Cat: BAB 009 RE. Rel: 17 Oct 22
7th Wonder - "Daisy Lady" (4:11)
Blackbusters - "Old Man" (4:25)
Review: 7th Wonder - "Daisy Lady" is such a special and in-demand tune that no matter how many times it gets reissued it always sells out. This latest pressing on Breaks & Beats is a hand-numbered and limited edition 7" that is backed with Blackbusters's 'Old Man'. It's a cosmic funk workout with some great synth magic drawn out and weaved into funky breaks with all the bells and whistles (literally.) But really that 7th Wonder jam is the one here with its pumping drums and lavish horn sections all making for a colourful and vibrant wedge of irresistible funk.

Akiko & Masayasu Tzboquchi - "Love Theme From Sparticus" (feat Mbanja Ritchy aka B-Bandj - Clear Day mix) (4:34)
Review: Tom Browne's 1980 single 'Funkin' For Jamaica' has long been something of an anthem - a hybrid funk/boogie classic that remains a staple in sets of hip-hop, disco and soul DJs alike. Given its ubiquity, covering the song is fraught with danger, but remarkably Japanese producer Akiko and guest vocalist Mbanja Richy have successfully put a new spin on it. Their take is subtly tougher and more synth-heavy, with bilingual French/English vocals, nods to Zouk music and a bassline so squelchy it could have been lifted from a P-funk record. Over on the flip, the pair go mellow, deep and laidback on a pleasingly skewed hip-hop soul cover of Terry Callier's legendary vocal interpretation of Alex North's 'Love Theme' from 'Spartacus'. Inspired stuff all told.

Blaze - "We Are One" (DJ Kawasaki Fusion Funk Re-Groove mix) (4:15)
Review: DJ Kawasaki fires up his tools and gets to work on a couple of tasty new edits here. The first is a slow disco mix of The Ananda Project's 'Cascades Of Colour' which is lush, low riding and built on loopy drums with silky synths that are finished with some sprinkles of cosmic melody up top. Sublime. Blaze's 'We Are One' then gets a special Fusion Funk Re-Groove mix which has more astral synth work ringing out from a tight and funk arrangement with lush bass lines and nice organic drums.

Soul Of Haringey (reissue)

Pip Archer - "Time To Boogie" (4:52)
Andrea Lyn - "Hold On To Your Heart" (3:32)
Jennifer Viban - "Miracles" (4:00)
The Curruthers Brothers - "What Do Ya?" (4:09)
Boss - "Ease The Tension" (3:15)
Review: A fantastic dub disco, funk and electro record straight from the heart of North London. First released in 1986, 'Soul Of Haringey' emerged as the sole release on the ultra-rare Advance Level Enterprise imprint, information on which is, even now, extremely difficult to track down and source. Among the featuring artists on the release are Pip Archer, Andrea Lynn, Jennifer Viban, The Curruthers Brothers, and Boss, all of whom are almost equally obscure, and only a few of whom ever went on to release anything else. It's these kinds of records, seemingly unassailed by the material urgencies of working life or careerism, that beguile us the most. 'Time To Boogie' is as raw and uncut as can be, its trilling synth bells and double-claps revealing some early stirrings of UK grime in the track's latter half. Then there's the downtempo soul of 'Hold On To Your Heart' by Lynn, as smooth as smooth can be, while Viban's 'Miracles' is an equally blissful prayer to the electro-disco-funk tutelary god, with its numinous snare bursts and adhesively soft pad divans swearing fealty to the belief in miracles. Boss' and The Curruthers Brothers' contributions are just as creamy, offering two further authentic, homespun falsetto'ers for assuaging heartbreak and redemption.

