Review: Originally released in the spring of 1972, the one and only demo-album from Pasadena, California proto-metal outfit Sudden Death has gone on to become a work of psychedelic doom legend, with the band of relative youngsters even becoming finalists in the nationwide "America's Answer To Black Sabbath" artist search once upon a time. Review: Originally released in 2003, Self-Destructive Pattern served as the third full-length from Los Angeles industrial-tinged nu-metal outfit Spineshank, and had the unenviable task of following up 2000's breakout sophomore effort The Height Of Callousness. Reuniting with legendary producer perfectionist GGGarth Richardson (Biffy Clyro, Rage Against The Machine) to help push their style into simultaneously more electronic aggression whilst elevating their melodic scope, the album offers a curious time in the nu-metal landscape where artists were searching for a sonic way out of their restrictive genre confines. Lead single 'Smothered' was also nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance 2004, yet ultimately lost to Metallica's St. Anger.

Marking their fourth record to date, and first in five years, the opening track to 'Seven Crowns And Seven Seals' is a bold statement defining the group's approach and ambition. Just like Lovecraft invented a whole world of unspeakable creatures and supernatural horrors during the early 20th century, Sulphur Aeon, more than ever, dug deeper into their own artistic range, crafting an album of equal otherworldly beauty and impact.

Review: At the turn of the 21st century, Slipknot opted to take the newfound fame and success rewarded by their self-titled debut, and run it into the ground in, what has to be, one of the most intriguing examples of chaos and inner band turmoil lending to an integral work.
Named after their home state, 'Iowa', still remains an utterly frightening project, driven by addiction, depression, and encompassing negativity. Refusing to pursue a more accessible route regardless of the ensuing momentum around them, the collective would lash out with an extremely severe batch of material that remains challenging even by today's standards.
While the now iconic leads singles, 'My Plague' and 'Left Behind' remain embedded in the metal spectrum, deeper cuts such as the caustic 'People = Shit', nihilism rally of 'The Heretic Anthem' or the decrepit defeatism of 'Skin Ticket' offer the bleakest look into the band's psyche at their most temperamental of conditions.
The fact that frontman Corey Taylor has confessed that the 14-minute closing title-track was recorded while highly inebriated and cutting himself with a broken liquor bottle, should be all the background one could need when approaching this complex, unforgiving beast of an album.
Reissued after far too long an absence, this beautiful new rendering finally allows for a timeless endeavour to be rediscovered in all of its violent glory; rarely bridging the vast dichotomy between mainstream and extreme metal.
