Bumble Bees
Cat: FRY 024. Rel: 31 Oct 17
Laverne Baker - "Bumble Bees" (2:30)
Lavern Baker & Jackie Wilson - "Think Twice (Rated X)" (2:24)
Review: For a classic 7" that makes you wish you could have experienced the rock and roll and blues heyday, these two dusty gems by Lavern Baker and Jackie Wilson are a great start. Taken from 1960, "Bumble Bees" by Baker is a chiming, doo-wop sing-a-long love song with a tastefully disgruntled character, while Baker & Wilson provide the excellent and X-rated "Think Twice", which sings about taboo topics like cocaine, pussy and reefa. It also boasts lyrics like 'son of a bitch', 'I aint gonna kiss your ass no more' and 'I've had enough of your shit' - not to mention the other out-there obscenities for the time which include references to oral sex. Lil Kim and Khia - eat your heart out!

Patrick Fitzgerald - "Punch" (3:36)
Jello Biafra & Motorpsycho - "Punch" (3:57)
Review: Two towering labels, Alternative Tentacles and Crispin Glover, break the mould for a momentary merger on this artistic collision of rogue planets: a new split reissued 7" housing that infamous syncretic, Patrick Fitzgerald, Motorpsycho and Jello Biafra, and their twin versions of Fitzgerald's original song 'Punch'. Fitzgerald is best known as a pioneer of folk punk, famously channelling his sardonic wit into a fleeting, light but somehow also epical sound. 'Punch' first surfaced in 2009 as a one-off single released under Crispin Glover's remit; it's now heard once more in both versions, tracking incendiary denunciations of politics on Fitzgerald's part, amid a suicidal, guitar-driven ascension into the air.

Just Another Rainbow (5:34)
Review: Two of the likeliest lads from Manchester team up for the first day release of their new collaborative project. And its something of a full circle moment, with Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher previously citing Stone Roses hero John Squire in a list of formative teenage musical inspirations, who, in turn, first encountered the former when both bands were working the same studio, respectively recording Definitely Maybe and The Second Coming. The pair first shared honours three years after that, co-writing 'Love Me & Leave Me' for Squire's relatively short-lived outfit, The Seahorses, in 1997. Skip forward to 2022 and Squire joined the Gallaghers et al on stage at Knebworth, reprising his appearances for renditions of 'Champagne Supernova' at the band's 1996 shows, spurring the idea to do something together again. Here's the result - and it's precisely what the duo should sound like together.

Ghost - "Hunter's Moon" (3:14)
John Carpenter - "Halloween Kills" (main Title) (1:43)
Review: This latest single by anonymous, masked metal supergroup Ghost hears the band lay down a haunting, straight-up hard rock clanger, in support of the upcoming 2021 slasher film 'Halloween Kills'. 'Hunter's Moon' stops and starts between choral sections erratically, as though the musicians have synchronously taken the same brand of nightmare pill. "I'm dying to see you once agian" is the refrain, carefully double-entendring into deathly, mathy elysium. On the back, John Carpenter's new 'Halloween Kills' theme, a rerun of the '78 classic. It's just as fitting that both songs should be released on limited 7" clear, alabaster vinyl - the colour of blood-drained skin, or brittle ghost's bones.

Green Onions (3:58)
On The Good Foot (4:27)
Review: Floyd James & The GT's 'Green Onions' is one of those seminal classics that defy age and categorisation and makes anybody who hears it move. It has the twisted rock riffs, the nice dusty Hammond organ leads, and a smooth rhythm section that just won't quit. Add in the funky midsection and you have everything you need to get a party started. To be honest the slightly more jazzy and free-swinging flipside 'On The Good Foot' ain't too bad either. Move fast with this one because there are only 200 copies and with this being such a perennially hot tune, they won't last long.

Last Night (7:32)
Last Night (1981 version) (5:25)
How We Started (6:59)
On Your Side (instrumental version) (6:19)
Review: Nacho Marco and Garen Moreno have not released much music as Jet Hammer - just two singles in a decade, in fact - but what they have put out is genuinely superb. Their latest EP, an expansive collection of retro-futurist gems inspired by 12" mixes of the 1980s, is similarly impressive. For proof, check opener 'Last Night', which sounds like the missing link between Italo-disco and the Cure; the Bobby Orlando-era Pet Shop Boys meets New Order wonder of 'How It Started'; and 'On Your Side (Instrumental Version)', which adds an early UK acid house veneer to the shimmering, club-ready extended synth-pop jams of the late '80s. Throw in an alternative new wave/post-punk style '1981 Mix' of 'Last Night', and you have an indispensable package.

