Autoportretas (5:05)
Review: The state51 Conspiracy label comes very much correct early on in the New Year with this two-track grey marbled vinyl 12" in a fancy spot-varnished sleeve. It takes the form of two fresh Santaka reworks of original compositions by Rytis Mazulis and avant-garde choir Melos Collective which were first released back in 2020. Santaka, which means "confluence" in Lithuanian, is the coming together of DJ and producer Manfredas and drummer and producer Marijus Aleksa and here they layer up disembodied vocals and dark jazz melodies on 'Ramybe' and then 'Autoportretas' is a textural ambient exploration packed with fascinating sound designs.

Review: This record comes at a sad time, as Marlena Shaw passed away in January 2024, the New York born soul singer with her unmistakable voice leaving a long list of amazing credits and performances when she departed. This magnificent double 7" focuses on her early years in the late 1960s, work she did on the highly influential Cadet label just before she moved to Blue Note. 'California Soul', 'Liberation Conversation', 'Let's Wade In The Water' and 'Woman Of The Ghetto' are all soul classics by the late songbird, and all gathered togethere here into one unmissable EP.

Review: This 7" is a reissue of one that first dropped back in July and soon sold out but with two extra cuts. It offered a rare chance to discover hidden gems from the Austrian Public Broadcasting Institution (ORF) vaults which were all vinyl debuts in summer. This gatefold double 7" kicks off with Stefanie & ORF Big Band's 'Compared to What,' a hard-hitting funk track featuring lo-fi vibes and powerful horns. The A-2 offers a subtly tweaked version, maintaining the same high energy. 'Feelin' It' then comes on the flipside with big brass leads, deep-cut drums and a stirring, emotive female vocal lead. A second alternative is also featured.

Feelin' It (2:28)
Feelin' It (alternative version) (2:20)
Review: Record Shack unearth two tunes from the vaults of Austrian public broadcasting institution ORF, available for the very first time on officially released 7" record. Pressed using only the strictest high-grade equipment, the flame of soul soprano Stefanie Vhynak's 'Feelin' It' is rekindled with a rejuvenative flair: the Viennese singer cut her teeth in the USA before her return to her birthplace, where she was discovered and subsequently enjoyed a longstanding career. Though her stint with the Austrian Broadcasting Company was short-lived, it could still be argued that Stefanie's rep of contributions to the broadcaster lie among her best. The exigency of radio is paramount to good songcraft, which is why there are two versions of 'Feelin' It' here; the first of which lays down the centrality of the song's lyrics via pared-backbeat and muted funk, and the latter pulling the pull ring on the sonic grenade, allowing a full-throttle vocal and instrumental amour to explode.

All four sides fo this double 7" are airy and jazzy, full of spring time vibes and gently persuasive grooves. As I Walk On By (Improvised Jam edit) (6:38)
Review: A veritable wave-making machine in the infinity pool of British nu-jazz, producer Tom Funk rocks up with another 12" instalment in his The Sultan's Swing Project, linking with Colin Curtis Presents for a five-track EP to complement the three LPs reeled off the top so far. The usual grift of jazz, jazz-funk and acid jazz instrumentation - plus trip-hop, downtempo, dub, Balearica, and Latinesque beats - are heard in full swing here, with an extra linseed oiling for the dancefloor. Rapid club-bound bossa nova sets the scene on 'Thinking Of You', while 'Copenhagen Connection' suggests a potential sonic espionage link between London and Denmark, as a moment of Baltic dark jazz marks the only point of downtime on the record. A closing 'As I Walk On By', replete with guest singer, redrapes the Dionne Warwick hookline in looser jazz culottes.

