Resivior Dogs Vol 1
  1. Big Strick - "Family Affair" (feat Omar S)
  2. Genereation Next - "Windsor Nights"
  3. Reckless Ron Cook - "Night Moves"
  4. Big Strick - "Armed & Dangerous"
Review: Leonard "Big Strick" Strickland is perhaps best known for his family ties with Omar-S (they're cousins), though his productions are well worthy of praise in their own right. Here, he offers up a sampler 12" featuring cuts from his recent (and excellent) Reservoir Dogs LP. Perhaps the most noteworthy cut is "Family Affair", a lovingly constructed chunk of hypnotic, melodic deepness written with Omar-S. That said, Strick's solo effort "Armed & Dangerous" - a winding chunk of voodoo techno - is arguably better. The mazy techno-funk of Reckless Ron Cook's "Night Moves" is also outstanding.

  2. Danny Faber - "Hampi" (7:10)
  3. Phonique, Fairplay - "Zatar" (6:45)
  4. Martin Waslewski - "Dimensionen" (6:36)
Review: Berlin's Bar 25 was a real haven in the German party capital. It's reputation lives on strong in the label releases, the latest of which is a celebratory various artist affair. Kiki kicks things off with a heads down tech house stomper that undulates just enough to keep you in the groove.
Danny Faber's 'Hampi' is a headier affair, with suspensory synths keeping you locked on edge and then Phonique and Fairplay link for the more tribal and mysterious sounds of 'Zatar'. Closing out this party-ready EP is Martin Waslewski with the far-gazing chords and twinkling retro future keys of 'Dimensionen.'

The Pele Release (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ROTH 14. Rel: 10 Oct 17
  1. Cobble Jam
  2. Woman For A Day
  3. Woman For A Day (Clandestino Dessert Trance remix)
Review: We have been patiently waiting for Pele to crop up on a release from the footy mad Rothmans, and what a time to play that card! Rothmans is back once again with his Aussie teammate Dawn Again, supported by a first appearance from Leeds legends Clandestino. EP opener 'Cobblejam' is nothing short of first class, a worthy and chugging Italo powerhouse that leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination. The B-side finds us with the strangely named 'Woman For A Day', though there's nothing strange about the track itself, a deep and dark cut that slowly drives forward into the abyss. Finishing off the record is an excellent remix from the lads over at Clandestino, their 'Dessert Trance' vibe brings the record together as sweetly as Pele brought together that 1970 World Cup Winning team.

  2. Reggie Dokes - "Cause A Stir" (4:31)
  3. Reggie Dokes - "Boogie Down" (3:41)
  4. Manuel Costela, Rafa Santos - "Driving To The East" (6:46)
  5. Manuel Costela, Rafa Santos - "Rise On Chords" (6:54)
Review: So far Spanish label Mate has showcased the sounds of Gari Romalis, Rafa Santos, Javonntte and Jesus Gonsev, and now the third installment brings another smartly picked split from Reggie Dokes and Manuel Costela working alongside Santos. Dokes is sounding fly on the A side, not least in the tumbling glass keys of "Walk In The Light" and oh-so-sweet strings of "Cause A Stir". Costela and Santos settle into the groove on the flip with the soul-charged "Driving To The East" and the uplifting snap of "Rise On Chords". This is tasteful deep house in the vein of labels like Downbeat and Sistrum - all machine soul seekers take note.

  2. Carlo - "The Swindler" (6:32)
  3. Hotmood - "Magical Flight" (5:57)
  4. Rees - "The Way You Move" (6:04)
Review: We may not be able to gather to dance outdoors under a blazing sun or a blanket of stars, but there's no harm in a little musical daydreaming. That's what the latest multi-artist Ravenelli Disco Club release is all about: summery escapism that comes with a big dollop of rush-inducing disco release. Ethyene sets the tone with the colourful boogie-house fusion of "Let Love" - all twinkling synth motifs, echoing percussion hits, thickset grooves and hazy vocal samples - before Carlo raises the temperature via some jazzy deep house heaviness in the vein of Derrick Carter's "boompty" era. Over on side B, Hotmood's "Magical Flight" is a surging, string-drenched disco-house roller, while Rees' "The Way You Mood" is a tooled-up take on what sounds like a classic Philadelphia International cut.

