-winning producer and songwriter Daniel Tashian (Kacey Musgraves). In 11 compulsively tuneful songs, they connect the uninhibited wonder of their earliest work with the earned perspective of adulthood. Several days into recording, all five members of Real Estate were discussing album titles when someone suggested Danielmsimply because it seemed funny to bestow a human name upon a record. Was it for Daniel Tashian? Maybe. Was it a nod to The Replacements' Tim? Possibly. Was it the sign of a band that has now been around long enough to take its music seriously without taking itself or its perception too seriously? Absolutely.

Review: To commemorate the 30-year anniversary of the Canadian Celtic folk-punks The Real McKenzies' inception, 'Float Me Boat' offers a 23-track retrospective look at the band's three-decade tenure, compiled by none other than Fat Mike of NOFX's punkcentric label, Fat Wreck Chords. If you like your punk with plenty of kilt-spinning, bagpipes and anthemic hooks, or you've never ventured further than the Dropkick Murphy's corner of the scene, then there's never been a more ample opportunity to engage in a Celtic crash course.

Review: Red Hot Chili Peppers have found some good form of late with a new album Unlimited Love earlier in the year now followed by a surprise second new album. Anthony Kiedis and co's Return of the Dream Canteen is a second Rick Rubin-produced album. The group said of the album "We went in search of ourselves. A beautiful bit of chemistry meddling that had befriended us hundreds of times along the way. Once we found that slipstream of sound and vision, we just kept mining." This one sounds like classic Chilis with plenty of funk and big riffs as well as great songwriting.

As the album celebrates its 25th anniversary, fans are treated to a visually striking vinyl release. This anniversary reissue edition offers an opportunity to revisit and appreciate the album in a new light. Californication has stood the test of time as a commercial success, with its title track becoming a cultural phenomenon with over one billion views on YouTube. 'Scar Tissue' is also as memorable and instantly recognisable song the band has ever done. The album has many other great moments as well. One of the band's most complete and important releases with the new red and blue vinyl complimenting the artwork perfectly.

Review: After years of dormancy, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry returns with the 'Driving Black' EP, a thrilling prelude to their upcoming album, Strange Kind of Paradise, set for release in February 2025. Their last release, an ultra-limited gig-only affair in 2015, hinted at a long-awaited comeback and this EP delivers on that promise. Featuring six tracks, including two mixes of the title track and the long-awaited 'Chickenfeed', the EP reintroduces fans to the band's signature sound. Known for their distinctive blend of post-punk, gothic rock and industrial influences, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry maintains their trademark steely guitar tones and pulsating rhythms. Chris Reed's deep, gritty vocals resonate throughout, particularly in the compelling mid-tempo 'Piece of My Mind' and the frenetic energy of 'Living With Spiders'. Produced by renowned figures like John Fryer and Simon Ding Archer, the 'Driving Black' EP is both a nostalgic nod to their 80s heyday and a testament to their enduring relevance. The raw, hypnotic energy that defines this iconic band is back and better than ever.

The LA-based instrumental post-rock band match the mood of this statement with their third album; yet another take on their epic, cinematic, sweeping soundworld. Red vinyl, red cover, with homage paid to another self-titled album, these 18 new cuts crunch and slap with the energy of songwriters a third of the median age of the McDonald brothers. Review: DIY pop titans the Reds, Pinks & Purples take aim at the threads of hope with untethered abandon on their new album Unwishing Well. With the project helmed up by songwriter and musician Glenn Donaldson and backed up by collaborators Thomas Rubenstein, Lewis Gallardo, Daniel Pearce and Kati Mashikian, the new LP is a romantic sadcore memory-dive, fleshing out a 90s leftfield pop quintessence and lending it a contemporary production edge. Touchstones like The Go-Betweens, The Smiths, Magnetic Fields and Felt lend well to a terrific outpouring of emotion over ten tracks, which is remarkably frank in its admission of the worst foibles of the music industry and the metaphor for life evoked in this (read: 'Your Worst Song Is Your Greatest Hit').