Floyd James & The GTs - "Johnnie's Blues" (3:37)
Review: More scorching hot soul sounds here from Original Gravity who look to Jodie and Floyd James and the GTs for their latest dose of 7" goodness. Jodie is in powerful form on the a-side as she delivers an empowering vocal over fast paced and chested-puffed drums that will steamroller all in their wake. This soul anthem has class and depth with some slick guitar solos and big horn energy. Floyd James & The GTs step up on the flip side with 'Johnnie's Blues' which is full of Hammond organ chords and 60s guitar riffs.

Love Is (4:36)
Review: Greg Jolly's 1981 jam 'It's Getting Sweeter' is the subject of this new tidy reissue on US label Enjoy. It's a real deep funk classic that has a lo-fi feel and vocals full of love and passion from both the male lead and the sweet female backers. The chords and drums are gently persuasive and it's a great way to ease yourself into an evening. This 45rpm is backed with 'Love Is' which picks up the pace and has a more funky and propulsive beat with acrobatic falsettos up top finishing it in style.

Transmission (2020 Digital Remaster) (3:37)
Novelty (2020 Digital Remaster) (4:02)
Review: Warner has worked on a run of Joy Division reissues this month and after their most famous "Love Will Tear Us Apart" comes "Transmission" which is not far behind. A 2020 Digital Remaster reboots the sounds but retains the grit and urgency of the original, which is a surging post-punk anthem filled with angst but also a sense of vulnerability and melancholy that makes it so much more enduring. "Novelty" on the flip has a broken beat line, gauzy guitar riffs and is underpinned by an excellent insistent baseline that never lets up.

Atmosphere (4:10)
She's Lost Control (4:45)
Review: All of Joy Division's biggest hits have been remastered and reissues by Warner this month. This particular heavyweight wedge of 12" vinyl offers "Atmosphere", which interestingly enough was first put in March 1980 by the Sordide Sentimental label as a France-only single under the title "Licht und Blindheit". Like "Transmission" or "Love Will Tear Us Apart", it is an essential tune with a real moodiness in the production rom Martin Hamnett. Curtis's vocals have a sense of finality to them that was to prove all too real when he committed suicide not long after recording it. 1979's "She's Lost Control" is an other archetypal, angular groove with the jittery drums that made the band so essential.

Love Will Tear Us Apart (Pennine version) (3:12)
Review: No matter how many times you hear it, you just cannot resist air drumming and foot stomping to Joy Division's most famous hit. It's a track that resonates through the ages, and when you know the story of lead singer Ian Curtis it always takes on extra sombre resonance. Here it gets a special remaster and is served up with the alternative Pennine version which sends the drums into overdrive and mad echo and distortion all make the track that bit more frenzied, intense and essential. The short but sweet, hard hitting post punk banger "These Days" is also included on this heavyweight 12".

Leaders Of Men (2:24)
Review: Some songs are just eternal, no matter how many times you've heard them, and often those same songs are the ones which you never get round to owning on vinyl. It's an easy trap to fall into with Joy Division's most celebrated moment, given the ubiquity of the song, but don't underestimate how special it is to stick on when you need it most. Cleopatra continue their series of seminal songs pressed onto splatter vinyl with this all-time classic, backed up by another non-album essential from Ian Curtis and co, "Leader Of Men'.

Love Will Tear Us Apart (12" remix)
Review: It's hard to untangle this hopelessly sad anthem from the equally tragic death of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis, but if we had to put a bet on it we'd say it would still be hailed as the masterpiece it is now without those unfortunate events. Coming, as it did, after the two albums from the band, it's the perfect half way house between their powerful, guitar-powered sound and the futuristic synthesiser waves that informed New Order not long after. Plus, it's a heartbreakingly brilliant song with lyrics that have spoken to subsequent generations without fail.

Includes the band's best known composition 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' and a superb non-album B-side in 'Leaders Of Men', plus an extended mix of the A-side. Most music fans and their mothers will have had the former track firmly implanted into their grey matter by now, but it's the B-side that really gets the true-heads going, channelling a massive, cortex-cracking sound that is closer to punk than post. Boy, did Joy Division have a toothy side.

9 To 5 (5:33)
Review: It's the debut EP from Speedy Wunderground's visceral funk-punk-rock-garage experimenter Joyeria. First unveiled digitally in October 2022, with such depth on the studio work it's safe to say picking up a vinyl copy is more than recommended, end product having benefited from the deft hands of Dan Carey. For those less familiar, he's also assisted Fontaines DC, Kae Tempest, and Wet Leg on production.
Musically, 'FIM' is like entering a parallel universe of sorts. '9 To 5' is a dance floor filling electro-indie stomper that bores holes to (through?) the mind, 'Colour Film' summons the spirit of Lou Reed and introduces him to Ringo Deathstarr, maybe, 'Performance Review' takes us to a place of grit and societal frustrations, guitars to back that up, 'Decisions' is a stunning piano piece with abstract samples.

