Dance (Louie Vega dance ritual mix) (11:26)
Dance (Louie Vega latin soul mix) (9:34)
Review: The 3 Winans Brothers project is made up of Bebe Winans and Daniel Weatherspoon, who appear here courtesy of Masters At Work legend Louie Vega...on his very own Vega imprint! Their "Dance" tune features The Clark Sisters on backing vocals and is herein remixed twice by Vega: the first is the "dance ritual mix", a soulful house cut with an r&b twist, while the "latin soul mix" focusses more heavily on the house beats and it's a more typical Vega tune which could feature in a typical Vega set, rotary mixer and all!

Gargoyle Records: Aliens On Acid

Alienage - "Mindreader" (4:30)
The Madd Scientist - "Funky Dreamz" (6:38)
DJ Who - "Shitty Samples On Acid (On The Rocks)" (5:37)
WhoDonIt - "House Rhythm" (4:59)
Review: Destination Baltimore 1995, Alienage (AKA Tony Pegas and Don Corrieri) indulged in a little lysergic and sonic experimentation. The results were a series of seriously heady club bangers released on Gargoyle and they still sound fat as hell 25 years later. This latest reissue sees Alienage take the lead with necksnap electro breaks, a sultry vox and buckets of sub before Pegas goes solo with his Madd Scientist alias on the b-boy style 'Funky Dreamz'. Flip for two from Who: the slamming TCR-style breaks of 'Shitty Samples On Acid' and an earlier 90s-style, heavily layered, slightly proggy jam 'House Rhythm'. Keep watching the skies.

Just Won't Do (Mowgli remix)
Review: Bringing back the Tim Deluxe classic in all it's Latin house glory, newly formed Italian group APDW (made up of producer's Matteo Esse and Sant) hit hard with their version of "Just Won't Do". Keeping the brilliantly nagging trumpet line from the original, APDW flesh it out over their radio and vocal edits into a beast of a track that's both huge but also keeps the subtle and sultry flavour of the original. Mowgli adds an extra trumpet specially recorded for the mix, while ATFC and Warren Clarke team up to bring a Baltimore meets soca swing to the drums. Paul Jackson goes the other way and gives the tune a fully tech'd out beat and a gloriously long build-up.

Review: First released a decade ago and revisited periodically ever since, Arftul and Ridney's collaboration with UK soul queen Terri Walker is a 21st century house classic. This 10th anniversary edition - released in limited numbers for Record Store Day 2023 - pairs fresh revisions with classic reworks. Michael Gray steps up with a funk-fuelled, disco-tinged revision, before the insanely talented Opolopo opts for a deeper, jazz-funk-flecked revision that's as classy as it is soulful. Elsewhere, Eric Kupper's 'Directors Cut Tribute To FK' version is a strings-and-piano-laden treat, while Ridney's own 'Rework' is a tasteful, piano-sporting deep house shuffler.

Review: This Rootz release is the ultimate result of an Atlantic collaboration between artists High Spies (San Fransisco, USA) and Alex Romano (Amsterdam, NL). Reinforced with the vocal talents of Tony Lindsay, this is the one-and-only solid garage house version of Johnny Kemp's 1988 hit. Don't let nobody fool you, this is the summer tune that will keep the people rockin' on the dancefloors. Includes sublime remix by Olav Basoski, Alex Romano and Stonebridge! Rootz Records, founded by Olav Basoski together with his 'compadres' Alex Romano and Silverius, is the house label that explores the roots of it’s genre, setting out on a new direction beyond current musical borders.

Review: Benny Benassi first presented 'The Biz' and their global smash 'Satisfaction' back in 2002. Almost two decades later the rasping bassline is as iconic as it ever was with the robotic vocals hinting at the French touch scene that pre-dated the release by a few years. Here it comes again no doubt to great receptions from the next generation of party lovers. There is a fizzing Isak extended mix as well as a more freewheeling and melodic Greece dub version then last of all is 'No Matter What You Do' (Sfact LP edit) which is all spoken word samples, electro-house drums and crunchy hits.

Alexny - "Not Bad" (5:36)
Review: The Moiss Music label seems to like to drop their EPs two at a time. They did it in February and they're doing it again in May. This eighth outing collects four more lively disco cuts, each with their own subtle influences. Berobreo's 'White Rabbit' for instance has funky undertones with loopy guitar riffs and nice breaks. The Magic Track's 'Jamming With Mom' meanwhile is more sensuous and deep, with late-night synth work and seductive vocals. Oldchap's 'I Want To Show You' has an expressive soul vocal with more low-slung grooves and Alexny's 'Not Bad' then gets quick, clipped and loopy for its lip-pouting disco thrills.