This new compilation, as the title suggests, brings together some rarities and hard to find tracks from their heyday. Elements of soul, rockabilly, pop and punk rock all inform their tracks and breath new life into the new wave and post punk forms they work in. Highlights include the strident 'Reds Strike The Blues' and fierce 'Young & Proud.'

It came on London Records and now for the very first time since the first time, it reappears on vinyl and CD with new sleeve notes by bassist Martin Hewes. The album came just two years after the band formed but already their soulful songs were packed with passion and political undertones as a result of the band all being members of the Socialist Workers Party. Highlights include 'Bring It Down! (This Insane Thing)' which was the band's only Top 40 hit. The band split the same year this was rebased.

Review: Beyond his most famous work in The Velvet Underground and as a solo rock artist, Lou Reed lived many other lives in and outside of music. While he's not readily recognised as an ambient artist, his early foray into Metal Machine Music proved he was more than capable of leaving traditional song structures behind. The music on his final solo album, Hudson River Wind Meditations, was originally composed as a private soundtrack to his Tai Chi practice, until friends and fellow practitioners asked for copies and he rounded it out as a full album now faithfully presented on clear vinyl by Light In The Attic.

Lou Reed's Berlin is a visceral journey into the darkness of human relationships, now reissued on 180g vinyl. Initially overlooked upon its 1973 release, the album has since gained recognition for its journey into the toxic dynamics of a crumbling relationship, blending autobiographical elements with poetic flair. The album, produced by Bob Ezrin and featuring top-tier musicians like Steve Winwood and Jack Bruce, is a symphony of emotional turmoil set against rich, orchestral arrangements. This reissue, sourced from the original master tapes, brings the album's intricate details to life with unprecedented clarity. Reed's voice, raw and immediate, conveys the torment of his characters, while the musicians' contributions add depth and tension to the narrative. Tracks like 'Caroline Says II' and 'The Bed' explore themes of despair, violence, and regret with unflinching honesty. Berlin remains a haunting exploration of life's darker sides, made even more poignant by its lush, yet ominous, musical landscape, and is surely one of Reed's most impactful works.

Review: What you see before you ranks among the most mythologised live albums (n)ever released. Like the title suggests, it was originally recorded in 1972 at Parisian rock institution Le Bataclan, a legendary venue which would later gain notoriety after a group of armed gunmen opened fire on a crowd in 2015, killing 90 people. But that grisly recent history belies its status as one of the most respected concert halls in the French capital, and this not-quite-Velvet Underground show has contributed to that legacy. Showcasing the stop-you-dead qualities of Nico's staggering (and unique) vocal timbre, the surreal, immersive qualities of the Cale and Reed's legendary art-rock tones, this time capsule had been bootlegged and bootlegged until 2004, when it finally got an official release. Now it's back.

Review: This broadcast was first aired on French TV having been recorded at the Bataclan club in Paris, on January 29, 1972. It got a first official release in 2004 having been bootlegged for many years before that from a recording taken from the sound board at the gig. Fans of The Velvet Underground will know that this was the first time the group members Lou Reed, John Cale and Nico had all been up on stage together.

Review: Light In The Attic teams up with Laurie Anderson and the Lou Reed Archive for a thrilling retrospective, Why Don't You Smile Now: Lou Reed At Pickwick Records 1964-65. An expansive selection of songs all written by Lou Reed, during his mid-60s stint as the staff songwriter for the long-defunct label Pickwick Records, this is a rare glimpse of a master rock musician stepping out of the limelight over the course of 25 songs, yet still letting the form and contour of his voice and sensibility be heard. All this was achieved before Reed had at all launched his career with the Velvets; it may indeed be said that this pubescent 60s period was the firelighter to Reed's flame, as the label specialised in soundalike records that emulated the major pop hits of the day - it's no wonder Reed would absorb such emulations and take them in as his own, albeit with a Century-defining twist. Channelling everything from teenybopper pop to soul-inflected garage rock, whether byJeannie Larimore, The Hi-Lifes or The Hollywoods, we get a thorough look-in here as to what made Reed and his contemporaries tick, and what Reed made tick in turn, before the fame.

