The Afrosound - "Fiebre En La Jungla" (3:13)
Wganda Kenya - "Tipit Heyd" (3:39)
Review: Two previously rare Julio Ernesto 'Fruko' Estrada productions on one super-juicy 45! First up are The Afrosound with a cover of The Chakachas' instantly recognisable "Fiebre En La Jungla". Throwing an array of steamy, sensuous vocal textures, it will cause some serious heat on any floor whose dancers knows the original. We remain in Columbia on the B as one of Wganda Kenya's rarest Disco Fuentes 45s gets a revisit. Heavily percussive cumbia laced with rich organ-primed funk, things get really hypnotic when the groove strips back to the insistent rhythm devices.

Review: Ghanaian/UK outfit Isaac Birituro & The Rail Abandon won plenty of fans with the first two albums Kalba and Small Small now return with this seven track opus. It explores the traditional West African roots of their sound but also adds some freshness in the form of Birituro's xylophone as well as Sonny Johns' folky touches and the powerful vocals of Ghanaian songstress Wiyaala. You might well have already heard some of this on 6Music and will likely hear much more because it is hugely appealing and accessible music with devastating soul.

Review: Universal Cave Records 003 pairs another record digging and DJ duo, Philadelphia's D. Lord and Werner Williams. D. Lord's 'Start the World' is stampeding euro funk with chainsawing clav and an unrelenting bass groove. Maximum funk effect achieved with vital precision. Werner Williams' 'You've Got Style' exudes cool. It's one part psychedelic synth groove and one part cockeyed classic rock, soaring harmonies & juju for days - a long lost cousin to Fox's 'The Juggler.'

Wild Cherry - "Play That Funky Music" (Bully Boy refix) (4:09)
Review: Act of Sedition specializes in the most rarely seen of formats, the double seven-inch single. This is the label's third such release in a row and, like its predecessors, features fresh re-edits and re-fixes of classic funk jams. Dutch crew RocknRolla Soundsystem step up first, serving up a rolling, bass-heavy spruce-up of Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools" that's a little more 4-4 in feel than the Queen of Soul's original. SanFran Disko brilliantly rearranges the same artist's sweet 1983 boogie jam "Get It Right" - emphasizing the slap-bass, synths and bustling beats - before Frank Agrario gets to work on Marty Moore's punchy, disco era funk workout "Radiation Funk" with excellent results. Finally, Bully Boy provides a killer peak-time version of Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music".

Freedom - "Get Up & Dance" (DNA edit) (4:03)
SWV & Wu Tang Clan - "Anything" (DNA edit) (4:31)
Review: The Originals crew has decided to end 2020 in the same way as it began the year, by delivering fresh "DNA Edits" of two classic, in-demand floor-fillers. On side A they presented a tightened up, chopped-down, "45"-friendly revision of Freedom's 'Get Up & Dance', a 1979 disco-funk number that has been sampled countless times by hip-hop producers. The edit makes much of the party-hearty feel of the original version, flitting between the lolloping, horn-laden breaks (the portion most often heard in rap records), and the lesser-celebrated vocal parts. Over on the flip they provide a dope re-edit of one of the many tracks that samples 'Get Up & Dance': SWV's 1994 R&B classic 'Anything', featuring rap verses from none other than the Wu-Tang Clan.

Review: Destination Ethiopia: The Wallias Band are one of the country's longest standing troupes with over 20 years service to their name from the early 70s to early 90s and serious accomplishments such as being the first Ethiopian band to tour the USA. Here they're represented in all their full spread glory; "Muziqa Muziqa" has an almost northern soul dynamic with its speed and wily sax blasts from Seyoum while "Muziqawi Silt" is a much more measured, introspective affair. Beautiful.