Review: On his contribution to Watergate's mix series, Biesmans has decided to showcase his own tracks, and mostly a dizzying array of previously unheard collaborations with some seriously talented producers. It makes sense then that the German imprint has decided to show off the best of these across two vinyl samplers, of which this is the second. It's a great collection all told, with opener 'Quantum Computing' - a bumping piano-house hook-up with one of his musical heroes, Mathew Jonson - and the effortlessly funky nu-disco workout 'Me Gusta Acid', co-produced by Kid Simius, standing out. Elsewhere, solo cut 'Hipster Paradise' and Johannes Albert collaboration 'Luft' are also well worth a listen.

Never Saw You Coming (DJ Spinna Galactic Soul vocal mix)
Never Saw You Coming (Franck Roger vocal mix)
Review: A debut on Seasons Limited for Black Coffee, the South African house don who was one of the early success stories of the Red Bull Music Academy. This one's gonna get attention thanks to the presence of a bumping remix from premier US producer DJ Spinna, but that's not to shift the focus from the original version of "Never Saw You Coming", which lays down a simmering soulful emotive house groove that's the perfect accompaniment to vocalist Tsepo's haunting refrain. Spinna's Galactic Soul Mix lifts the whole track towards the sky, flushing the rhythm with soaring synth patterns that wash excellently over the vocals and raw percussive thrust. Veteran Parisian DJ Frank Rodger hogs the B Side with a gloriously clopping refix that's driven by infectious panned synth work.

Blacksoul teams up with newcomer, Musical Globe, for a slice of disco heaven that is all about a wicked break. Review: The mysterious Blue Label bringing the re-edit disco funk heat once again with this smashing three-track bomb from Boscco & Terell. This is a real gem on the deep and smooth late night house tip, with the main cut "Sweet Sensations" conjuring up a heady disco funk vibe with a fat bassline and some nice sample. On the flip "Whenever" works a real memorable disco loop and is already getting some heavy Farina support, support, while "Stand Tell" jacks up the groove and EP tweaks the samples nicely. Lose Control (Denis & Jerry remix)
Review: The long awaited follow up to "Give Up The Funk" is finally here, and what better a label for it to be released on then Ian Carey's brand new imprint GFAB Records. Ian Carey's collaboration with Swiss duo The Good Guys has turned in one dancefloor scorcher. On the production tip Ian has wondered into yet another domain, this time into the dirty bass driven electro/house territory, while The Good Guys supply a well written and demanding vocal to sit right on top. Remix duties are taken over by the super hot duo Jerry Ropero and Denis the Menace. Jerry and Denis's mix takes the track into the funky latin piano led vibe perfect for the summer season and sure to be thrown down at every terrace on Ibiza. "Playing on the show" - Pete Tong, "I like it!" - Axwell, "Like the original mix" - Kid Crème, "Yep this is very cool" - Hardsoul, "Both mixes work for me although the main mix takes the prize" - ATFC, "Great electro with the right splash of funk. Will rock the crowd in my sets for sure" - Chris Lake, "Great track - funky but with nods towards the electronic scene" - James Wiltshire (Freemasons), "Feeling this - main mix for me" - Michael Gray, "Really feelin the Jerry Ropero mix.. Perfect for the upcoming summer gigs" - Kid Massive, "Original mix is Hot!" - Mark Brown (MYNC/CR2), "Will certainly be playing this. Strong groovy stuff, Ian with a twist!" - Olav Basoski, "This will rock in bigger rooms. Both mixes are very effective. Will play it out 4 sure" - Sergio Flores, "Big big fan of Ian Carey and Denis & Jerry.. what a package we have here" - Soul Avengerz, "The man is at it again with a deeper dirty sound and we can't get enough!" - Stonebridge, "'I like both mixes, especially Denis & Jerry's. ColorJaxx's 'I Know You' kicks off proceedings in upbeat mood, goaded along by a skippy garage beat, some beautiful piano work and arresting male vocals. 'Ain't Like That' by T.Markakis rolls slower and deeper, clouds of warm synth giving it a reassuring, dub feel, while Manuel Kane's 'Funk' boasts a cheery, end-of-evening sparkle with its hypnotic vocal samples and gentle sirens. Review: The legendary Little Louie Vega from Masters At Work revisits another disco classic and works his magic as always. This time around it is on the 1977 hit by American disco band John Davis and the Monster Orchestra titled "Up Jumped The Devil". Davis was a member of the MFSB studio session band during its heyday in the late 1960s and early to mid-1970s, appearing on many Philadelphia International recordings. On the A side we have got "Up Jumped The Devil" (Louie Vega remix) which compared to the original is much more uptempo and with a more direct dancefloor focus: it sounds like more of a an edit, until that brilliant string arrangement comes in: very MAW! Very soulful and funky. On the flip is a handy dub version too. Nurvous is a sub label of the more well known and seminal NYC imprint Nervous Records and founded in 2011.

