Barna Sound Machine - "It Goes Like This"
Review: New edits from Barna Soundmachine. Diana Ross 'I'm Gonna Make You Love Me' gets the rework on Side A. Side B contains 2 cuts. The classic Sharon Redd 'You're the One' receives a lengthening retreat; the old school B Boys should check 'It Goes Like This' using elements from the Dick Hyman Moog version of James Brown' Give It Up Turn It Loose', plus some other tasty riffs and melodies thrown into the mix.

The Breakbeat Junkie vs DJP - "Drop Down"
DJ Kid Stretch - "Bomb Style"
Niko - "Disco Monster"
Stickybuds - "Kingston Funk"
Review: The eighth volume of the Big M's sample heavy series gives some old school classics the dirty breakbeat treatment. First up sees Breakbeat Junkie and DJP take on Tag Team's "Whoomp! (There It Is)", while DJ Kid Stretch re-imagines the legendary "Rapper's Delight" by Sugarhill Gang, laying down some funky as hell strings and killer drum programming. Flip over for the twisted synth carnival that is "Disco Monster" by Niko and the wobbling "Kingston Funk" by Stickybuds, which samples Basement Jaxx's evergreen "Do Your Thing".

Review: Mr K takes on two boogie tracks here, giving them the extended Krivit golden touch. Side A features an edit of change's "Hold Tight", taken from their 1981 Atlantic LP "Miracles" and featuring Jocelyn Brown on vocals, with a super loud pressing - mid tempo disco soul doesn't get much better. Over on the flip he re-edits the classic Mtume/Lucas-Penned track "What'cha Gonna Do With My Lovin" by Stephanie Mills, originally out on 20th Century in 1979, and delivers a handy 9 minute edit perfect for DJ use.

The Fugitives/Archie - "Funky You" (2:18)
The Fugitives/Scottie - "Love Come Down" (3:30)
Review: When it comes to reissuing vintage soul and funk, Germany's Tramp label is second to none. For them, a new week means a new beauty to reissue, and this particular week in October is no different; in fact, this magnetic little 7" is fabulous in every way. First up is 1971's "Funky You" by The Fugitives and Archie, a group who only released a handful of EPs under that moniker, but whose most famous tune is here for you to own, and cause serious levels of angst among the collectors (as you can imagine, the original is rather hard to find). On the flip, the same outfit team up with Scottie for a more classic, sensual love ballad called "Love Come Down", the sort of song which makes your head turn and spin to ask the DJ: "mate, what's that!?".

Good For The City (Yesking remix)
Review: Taken from their forthcoming fourth album Chrome Waves, Dutch funksters Kraak & Smaak team up with Get Cape Wear Cape Fly's Sam Duckworth for this undeniably catchy pop gem. Peppered with disco bubbles and the trio's now-trademark pristine production, it's one of those tracks you'll be whistling for hours after you've heard it. For something a little deeper and dubbier head for Yesking's more sedate, meditative mix. A fine introduction to their album, Kraak & Smaak never disappoint.

Review: Bomb Strikes drop their first twelve of the year filled with all the weaponry a house party needs on one handy twelve inch. Pimpsoul commences proceedings with the chunky mid tempo electro bounce of "This Time" which craftily utilises a well known vocal hook, twisting it around the speaker worrying crunch. Bomb Strike regular Parker occupies similar territory on "Hear Ya Say" opting for a classic psychedelic rock staple to base his multi-layered sampledelic sound around. Antipodean talent Slynk opens the B Side with the Tom Drummond featuring "Woah Now" an expert uptempo melding of p-funk, boogie and filtered breaks whilst the excellently monikered Neon Steve goes all schizoid analogue freakout on the punchy dubstepper "I Got The".