Andy Aaron & The Mean Machine - "Right On Time" (3:30)
Review: For their latest must-check rare soul reissue, German crate diggers TRAMP Records take us back to 1969 and the sole single from Philadelphia outfit Andy Aaron & the Mean Machine. A-side "You're The Only One" is a superb chunk of bass-heavy soul full of energetic drumming, fuzzy horn motifs, inspired lead vocals by Bonnie Blanchard and sax solos from none other than Grover Washington (then a young musician and member of the Mean Machine). Equally as potent is instrumental flipside "Right On Time", which is a riotous funk workout that boasts more lung-busting solos from an on form Washington.

Review: The Super Disco Edits stable returns to action with a new set of edits, two disco-leaning versions of B & The Family's disco classics. The first is the instantly recognisable "A Good Time", a disco bomb like no other and exactly the sort of tune that makes people think of the word 'party'. On the flip, "You're Gonna Love Me" is more of a boogie monster reinterpreted and juiced up with some extra electro power in its low-end and, of course, its chunky beats and percussion to create that added dance floor effect. Review: The backstory to this one is great and goes something like this: Darryl Baalki is a reclusive person who grew up with his mother and his father's record collection. That was his only connection to the outside world and he somehow thought it was all the music ever recorded so for him to make something new he had to combine parts from it together. Whether true or not, his Flower Out Of A Stone EP on Deeppa is a sublime affair. It clocks in somewhere between deep house with serious jazzy chops and loungey downbeat, with the titile track boasting an impressively soulful vocal. Elsewhere, the organic instruemntation and improvsed grooves of Faze Action at their best come to mind, with sultry sax lines, spiritual vocal whispers and feathery drums all oozing a certain timeless musical class.

Get Off The Ground

Get Off The Ground (Bottom End version)
Get Off The Ground (short version)
Floating
Review: One of the rarest Jazz dance anthems finally re-issued on Freestyle Records. For those of you not familiar with this track, it has become somewhat of an enigma amongst collectors and DJs for the last 23 years, eluding the most ardent of diggers and dancers alike. First picked up for 10p by Jazz DJ Chris Bangs in a second-hand shop, the tune fast became a firm favourite with the dancers who battled at the now legendary Electric Ballroom, due in no small part to it's booming bass and frenetic changes, but also for the vocal crescendo which signalled for the losing dancers to "Get Off The Ground". This tradition was kept by Ballroom successors and Jazz dance dons Paul Murphy and Gilles Peterson, elevating the track to it's now legendary status. With nothing credited on the sleeve or label other than the words "The Bottom End", the original performers were almost impossible to track down. The track was originally recorded in the USA as a test disc for a studio monitor sub-woofer (specifically designed for Steely Dan's Pretzel Logic LP) and was recorded as a live jam with the musicians improvising most of the parts. A further twist in the story is that the musicians Don Baaska, Jamie Faunt, Ken Park and vocalist Elvira Scavelli had absolutely no idea of this record's existence, let alone its magnitude over on this side of the Atlantic. We're pretty sure that if it wasn't for the detective work of dedicated digger Seymour Nurse, they still wouldn't! Over the years many people have laid claim to the origins of the track, with different versions appearing by artists such as Working Week, Brother Davies Miles and Janet Lawson - all of whom added to the mystique and the appeal of finding the original! Luckily Seymour wasn't deterred and having dedicated over 20 years of his life to finding this seminal track, finally located composer Don Baaska in 2003. Only 5 copies of the original 12" have surfaced in the time since it's recording in 1974. It is presented here in it's full 8 minute "Bottom End Version" alongside a shorter version of "Get Off The Ground" and another mellower Jazz number "Floating".

Review: Consistently on-point and expertly dug, Originals continue to join the dots with creativity. Here we rewind to 1973 for Babe Ruth's biggest cut "The Mexican". Its lolloping, rolling bassline and spacious drums have been sampled by many but Organised Konfusion's use is definitely one of the best. Needle down and listen as Prince Po and Pharoahe Monche lay down lucid 1991 flows with a serious political agenda that's still just as resonant today. Timeless on both sides.