  3. Reggie Dokes - "Earth, Wind & Fire" (6:03)
  4. Luv Jam - "Grarf" (7:12)
Review: On this second 12" celebrating the label's tenth birthday, We Play House boss Red D has assembled a stellar line-up of sought-after and unreleased cuts. The EP begins with a second airing for FCL's Adonis-influenced, retro-futurist gem "More Than Seven" (first released back in 2010), before the previously unheard DJ Longsleeve bathes us in the soapy, relaxing waters of blissful deep house shuffler "Ode Aan De Filosofie". The quality threshold remains refreshingly high on side B, where Reggie Dokes' loose and positive piano house jam "Earth, Wind and Fire" is followed by the intergalactic, acid-fired pulse of Luv Jam's superb "Grarf".

  3. I'll Take You In (BDTW Deep mix) (7:01)
  4. I'll Take You In (BDTW Vox dub) (7:39)
Review: Fred Everything's profile may not be as high as it once was, but he continues to serve up high quality treats - as this surprise collaboration with legendary vocalist Robert Owens proves. The latter is in fine form on the EP-opening 'Classic Mix', a warming, musically detailed chunk of vocal deep house positivity that sounds like it was partially inspired by Dubtribe Soundsystem classic 'Do It Now'. Fred Everything also provides two 'BDTW' mixes on the flip: the fluttering synths sounds and vintage Chicago house grooves of the 'Deep Mix', and a more stripped-back 'Vox Dub'. Best of all though is Martin 'Atjazz' Iveson's rework, which recalls the fluid synth sounds, jazzy flutes and intricate percussion programming that marked out his early 2000s work on Mantis Recordings.

Review: Benedikt Frey heads this latest offering from the Batti Batti label, teaming up with jonas.san for "Girl From Venus", which pair the former's signature raw drums with the latter's outtakes of muted trumpet. Complementing this, Batti Batti's own Owen Jay & Melchior Sultana lay down a typically deep atmospheric houser with a few twists and hidden melodies in the shape of title track "Tribal Roots" and the 12" is further embellished by productions from debutant Lars Behrenroth and Mexican duo Romeo C & Alhan G who have previously been featured on a digital Batti Batti release.

  2. Williams - "Pinball" (Fort Romeau mix) (6:12)
  3. Roy Comanchero - "Hypba" (6:02)
  4. Kevin Griffiths - "Satori" (5:46)
Review: Tsuba's ten year anniversary - that's right, it has been that long already - has been marked with hit after hit from a wide selection of artists from across the house kingdom. In fact, for this 2nd instalment of the festivities, we have White Material frontman Galcher Lustwerk remixed by the inimitable Jimpster, with the latter putting a more starry-eyed mechanic onto the original; For Romeau complete the A-side with a vintage-sounding remix of "Pinball" by Williams. On the flip, Roy Comanchero drops the Chicago bass over a minimal sort of percussion groove on "Hypba". Kevin Griffiths adds a little acid to the jingly 707 beat of "Satori", and completes a stellar EP from the magnetic Tsuba.

  3. Robotalco - "No More Disco" (4:51)
  4. Klubbhuset - "SS0817" (6:11)
Review: The high grade, leftfield approach to house music Lyssna have set out as their MO continues in fine style on this new Colours series, starting with the Yellow EP and a strong cast of characters from the outer reaches. Riciar Ghir opens up proceedings with the tumbling deep house of "Cargo", making the keys dance with distinction and injection a subby rumble where it counts. Minimal Afrika follow that up with a percussive tryst entitled "Drakma Queen" that blossoms into a sumptuous ambient excursion. Robotalco takes a very different approach with some classically pumping sample-powered house music to shake feel-good fists to, and then Klubbhuset finishes up with an impassioned romp through peak time disco licks for the peak of the night.