Cranes In The Sky (Star One KDA Meltdown dub) (4:45)
Review: Baltimore-based DJ Oji has been in the house music game for a long time now, starting out with his own Poji label alongside DJ Pope around 1994 and steady trucking since then with his warm, approachable brand of deep house. Known for his collaborations with strong female vocalists, on this latest release for Foundation Music he teams up with Tracy Hamlin for 'Cranes In The Sky', a sentimental piece steeped in soulful composition. Pope steps up for a remix which strips the tune back without losing the message, while on the flip Joe Goddard brings his brand of bumpin', off-kilter floor-filling magic to bear, and then Star One drops the 'KDA Meltdown Dub' in a tougher, techier style which has plenty of fun dicing up Hamlin's vocal for a fresh and fruity version.

Craftsmanship - "Keep The Stabs" (5:46)
Review: Inhale Exhale bring six full new circular round-trip breaths to the fold, focusing on heartwarming and soulful summer deep house tunes. Intended mostly for outdoor disco BBQs, 'INEX 017' packs a fruitful punch. Opening proceedings on the A come 'Make It Right', 'Understand U' and 'Tears Of The M1', a power-of-three intro tracking a vibeful descension from crystalline waters, synth organs and high string samples down to the chillest of vinyl-crackly, primal mini tech moods. Then there's the unmissable mirror image on the B, podding 'Everytime', 'Clyde' and 'Keep The Stabs', the last of which is an especially delicious, refractive groove.

It features remixes from DJ Spen & also from Farfa who takes things in a slightly deeper direction while keeping that uplifting vibe held high in the sky.

LB Aka Labat - "Your Ass Gotta Go" (7:19)
Tochigi Canopy - "Gulf Ressac" (7:20)
Review: Moonrise Hill Material has an interesting mission statement. The French label says that it is dedicated to "poetic house music", a deliciously open-ended concept that's open to all sorts of interpretations. In the case of this EP - a multi-artist affair featuring label regulars and newcomers - that largely means chunky club tracks that doff a cap to classic disco and boogie. There are deviations from the blueprint, of course - see the dub-flecked tropical house slinkiness of Tochigi Canopy's "Gulf Ressac", or the Andres-ish loop jazziness of LB aka Labat's "Your Ass Gotta Go" - but it's likely most DJs will reach for the celebratory positivity of Etheyne and Folamour's party-starting A-side cuts.

DJ Swagger - "I Don't Need Your Love" (5:28)
Gutistinct - "The Girl You Love" (5:06)
Review: PNP's first collection of sample-heavy disco-house reworks, released earlier in 2017, sold out in record time. It's likely that volume two won't hang around long, either. Predictably, it's packed with party-starting jams, from the cheeky R&B vocals, bumpin' beats and disco guitars of Slamb's "Needs", to the slinky, filter heavy soul-goes-deep house sweetness of Gut Instinct's impressive closer, "The Girl You Love". In between, DJ Swagger combines snappy, ghetto house style drums and R&B vocals on "I Don't Need Your Love", Turk Turtleton beefs up an '80s soul/boogie gem and Fedde LNG offers up a smooth and floor-friendly take on a much-loved disco-era sing-along.

Underground Is My House (feat Tyrone Ellis - instrumental)
Review: Deeper than deep celebration of the underground. Very classic sound with wicked bass, gut wrenchingly soulful vocals, that more than aptly conveys the feeling. Well placed organ and some bursts of bass led energy that will leave you weak. Solid B-side instrumental shows off the strength of the track on it's own, even without those incredible vocals.

Christian Fischer - "Miracle Places"
Christian Fischer & The Ascent - "Nasty"
Review: Definition Records present Christian Fischer. He is probably one of the most open-minded techno artists around judging by his numerous releases which covers just about all aspects of techno music. "Miracle Places" is a solid stomper with electro influences and dreamy vocals. This would definitely not be misplaced in a DJ Hell set. The b-side is a collaboration between Fischer and newcomer The Ascent.