Review: Alt rock trio julie hail from LA, and their sound belies their youth. There's a brooding intensity that comes through on Pushing Daisies, as they ratchet down their guitar tone in a crunchy tribute to the grunge era and match it with the ethereal atmosphere of shoegaze. It's an addictive sound that calls back to the likes of Veruca Salt and Placebo, but julie have their own message to impart and this six-track EP is the perfect way to get into them. They're the kind of band to get obsessed with, follow them on tour, get your t-shirt signed and watch them grow from album to album. Catch on early, these kids are going places.

It's an upbeat rhythm that will get you on your toes with its energetic horns and riffs, swaggering drums and superb vocal work. On the flip of this limited 7" is, of course, 'In A While Crocodile'. Invito Al Cielo (20:48)
Hungara Vivo (5:45)
Radio-Amatoroj (28:33)
Review: To call Invito Al Cielo an experimental album kind of undersells just how experimental it is. It also suggests, to the uninitiated, that there's an album here in some shape or form. Of course, the definition of an album is open to some debate - does it need to have a certain number of songs on there? Or is it more about overall run time? Here we have two tracks running upwards of 20minutes (one touching on 30) and a bridge movement at a still-pretty-long six minutes, so take from that what you will. What's really important, though, is the contents. Sonic Youth had already established themselves among the loudest in rock 'n' roll, but also the most adventurous and explorative musically speaking. This outing marked the third in a series of releases on their own SYR imprint, a platform used to push the envelope even further. Masters at noise and walls of sound, much of what's here is proof of just how far you can take drone and refrain with subtle differentiations.

It is the rich heritage of Latin underground sounds he leans on most as he threads together his own edits of classics from that world into two steamy new jams. His vibrant rhythms come peppered with mystic flutes and Latin vocals, psyched-out guitars and soulful melodies that make for truly captivating listening. The originals were chosen for their historical significance and cultural impact and have been sympathetically touched up here.

In 1991, Led Zeppelin and Whitesnake were prolific rivalling bands - both signed to Geffen Records. Out from this parallel kinship, it's no wonder Jimmy Page and David Coverdale eventually met. Their only studio album - consisting of tour rehearsals broadcast live from a London studio - this 2xLP charts an exclusive series of collaborative originals, breaking away from its former relegation to CD format in 2020. Clock additional contributions from fellow Whitesnake and Led Zep members on 'In My Time Of Dying' and 'Rock And Roll', amongst others.

Review: There's almost no point writing about this one - an album that already has legions of disciples waiting to embrace it, with pretty much everyone who knows the names Liam Gallagher and John Squire guaranteed to be interested in what their self-titled LP is about. More so, without even hitting play we all kind of know what it's about, with two of the biggest names to come out of Manchester's 1990s indie rock breeding ground coming together for a record that sounds every bit the sum of its parts. Squire's incredible guitar playing - a centrepiece of The Stone Roses' sound - is incredible as ever, sending riffs soaring over the dilapidated rooftops of North West England and out into the stratosphere. Meanwhile, Gallagher's elongated but gruff vocal style remains steadfast across ten anthems-in-the-making. Powerhouse stuff, but like we said, nobody expected less.

Mother Nature's Song
Review: For indie heads of a certain vintage, this album - a first full-length collaboration between Oasis lead singer Liam Gallagher and former Stone Roses guitar-slinger John Squire - is one of the most hotly anticipated of the year. It was recorded in Los Angeles over a three-week period last year, with former Foo Fighters and Gorillaz studio don Greg Kurstin handling production. As you'd expect, the album is undeniably nostalgic, with Squire's variously funky, raw and bluesy guitar licks and Beatles-esque backing tracks providing a fitting vehicle for Gallagher's distinctive lead vocals. For proof, check recent singles 'From Mars To Liverpool' - where Squires' solos towards the end seemingly soar above reverb-laden backing vocals that accurately pay tribute to the Fab Four - and the more psychedelic Roses-meets-Oasis flex of 'Just Another Rainbow'. There are no surprises, but fans will love it.