Review: Those who keep a keen eye on the contemporary British nu-jazz scene should already have encountered producer Tom Funk's The Sultan's Swing project. He's already released a trio of fine albums under the alias, each of which combines authentic jazz, jazz-funk and acid jazz instrumentation (provided courtesy of a rotating cast of guest musicians) with nods to trip-hop, downtempo, dub, Balearica and Latin beats. The Sultan's Swing Sessions, Funk's contribution to the Colin Curtis Presents series, takes a similar approach, with predictably excellent results. Our picks of a very strong bunch are the gently spaced-out dancefloor Latin jazz of 'Lotta Arlotto', the summery jazz-fusion of 'Hitchfunkers Slide To The Galaxy' and impeccable opener 'The New Beginning'.

Review: Sunaga T Experience is a solo project of the world-renowned famous Japanese DJ and producer Tatsuo Sunaga. He has dropped a wide array of sounds in single and album form including a great cover of Joni Mitchell's Blue album. His latest 7" marks the 100th release on Disc Minor and is named in honour of that. 'STE 100' is a lush, tender dinner jazz sound with muted horns and warm reeds over a meandering bassline. 'The Way Of The Dragon' is as lively a tune as you might expect given it is named after a martial arts movie. It has busy drums and jagged horn leads with plenty of percussive energy all carrying you away.

Review: Following up 2021's acclaimed Vulture Prince, Pakistini American singer Arooj Aftab collaborates with jazz pianist Vijay Iyer and Shahzad Ismaily on synths to present a striking exercise in dramatic, atmospheric composition. Aftab's voice remains the centre of a creative groupthink which began in 2018, and here the musical ornamentation is turned down to a simmer, eschewing percussion in favour of ambient pastures. There's also space for Iyer and Ismaily to stretch out on their own, but ultimately this is Aftab's vehicle and her voice goes from strength to strength on this standout record.

Review: There have been plenty of retrospectives on the absolutely essential work of Sun Ra and his Arkestra over the years, but trust Strut to go that bit deeper when they elected to focus on the Sun God himself. As the extensive title suggests, this collection places the focus on proceedings in the hands of Marshall Allen, the longest serving member of the Arkestra and current band leader. The results mean In The Orbit Of Ra feels a whole lot more personal and indepth, with over 25 years worth of Sun Ra-lead music documented. It's all been fully remastered from the original tapes and is pretty much the most conclusive introduction to the work of this pioneer one could hope for. In addition to the 13 track double vinyl set, this release also includes the double CD edition which includes a further 7 Ra gems!

Review: The Doober, the latest instalment in the Music for Saxofone and Bass Guitar series by jazz duo Sam Gendel and Sam Wilkes, is a freewheeling listen through covers of songs by artists like Joni Mitchell, Judee Sill, and Sheryl Crow. Recorded live, the album captures the raw energy and spontaneity of their performances that feature Gendel's dynamic saxophone work and Wilkes' bouncing basslines. The duo's approach to covers is far from conventional, as they prioritise spacious textural exploration over faithful renditions. Tracks like 'Rugged Road' and 'The Circle Game' undergo radical transformations, evolving into wriggling, cartoonish masses and modal studies, respectively. Gendel and Wilkes playfully deconstruct each song, infusing them with their own cheeky sense of abandon. Despite their unconventional approach, the duo's chemistry shines through on every track, with each piece serving as a framed photo of outer space, presenting the infinite within a digestible container. The album's highlights include unexpected interpolations, such as a jazz rendition of Sheryl Crow's 'Tomorrow Never Dies' and a seamless transition from Miklos Rozsa's 'Love Theme (From Ben Hur)' into Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game.'

Review: Ryuichi Sakamoto is making a very welcome return here with his first solo album since 2017's async. Milan Records are releasing 12 in January to coincide with the venerated Japanese composer's 71st birthday, and the timing is poignant given the album draws from musical sketches created while Sakamoto battled for two and a half years with cancer. Sakamoto himself describes reaching for his synths as a kind of therapeutic response to a big operation, and so the music carries an added depth of personal experience from one of the most profound ordeals a person can go through.

Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing of any serious jazz enthusiast: a recently rediscovered recording of a live performance made by the Pharoah Sanders Quartet at the Grand Auditorium at Studio 104, Paris, in 1975. The tenor saxophonist is undoubtedly the star of the show throughout, though the fluidity of the double bass playing, the loose-limbed drumming and the rush-inducing breeziness of the piano parts - especially on "Love Is Here" parts one and two, which reminded us of another Sanders classic "You've Got To Have Freedom" - are all equally as ear-catching. Musically, it's as inspired as you'd expect, nestling somewhere between the great maestro's greatest "astral jazz" recordings and more traditional forms of jazz.

Review: Although "Africa" is not one of the harder Pharoah Sanders albums to find on vinyl, jazz heads have long complained about the sound quality of the original single-vinyl edition of the 1987 album. It's for this reason that this Tidal Waves Music reissue, which stretches the set across two slabs of wax and adds two previously CD-only tracks ("Heart To Heart" and "Duo"), will simply fly off the shelves. That and the fact that it remains a superb album: a bright, breezy, contemporary jazz masterpiece that sees the legendary saxophonist accompanied by drummer Idris Muhammad, pianist John Hicks and bassist Curtis Lundy. Highlights include the arguably definitive version of Sanders' classic "You've Got To Have Freedom" and a superb update of John Coltrane standard "Naima".

Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord
Review: Pharoah Sanders' 1970 album is an intense spiritual jazz offering, recorded in New York's A & R Studios. The title, which translates from Arabic as "Deaf Dumb Blind," is a reference to the Sura Bakara from the Qur'an, suggesting a deep, metaphysical exploration of faith and enlightenment. The album blends African musical influences with Sanders' signature improvisational style, offering a bold statement of musical and philosophical depth. The performance is raw and hypnotic, characterised by Sanders' powerful saxophone work, with the music pushing boundaries of both jazz and spiritual exploration.

Review: Elemental Music's latest release brings a long-awaited reissue of Pharoah Sanders' 1973 album Village of the Pharoahs, finally available on vinyl after decades. This record stands as one of Sanders' most groundbreaking works, blending spiritual jazz with free improvisation. The album is a masterclass in musical exploration, featuring a stellar lineup including Joe Bonner, Cecil McBee, and Stanley Clarke. Side-1 launches with the pulsating title track, a three-part suite that immerses listeners in complex rhythms and modal saxophone lines. Side-2 continues with the ethereal 'Mansion Worlds,' before shifting into the balladic 'Memories of Lee Morgan,' and concluding with the lively 'Went Like It Came,' a surprising, foot-tapping closer. Considered one of his best releases by the majority, this listen is ideal for both seasoned jazz lovers and those new to the genre.

Review: Pharoah Sanders recorded Thembi in the winter of 1970-71, amid sessions with Alice Coltrane that would culminate in her seminal Journey In Satchidananda album. The same profound spirituality that imbued Coltrane's masterpiece with an aura of serene majesty also permeates Thembi. One of the standout tracks, 'Astral Traveling,' originated from a serendipitous encounter with a Fender Rhodes electric piano. Upon arriving at the California studio, while his bandmates set up their instruments, Sanders noticed the piano and, driven by curiosity, began experimenting with its sounds. This track, with its ethereal quality and innovative use of the electric piano, captures the exploratory spirit and transcendent quality that define Thembi, making it a cornerstone of Sanders' discography and the blueprint to the serendipitous magic of musical experimentation. Thembi offers something very unique for the time in jazz music.

Review: Pharoah Sanders' Wisdom Through Music stands as a testament to his exploratory spirit in the jazz world, recorded in 1972 and released a year later by Impulse! Featuring a stellar ensemble including flutist James Branch, pianist Joe Bonner, and bassist Cecil McBee, the album brings together some of the most innovative players of the time. The production by Lee Young, brother of the legendary Lester Young, frames Sanders' vision with a spiritual and deeply rhythmic soundscape. The track 'High Life' captures the essence of West African musical tradition, combining ecstatic drumming with vibrant flute work, creating an atmosphere of joyous celebration. 'Love Is Everywhere', a staple of Sanders' live performances, radiates raw emotion and soul, with Sanders leading the charge before allowing Bonner and the rest of the ensemble to take the song to new heights. The album is a powerful snapshot of Sanders' 70s output, showcasing his ability to blend spiritual jazz with global influences, making it a vital piece of his extensive discography.