Review: Banoffee Pies Records launches its first white label to date, and it's a three-pronged collaboration by new and exciting faces in the scene. First up is Philou Louzolo and his excellent "Afrofuturism Dance", a solid house jerker with lively tribal influences, folloed siftly by Wendel Sield and his moodier, jazzier piece entitled "History Of Black People". Low Band - "Willow Man" (Beatfanatic extended rework)
Wonder What - "Blackman" (Beatfanatic rework)
Review: Ace Finnish edits label Kojak Super Sounds were always in the unenviable position of trying to match the impact of their previous release - the all conquering housed up Alexander O Neal tweak from South Coast duo Maxxi Soundsystem. Thus it was a wise choice to give the reins to a trusted head in fellow Scandinavian Beatfanatic whose rep has been concrete since the rise of GAMM. Typically for the Swedish producer, it's a decidedly funk heavy disco affair as the A Side rolls out a glistening extension of the Low Band's delightful "Willow Man" which should seep into people's consciousness just in time for the summer season on the Croatian coastline. The percussion heavy workout towards the end is the money moment! On the flip, Beatfanatic adds some analogue boogie heat to your man Wonder's "Blackman" which will appease those discotheque attendees who just love to request the singer.

Their classy Tempistica Mistica EP offers up a pair of richly percussive and Afro-Latin tinged house cuts that are primed and ready for deployment on the most cultured dance floors. One Way - "Don't Fight The Feeling" (4:23)
Windjammer - "I Thought It Was You" (4:42)
Review: The classic 1982 funk anthem 'Don't Fight The Feeling' by American r&b and funk band One Way gets a fine 12" pressing here, which means it can be played nice and loud. Singer Al Hudson leads the way with his buttery vocal, while a stepping and broken rhythm with lovely dry claps and w sloppy synth squeal make for a pretty unique sound given when this was first recorded. On the flip side, Windjammer's 'I Thought It Was You' offers a more mellow, melodic contrast full of the band's signature blend of r&b and jazz with cooing, heart-melting vocals and a nice stepping rhythm that lovers of UK street soul will surely be drawn to.

Wal Sant'ana - "O Viajante" (3:09)
Review: It was the iconic Copacabana Records that put out this classic MPB back in 1964. That makes 'Um Balanco pra voce' by Os Rouxinois one of the oldest releases in Mr Bongo's Brazil45 series and it is also one of the best. Arnaud Rodrigues wrote the tune which is a superb mix of exotic funk, bossa nova rhythms and quirky melodies from a five-track 7" of tunes that the band originally used to play on TV. On the other side, 'O Viajante' is the sort of irresistibly sunny sound that quickly wins your heart and is sure to light up any dancefloor.

Review: BlackCash & Theo are back in this great series of funk, soul and party edits. Pleasure's "Bouncy Lady" was produced by jazz legend Wayne Henderson of The Crusaders. The intro break has been extended, and is said to be one of the all time classic hip hop funk breaks. Elements of this track were sampled on "Brand New Funk" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, "Word to the Mother (Land)" by Big Daddy Kane, and "Church" by De La Soul. On the flip, Whatnauts' "Why Can't People Be Colors Too" is an R&B jam with another heavy break, as sampled by Q-Tip, Pete Rock, Diamond D, Dilla, and "Oh My God" by A Tribe Called Quest featuring Busta Rhymes.

Jose Prates - "Nana Imboro" (4:28)
Wroblewski Jazz Quintet - "Nana Imboro" (3:15)
Review: The 62nd single in Mr Bongo's long-running Brazil 45s series is notable for containing Jose Prates' "Nana Imboro", a deep, hypnotic and intoxicating samba cut that was initially recorded and released way back in 1958. Relatively slow and steady by samba standards, its chanted refrain is thought to be the inspiration for Jorge Ben's much better known "Mas Que Nada". Wisely, Mr Bongo has backed Prates' sublime original with a 1960 cover by obscure Polish outfit Wroblewski Jazz Quintet. This dispenses with the chanting, instead increasing the number of intertwined horn parts. Given that original copies of the rare Polish EP it first appeared on will set you back serious money, it's great to see this fine cover included here.

