Review: The mysterious Bakground returns to Lobster Theremin and he's rolling with esteemed company as Sangam adds his deep threads to the weave. "90s Living" lives up to its name; big immersive atmospheric jungle, all loose around the edges but held together so firmly. "Intermission" provides no respite - the only break is the one that rolls beneath the shimmering keys. Meanwhile the flip "Keeper Of The Lost" takes us down to 150 on a robust set of rolling breaks before "Carousel" brings us back down to earth softly, deeply and ambiently.

When I Drop Dem Bass
Cat: BBAZ 02. Rel: 08 Jan 20
  1. When I Drop Dem Bass (feat Kenny Boothe & Daddy Freddy) (5:08)
  2. Lazer Beam (feat Awesome Don) (5:00)
Review: With a title like "When I Drop Dem Bass", you'd expect this single from Bazooka to doff a cap to the early years of jungle culture, and specifically the ragga-fired, soundsystem-busting records on which the scene was built. That's exactly what you get, with veteran mic men Daddy Freddy and Ken Boothe adding rapped and sung vocals to a punchy backing track rich in Amen breaks, powerful bass and reggae style piano stabs. The retro-futurist fun continues on side B, where a stabbing, mind-altering melody and dub-wise sounds rise above a suitably filthy rhythm track and pulverizing wobble bass.

  4. No Dice (2:33)
Review: Linking up for the first time since 'Thoroughbred', kindred spirits Sam Binga and Hyroglifics collide to create their biggest collaborative body of work to date; 'Wicked & Bad'. Not just a kooky title, it truly is loaded to the lips with naughty... The opening system shaker 'Wicked' with long-time compadre Redders, the ice cold electro thrills of 'Wits End', the Riko Dan-front bubbler 'Bad' and the trippy instrumental grime finale 'No Dice' are all primed with the wickedness, and indeed badness, one needs to survive in these nonviable times. Critical in more ways than one.

Cat: BD 01. Rel: 21 Apr 20
  1. Trust The Process (7:36)
  2. Real Highs (6:18)
Review: Fresh produce! Neighbour Recordings launch a brand new label Bakery Dubs and you can smell the whole goodness a mile off. A new stable for the unclassifiable and experimental, the label launches with two D&B jams from label co-boss Bike TM. "Trust The Process" takes a technoid stance on the genre with Kid Drama style simplicity and unhurried breezy pads. "Real Highs" flips for a deeper jam that nods to more of a Goodlooking rooting. Watch out for those jazzy little flurries. Tasty.

Fault Current
Cat: YP 001. Rel: 08 Sep 20
  1. Fault Current (4:46)
  2. Retrocognition (5:16)
Review: Brand new talent from Kenmore, Washington; Black Yukon Sucker Punch hurls himself into the ether with this foundation-fired self-release. Tapping into that classic late 90s/early 2000s techstep sound, both cuts rattle bones with minimal muscle and maximum tension. 'Fault Current' is a sci-fi inspired wriggler with twisted alien FX wrapping tightly around sinewy two-steps. 'Retrocognition' hits with a little more neuro, psychedelic touches. Think early Audio Blueprint and you're on the right dancefloor.

Touch Up The Key
Cat: LNDB 031. Rel: 24 Sep 19
  1. Touch Up The Key (4:10)
  2. Dread (5:07)
Review: Liondub's 10 year anniversary celebrations continue with this savage slab of ragga jungle. This time the captain Liondub takes to the controls himself alongside fellow US jungle veteran Jah Boogs while vocal guidance comes from one of the most distinctive MCs in the game: Bristol's Blackout Ja. Here we find him in fiery form as "Touch Up The Key" brocks out in all directions over a precision-tuned subby bass wobble. "Dread" flips for a sunnier side of the stack as Blackout pays homage to his roots with more of a melodic flow to his signature gravel-toned bars. Loaded!

Death Row (12")
Cat: DROW 001. Rel: 11 Dec 19
  1. Death Row (3:57)
  2. Murderin' MC (6:55)
Review: "Death Row" was Blame and Justice's first ever 12" release way back in and now it gets reissued for the first time. It's a hard hitting melange of big drum breaks, spoken word snippets and barrelling drums that is fun and high impact jungle of the highest order. "Murderin' M.C." is a darker tune with a rumbling bassline and shooting lasers synths that bring a more electronic and futurist feel, but still designed for club destruction. Big ups Modern Urban Jazz for the work on this one.

