Emotional Intelligence
Cat: NERO 047. Rel: 10 Dec 19
Deep House
  1. Chaos In The CBD - "Emotional Intelligence" (feat Nathan Haines & Dave Koor) (6:21)
  2. Chaos In The CBD & Lee Pearson Jnr Collectiv - "It's Up To Me" (feat K LaDawn & Joe Armon Jones) (5:08)
  3. Chaos In The CBD & Lee Pearson Jnr Collectiv - "It's Up To Me" (feat K LaDawn & Joe Armon Jones - instrumental) (6:07)
Review: On this rare outing on Neroli, Chaos In The CBD has been joined by a wealth of friends and like-minded musicians. They first join forces with saxophonist and fellow kiwi jazz legend Nathan Haines and talented South London keys player Dave Koor aka Modified Man on A-side "Emotional Intelligence", a deliciously deep, positive and melodious affair rich in jaunty Clavinet riffs, simmering strings, smile-inducing chords and groovy, bongo-laden drums. On side B they offer up vocal and instrumental versions of "It's Up To Me". K. LaDawn, Joe Armon-Jones and Lee Pearson Jnr Collective are the guests this time round, and their contributions - hazy, soulful vocals, mazy electric piano solos, jaunty jazz-house drums and so on - help make the track a sensual, slow-burn dancefloor delight. Almost all Chaos In The CBD EPs are worth checking, but this one is extra-special.

  1. Twelve Steps (6:15)
  2. Just Give It A Long Shot (4:06)
Review: Enjoying a brief sojourn away from then 2000 Black label he's long called home, sometime 4hero member Dego pops up on Neroli with a two-tracker that blends his usual jazz-funk inspired instrumentation with warm and fragrant, dancefloor-focused grooves. The jazz-funk influence is strongest on flipside "Just Give It A Long Shot", a more languid affair rich in squiggly synth lines, toasty bass guitar, slack-tuned drum breaks and the kind of group vocals that would have once sent rare groove heads into a spin. A-side "Twelve Steps" is arguably even better, with whispered vocals, jazzy synth lines and sunny guitars wrapping around a pleasingly rubbery Brit-funk groove.

Inside Part 1
  1. DJ Man X & Albert Sterling Menendez - "Consequences" (feat Blaze - Blaze vocal mix) (8:16)
  2. Lee Pearson Jr Collective - "Tell Me What It Is" (feat Terry Yancy - Abicah Soul remix) (7:04)
  3. Lee Van Kleef - "In The Wrong" (feat Lifford - Manoo dublove mix) (6:01)
Review: Esteemed selector Volcov's latest compilation series, Inside, focuses on tracks that have never appeared on vinyl before. The first EP in the series is wonderfully soulful and sultry, and contains a trio of grown-up dancefloor cuts. On the A-side you'll find Blaze's revision of DJ Man X and Albert Sterling Menendez's effortlessly soulful "Consequences", an impeccable fusion of Osunlade style broken house rhythms and rich, organic instrumentation. There's a similar feel to the Abicah Soul remix of Lee Pearson Jr Collective's brilliant "Tell Me What It is", while Manoo's fine rub of Lee Van Kleef's "In The Wrong" encases a steppy, Latin-tinged house groove in jazzy piano solos, spacey electronics and lilting synth-strings.

Love To The World
Cat: NERO 049. Rel: 01 Jul 20
Funky/Club House
  1. Love To The World (feat Josh Milan) (7:22)
  2. Don't Be Rude (6:19)
  3. Love To The World (instrumental mix) (7:22)
  4. Groove On (6:06)
Review: House music's ability to make you feel good is part of its appeal, and artists like New Jersey majesty Josh Milan of Blaze fame, and London broken beat astro Kaidi Tatham sure know that. They link here with Patrick Gibin for an EP that brims with summer time soul, joyous keys and funky bass riffs that are impossibly sweet. Jazz funk, house and boogie all colour the tracks here with "Don't Be Rude" brining the cosmic vibes and "Groove On" making you want to move for days with its killer b-line and disco energy. Gorgeous stuff, for sure.

Peace & Love EP
Cat: NERO 042. Rel: 25 Jun 18
Deep House
  1. She Don't Want To Be (6:03)
  2. In Spring (feat Sky) (7:52)
  3. Can't Get Enough (instrumental mix) (8:08)
Review: The analogue love continues... Hot in pursuit of "All The Little Things", Detroit OG Alton Miller delivers more fresh soul. And we mean soul; "She Don't Want To Be" is an exquisite dreamy percussive house cut that sits somewhere between Faze-O and MAW. "In Spring" maintains the woozy daydream feel while shuffling up the groove into more of a party-minded affair while "Can't Get Enough" is pure, uncut Detroit house funk. Beyond authentic.