Review: Why Don't You Smile Now: Lou Reed at Pickwick Records 1964-65 offers a fascinating glimpse into Lou Reed's early work as a hired songwriter before his iconic days with the Velvet Underground. Released by Light in the Attic Records, this 25-song anthology captures the raw beginnings of Reed's journey in music. The double vinyl format showcases Reed's ability to navigate a range of styles, from the surf-infused doo-wop of the Hollywoods' 'Teardrop In The Sand' to the gritty garage-rock of the Roughnecks' 'You're Driving Me Insane.' This collection not only features Reed's contributions to Pickwick Records, a label known for its budget sound-alike recordings, but also includes the pivotal track 'The Ostrich,' a song that would eventually lead Reed to meet John Cale, laying the groundwork for the Velvet Underground. The anthology also highlights Reed's first collaboration with Cale on 'Why Don't You Smile,' which was later covered by Spiritualized. With detailed liner notes from Richie Unterberger and an essay by Lenny Kaye, this double vinyl release offers a deeper understanding of the roots of Reed's legendary career.

Review: Following on from their crushing 2020 EP, 'Beneath the Canopy of Compost', New York/New Jersey based death-doom new schoolers, Reeking Aura, deliver a punishing, pummelling blend of grandiosity and fury on their debut full-length, 'Blood & Bonemeal.' A concept album detailing the "caretaker of a desolate agricultural property and that person's struggles with morbid psychosis," this is a ferocious blend of doomscaping and death metal brutality, elevated by a three-pronged lead guitar assault. Ambitious and desolate in equal measure, with the cavernous and corrupt colliding in abrasive cacophony, this is essential metal extremity for the most hardened of audible masochists.

Review: There's been an unexpected revival in Sophie Ellis Bextor's music ever since the success of 'Murder On The Dancefloor' in the closing scene of the Saltburn film. Some lesser-known trivia is that she was in a 90s band with DIY pop hero Billy Reeves called Theaudience, who were like a poppier Stereolab. Reeves being the band's songwriter founder and co-producer. They only ever released one album (their second album was rejected by Mercury Records) and Reeves retrained as a radio producer and broadcaster following a near-fatal car crash in 2001. Reeves, however, has been reasserting himself in music since 2023 and is already onto his third solo album, which is a thrilling, idiosyncratic take on electropop. 'Generation Game' is what you imagine the inside of Hunter S. Thompson's head would have sounded like if he was let loose around a Tokyo gaming arcade around the time he was writing Fear And Loathing... 'Let's Not' is Britain's answer to LCD Soundsystem's 'Daft Punk Is Playing At My House'. Elsewhere, 'Bstrds!' has a groove reminiscent of Alabama 3's Sopranos soundtrack and 'Dear Life' is poignant and emotional, offering a terrific counterpoint to the joyous emotions running through this magnificently compiled album.

Review: Rocket From The Crypt mastermind Speedo aka The Swami aka John Reis is a punk lifer troubadour unlike any other, who seemingly refuses to slow down with age. Returning with his second solo sull-length in just 8 months, following on from 2024's All Of This Awaits You, this time he casts a back-line including Jason Sinclair (Hot Snakes), Joey Guevara (Swami & The Bed Of Nails), Jacob Turnbloom (Mrs. Magician) and Glen Galloway (Truman's Water), to help concoct these 11 tracks of chaotic, hard-edged punk rock bangers delivered at a breakneck pace with fist-pumping hooks and a sincerely rebellious attitude to boot (stomp). Chock full of bangers like the feral 'Fed To The Dogs', at 55 years young, Reis is in no way content to rest on his laurels for long, always making Time To Let You Down.