Cat: NARRATIVES 016. Rel: 06 May 20
  1. Mr Parkers Voice (feat Rhyming In Fives) (7:04)
  2. Drum Machine (5:22)
Review: The Narratives lads Blocks & Escher are back spinning another fine yarn, and you'd be wise to pay attention. "Mr Parkers Voice" sees them teaming up with old friend, the somewhat elusive Rhyming In Fives. So simple in its elements yet so soulfully effective, everything is in the chord progression and space and sporadic elements. Pure future. For something with just a smidgeon of past jump on "Drum Machine". A grizzled techstep damager, there's a strong Trace and DCi4 vibe deep in the evil mix here. These guys seriously never fail.

Review: Already big weapons in Dead Man's Chest sets, Bluematter unleash their second EP together following last year's powerful emergence on E-Beamz. The joined forces of Jozef K and Thomas Ragsdale, Bluematter sees the two experimental artists join forces to make some seriously interesting contemporary jungle from ominous heavy pressure rave dynamics ("Bunker") to meditative ambience ("Crystal") by way of deep dreaming Good Looking-flavoured tackle ("Zeus") Nothing to be blue about here, no sir.

  1. Booca - "Breath Of My Spirit" (6:21)
  2. DSP - "Just A Touch" (5:56)
  3. Ben Kei - "Desolate" (6:07)
Review: Absolute flames from the Transmute crew as they put together this sweet trippy VA three-piece. Booca takes the lead and sets the tone with "Breath Of My Spirit". Jazzy keys and baggy breaks, there's a lush summery feel running throughout the blend and it's backed by the much more direct and classic sounding jungle of DSP's "Just A Touch". Dalston Chillies' founder Ben Kei closes the EP with the heaviest cut of the set; nasty breaks, evil mentasms and ominous strings. This is war music.

Cat: SUBTITLESUK 029. Rel: 08 Apr 15
  1. Brain Crisis & Spline - "Mad" (5:17)
  2. Brain Crisis - "Camatcho" (5:16)
Review: TeeBee's Subtitles Music operation are on fairly unstoppable form right now and their latest 12" drop offers an enlightening glance into the label's near future - it's an exciting place clearly! The appropriately titled Mad pairs up Russian producer Brain Crisis with Spline for two of the nastiest drum and bass cuts we've subjected the Juno office stereo to this week. "Mad" is as hard and heavy as they come; perhaps that's why the punishing beats momentarily drop away to briefly allow some breathing space soundtracked by plucked guitar before the madness descends again. If anything "Camatcho" is more of a skull crusher and it has us quite excited for the upcoming album on Subtitles from Brain Crisis.

Whispers In My Ear (Break Remix)
Cat: SYMM 032. Rel: 14 Sep 20
  1. Break - "Whispers In My Ear" (feat MC GQ - Break remix) (4:16)
  2. Break & Total Science - "Dog's Dinner" (Mefjus remix) (4:16)
Review: MC GQ has a pedigree that stretches all the way back to the early jungle nights of AWOL and his presence on this new version of Whispers In My Ear by Break shows he can imprint his personality on a piece of vinyl with a bare minimum of chatting. That's how good he is. Break knows what he's doing too, and his the gnarly electronic harmonics and descending one note bass riff, combined with fresh sounding, spacious breakbeat action, make this the kind of workout that DJs will build their set around dropping. Dog's Dinner with Total Science gets remixed by Mefjus in powerful fashion too, a little more roughneck perhaps than its A-side companion, but a choice selection of ruthlessly applied sonics all the same.

Got A Feelin'
Cat: SYMM 030. Rel: 05 Feb 20
  1. Got A Feelin' (4:31)
  2. Sesame Seeds (5:23)
Review: Symmetry bossman and all-round don Break barges into 2020 with his first fresh produce of the decade and it's not a moment too soon. "Got A Feelin'" weighs in on the groany sewer sounds that are still characterising the genre right now, but done in a subversive, gritty funk way that's unique to him. Flip for some serious sample schooling. Returning to the source of one of jungle's most well-favoured breaks (the clue's in the title) and making new edits using different parts of the record, it's a true breakbeat odyssey with all the subs and detuned stabs a classic jungle hat-tip could ever wish for. Break it down.

Intrigue 15: The Anniversary Collection

  2. Superior Selectionz & Ben Soundscape - "Justa" (5:37)
  3. Roygreen & Protone & Ben Soundscape - "Ruffneck" (5:39)
  4. Luch & Joakuim - "Lifespan" (5:41)
Review: Since 2003, the Intrigue crew has been providing Bristol clubbers with regular doses of liquid funk and musically expansive drum and bass, first at their regular parties and, since 2008, on their offshoot label. Predictably, there's much to enjoy on this celebratory 12". Old pal Break steps up first with a veritable warm summer breeze of a roller, "Mind's Eye" - all punchy, snare-heavy beats, acoustic guitars, rumbling bass and dreamy freestyle vocals - before Superior Selectionz and Ben Soundscape join forces for the slightly more weighty but no less attractive "Justa". Over on side B, Soundscape returns to action alongside Ryogreen and Protone on the wobble bass-propelled stepper "Ruffneck", while Lurch - a lesser-known stalwart of the Bristol scene - delivers some delicious, Afro-tinged liquid funk alongside Joakuim. Rock solid.