Modern Funk Sampler 2

Quantic feat Spanky Wilson - "When You're Through"
DJ Aeon Seven - "Funky Furious"
Review: Another sampler from the recent Modern Funk compilation, mapping the biggest players of 2007 in the funk world.
Retaining the style and ethics of original funk compositions, but giving them a new millennial twist, these 2 tracks
should see some action on the dancefloor. Kicking things off is living legend Spanky Wilson, responsible for the
anthemic cover of 'Sunshine Of Your Love', an end of night classic at clubs the world over. Hooking up with the
closest contender to James Brown's crown as 'the hardest working man in show-business' - Mr Will Holland (aka
Quantic), this is one of the finest examples of old meeting new and it works a treat! On the flip, a relative newcomer
to the funk scene, France's Aeon Seven gives us a drum heavy workout with some fat horns and fresh Hammond
thrown into the mix.

Review: More consistent deep funk supremacy from Milan's coolest label, Record Kicks. Here they head west to the Caribbean for two rare-as-hens-teeth tropical funk joints that have never been released on 45. With a crisp plucked guitar and Hammond riff, Harold Lewis's rich vocals and a hip-swaying groove, it's not hard to hear why "The Little You Say" has been sought after for years in funk circles. Meanwhile on the B the Dutch Caribbean act Rolling Tone go for more of a frenetic horn-heavy riff that drops into a softer bed of tightly woven vocal shooby-dooby harmonies.

Review: Devilishly rare Philly soul funk from 75: Santiago were a Mandrill off-shoot headed up by Neftali Santiago, they only released one official single and it was rumoured to have only been pressed a few thousand times. Which is crazy considering how beautifully funky these originals are: "Feeling Good" lives up to its name with such positivity, harmony and soulful band orchestration (including some of the most beautiful jazz flutes of the era). "Land Of The Leaping No", meanwhile, is a raw carnal funk jam that's as sweet and sweaty as the original pressings are expensive.

Review: Having signed to Agogo Records this year, Hungarian swing-hop duo Savages Y Suefo unveil their latest material in the shape of a six track EP. "Ballroom Breakers" sees singer Judie Jay front a perky, quirky pop-swing sing-a-long. Combo serve up a piano-led interpretation and Rube Swinging deliver a trip-hoppish mix. Original, "Black Cat Jive", again is up-tempo, this time being a brass-led, mambofied dancefloor filler. With its soft reggae-tinged vibes, things relax a little for "Our World Our Style". Review: The Agogo imprint is on fire as of late, delivering powerful , and consistently excellent, wave of funk and soul from every angle. This time its Savages Y Suefo who take the helm, three artists who know how to get down and dirty with beats; they've already appeared on the label several times before and, along with some other like-minded beat junkies, know exactly how to contribute to this wild and multi-faceted catalogue. "Revolution" is an all-out party tune, a funky little number with a wacky groove and Ashley Slater's rugged vocals to add the dance floor mood; Mr Bird's remix adds a little 4/4 flavour to the beats, injecting some more power to those kicks, and making this a total club bomb.

Manhattan Night (Scrimshire remix) (4:19)
Review: Wah Wah 45s resident DJ Adam Scrimshire should be a familiar name to those who pay close to attention to the imprint's sneaky Wah Wah Dubplate series of bootleg 7" singles. This is his third outing for the hush-hush imprint, and sees him delivering two more soul-rich cut-ups capable of getting heads nodding and feet moving. A-side "Chaka's Night", a fearlessly loose cut-up of an old Chaka Khan gem that crafts a fluid, floor-friendly groove out of choppy, hip-hop style edits, is probably our pick, though the head-nodding jazz-funk bliss of flipside "Manhattan Night" is almost as good. Tasteful reworks for DJs who like their beats soulful; what's not to like?

Review: One of Wah Wah 45s' most consistent contributors Scrimshire runs fine lines in both original material and some absurdly funky edits (case in point, his stupendous take on "Grandma's Hands" a few years back") Here he's back on the edit trip with two takes on Margie Joseph. Crafting her gutsy soul into two crisp, floor-ready workouts, "Margie Moves Mountains" rolls out as the original before getting heavier and heavier while "Margie Loves Drums" (a shake-up of her Bill Withers' cover - "The Same Love Made Me Laugh") plays more on the stops/starts and clam-tight edits. Everybody Knows
Review: Let it be said that Shelton has one of the most distinctive voices in soul right now... The perfect amount of grit and full command, she comes at you like a female James Brown and is complemented perfectly by her golden toned backing crew The Gospel Queens. "Sinner" is laid down over a tight Brother Cliff Driver groove that's rich in groove and soft enough in dynamics to allow the band's vocals to really surge through the mix. "Everybody Knows", meanwhile, is a truly unique fusion of country, rhumba and blues where crisp guitars pluck a sturdy rhythm with Caribbean sentiment while Naomi outlays an emphatic narrative. Sinfully good.