Review: The fifteenth and final studio album by REM, one of the most influential bands of the 1980s and 1990s, came as a triumphant coda for their long-standing career together. The title is noted as the last utterance to ever have escaped the lips of lead singer Michael Stipe on an REM record, tying the bow on a lengthy career while embracing the tide of change. Regarded as relatively upbeat and energetic compared to their balladic former albums, it's a bittersweet goodbye - the likes of 'Uberlin' and 'Oh My Heart', for all their teary jovialty, were never performed in concert, couching the band's sayonara moment in as much mystery as it did finality.

Review: Following the muted reception to 1998's predominantly electronic based Up, alt rock giants REM opted to return to a more traditional style of songcraft with their 2001 follow up Reveal. While still relying on a bevvy of glistening synths, the material exuded a retrofitted approach to their dynamic songwriting, with primary songwriter Michael Stipe rediscovering his creative purpose and voice, even as recently as 2021, referring to the work as his personal favourite of the band's output. Best known for the latter day essential contribution to their back catalogue; 'Imitation Of Life', the project also boasts lush opener 'The Lifting', which served as a prequel to 'Daysleeper' from their preceding LP, as well as standout cut 'Disappear', which came from Stipe's motivating Thom Yorke of Radiohead to overcome his stage fright. This in turn led to the Kid A track 'How To Disappear Completely', which reverted back to Stipe penning his own musical articulation of his communing with Yorke. More than two decades on, this often overlooked gem couldn't be more deserving of a reissue and refreshed ears.

Review: Indie-pop miserbalists REM are indeed rock legends and this live album from Santa Monica back in 1991 - a time when lead singer Michael Stipe still had hair, it is interesting to note - is the perfect example of why. It's an electric set that takes in many of the American band's most iconic tunes, from the wonderful dour 'Losing My Religion' which is perfect lo-fi and ramshackle here, the dark meditation that is 'Half A World Away' and even a cover in the form of 'Love Is All Around'. A great reminder of a great band.

Review: REO Speedwagon's Hi Infidelity, released in late 1980, propelled the Illinois-based group to commercial success, becoming the biggest-selling rock album of 1981 in the US and was eventually certified ten times platinum. The album skillfully balances accessible pop rockers with heartfelt ballads, allowing the band's contemporary sound with roots rock elements to shine. Produced during a period of personal struggles for some band members, the album's cohesive bond is evident in its songs, composed by multiple songwriters facing similar experiences. Tracks like 'Don't Let Him Go' and the iconic 'Keep on Loving You,' REO Speedwagon's first #1 hit, demonstrate the album's chart-topping potential and musical depth. While the first side shines with hits like 'Take It on the Run,' the second offers highlights such as the energetic 'Shakin' It Loose' and the new-wave influenced 'Someone Tonight.' The album concludes with the dramatic 'I Wish You Were There,' featuring Kevin Cronin's impressive vocals and Gary Richrath's stellar guitar work. The success of Hi Infidelity marked the beginning of REO Speedwagon's 1980s pop stardom, paving the way for subsequent albums with a softer, ballad-centric approach. The band's revisiting of the album for reissue further solidified its status as a timeless classic in rock music.

Review: Heavy duty stuff in all senses, The Residents channelled feeling following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the US into this three-part concept album. Divided into 'Loss', 'Denial', and, finally, 'The Three Metaphors'. It's as powerful a listen now as it was back in 2002, when it landed on the ears of art rockers and others shellshocked by one of the most significant political events of the post-Cold War period. While there's always been a melancholy to The Residents, this is particularly audible here, although it's delivered through fascinating juxtapositions - the 1980s funk-esque of 'Wolverines', the Parisian pop of 'The Weatherman', the eerie soundscapes on 'Ghost Child', the Broadway balladry of 'The Car Thief'. A fantastic, dense listening experience, which is only elevated by the true meaning and message.