Cat: BMRSF 007. Rel: 11 Sep 18
  1. Damn Hot (4:31)
  2. Damn Hot (Danny Scrilla remix) (4:52)
Review: The seventh volume in Beat Machine's ongoing "Swinging Flavors" series of singles arrives on vibrant turquoise vinyl. This time round, it's a relatively new artist at the controls: Breaka, whose debut 12" on Holding Hands tickled our fancy earlier in the year. Happily, "Damn Hot" lives up to its title, brilliantly joining the dots between the snappy drum machine snares, cut up vocal samples and incessant hustle of Chicago Juke, the crunchy breakbeat since of old school jungle, and the futurist intent of contemporary drum and bass. It's really rather good, all told, with Danny Scrilla's flipside remix - a spacey fusion of intergalactic synthesizer melodies and ruffneck early '90s jungle tropes - also hitting the sweet spot.

Review: The lion has awoken... 25 years after its original rave-blazing release "Exodus" gets a timely rewind. Following the first part which featured professor choppage himself Luke Vibert, Sneakers Social Club invite more dons to the fold: Special Request blows the speakers off with a rewind-loaded switch session that follows a path of its own while Bristol heads Die and Addison Groove get busy on the rave breaks. Both crucial updates on a seminal classic.

Cat: ELOISA 006. Rel: 13 Oct 20
  1. Runaway (6:01)
  2. Unleashed (6:00)
  3. Articulate (6:24)
Review: With huge tracks hitting across the board on the likes of 31, Critical and now Chris Inperspective's exciting new imprint Eloisa, Bungle's never sat so comfortably in his own groove before. A longtime Sao Paulo drum & bass treasure, he seldom fails to deliver and these three cuts are fine examples of his understated craft. 'Runway' is the heaviest cut of the bunch with echoes of 'Cocooned' in the high voltage bassline while 'Unleashed' rolls with subtle theatre thanks to the jazzy swinging drums and 'Articulate' closes on a strange rhythm. Blocky, woozy and nodding very heavily at techno. It's hard not to make comparisons to Krust right here. And no compliment comes higher.

Review: Andre Sobota is Bungle, the Brazilian producer tearing up the contemporary drum & bass landscape with his hard hitting rhythms. He only tends to put out one EP a year, but that changes this autumn with three missives all landing in the space of two months. This is the first and features four cuts on two slabs of wax. "Mutant" starts out as an icy liquid roller before being ripped apart by rasping synths, "Dictate" is a glistening stomper with raga vocal stabs and melodic shimmers while "Enigma" is a dark, twisting and turning track that takes you down a rabbit hole. "Step Two" finishes things off in rump-wiggling jump up fashion and closes out a devastating release.

Review: Techmosphere 03 is a monstrous 25 track album on Scientific Records that will be available digitally soon, but before that comes a sampler packed with six gems from it, three of which are originals, and the other three are remixes. Silence Groove's remix of "Northern Light" and his original "Patterns" are two silky and liquid rollers that go super deep, while Electrosoul's take on Naibu's "Clouds" is much more ragged and rhythmic thanks to its crisp hits and rasping bass. There's more raw energy on the crashing loops of DJ Trax's "Just Breath" but a heavenly vocal will also suspend you in a celestial atmosphere in between drum breaks.

This tasty four tracker comes from the combined creative minds of Zero T and Beta 2 and they come through in style with a modern-day reproduction of the vintage Metalheadz sound we all know and love. Tough drums, sprinkled with plenty of future soul and devastating bass, "Misdemeanour" in particular is prickly yet emotional stuff while "In My Head" brings a dose of joyful soul and "Dead Cert" ends on a more angsty tip.

Review: Contemplative, playful and from the heart; both Spearhead bossman BCee and one of the genre's most prolific singer/songwriters Charlotte Haining share many traits, as they show here on their debut collaborative album Life As We Know It. With topics ranging from mental health to adoption and loss of loved ones, the duo traverse the drum & bass hinterland with some of the most thoughtful songs either of them have ever written. Featuring cameos from the likes of Etherwood, DRS, Logistics, Kove and Tempza, vibes range from rocket-thrusting melancholy ('Give Me A Break'), glistening piano-laced minimalism ('Endlessly Unlimited') and all liquid things in between. Life-affirming.