This World (dub)
Review: You can always rely on the Peoples Potential Unlimited crew to dig deep and uncover the slept-on gems you'll have missed. This jukebox style 7" is another obscure killer - a 1987 electrofunk/soul groover from Shelve (pronounced, apparently, 'Shel-Ve'), a band formed and fronted by Californian producer Shelby Hurns. As usual with PPU, its hot stuff, with a soulful, space-themed vocal riding a hard electro groove and slick P Funk guitars. The flipside contains an excellent Dub, too, featuring some half whispered vocals and more space around the essential groove. If you like your cuts far-sighted, soul-flecked and synth heavy, "This World" is a must-buy.

The perfect blend. Speaking of blends, "Coffee Cold" is Hammond-heaved cover of a Galt MacDermot track from the Woman Is Sweet soundtrack. Largely instrumental and full of organ and horn Q&As, it's a spiralling groove session that rolls out in a manner that's like a funk version of Babe Ruth's "The Mexican". "She Ain't Got No Soul", meanwhile, is a full-flavoured vocal original where the band's charismatic singer Roger Fullosoul gets centre stage to lay down some really belly-driven vocals over another tight bed of guitar riffs and even tighter horns. It doesn't feel like there's been three years since the last Smoove & Turrell album, but that's probably because they've come so far since Eccentric Audio was released back in 2011. There are no prizes for guessing that 'Born Slippy' by Keiichi Sokabe and Inokasira Rangers is a cover of Underworld's ubiquitous rave tune 'Born Slippy.' It first landed on Japanese imprint Park Tone in 2017 but demand is such that it no reappears on the Japanese label as a limited edition repress. It's three and a half minutes of squelchy, slow motion, fat bottomed dub with the vocals delivered in drawn out fashion next to languid guitar riffs. This Four Flies Records' "45" boasts two of the most potent recordings from the soundtrack. Records. "Put It On Him" and "Go On & Have Your Fun" featured on one of the 7" singles that the band put out in 1971, and they still sound as fresh and as funky today as they did back then. Most importantly, both tunes have a very definite 'Texan' sound running through them, nodding to a country living that could not be matched by artists from Detroit or Philadelphia. It's their city, their vibe, their sound - and it sounds damn fine.

Funky Soul Brother (part 1)
Funky Soul Brother (part 2)
Review: "Funky Soul Brother" is a rare slab of insane heavy funk from South Carolina's The Soul Drifters! Hailing from the miniscule town of Harleyville, South Carolina, The Soul Drifters cut this super heavy self-penned stormer in 1974. With only a small handful of original copies, "Funky Soul Brother" has been in big demand after an edit of the track appeared on a bootleg a few years ago. Here we are proud to present the full track for your listening and DJing pleasure. It's a driving slice of up-tempo funk with vicious breaks, driving bassline and insane wah wah guitar that will ignite funky dancefloors the world over. This is a top Funk 45 release.

Stay In The Groove (part 2)
Review: German label Tramp go back to some raw and gritty funk for their limited edition (just 275 copies) 7 inch release from the Soul Dynamics. Throbbing bass, an upfront vocal and a tight brass section make this a perfect example of the heavy funk genre.

Supernatural Thing (part 2)
Review: Hailing from Orange County, CA, the Soul Hustlers are a loose conglomerate of musicians born from the remnants of Sounds of Ceviche, the seminal OC-based acid jazz band active in the late nineties. "Supernatural Thing" is an excellent release on All City.