Review: The self-described "world's most famous unknown anonymous art-concept multimedia pop group" return with one of their most expansive, daring, absurd and bad taste visions to date. Doctor Dark is a project over two years in the making while the concept has been in inception for decades with its overarching theatrical narrative inspired by the real life case of James Vance, the young man from Reno, Nevada who tried to commit suicide with a shotgun in 1985 after listening to Judas Priest and the subsequent unsuccessful, infamous 1990 court case that followed. Combining this with the life of the real "Doctor Death" - Jack Kevorkian; the Armenian-American pathologist and proponent of physician-assisted euthanasia, said to have assisted in the deaths of 130 terminally ill people between 1990 and 1998, you get the culmination of an orchestra-backed punk-opera written in collaboration with co-producer/conductor Edwin Outwater and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Detailed as "a journey into the greasy world of euthanasia, drug abuse and an unhealthy obsession with heavy metal", revolving around "a couple of heavy metal kids (Maggot and Mark) and an insomniac Russian physician (Dr. Anastasia Dark)", the three-act modern theatre piece offers a head-melting sonic concoction of abrasive art-punk stylings emboldened by complex brass and horn work, with a deft balancing act of chaotic yet controlled punk and classical arrangements. With both CD and vinyl versions including a "read-along libretto", with listeners encouraged to read as they listen to the album, as well as a stage adaptation apparently in the works to follow upcoming live tour dates, this just might be The Residents' piece de resistance of avant-garde art-punk multimedia absurdity.

Review: For Left Ear's 35th release, the label revisits the archives of Spanish musician Jesus M' Catalan and his project, Respuesta Alternativa. Unlike his previous release, these tracks, which were created between 1987 and 1990, were recently discovered in a forgotten shoebox. While working as a sound technician, Jesus crafted atmospheric tracks in his bedroom, later refining them with collaborator Julian C. Perez. Their music evolved from simple themes with guitars to incorporating vocal samples. Influenced by his Asturian roots, Jesus blended serene and stormy elements, reflecting the contrasting seas of the Balearic and Asturias Islands, creating unique, enduring soundscapes.

Review: Restless Road's debut album on Sony, Last Rodeo, is a pretty impressive one that features already much loved hit singles such as the title track, fan favourite 'Bar Friends' plus 'I Don't Wanna Be That Guy,' 'Sundown Somewhere' and 'Growing Old With You.' Brand new cut 'Most Nights' is a collaboration with Erin Kinsey is also a standout on an album that was co-written by all three artists and has been a long time coming for fans. It shows fresh songwriting craft and well-honed playing skills as well as plenty of their signature harmonies.

Review: Leather jackets? Check. Sunglasses? Check. A bevvy of stomping anthems? Oh, that's a double check. From the ashes of previous project Home Alone, Italian Ramones worshippers Retarded debuted their retro brand of punk madness in 1998 before their self-titled debut would arrive the following year. Over two decades later, the album has only grown in underground popularity, with Rolling Stone magazine even branding the record as one of the best Italian punk albums of the 90s. Complete with an exclusive bonus track and a polished double-sided insert, there's never been a more ideal time to rediscover an underappreciated gem and add a questionably titled release to your punk wax shelflife.

Review: For fans of Iron & Wine, Michael Nau, and Leonard Cohen, Reverend Baron's Overpass Boy offers a surely irresistible meditation on Los Angeles. Danny Garcia, formerly a pro skater and Drugdealer band member, created this album with a spontaneous mindset. It has worked to date with over 4.4 million streams and 135.4k monthly listeners on Spotify which proves his blend of soul, doo-wop, and East LA grooves is loved far and wide. This album was recorded at various LA locations and tells the story of a young wanderer through poetic observations and longings. Featuring stacked harmonies, gentle percussion, and Garcia's own instrumentals, it captures the city's essence and emotional depth and comes on limited Coke bottle clear vinyl.