Review: The upcoming collaborative studio album between Liam Gallagher and guitarist John Squire is set to shine a refreshed light on the current state of Britpop. Consisting almost entirely of round-bellied rock, leading the charge is the arresting 'Just Another Rainbow' - here the pair are heard in neat unison, painting a picture of unfazed Gallagher-esque nonchalance in the face of a promised utopia - and 'Mars To Liverpool' - concerning the experience of realising a relationship is over before it's too late. Squire and Gallagher make for an exciting pairing, their synergy fleshed out by the album's stellar, full-bodied mix.

Review: The heavyweight trio of Keiji Haino, Jim O'Rourke and Oren Ambarchi return with their 12th and most epic release to date, a triple LP no less. Review: Swiss label Delta Production originally released J&F Quintet's Contrast album back in 1976. It has since become a highly collectible and rare Swiss jazz gem with mint copies going for upwards of L350. For the recording sessions, founding band members Stefan Schneller, Donat Beer and Toni Scha?dler were joined by drummers Gieri Bievi and Peter 'Huck' Hug and bassist Andri A Piorta. Their take on jazz fuses Swiss-Romansh traditions to cook up something in a sound world of its own. Sadly this was the only album the group ever recorded before going off to work on solo projects.

Ten band pout out their last album in 2011 and it featured some high profile guests including Jamie Muhoberac, Chris Chaney from Jane's Addiction, and Patrick Warren. Rob Cavallo (who has worked with bands like Green Day and Linkin Park and Jim Scott (The Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers) both worked as co-producers on the album, which his a real pop rock classic with plenty of big, singalong tunes and epic air guitar ruffs. Review: Australian singer hailing from the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Julia Jacklin, resurfaces with a third album following Don't Let The Kids Win (2016) and Eastwick / Cold Caller (2017). Opening with arguably the album's most afflicting number, "Body", Jacklin's voice almost inhibits an Edith Piaf-like quality, somewhat shaky but resolute. It's far from a forlorn listen though, and while "Pressure To Party" may lament such things as fun, it adds an upbeat rhythm to the album's more down beat numbers, be they "Don't Know How To Keep Loving You", to the lowly piano and voice solo of "When The Family Flies In". Touching on the hallmarks of a true romantic, Jacklin's music is melancholic as ever, but with her vocals only adding to the warm embrace of the instrumentation, "Crushing" should melt a few hearts yet.

Her reputation as a fine - and direct - lyricist is cemented now and together with bassist Ben Whiteley and guitarist Will Kidman, she's made an album that further enhances it. Having been penned after getting back from her latest giant tour, it perhaps understandably addresses relationships and work-life balance. both featureing. Plenty of new terrain is explored making this another fine record.

Reissued and remastered for 'extreme sound quality', Joe Jackson's 'Body And Soul' finally gets the look back it deserves. Named ironically after Johnny Green's classic American jazz standard of the same name, Jackson's music at this point wasn't straight-up jazz, but rather jazz-intoned pop and latin, carefully constructed to only merely allude to the style. And than whirling uninventively through standards, too, the solo vocal wizard here crafts his own songs, from the sultry buzz of 'Loisaida' to the drum-clattering, brass-bursty hit single, 'The Verdict.'

It was the band's third album released back in May 2003 on Ninja Tune with all songs produced by Jorgen Traeen as well as plenty of musicians playing saxophone, flute, clarinet, acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards and viola amongst much more, which means it is a texturally, melodically rich album with plenty of soaring highs and emotional themes that ebb and flow in captivating fashion. Review: This Australian and now London-dwelling three-piece made their name by balancing out their psychedelic explorations with a somewhat Madchester-derived pop sensibility, and this second album sees them throwing this delicate balance into orbit by effectively offering more of everything - the sonic textures here are more adventurous, the hallucinogenic swirls of sound more lustrous, yet the choruses are as indelible and infectious as ever. A party album with a 'Screamadelica'-esque experimental edge, 'Every Now And Then' makes these three space cadets sound like genuine contenders.

This new album finds him revisiting some old ground: it takes him back to influential PiL 1979 album Metal Box, which he wholly reinvents with a load of new and sophisticated dub takes with all new and mind expanding production. Alongside the original tunes are two bonus cuts which are new versions of originals from the first ever PiL album. It adds up to a timelsss fusion of new and old indie and dub from this masterful guitarist.

Review: Bassist, artist and (post-)punk polymath Jah Wobble is perhaps best known for his work with Public Image Ltd, but his many solo records are the real cream of the crop. Now adding to the Cleopatra catalogue, Wobble returns to drop a full-on psychic battering ram (and play on the name of a ubiquitous cosmological classic by Stephen Hawking), his Brief History Of Now. It's a dystopian album full of buzzing urgency and as ever comes packed with Wobble's latter-day spoken word segments, which rail against the contradictions of modern life. Co-written, produced and performed with Jon Klein of Siouxsie & The Banshees fame, it's a thoroughly varied project, speaking of liberation, demonic entities, and karmic retribution - somtimes in dub, sometimes not - and even throwing in a curveball cover of Wire's 'I Am The Fly'.