Unknown Tape - "Familiar Time & Place" (Detroit mix) (7:09)
Review: The shadowy Edit & Dub crew don't talk about their releases, so it can be difficult to ascertain whether the tracks they're showcasing are long-lost originals, or new edits of ridiculously rare records. Either way, the label's latest EP features versions of some seriously hard to find treats, starting with a fine 'extended disco instrumental' of Sanctuary's 'Disconnect', a fine disco-boogie jam from 1980. They then deliver a (we think) previously unreleased 'extended disco' mix of Willie J & Co's killer 1976 disco-funk gem 'Boogie With Your Baby'. On the B-side we're treated to two takes on the mysterious 'Familiar Time and Place' by Uknown Tapes: a 'Chicago Mix' which sounds like late 80s Windy City acid house smothered in spacey deep house chords and intergalactic electronics and the mid-80s techno-tinged 'Detroit Mix'.

Review: Sometimes, incredibly rare and expensive records don't live up to the hype. We can safely say that Gloria Ann Taylor's "Deep Inside You"- a superb, disco-era chunk of sexually charged soul - is not one of those records. Very few original copies were pressed, which not only explains the eye-watering second-hand prices but also the numerous bootlegs that have appeared over the years. This, then, is the record's first licensed reissue. It's worth picking up, not only for the sublime title track, but also for bonus cuts "What's Your World" - a laidback, super-sweet chunk of laidback West Coast soul - and the lushly orchestrated "Love Is A Hurting Thing".

Both tracks on The Martians Visit are certified discotheque killers with B Side cut "Sail On" the acknowledge biggie, a highly sought-after jazzy soul classic melding super-cool low-slung grinding Island funk with understated steel pans and a dreamy female chorus. He was known much more for his live performances with bands such as The Monks Experience then, later, Rapture Voices who he recorded these two records in the mid-70s. Review: Back in the autumn, Wack Wack Rhythm Band launched the WWRB label, in the process dropping their first single in six years. This speedy follow-up is similarly impressive. For us, it's all-about A-side "Madras Express", a speeding, funk-fuelled journey through meandering saxophone solos, punchy horn breaks, fast-fingered electric bass, spacey Moog motifs and all manner of layered additional percussion. That said, there's also much to admire about Hammond funk workout "Stay Pressed", where jammed out solos and lead lines come accompanied by sharp guitar riffs, Mod-era lead guitar solos and the kind of stomping beat that would excite even the most miserable of Northern Soul enthusiasts. It also contains an absolutely killer drum solo, which is something we at least can't get enough of.

Sampled by Madlib on the Madvillain album track 'Curls', this lounge classic from Calmon's 1970 Waldir Calmon E Seus Multisons LP on Copacabana exudes nostalgic charm. Review: Released in celebration of Expansion's recent re-serving of two of Leon's early 80s albums - Rockin' You Eternally and Leon Ware - here's a delightful 45 that reminds us of his finest solo moments. "Why I Came To California" is a sun-kissed soul boogie groove with big horns and even bigger chorus. "Rockin' You Eternally" (which is, let's face it, one of the smoothest song titles to ever come from the 80s) showcases Leon's softer side. A ballad steeped in sentiment, play this loud enough and everyone in a five mile radius will stop and get smoochy.

Here he does just that with his remix of Hannah Warm's 'Just In Time.' Their latest pick is, we're reliably informed, one of the "holy grails" of Guaguanco music - an astonishingly hard-to-find "45" from Nicaraguan band Warumo, whose members had previously played in some of the country's most popular salsa bands. 'Bravo Guaguanco' dates from 1977 and is simply insatiable - a heavy, up-tempo workout in which salsa style vocals and instrumentation (think twinkling piano riffs, heavy horns and fast-fingered bass) rise above a killer Guaguanco rhythm laden with heady Latin percussion. Original B-side 'Pa'l Que Lo Quiera Gozar' is equally as good, with a more laidback, breezy and psychedelic-tinged sound.