Make It Mellow Parts 1 & 2
Cat: TIMMION 025. Rel: 26 Apr 11
Make It Mellow (part 1)
Make It Mellow (part 2)
Review: The Soul Investigators from Finland are one of the most dynamic, talented and exiting groups to have hit the specialist funk scene in the past decade. Since 2001 the outfit have had releases on their own and been joined by a variety of vocalists including Myron And E, Big Joe Louis and Herb Johnson. On this new dinked 45 from Timmion the band get together for what sounds like an instrumental alternative rendition of the funk classic ''Tighten Up'', and trust us when we say that there's nothing 'Make it Mellow' about it! Throbbing bass pulsates through the track whilst fatback drums with great brass stabs work their magic. Part 2 is more of the same but with separate trumpet and bubblin' organ solos.

Make It Mellow (part 1)
Make It Mellow (part 2)
Review: This is basically a monster version of 'Tighten Up' that you will have seen the band perform if you've attended any of the Nicole Willis live shows. As you'd expect it is tighter than the proverbial nats chuff with blazing uptempo bass and drum groove, kicking horn section and open drum breaks kicking off part 2.

Vulture's Prayer

Vulture's Prayer (with Jimi Tenor - instrumental) (4:15)
Bad Viberations (with Jimi Tenor - instrumental) (4:17)
Review: Taking time out from Nicole Willis's strict schedule, Finland's most famous funk troupe The Soul Investigators hook up with flautist Jimi Tenor for two soulful, imagination-grabbing instrumentals. "Vulture's Prayer" is a softer, more languishing, reflective piece where the wah wah guitars shimmer and ripple underneath a thoughtful - but never overcooked - flute line. Hungry for more bite? Flip for "Bad Vibrations". A deep funk cut with a rhythm that's built up around a crisply plucked guitar line allowing Jimi to blow his thing as wildly as he likes.

Movin' & Groovin' (part 2)
Review: The second release from Timmion offshoot Mit Wit comes from Soul La Das, who have been playing for many years - and composed many songs - but this is their first commercial dinked 45 release. "Movin' & Groovin" Parts 1 & 2 boast a smouldering Hammond organ offset by southern styled guitar, the result being a meaningful and thoughtful funk instrumental. This one needs a couple of listens to hook you in, but rest assured this release is brimming with raw quality.

Ashley's Roachclip
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has very light surface marks/smudges, but otherwise in perfect working condition***

More must-have reissue action here, as Soul Brother Records offers-up an ultra-limited, Juno exclusive white vinyl "45" featuring two revered gems from Washington D.C funk heavyweights The Soul Searchers. On the A-side you'll find "Blow Your Whistle", a deliciously weighty, energetic and infectious funk stomper laden with wah-wah guitars, punchy horns, bustling grooves and, as you'd expect from the title, whistles. Over on the B-side you'll find "Ashley's Roachclip", a more laidback chunk of breezy instrumental soul goodness from 1974 whose headline-grabbing attraction is a seriously good - and extensive - flute solo.

Disco/Boogie Edits Vol 1
Cat: SS 001. Rel: 12 Oct 06
Northend - "Tee's Happy"
Prince - "Sexy Dancer"
Review: New re-edit series on the US Soul Selector label, that sees legendary house producers diggin thru the crates, adding new life to some disco classics. First up we have Northend's "Tee's Happy" originally released on Emergency in 1981. This Paradise Garage favourite and electronic, disco gem, produced by Arthur Baker and mixed by Tee Scott, gets cut up, extended and teased in an old skool remix style for maximum pressure on the floor. Next up is the disco funk bomb that is Prince's "Sexy Dancer", released on Warner US in 1979, cut up and re-arranged to give another dancefloor bomb. Good start to the series with these two disco/boogie gems.

Runnin Out
Hot Pants
Review: German funk collective let loose on Kat with two stunning authentic jams. "Runnin Out" is a slow and steady stomper with big horn harmonies and great backing on the chorus that's not dissimilar to Alice Russell's early material. As the title suggests "Heartbreak" comes with a tad more romance and just a touch of the Springfields. Swinging on more of a breakbeat rhythm the groove mutates from soulful in the verses to full-on funky on the chorus.