It lends the music an extra air of potency, not that it really needed it. This one is an album that is noted for being the one that reunited Sanders with vocalist Leon Thomas, who in years previous appeared on some of Sanders' most endearing tunes. Many tunes here are defined by the use of Henderson's synthesizer but for opener 'Shukuru' and closing funereal piece 'For Big George'. Both are some of the album's highlights.

Review: It would be fair to say that the latest edition in BBE's 'J-Jazz Masterclass' series of reissues is exceedingly rare. In fact, when it first appeared on Smile Records in 1976, only 100 copies of Hideto Saski-Toshiyuki Sekine Quartet's "Stop Over" were ever produced. The album's rarity is impressive, but it's the quality of the all-acoustic set of hard-bop workouts that makes it an essential purchase. As you might expect, there's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the high-octane rush of opener "Carole's Garden", where dizzying piano solos catch the ear, to the similarly hectic and arguably even more rush-inducing "Stop Over" (a ten minute cut of epic proportions), via the sweet, sparse and contemplative "Soultrane".

Review: Japanese-British avant-jazz greatness notably graced the singular hall of London's Cafe OTO in September 2019; drummer Takeo Moriyama and pianist Masahiko Satoh performed for the first time at the esteemed experimental music venue as part of Peter Brotzmann's four-day festival at the venue, and saw their peers, bassist Leon Brichard and tenor saxophonist Idris Rahman, join them for several pieces. While Satoh and Moriyama both formed part of the blistering Yosuke Yamashita Trio - whose output helped spur a critical period in the development of free and modern jazz in Japan - Rahman and Brichard functioned, for a moment, as their contemporary British doppelgangers as splinter members of one of the UK's most notable experimental jazz groups, Ill Considered. The result is a blisteringly free, metrically rule-flouting live performance born of a real confluence of greats.

Review: Very little is known about the collective of musicians behind the SAULT project, but their music in many ways speaks for itself. Earlier in the year they delivered Untitled (Black Is), a heartfelt, angry and righteous set of soul, funk, drill and spoken word tracks that provided a brilliant commentary on what it means to be black in 2020. It's a contender for album of the year, for sure, and the good news is that this speedy follow-up is every bit as essential. It's undoubtedly more celebratory than its predecessor, but every bit as musically detailed, combining cutting-edge electronics and all manner of infectious rhythms with enlightening vocals and all manner of live jazz, soul, punk-funk and jazz-funk instrumentation (as well as some seriously evocative orchestration).

Review: After years of collaboration on ECM recordings, including Characters On A Wall, French clarinettist Louis Sclavis and pianist Benjamin Moussay now present a collaborative album, Unfolding. With a program of original compositions, of which two-thirds are by Moussay and the rest by Sclavis, they create an intimate and chamber-like dialogue where lyrical moments and playful inventiveness collide. Their improvisations flow patiently and explore each theme with a rare creativity. This warm, exploratory approach highlights the depth of their musical connection, and it was all recorded at Studios La Buissonne in Southern France in March 2024.

Review: Habibi Funk co-founder Jannis Stuertz first came across "the Holy Grail of Sudanese funk", Saif Abu Bakr and The Scorpions "Jazz, Jazz, Jazz", while browsing eBay listings a few years back. His interest piqued, he took a trip to Sudan to track down the musicians who had made a ridiculously rare LP that was changing hands for thousands of pounds online. Some four years later, his wish to reissue the set has finally come through. It was originally recorded in Kuwait in 1980 and brilliantly joins the dots between American funk, soul and rhythm and blues, traditional Sudanese vocals and rhythmic arrangements, and even a dash of Congolese soukkous. It's the first full album Habibi Funk has reissued, and with good reason: it's near perfect from start to finish.