John Arnold takes the groove from "Discolexia" and turns it into a deep up-tempo groove that catches you from the get-go. Add some Brazilian percussion and sirens and you have a club gem that fits perfectly into house and broken beat sets.

Super Star (2:54)
Super Star (part 2) (3:50)
Review: Miles Away Records are proud to introduce their latest single to land on the label: the cosmic soul gem 'Super Star' by Ruth Waters and the State Of Mind Show Band. Ruth 'Silky' Waters was best known for her two disco-infused albums Never Gonna Be The Same and Out In The Open, produced by the late, great John Davis. 'Super Star', however, was released on the tiny independent KMBA Recordings label in the late 1970s, and draws on the twin wells of modern soul and gospel, lending both a touch of cosmic goodness. On the flip, there's 'Super Star Pt.2', which plunges deeper into the cosmic essence of the track by way of both extended guitar and synth solos; both tracks are stupendios in their own rights, making this a hotly versatile release for a far-and-wide DJ demographic.

I Do, I Did, I'm Done (4:14)
Review: Natasha Watts dropped her Music Is My Life album this year and this tidy 7" features one of the gloriously feel good tunes from it. 'I Do I Did I'm Done' has her soulful vocals coming over pure and tender over a lush instrumental with gorgeous chords and a warm summer day feel. 'Brother Days' is a track from back in 2018 that has been remastered and reworked. It's a more up beat breaks tune that brings the miles and will have you swirling round the dancefloor with a drink in hand.

Review: Chicago outfit Wavelength tap into the funk traditions of bands like Parliament here with a seductive and rather sleazy new EP for Soulistic 360. The whole thing has been arranged by Windy City soul innovator Rahaan and comes on white marbled vinyl 12". Opener 'Can You Handle This Funk' is slow, steamy, sensuous with its languid kicks, live, raw drums and drawled vocals all luring you into the groove. The remix is a subtle teak of the original and on the flip is 'Kemetic Dance Party' which brings more Afro style drums and some bold sax lines to get things going in a more energetic way.

Countdown (7:05)
Review: Certainly, in terms of the current state of the environment, the title of this Oscar Weathers gem couldn't be more true. While that is a sobering sentiment, the tune he serves up is far from it - dazzling disco synths, big horn leads and noodling fun bass keeps you moving nonstop from the first beat to the last drop. On the flip is the slightly lower slung "Countdown", this time with meandering lead synths that bring a retro-futuristic soul to his deep cut rhythm section. Well done Fantasy Love on another choice reissue of this essential slice of soul.

Review: In 2016, Family Groove Records released a 12" of previously unheard 1979 demo recordings by Webster Station, a boogie-funk band from Dayton, Ohio whose studio efforts were initially binned by Warner Brothers for not being commercial enough. Demand for Family Groove's limited 12" of their recordings has remained high, so the label has decided to do a reissue. There's much to admire throughout, from the high-octane thrills of opener "Are You For Real" and the spacey warmth of the super-soulful "Can You Feel My Love", to the sugary sweetness of the Latin tinged ballad "Lady" and righteous closer "If You Feel Like Dancing", a killer combination of spacey synths, crunchy drums, urgent vocals and killer Clavinet lines.

Review: UK based production team Weekend Sun is made up of Phil Smith and Chris Tarn. Here their loose and inviting 'Hoochie Coo Strut' tune gets presented on a limited edition 12" with a pair of killer mixes. The original is all deep cut, slow motion disco grooves, spangly guitar riffs and big horns. It is a cacophony of sound that gets dialled right back by Al Kent. His take is a low slung groover with jazzy chords given plenty fo room to breath and neat little riffs filing in the spaces beyond. Andy Smith Reach Up Disco Wonderland remix is a big one for full floors.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has very light surface marks/smudges, but otherwise in perfect working order***

According to the South American music specialists at Matasuna Records, Ralph Weeks' 1971 single "Let Me Do My Thing" - recorded alongside backing Los Dinamicos Exciters - is arguably the most sought-after Panamanian soul record around. As this reissue proves, Weeks' original version is rubbery, heavy and rousing, with the singer's rasping lead vocal soaring above a weighty backing track that sounds like a breezier take on the New York boogaloo sound. On the flip, Voodoocuts tools it up for modern dancefloors, underpinning his club-ready edit with punchy new drums that give the cut more of a breakbeat style swing.