Review: With Slow Burn, Baby Rose showcases a remarkable evolution from her previous album, expanding her sonic palette into a raw and sprawling exploration of American music. Teaming up with BADBADNOTGOOD, Rose delves into progressive r&b, infusing elements of Muscle Shoals, psych, jazz, and Americana to create a mesmerizing collection of songs. The collaboration with BADBADNOTGOOD proved to be an instant and fruitful partnership, with lead single 'One Last Dance' capturing the essence of Rose's vision from the very first meeting. This track, disguised as a love song, is actually an ode to lost friendship, with Rose's vocals layered into a hypnotic lullaby over Chester Hansen's dreamlike bassline. Throughout Slow Burn, Rose draws inspiration from her experiences driving between the chaos of DC and the tranquility of the Carolina countryside, allowing her mind to wander and explore internal dialogues. The title track exemplifies this introspective journey, with soft, ambling drums and lyrical repetitions evoking patient desire. Overall, 'Slow Burn' exudes a sense of intimacy and mystery, with each song arriving on tiptoe, inviting listeners into Rose's world of introspection and emotion. As a vocalist and lyricist, Rose demonstrates boundless potential, supported by the synergy of her collaboration with BADBADNOTGOOD. This album marks a significant step forward for Baby Rose, hinting at even greater heights to come in her musical journey.

Higher Still... (3:29)
Review: Reissues aside, this EP marks synthesizer legend Wally Badarou's first appearance on vinyl since 1989. Given the high regard in which the former Grace Jones, Herbie Hancock and Talking Heads collaborator is rightly held, this is undoubtedly big news. All four tracks were previously self-released by Badarou digitally, though all but his most dedicated fans would have missed them. "Fisherman (I'Theme)" is an undeniably jaunty, Caribbean jazz-funk treat in Badarou's trademark style, while "The Daiquri Diaries (Vintage Extended)" sees the great man soloing over a dreamy, Balearic style groove. On the flip you'll find the tropical synth-calypso of "Awa" and "Higher Still", a sublime jaunt into eyes-closed ambient territory that sounds like it come have come from Andreas Vollenweider's studio sometime in the mid 1980s.

Review: Despite not releasing all that much in 2018, Canadian nu-jazz combo BADBADNOTGOOD's reputation continued to rise. That was in no small part due to their eye-catching collaboration with Little Dragon, which resulted in the digital release of "Tried" back in September. Now the track has been given a deserved seven-inch single release by Ninja Tune. With LD lead vocalist Yukimi Nagano doing her best to channel the spirit of Minnie Riperton, "Tried" has a similarly languid, jazz/folk/soul fusion feel as some of the best works by Rotary Connection. BADBADNOTGOOD's admiration of the Charles Stepney-produced band comes through loud and clear through the choice of instruments and arrangements. For further proof, check the accompanying flipside instrumental mix.

And so it proved back in 2010 when the latter edited the former's 'Honey.' It sold out in super quick time but now gets a cheeky one-sided hand-stamped reissue on yellow wax having previously fetched up to a hundred quid on second-hand markets. The 70's loss is 2017's gain as both finally get the justice they deserve on limited 300 copies. Fronted by Parliament/Funkadelic and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's Glenn Goins, "Hey Girl" is a soft honey-toned balled while "Beautiful Birds" ups the gear for a pumping soul disco romp that's powered by triumphant urgency. Here he dishes up two more sneaky reworks, this time for Bochum-based Kala Kuta Soul. You're unlikely to find a more gorgeously sunny, summery rework than the bouncy jazz-funk-meets-disco soul flex of A-side "Tik-Tok". It's loose and groovy, of course, but just loopy and bouncy enough to interest house heads as well as disco-soul diggers. Review: It may have actually been released in 1987, but this 7" feels like a time capsule to the mid-70s. Backed by her brother George on production for A.G.B. Records, these two tracks stand out from the rest of her debut LP with their classic, timeless charm. On Side-1, 'Let's Stay In Love' radiates a dreamy, mellow vibe. Bailey's sultry, soft vocals flow effortlessly over funky basslines and melodic organ flourishes, creating a lounge-like atmosphere that's both soulful and inviting. He has, we're told, recently been recording a new album and the two tunes pressed up here on Big Crown are taken from it. El Michels Affair man Leon Michels is the go-to producer once more for Bailey and they strike gold as always with 'Dance With Me'. It is a hella catchy two-stepper that harks back to the earliest days of reggae. Review: Back Pluwatsch, or simply Bajka, is an Indian-born, South-African raised singer with diverse catalogue of music, and an equally compelling set of vocal chords. Her voice was first picked up by London's Jazzman circa 2005, and has travelled across other like like Ubiquity, Raw Tapes, and even on NYC house-techno conglomerate, Ibadan. Philophon feels like a much more natural place for her music to prosper on, a label that's been on our radar since day one, and always comes heavily recommended. "The World" is a true pearl of a song, charged and catapulted into the ether by a deep, raw percussive sway and, of course, Bajka's singular voice. "Invisible Joy" is a similarly deep and tropical, but here the tone is much more jazzy, reminding us of Sun Ra in places. All in all, this is some pretty killer material.