Review: Originally planned for release last year to mark the 50th anniversary of the album's creation, Gil Scott-Heron's most renowned full-length returns in stunning, audiophile quality sound. This time round, the album has been stretched across two discs, both of which have been pressed at 45rpm for louder sound. Created by Scott-Heron and musical sparring partner Brian Jackson with the assistance of producer Bob Thiele, Pieces of a Man remains an incredible album, with a string of classic cuts - think 'Home is Where The Hatred Is', 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' and 'Save the Children' - being joined by such lesser-celebrated delights as the fizzing 'Lady Day and John Coltrane', the blissful 'I Think I'll Call It Morning' and 'A Sign of the Ages'.

Review: This seminal collaborative album by Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson was released in 1975 but gets a special reissue for Record Store Day 2024. It blends jazz, soul and acute political commentary with Scott-Heron's powerful spoken-word lyrics alongside Jackson's innovative woodwind arrangements. The title track reflects the duo's global perspective and highlights the struggles for freedom and equality that are still so relevant today. The album's fusion of groove, intellect and activism marked a significant moment in Scott-Heron's career. With its poignant social messages and rich instrumentation, this record remains a timeless work of political and musical significance.

Review: El Palmas Music is behind this welcome revival of Sexteto Fantasia's album, led by Venezuelan pianist Virgilio Armas, and originally from in 1968. His illustrious career includes collaborations with Tito Puente, Paulinho da Costa, and Stan Getz, among other greats, and Estamos en Algo delights with its diverse rhythms. They are drawn from local Latin American sounds like guaracha, pachanga, mambo, boogaloo, cha cha cha, and bolero. Described as a dynamic sextet aiming to innovate within the competitive salsa scene, their music also embraces Latin jazz and bossa nova influences as Virgilio Armas directs a talented lineup featuring Domingo Moret, Rodolfo BuenaNo, Guillermo Taribe, Hugo Liendo and Gabriel Ruiz.

Review: A saxophonist at the pinnacle of his game, Shabaka Hutchings presents 'Afrikan Culture, on which he explores the rich musical traditions of the African continent and combines them with contemporary, self-affirming themes. Remarkably for how well-touted his name is, this is Hutchings' first ever solo LP, bringing it to the masses under the name Shabaka (following on the smash success of Sons Of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming). It's a stunning, existential album which not only pays tribute to the Afrofuturist greats who precede him, but which, of course, looks squarely into the eyes of Afroftuture that will come after him.

Review: Composer and multi-instrumentalist Shabaka Hutchings releases his sophomore LP Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace', building on his increasingly impressive career working with Andre 3000, Sun Ra Arkestra and heading multiple bands - not least the, now dissolved, The Comet is Coming. The album marks the king's return to music, following his abandonment of the saxophone in 2023. Here he returns to his original instrumental calling, the clarinet, but a wide array of wind is on offer. The first single, the opening track 'End of Innocence', is a succinct clarinet and piano marriage. The reverberation of the keys softly emanates behind the masterfully controlled clarinet lead, with perfectly placed percussion sprinkled throughout. It's introspective, serene and understated - a supremely narrative feel that only instrumental jazz can give off.

Review: One of this year's Mercury Prize nominees, Wisdom Of Elders sees London saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings hitting a new ambitious high as he recorded the whole body of work with a troupe of South African musicians led by Mandla Mlangeni in one single day. Aptly described as afro-futurism, the collective melt down nuances of jazz, psychedelia and traditional South African music to paint a unique picture that's delightfully frenzied yet soulfully smooth all at once. From the big Rhodes washes and vocal textures of "The Observer" to the dramatic percussive tumbles and lonely trumpet of "The Observed" by way of epic multi-suite adventures such as "The Sea" and the incendiary opener "Mzwandile", Wisdom Of Elders lives up to its name with a spirit that's at once both future and timeless.