Something Deep Inside (3:21)
Review: 50 years ago Panamanian vocalist Ralph Weeks released his most celebrated record, a seductive soul song called "Something Deep Inside". Here he resurfaces on Names You Can Trust, backed by label-mates Combo Lulo, with two new versions of that sweet and seductive song. A-side "Algo Muy Profundo" is a Spanish language version of the song, with Combo Lulo providing a superb hybrid reggae-soul backing track onto which Weeks delivers a superb lead vocal. While brilliant, we'd argue that the flipside English language re-recording is even better, with Weeks' silky smooth and emotionally rich vocal being a perfect match for the band's pie-eyed, slow motion rhythm.

Review: The West Loop Chicago collective reportedly span continents, pooling soul-soaked talents into some truly powerful dance music. "Knocking On The Door Of The Cosmos" doffs its cap to Sun Ra with some crafty samples, but the musical vibe is more in line with the likes of Andres, Dego or other such masters of irrepressibly funky house music. "Theme For Chicago" takes an iconic Roy Ayers jam and gets wild with the filter, "Son Of Equinox" trips down a loose and limber jazz funk pathway and "Payback" whips up some tightly clipped samples into a pumped up peak time belter. From start to finish this EP oozes class and authenticity - a serious grip for any self-respecting Midwest heads.

LA Walk (Nik Weston extended re-edit) (6:10)
Review: It would be fair to say that Estiban Lindsay's one and only album, 1980's L.A Walk, is something of a sought-after rarity. Considered by many disco/boogie diggers to be a must-have, original copies of the Canadian classic currently change hands for three-figure sums online. Ever the dusty-fingered digger, Nik Weston has managed to license two tracks from the album after hearing global trotting DJ Hunee championing the main track in his sets in 2015 , and provides his own extended dancefloor re-edits. Both are subtly done, with Weston teasing out Lindsay's grooves and making more of his deliciously soulful versions, all without adding needless house drums or contemporary production tricks. The EP also contains the original version of the warm, disco-boogie gem "Come To Me". As played by Craig Charles (BBC 6 Music), Hunee, Eddie C, Tom Noble, Admin, Mike Shaw, Volcov, Frank Booker, Red Greg, Ashley Beedle, Joey Negro, Dom Servini, Miles Eastwick, Faze Action and many more...

Review: Gems? Diamonds, more like. Sparkling funky diamonds that shine from every guitar, horn, bass and deep belly-driven chants. First up is a 1976 number from Wganda Kenya who actually come from Colombia. You'd never tell; with vast harmonies and a sonic span that's as wide as the Serengeti plains, its heart beats to a strict Kenyan rhythm. M'Bamina add a French African touch to the B on a specially edited version of "Atide O Sika" by label boss Nik Weston under his MUKAT edit guise. Watch out for the deconstructed percussion and bass break. A finer example of an edit you will not find. The Juno edition of the single comes in exclusive packaging of kraft paper hand stamped inner sleeve, additional branded card sleeve, signed insert, sticker and plastic protective outer sleeve

Review: JD Twitch and Midland's Autonomous Africa project supersizes to dancefloor-ready 12"s and they do so with this really interesting Columbian Afrofunk release. You'll instantly recognise the A; a powerful rendition of Fela Kuti's "Shakalode", there's more than a smidgeon of Latin fire in those rampant, lolloping grooves. Meanwhile on the B, the label explores two of Wganda's lesser known originals; the tub-thumping, chant-heavy, organ-squeezing "Pim Pom" and the dusty percussive, blues harp-led folk number "La Botellita". With all proceeds going to Action In Africa, this wins in every possible direction.