Taken from 1960, "Bumble Bees" by Baker is a chiming, doo-wop sing-a-long love song with a tastefully disgruntled character, while Baker & Wilson provide the excellent and X-rated "Think Twice", which sings about taboo topics like cocaine, pussy and reefa. Up first on side A is sometime Sensations member Yvonne Baker's 'You Didn't Say a Word', a stomping and soaring 1967 cut that sounds like it was a little influenced by the soundtracks to British spy movies of the swinging sixties. Original copies of the single regularly change hands for four-figure sums, so its appearance on this seven-inch is certainly welcome. Hattie Winston's 'Pictures Don't Lie' is arguably even rarer, with the Ronettes' style number - the production apes Phil Spector's 'wall of sound' approach - originally appearing on a promo-only "45" in the mid-1960s.

Having released Bala Desejo's anthemic single, 'Baile De Mascaras', back in May 2023, Mr. Bongo could sense that they had a summer classic on their hands. The label always thought that it had the potential to find fans in a dance music audience; and in a further twist of fate, the sensational DJ, producer, and radio presenter Jamz Supernova recently graced their Great Escape in-store event with a phenomenal DJ set. After some feverish digging and emailing to her team, Bongo discovered that she was a fan of the original song and had made a personal edit to play in her DJ sets. Gilles had heard Jamz spinning the edit and asked for a copy, and by sheer coincidence and good fortune, it all fell into place. The track is a beast of an edit that gets heavier and deeper as it progresses.

Spooky (4:10)
Hurt So Bad (3:45)
Review: A timely revisit to two of the stand out covers on Italian jazz/lounge posterboy Andrea Balducci's 2012 album Bloom. "Spooky" is a soft, sweet and succinctly measured take on Shapiro and Middlebrooks' mid 60s standard while "Hurts So Bad" is a respectful twist on Weinstein, Harshman and Randazzo's similar era classic that was made famous by Linda Ronstadt years later.

Blacker (4:17)
Cubafro Con Amigos (4:17)
Review: A reissue of two historic, important cuts by The Ballistic Brothers. 'Blacker' and 'Cufabro Con Amigos' helped define the transitional crossover between early 90s funk and breaksy electronica in the UK. The Ballistic Brothers were the sonic thesis, antithesis and synthesis of Ashley Beedle and David Hill, both of whom later went on to work behind the scenes in the music industry, but whose earlier contributions are still duly noted. 'Blacker' appeared on their earliest album, The Balistic Brothers vs. The Eccentric Afros Volume 1, and was symptomatic of the sonic stirrings of breakbeat, acid jazz and broken beat at the time, channelling a string-laden suspense, and a wise, sampled vocal snippet from Gil Scott Heron. Heron's wisdom undercuts the track, and hears his musings on race and moral superiority.

