  3. Visionary - "Hustlin" (feat Camp Souljah) (6:26)
  4. Truespirit - "Deep In The Jungle" (4:06)
Review: Reissue time! As New York jungle pillars Liondub International celebrate 10 years they've put together some of the hardest hitting bangers of their previous "Jungle To The World" collections on this powerful piece of wax. All the right vibes in all the right places, these all sound future fresh: DJ Hybrid's swashbuckling Dread bass backflips on "Special Request", the absolute bashy bless from Horace Andy and Marcus Visionary on "Sound Killer", the warmer reggae soul bubbles of Visionary's "Hustlin" and Truespirit's purring late 90s two-step homage "Deep In The Jungle". No filler in sight whatsoever.

VIVID 02 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VIVID 02. Rel: 24 Aug 20
  1. Etch - "She Sleeps She Slumbers" (5:01)
  2. Etch - "Carbonated" (4:35)
  3. Tom Jarmey - "Burn" (5:48)
  4. Tom Jarmey - "Spectrum" (5:32)
Review: Following a sure shot from Yosh earlier this year, Constant Sound offshoot Vivid returns with a deadly two tracker that plunges into the underworld of breakbeat science and soundsystem dynamics. Etch is without question one of the most inventive break-wielders in operation right now, and he pivots ably from monolithic drumfunk dubstep pressure to nimble jungle across his two astounding A side tracks. Tom Jarmey brings a more electro tinted angle to his offerings, sweeping from the atmospheric, melancholic roller "Burn" to the subtly snarling "Spectrum", offering something smoother in contrast to Etch's rugged cut ups.

  5. The Meditator - "Mash Down" (Msymiakos Ruckus mix) (5:50)
  6. The Meditator - "Mash Down" (Msymiakos Rollers mix) (6:39)
Review: Snappy snappy! J.Robinson's King K Rool series hits a big fat eight with this massive US/Norway free-for-all as young Nashville producer Ontology and rising Norwegian junglist Msymiakos get busy with a whole selection of originals and remixes. The twisted amens of "Serious Business" set the tone before we get progressively heavier as the EP rolls out. Highlights include the sultry soul of Ontology's remix of "Need It Bad", the dreamy-yet-slamming feels of "Take Your Socks Off First" and the straight-to-business ragga stamps of Msymiakos's remix of "Mash Down". In a while crocodile.

Present Decay EP
Cat: MODRU 001. Rel: 07 Jul 14
  1. Pawn - "Do U"
  2. The Renegades - "The Warmup"
  3. Vorres - "One Of These Old Days"
  4. Sideswipe - "Be With U"
Review: The London-based Modern Ruin Records label arrives with a mission statement to showcase some of the most talented and innovative artists making moves on the juke and footwork scenes around the world, and the label's first EP gets things off to an incredibly strong start. Pawn kicks off with "Do U", a dancefloor destroyer melding footwork textures with punishing D&B-influenced rhythms and bass, while The Renegades' "The Warmup" offers a jazzier number which places deft amen breaks throughout. On the flip, Sideswipe's "Be With U" offers a gospel-influenced, funky take on footwork with its vintage sample, but it's Vorres' "One Of These Old Days" that takes the crown, with delicate 808 rhythms fluttering across more soulful vocals. Essential stuff from a label to watch.

  1. Sam KDC & The Untouchables - "Alliance" (3:31)
  2. The Untouchables - "Suffa Ray Shun" (3:05)
Review: Fresh off releasing a fine second album through regular hub Auxiliary, Sam KDC switches down formats to 7" on this 45Seven collaboration with The Untouchables. They combine for A-side track "Alliance", a production where sense of space is key to the vibe and suggests Sam KDC is fully steeped in the dub science you expect from a 45Seven release. The Untouchables go solo and so low on flipside production "Suffa Ray Shun" which has a touch of the vintage Skull Disco about it.

  3. Fatigue (7:08)
  4. It Was Us Or Them (7:48)
Review: Thuggy's up to his ravey tricks again. A man just as capable of pushing you off a cliff with his deadly hardcore bangers as he is flipping ATB's "Till I Come" into a breakbeat monster, anything is possible when this man's in town. Just like this killer EP on Warehouse Rave. From the deep, emotional, almost Orbitalesque intro track "Concussion" we're then hit by bouncy rave bubbles on "Coordinated Love", aquatic bewilderment on "Fatigue" and the pensive flighty finale "It Was Us Or Them". Thug life, Thug love.

  4. Awkward Demise (6:34)
Review: Some folk are widow makers. Other folk are widow made. Bad to bone types who dish out breaks so brutal they should come with a medical health warning. Not that you'd pay much attention to it; beats like these are too good to miss out, regardless of health. Courtesy of Dead Man's Chest's Western Lore, it's four tracks of total rave annihilation; the bubble gun basslines of "Television", the icy unforgiveness of "The Kingdom", the prangy hardcore steps and swampy weirdness of "Deep Within There Is Nothing" and the dark finale "Awkward Demise". Some records are party starters. Other records are party made. Badness.

Can You Feel It
Can You Feel It (180 gram yellow vinyl 12")
Cat: VFS 007. Rel: 02 Sep 20
  1. Can You Feel It (5:58)
  2. On The Attack (4:16)
Review: Vinyl Fanatiks have willed two classic rave gems into 12" existence, after spending the best part of 28 years lurking on DAT. They come courtesy of Tone Def, a collective best known for their early work on the mighty Moving Shadow with tracks such as "Hectic House" and "T.D.E". Both these cuts, recorded around the same time, continue the classic rave theme with their swashbuckling breakbeats and zippy detuned synth sounds. Two sides for two very different vibes: "Can You Feel It" is the evangelistic hands-in-the-air rush-fuelled romp while "On The Attack" is a much sharper hardcore piece with its aggy, pitched-up lyrics.

Review: Fire in the hole! Following his Metalheadz EP earlier this year, Newcastle's Tyrone steps over to good mates Ulterior Motive at Guidance for a full four-track slab of D&B excellence. The title track is an absolute beast that slices through the air and space with incredible weight and width while elsewhere "Beg Of U" takes us on a tour of Tyrone's deeper space-aged side, "Lost Witness" rolls out with rattling menace and muscle and "Velvet" closes the deal on a deep introspective one with the label heads. Prepare to be severed.

Review: It's been a fair old while since Dennis "Dego" McFarlane last donned the Tek9 alias, a solo pseudonym he first used in 1991 on the bass-heavy, Bleep and hardcore influenced weightiness of "Kingdom Of Dub". This album - his first under the name since 1999's jazzy and downtempo "Simply" - is not entirely new, but all of the music is previously unreleased. The tracks were produced at various points between 1995 and 2019 and mostly offer warm, melodious, funk-fuelled takes on jungle and drum and bass rich in bustling basslines, snare-heavy beats, jazz-funk chords (something that has long been a feature of McFarlane's work) and picturesque melodies. There are some heavier, rougher and more ragga-influenced cuts present, but the prevailing vibe is warm and positive.

Review: Following Lavery's crucial 019 comes this beautiful V/A from a range of exciting established names and fresh heads. Focussing on the deeper side of J Robinson's label, Theory takes the lead wirth a Goodlooking style deamy stepper, Robinson himself links with the one and only Ink for a stunning and sultry R&B flavoured breakbeat gem while on the flip Repertoire's Law & Kola Nut continue the soul vibes on "Your Love Is So True" before Wetman dries us of with pure science as "Golden Teacher" signs us out with rattling drums and deep breath vocals that totally live up to the Meditator name. Perfect summer sounds.