  2. Freudenthaler - "Bel Air" (6:25)
  3. G. Markus - "Cherchez Le G" (6:58)
  4. Reece Johnson - "Montreux" (5:48)
Review: Sheffield's Moment Cinetique has laid down a distinctive MO within the deep house field, favouring dusty, sample-heavy rollers from a close circle of artists. On this various artists release they call on friends new and old, leading in with Felipe Gordon's rolling and tumbling "Rio" which is as crooked as it is funky. Label mainstay Freudenthaler has some choice jazz licks strapped to an irresistible beat and wandering bassline on "Bel Air", while G. Markus channels a touch of Moodymann vibes on the looped up, feverish "Cherchez Le G". Reece Johnson takes things smooth and smoky on the top end of "Montreux", but flips it with a gritty kick drum to lend the track some rugged weight for the dance.

  6. Acidboychair - "The End (At Any Speed)" (4:48)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Gravity Graffiti has been doing great things with its series of split 12"s already, but now the Italian label goes one better for its tenth release with this mighty double pack of heavy hitters. First up is the ever-untouchable Yoshinori Hayashi, who gets as straight up as he possibly could with the freaky house burner "Dissociative." Telephones is feeling particularly dubbed out and groovy on "Kalimbalimbo", while DB.Source and Riccardo Schiro take things strung out and textural on "Montevago". Dynamo Dreesen is in rave mode for the pepped up and delightfully weird "Reactivate", leaving the final side to Oyvind Morken & Kaman Leung's chugging "Tunnel Visjon" and the rubbery side swipes of Acidboychair's "The End (At Any Speed)".

  1. Hiver - "Itria"
  2. Artefakt - "Wanderings"
  3. Hinode - "Vision"
  4. Region - "Cosmic"
Review: Jaunt Records' 10 year celebrations are spanning a series of 12"s that feature a broad spectrum of artists searching for the ultimate deep techno fix. The four contenders that occupy this Sea release all have their own agenda, but they sit together perfectly. Hiver weaves illustrious pads in between nimble electro drums and bubbling acid bass, while Artefakt creates eerie, fractured acid meanderings to send a shiver down your spine. Hinode does some deft break choppage to create a dreamy trip for the up all night crew, and then Region rolls the record out on an emotive tip while keeping the rhythm section pumped up for the floor.

  6. Session Victim - "Gheister" (2:10)
Review: The second sampler for Rhythm Section International's fifth anniversary compilation has landed, and like its predecessor is packed to the rafters with must-check gear. Duke Hugh kicks things off with the short-but-sweet, Rhodes-powered soundscape "Zoe", before Research Club delivers some bubbly pitched-down acid ("Cafe Iguana") and Paula Tepe jams out some quirky proto-house goodness ("Panamericana"). Over on side B Jad Lee (as Jad & The) takes over with some deep, reggae-influenced breakbeat house, before handing the baton to Shy One with the deep, bruk-up dreaminess of "House Party". Session Victim provides a fittingly strong conclusion with the quirky deep house drowsiness of "Gheister".

Review: From Kon's forthcoming compilation on BBE entitled Kon & The Gang, this 12? sampler features two cuts taken from the LP and an exclusive remix from Boston producer and mix engineer Caserta, namely "Timeless" (Caserta mix)" a tasty serving of super deep and low slung disco goodness. Review: Hudd Traxx 3rd installment of their 10th Anniversary series comes from Eddie Leader, Hector Moralez, Washerman, Brett Johnson & Rhythm Plate. Label owner Eddie Leader delivers a deep & moody house groover with the slick vocals of long time Hudd Artist Hector Moralez, aptly title 'Way Back'. Washerman picks the pace up with 'Twilite', which is reminiscent of legendary Detroit label Underground Resistance, and adds to the continued diversity of this project. Brett Johnson's 'Mr Smarty Pants' is re-released after gaining plays from the likes of Laurent Garnier and an edit by Dyed Soundorom. Closing out the EP are 2 of the most underrated Producers in the business; Rhythm Plate. 'Keep Moving' was Overshadowed by 'Inside Me' on the 'Robbin Hudd EP' in 2007 but is given it's time to shine on 'Now & Then Part 3' and is a fine addition to the 10 Year celebrations.