Review: Jah Wobble has taken his musicianship far and wide since he first rose to prominence in the glory days of post-punk and new wave. He's more readily associated with dub and international musical fusions than rock, but on this new album for Cleopatra he's returned his focus to the spiky energy bursts of his earlier work with Public Image Ltd. Produced with Jon Klein of Siouxsie & The Banshees, A Brief History Of Now covers a lot of ground and revels in allowing all kinds of influences in without losing focus. This is a set of kick ass rock tunes first and foremost, but there's space for subtlety and humour to make sure you know it's Wobble at the controls.

Review: The 18th album from James, whose career spans over four decades, emerging in the C86 era of indie, coming to prominence as part of the Madchester movement but establishing and holding onto a loyal fan base and critical acclaim with their unique blend of alternative rock and dream pop. The band work in unique ways to keep things fresh and this is no exception, bringing us "the tracks that didn't make it to the next stage" before now. A significant milestone in their musical journey, showcasing the band's continued evolution and creative prowess, it encapsulates a wide range of emotions and themes, exploring personal experiences, societal issues and the human condition. James' distinct songwriting style is evident throughout, with thoughtful lyrics and introspective reflections, while musically, the album features the band's signature atmospheric soundscapes, ethereal melodies and intricate guitar work.

Review: Studio album number three from mighty Manchester icons James could not come soon enough back in 1990. In the run up to the grand unveiling, we'd had outright anthem 'Sit Down' released as a single during summer 1989, a rousing bombshell of a track that still kicks today, and at the time suggested something very special was waiting in the wings for fans, and legions of new recruits the band were garnering.

When Gold Mother finally landed the reception was understandable - not least when we look back at the group's storied career to date. As a record, this might be the highest concentration of James' best songs you'll find anywhere, with tracks like 'Come Home' and 'How Was It For You' helping secure a place among the finest long players of the 1990s.

Review: Blues great Elmore James was known for a couple of things, musically at least. King of the slide guitar, his penchant for the instrument is obvious. Meanwhile, his love of playing loud, in turn getting the most out of that powerhouse voice, is perhaps less apparent when listening now, 60 years after his death. A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-r since 1992, his backing band would eventually comprise two musicians who played with the legendary Tampa Red, whose songs James also had a habit of recording. Blues After Hours is certainly definitive James stuff, a raw, drawly, barroom of a record that sees the artist and his accompaniment invoke memories, borrowed and owned, of hot evenings in Deep South bars. Sadly lost long before his time, dying from a heart attack in 1963, just days before a European tour that would have catapulted his name globally, this is a fantastic memento of true legend.

Review: The arrival of this first solo album from the My Morning Jacket frontman may have come as a surprise to some, given the fact that the band appears to be created so much in his image - what other sides of his personality exactly does he have to express? Quite a few as it turns out, as 'Eternally Even' crafts a seductive tapestry from narcotic mix of soul, funk and psychedelia, somewhere in spheres of consciousness between Isaac Hayes and The Flaming Lips, whilst offering his most explicitly political lyrics to date. The Trump victory may have rendered some of the sentiments herein a tad bittersweet, yet the hazy soundscapes and honeyed vocals have lost none of their lustre.

Review: You have to hand it to Japan - the English new wave band, not the country. Despite only having released two (admittedly very successful) albums before 1979's Quiet Life, the group really knew what they wanted by this point. So much so they enlisted the legendary disco creator Giorgio Moroder to produce standalone single 'Life In Toyko', setting out a new stylistic blueprint moving from glam rock to synth, only to drop the revered producer before hitting the studio to make this record.

In the end that duty fell on Paul Hunter (Roxy Music, Slade) and Simon Robert Napier-Bell (Ultravox, Marc Bolan), and the result was a Gold record selling well over 100,000 copies upon release. Now forming the centrepiece for this epic special edition box set, which boasts a host of remixes, live versions and Moroder's take on 'Life In Tokyo', you'd be crazy to miss out.

It was in 1982 that Japan headed to, well, Japan, to play the last leg of their tour having achieved plenty of chart success including nine Top 40 UK hits. The recordings here capture their last ever live shows from December of that year and they were broadcast across the country on radio. They have never been on vinyl before now as the entire show is presented in two essential volumes.