Are You For Real (3:55)
Review: These previously unreleased tracks from Revelations member Phillip Balou were offered to Super Disco Edits by one-time British soul journalist David Nathan, who worked alongside the musician and band mate John Simmons at the tail end of the 1970s. A-side "Ain't Nothing Like The Love", a gospel inspired slice of sumptuous soul complete with jazzy guitar solos and an evocative lead vocal from Ballou, is undoubtedly the pick of the two tracks and well worth anyone's hard-earned cash. That said, deep and sugary flipside "For Real" - a thrillingly evocative slow jam full of gospel style choral backing vocals, sumptuous electric piano and sweeping, synthesized strings - is almost as good.

I Need You (2:58)
Review: Four years ago, Super Disco Edits unearthed a stash of previously unreleased solo recordings by sometime Revelation member (and session vocalist on countless classic disco and boogie hits) Phillip Ballou. Having released just two of those songs - the brilliant 'Ain't Nothing Like The Love' and 'Nothing For Real'- back in 2017, they've finally decided to offer-up two more. A-side 'We'll Be Together' is particularly impressive, with Ballou adding his silky, effortlessly soulful vocals to a sparkling backing track that adds spacey synthesizer sounds and cosy female backing vocals to a Philly Soul inspired groove. Over on the flip, 'I Need You' is a sugary but heartfelt ballad in which Ballou is accompanied by little more than an electric piano and a few sustained synthesizer chords. It's a spine-tingling combination.

Something About Love (4:19)
Review: Fresh from inspiring the global disco community with a tasty debut 7", Portuguese duo the Bam Jam band (AKA Pedro Teneiro and Sergio Alves) return with a similarly impressive sequel. A-side 'Keepin' On' is a genuinely killer workout - a low-slung bass guitar-propelled chunk of revivalist dancefloor disco-jazz rich in sustained organ chords, funky Clavinet licks and restless, Latin-influenced piano riffs and solos. The duo's love of memorable basslines comes to the fore once more on 'Something About Love', a more languid, picturesque and bittersweet affair in which slow, eyes-closed piano patterns and squelchy synths stretch out across a relaxed mid-tempo groove. An artist to watch in 2025 for sure.

Nothing I Wanna Know About (4:09)
Bad Line (4:41)
Review: When it comes to scorching, 21st century deep funk, few can compete with long-serving Aussie outfit The Bamboos. That much was proved (not that it was in any doubt of course) by the band's most recent album, 2021's superb Hard Up. 'Nothin' I Wanna Know', the Lance Ferguson-helmed band's latest single, was one of the highlights of that set - a punchy, impeccably produced scene anthem in waiting that boasts some superb drum breaks, razor-sharp guitars, rising horns and a killer lead vocal from Kylie Audist. They flip the script on brand-new B-side 'Bad Line', a relaxed and bouncy, piano-heavy number that sounds like the band's take on the classic 1960s Stax sound.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has light surface marks/scratches, but otherwise in working order***

2020 marks two decades since the Bamboos, Australia's premier deep funk combo, first made an impression in their home city of Melbourne. The Lance Ferguson-helmed outfit have been busy in the studio this year cooking up some suitably celebratory music to mark their 20th birthday, with this must-check "45" the latest missive to hit the streets. A-side 'Hard Up' is a typically raw and heavy affair, with regular vocalist Kylie Audist excelling herself over a typically tight-but-loose blend of hazy horns, Hammond motifs, crunchy drums and flash-fried guitar licks. Just as impressive is B-side 'Ride on Time', a surprise - but genuinely killer - heavy funk translation of Black Box's 1989 piano house favourite of the same name.