Blake Hall Boogie EP
Cat: NERO 022T. Rel: 16 Nov 12
Deep House
  1. Blake Hall Boogie
  2. Epiphany
  3. From The Dirt
  4. This City Never Sleeps (Nite Life mix)
Review: A quick google search of "Blake Hall" results in links to an Essex community hall, a disused tube station and a Pokemon character from Bulbapedia. It's fun to imagine that somehow all three inspired Soul 223 aka Steve Pickton's latest Blake Hall Boogie missive on Italian imprint Neroil (a possible nod to Eno's 1993 hour long instrumental opus?). The title track seats modulating synths next to fluted bass tonks and metallics, replacing wonted Roland hi-hats. "Epiphany" is a quickened and shuffly groove with a fuzzy synth line as its centrepiece, whereas "From The Dirt" enters drowsy balearic territory via slower BPMs and off kilter sonics. The upbeat Nite Life mix to "The City Never Sleeps" caps off an EP perfect for the future boogie tip.

Some Sweet Ting
Cat: NERO 048. Rel: 29 Jan 20
Deep House
  1. Some Sweet Ting (6:13)
  2. Atmospheric Funk (7:03)
  3. Sounds Of The Rebel (9:25)
Review: Given that he learned from one of the true masters of deep house, Ron Trent, it's perhaps not that surprising that Trinidadian Deep's releases are always rich in dreamy pads, positive chord progressions, intricate musical touches and effortlessly soulful deep house grooves. His latest outing on Neroli is a terrific example of this, with title track "Some Sweet Ting" offering a tactile, life-affirming journey through starry synths, twinkling piano solos, jazzy bass, layered percussion and huggable chords. Flip to the B-side for the poignant, enveloping intergalactic deep house brilliance of "Atmospheric Funk" and "Sounds of the Rebel", whose darting synth-bass and glistening lead lines are as colourful as the accompanying pads are deep.

  2. Kirk Degiorgio - "Leave Everything Behind" (7:01)
  3. Patrice Scott - "Track 3" (5:18)
  4. Aybee - "River Of Evermore" (3:44)
  5. Ian O'Brien - "Music Comes From Within" (2:11)

  7. Dego - "31 Losses 31 Wins" (1:34)
  8. Fred P - "Star Crossed" (3:37)
  9. Linkwood - "Citrus" (6:03)
Review: To mark the 50th release on his now 20-year-old Neroli imprint, head honcho Volcov has asked friends and label artists to deliver "heart-warming melodies and atmospheric songs" that in some way draw inspiration from the Brian Eno piece after which the label was named. It's a neat idea and one that has resulted in a string of superb pieces, many of which sit somewhere between ambient, new age and the "Fourth World" work of Jon Hassell. Highlights include - but are no way limited to - the eyes-closed jazz guitar solos and deep space electronics of Gerald Mitchell, Volcov and Pirahnahead's "Snow", the sun-bright bliss of Patrice Scott's "Untitled", the fretless bass-sporting cinematic rush of Kirk Degiorgio's "Leave Everything Behind" and the ultra-deep liquid techno that is Fred P's "Star Crossed".

Deep House
  1. On My Heart (feat Paul Randolph - KZR Blazed vocal) (6:54)
  2. On My Heart (feat Paul Randolph - Delvyn Groove mix) (6:57)
  3. Speak Your Word (feat Osunlade & Rasiyah) (5:58)
  4. On My Heart (feat Paul Randolph - KZR Blazed instrumental) (6:57)
Review: Having recently devoted more time to re-edits and compilation work, the DJ/producer known as Volcov re-launches his jazzy and soulful Isoul8 project. The producer's first single under the pseudonym for five years is little less than superb. The EP opens with the KZR Blazed Dub, a wonderfully deep and soulful treat where Paul Randolph's evocative vocal comes smothered in elongated, deep space chords and undulating jazz-house drums. The Delvyn Groove version, rich in jammed-out Fender Rhodes riffs and rubbery live bass, sounds a little like vintage Georg Levin cuts on Sonar Kollektiv, while "Speak Your Word", featuring the combined talents of Osunlade and Rasiyah, brilliantly joins the dots between jazz-funk, deep house and 2000 Black style broken beat.