Review: With its title paying homage to the seminal 1969 King Crimson album In the Court of the Crimson King, the debut full-length from Finnish doom metal maestros Reverend Bizarre has become a quintessential cornerstone of the movement in the two decades since its initial release. Clocking in at a mammoth 74 minutes with epic cuts such as 'Sodoma Sunrise' running over 13 minutes as well as the gargantuan 21 minute closer 'Cirith Ungol', this is Black Sabbath worship interspliced with moments of macabre grandiosity which have become staples of 21st century psychedelic doom revival. While the group would disband after only three LPs before working on a myriad of later projects together, In The Rectory Of The Bizarre Reverend still serves as not only an iconic debut, but a perfect entry point into the doomsphere.

Review: Modern Finnish doom metal legends Reverend Bizarre only released three full-lengths during their tenure which ran for just over a decade from 1995-2007, and how they were full to the brim, often nearly exceeding the runtime of a CD. Following on from 2002's epic debut In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend (yes, that is a King Crimson reference), 2005's II: Crush The Insects boasted a more upbeat approach to their fuzzed-out, psych-tinged doomgazing machinations, with original copies of the album even bearing a sticker that referred to the trio as "The Biggest Sell-Out in True Doom". Known for having its 21 minute lead single 'Slave of Satan' cut down to 13 minutes in order to fit on the LP, this marks one of the rare instances where a band's single version exceeds the length of their album version. Coming courtesy of leading metal label Svart, this translucent red 2xLP reissue offers doomers, new and old, the chance to plumb the depths of one of the most quintessential doom acts to ever rear their sludgy head.

Review: It's vital that the uninitiated understand one thing about 21-year-old Alexander O'Connor - his infectious and well crafted pop tunes are almost destined to bore a hole into your brain and stay there for quite some time. Like Michael Buble meeting Ed Sheeran at someone's Macmillan Coffee Morning. If that sounds even vaguely off-putting then this one clearly isn't aimed at you. But it is aimed at those who appreciate artists that can switch between a kind of Grammar school rap delivery, croonerdom and uptempo boy band business. From the piano and vocal R&B number "Pluto Projector", to the chart-friendly freight train of "Never Had The Balls" and the light acoustic guitar soul effort "Stressed Out", O'Connor's third studio album "Pony" is an incredibly sweet introduction to an artist who's clearly packing plenty of talent.

Review: The Alexander Technique is the most intimate album to date from Rex Orange County in that it truly reflects his personal and artistic evolution. Initially intended as an exploration of new writing perspectives, it evolved into a deeply confessional and heartfelt work that combines stripped-down r&b and indie-folk and Rex's signature orchestral richness to mark a pivotal shift in his career. Described by Rex as a personal diary, it captures his growth and the complexities of life since his 2022 release, WHO CARES? with a longer duration and diverse musical styles. The Alexander Technique is Rex's most candid and ambitious project to date.

Review: It's Rotherham's favourite sons The Reytons and their new live album! The chart-topping indie band repaid a debt to their hometown by staging an outdoor concert at Clifton Park which saw the humongous crowd being treated to a set full of the band's Arctic Monkeys-indebted indie-rock. This is the recording of their set on the big day.

Review: Emitt Rhodes' self-titled album, released in 1970, proves his pioneering approach to home recording: made in his home studio, it came at a time when union rules mandated that albums released by major labels had to be recorded in professional studios. Ergo, the fact that it was made at home couldn't be disclosed on the cover. Despite this, the original LP featured a playful message in the runout groove, stating "Recorded at Home" in humorous title case. Rhodes had initially intended to call the album Homecooking, but the label opted for his name instead. Using a four-track recorder, Rhodes forged the instrumental tracks before transferring them to an eight-track with which to add vocals, enhancing the sound with a higher-quality microphone - clearly that's as much as grandiose a story as we're getting on the BTS front. The album peaked at number 29 on the Billboard chart, with 'Fresh As A Daisy' peaking at number 54 on the Hot 100, and 'Lullabye' finding its niche in the Wes Anderson film The Royal Tenenbaums.