Bambu - "The Real Thing" (vocal mix)
Jinadu - "Natural Thing" (Domu's Mutant Soul remix)
Panic - "Jam" (feat MC Chick-A-Boo - Charlie Dark dubstrumental)
Review: A supremely cool sampler from nu-soul label Bitches Brew that features a wealth of different talents coming together to make some sweet and smooth treats. Opener Jam features MC Chickaboo (Soul 2 Soul, Goldie, Timo Maas) on the vocals and Attica Blues' Charlie Dark on the remix, turning it into a lowdown "dubstrumental" complete with rollicking drums and some seriously squelchy bass. Jinadu's Natural Thing gets remixed by broken beat hero Domu and it's a typically enthralling workout of crisp jazzy drums and  beautiful floating melodies placed delicately on top.
Label founder Cosmo weighs in with the gorgeous Mistaken, done under her Ch'i alias and with vocalist Billie Godfrey up front on the mic, turning in a deliciously melancholy yet powerful vocal, backed up with some Roy Ayres-style vibes action for good measure. The Broken mix of Jinadu's Turning The Tide is another revelation, mixing up Rhodes stabs and some precision beats along with a vocal that bores it's way into your memory bank after a couple of listens.
Two standout cover versions round off this excellent compilation - Bamba take on Linda Williams' jazz-funk classic Elevate Your Mind and also turn in a Latin-flavoured version of Stevie Wonder's The Real Thing. Both of them are faithful and clearly done with a lot of reverence to the originals - a testament to a label that has soul running through it's veins as this collection shows.

Bianco Rosso E Verdone (2:43)
Review: Banda Maje, an ever-changing collective helmed by composer/keyboardist Peppe Maiellano and producer/rapper/DJ Tonico Setlanta, have delivered a hugely impressive debut single here. The collective's soon to be trademark sound is rooted in vintage funk, library music and old Italian film soundtracks, but has a contemporary freshness that makes both showcased tracks avoid the pitfalls of empty nostalgia. A-side 'Formelesse' is warming and groovy, with shuffling funk beats and undulating bass guitar underpinning 1970s synth sounds, jazz-funk vocalisations and refined horn riffs. On the flip, they deliver a deliciously breezy take on one of their favourite Italian movie themes, re-casting it as a summery slab of jazz-funk/samba fusion.

Bandoni is a talented multi-instrumentalist and is also the former drummer for the Craig Charles Fantasy Funk Band so knows his sound inside out. Opener 'Kool Trippin' is an uptempo classic with energy to get any floor going. On the flip is another bit of pure bait for B-boys and girls with irresistible funk breaks and catchy hooks. Review: The Resense series continues with aplomb... "Calypso Invasion" is a stunning dot-joiner. Swiss act Bandura has taken a 1946 live recording of The Duke From Trinidad and given it a stunning contemporisation. With a soulful groove and tight broken beats, it's a fine fusion of both generations and territories. Meanwhile on the B we find Resense regulars Sono Rhizmo letting rip with a cheeky 1950s voodoo jazz revamp. Both tracks are impeccable.

Review: James Bangura is up next on New York City's Mister Saturday Night. The Washington-based artist is an exciting new talent: said to be a nomad who takes in various influences and can never be pinned down to one style. Drum 'n' bass was said to be a huge influence on Bangura during his younger years back in Alabama, and he revisits those seminal beats here on Interpretation Of Sound. From the contorted groove of 'Big Change', a sharp stepper that incorporates dub techno influences, to the meditative and polyrhythmic hypnotism of 'The Diffuser' or the depressive jungle introspections of 'Taking Loose' - this one really takes the genre into exciting new realms. All You Could Do (alternate version)
Review: Ahead of his debut album dropping on Monkeytown, Alex Banks gives the world a sneak peek at the sound he has been conjuring up by way of this single. The title track features the haunting vocal tones of Elizabeth Bernholz, whose siren song peals out over a frenetic mash of electronic beat mangling that calls to mind earlier strains of Clark. "Phosphorus" also gets busy in the edit, as infinitesimal sonic details bounce off of each other with the swagger of 2-step and some emotive synth work. Phon O reworks "All You Could Do" with a taut, stepping techno rhythm and a hopeful synth lilt, while Banks himself offers up an alternative version that moves in a slower, more spacious manner compared to the original.