  4. Ray Kandinski - "Where U At" (5:22)
Review: Back in the autumn of 2016, Karl Lumont and Ray Kadinski joined forces for a collaborative contribution to the very first Strictly Lo-FI label release. Here they're reunited by The Other Planet label, which has wisely decided to offer them a side of vinyl each to showcase their wares. Lumont handles the A-side, first serving up the gently jaunty melodies, swirling background sounds and fiendishly loose and lo-fi deep house beats of "Cloudy Mountains", before travelling space-wards via the gently intergalactic "Blue Flamingo". Kadinski picks up where his friend left off with "Waste My Time", a hypnotic and starry chunk of heads-down deep house. Arguably even better, though, is lo-fi deep house stomper "Where U At", whose cheap drum machine hits sound both crunchy and wickedly metallic.

Review: Bielefeld, Germany's Deep Inspiration Records endeavours to present the best of house, slo-mo, disco, soul and chill - in the words of the record label head 'expect the unexpected.' A clutch of most welcome newcomers appear on the aptly-titled latest EP from Deep Inspiration Show Records - it sure feels like a family affair. The arcane and hypnotic minimal house vibe of 'Reversed' by Melchior Sultana with Janelle Pulo rules the A side in fine fashion. On the flip, there's the hazy and blunted jazz bar loops of Jan Kincl, Borut Cvajner & Regis Kattie's 'Paint It Black' (getting that Max Graef/Glenn Astro vibe in effect) and closing it out is Dan Piu with the shimmering Alleviated style vibe of 'A Beautiful Day' awash in FM synth tones.

  4. Iner - "Awesomeness" (6:10)
Review: After years of quality digital releases, Russian house label Moiss has branched out into the vinyl world with some particularly fruity various artist releases. Last year's excellent Strawberry Jam EP has now been followed up by the Pineapple Jam 12", featuring an all new cast of house hopefuls with plenty to say. Zito Mowa's 'Ndo Neta' and Replika's 'On My Mind' twist up dusty piano samples and lo-fi drums in artful loops that draw you right into their atmospheric sound worlds. Sune & Vitamin D bring a rhythmically snappy but sonically smoky combo to 'Coastal', and 'Awesomeness' by Iner has some fun with a classic Commodores sample and some powerful piano chops.

  2. Ewan Jansen - "Sinders" (6:06)
  3. Reedale Rise - "Coral" (5:30)
  4. Owain K - "Teifi" (5:56)
Review: After two stunning rounds that featured the likes of Mark Hand, Lerosa and A Sagittariun, Bristol label Innate returns with another various EP of advanced techno ruminations from emergent talent and established names alike. Perseus Traxx leads in with a dense and expressive body popper that channels a little vintage B12, while Ewan Jansen takes things deep and aqueous with the gorgeous "Sinders". Rising electro star Reedale Rise serves up more of his sleek and refined machine funk on "Coral", and label boss Owain K unfurls a shimmering blanket of melancholic house with the sublime "Teifi".

Cat: DOLFINRECORDS. Rel: 31 Jan 18
  1. Call This Something (Seven Davis Jr edit) (5:43)
  2. Take Tayke (Seven Davis Jr edit) (6:22)
  3. Plugged Up (Seven Davis Jr edit) (6:40)
  4. Socks Soxxx (Ben Hixon edit) (4:47)
Review: Dallas dudes Dolphin Records have largely impressed since launching at the tail end of 2016, largely by delivering releases that explore the outer reaches of jazz, funk, soul and psychedelia. On this 12", they present a slew of fresh re-edits of tracks from one of their finest LPs to date, Rache's eccentric, free-jazz-with-house-influences set Halepenos. Seven Davis Jr is the man at the controls for much of the EP, first provided a deliciously wonky, slipped P-funk meets-J Dilla-via-Mo Kolours take on "Call This Something" before unfurling a super-dusty, hypnotic deep house version of "Take Tayke". Arguably even better is the lo-fi, sub-heavy deep house soul of Davis's "Plugged Up" interpretation, while Rache member Ben Hixon's re-edit of "Socks Soxxx" is a skewed, mind-altering deep house bumper.
