A New Day (Is Here At Last)
Cat: OG 041. Rel: 23 Nov 22
JC Davis - "A New Day (Is Here At Last)" (3:10)
Hell Razah - "Project Jazz" (feat Talib Kweli & MF Doom) (3:47)
Review: The Originals label always does a grand job of pairing the sweetest source material with its famous sampling counterpart, and most importantly they put the originators up front on the A side. This time around they're celebrating the ascendant jazz funk masterpiece 'A New Day (Is Here At Least)' by legendary saxophonist JC Davis, originally released in 1969 and sounding fresh to this day. On the flip comes an open-hearted approach to the iconic brass licks courtesy of Hell Razah, with none other than Talib Kweli and MF Doom in full flow over the top for the impeccable 'Project Jazz' from 2007. Two absolutely golden sides on a perfect little 45, what's not to love?

Dr Octagon - "Bear Witness" (3:29)
Handsome Boy Modelling School - "Holy Calamity" (4:02)
Review: Handsome Boy Modeling School is an American duo made up of hip-hop beatmakers Dan the Automator of Gorillaz association and rince Paul from projects with Stetsasonic, De La Soul and Gravediggaz. Dan the Automator assumes his DJ Octagon Palais for the opera here - a hard hitting and deep cut rap with plenty of manic DJ scratching and big stabs. Handsome Boy Modelling School then link up for the flip side 'Holy Calamity' which is another floor filler with bold brass and mad scratching. Both tunes hark back to a golden era of rap and will get any floor pumping.

We Party (2:42)
Let's Party (3:06)
Review: The Half-Truths come on strong here with a deep funk banger on tidy 45rpm. This is full throttle funk music with everything tune dup to 1. The drums race along at high speed, the sax leads are floored and expressive and the vocals yelp out of the mix to add fuel to the fire. That's the case on 'We Party', at least, but it is 'Let's Party' on the flip that then goes slower, with more room for the gorgeous keys to shine and some cosmic synth work to bust out. Potent stuff.

Music Makes The World Go 'Round (4:13)
Music Makes The World Go 'Round (instrumental) (3:23)
Review: Numero's Hottest Sounds Around series has excelled at unveiling a treasure trove of late-70s Caribbean grooves. Now they look to Trinidad where Stan Chaman's Semp label originally presented the Hamilton Brothers' calypso-disco hit 'Music Makes The World Go 'Round' back in 1978. It is a vibrant sound with multi-layered grooves, plenty of inescapable summer vibes and a tropical edge that cannot fail to bring the good times to any session. On the flip is an instrumental that pairs things back to the bubbly rhythms. What's more, it comes on lovely pink vinyl.

I Love Without A Love (2:15)
Review: Jo Ann Hamilton hailed from Georgia and was brought up on a diet of soul, Motown and r&b. At the tender age of seven she joined the Gospel Choir from the Melton Chappel church and then got into the disco scene. Five decades later she has linked with Kevin Fingier in Buenos Aires, Argentina for this fantastic new 7" that is imbued with classic funk, soul and swing. Opener 'September' is a massive Northern Soul gem that would have slayed back then and still does now. On the flip is the more obscure 'I love Without A Love' which is funky, tropical and infectious.

It's Just Begun (Hansi remix) (4:22)
Jungle Groove (Lego re-edit) (5:27)
Review: The Italian disco dons at Legofunk have another couple of belters for us here. As usual, both sides of this 7" feature an edit. The first is by Hansi who flips the well known 'It's Just Begun' into a driving and funky rhythm with rolling bass. It's a chunky one that never lets up. On the reverse, 'Jungle Groove' gets a re-edit from the in house Lego team and it becomes a loopy affair that teases the drop for ages. When it comes, big chords and raw, yelping vocals add extra fuel to the fire. Both are highly impactful.

Lego Edit - "Baci Baci" (Lego ReFunk) (4:56)
Review: Following up some great edits by the likes of Delay Lama, Atoz and Wandervogel, the Lego Edit 7" limited series returns with one shot per side here, each offering a beautifully arranged, string heavy backdrop of low slung funk. On the A side, Hansi respectfully resplices a bumpin' and super soulful underground goodie on "Party Is A Gruv", while over on the flip you've got a timeless R&B anthem that's paired perfectly with a love of the wacky backy on "Baci Baci" (Lego ReFunk) by the boss man himself Lego Edit.

Idle Hands (3:48)
Seeds Of Life (feat Eddie Palmeri) (5:09)
Review: Legendary bandleader Eddie Palmieri took a rare groove excursion from his Latin legacy in the early 70s for two albums as Harlem River Drive. Criminally overlooked, Soul Brother have dusted off two of the many highlights from his self-titled debut; "Idle Hands" is a sleazy, Gaye-style message with an almost spoken word quality to the vocals and a smoky wooziness to the horns while "Seeds Of Life" is a real end-of-set belter that rises and rises with tight orchestration between the guitar, horns and drums. Incredible... This can't be slept on this time round.

Harmony Cats' Theme (3:25)
Review: There have now been almost 100 hundred entries on Mr Bongo's Brazil 45 series and as far as we can tell not one of them has been a dud. This time they opt for a big and airy soul sound from The Harmony Cats. They were an all female vocal quintet that hailed from Sao Paulo and banded together in 1976. Most prolific in the disco days, the b-side here is their best known tune outside of Brazil. It's got a cosmic breakbeat and light vocals that soar to the skies. A-side 'Seja Como Nos (De Pe No Chao)' is a just as sweet sound that transports you to Latin America in an instant.

Review: The Brazil45 series has always been pure gold and now come a pair f beauties from Harmony Cats, a vocal quintet-turned-trio from Sao Paulo known for their disco-era hits. Harmony Cats' 'Theme' from 1976 is their most recognised track outside Brazil and is inspired by Rhythm Heritage's Barretta's Theme with its spacey breakbeats, lush vocals and percussive flair, all of which have made it a true crossover classic. On the B-side, 'Seja Como Nos (De Pe No Chao)' delivers an exuberant Brazilian twist on The Jacksons' 'Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)'- it's a guaranteed floor-filler with radiant disco energy and Harmony Cats' signature vocal style.

Review: Athens Of The North celebrate the longstanding contributions of host, presenter, writer, personality and occasional singer Bernard "Spider" Harrison. Recorded sometime around 1970, and fetching large triple figures between collectors, the feel good bluesy soul cut "Beautiful Day" first landed on Lulu Records and has barely seen the light of day since... Review: BGP are having a busy month with a number of unmissable funk 7"s all getting served up. This one comes from Fuzzy Haskins, who was an original member of Parliament and Funkadelic and so brings oodles of p-funk goodness. It is the much-sampled 'The Fuz & Da Boog' on the a-side, with its soaring trumpets and twisted, convoluted rhythms turning you inside out. The b-side is the alternative version of Cookie Jar which is a swooning, bring laced slow motion seducer for late night lovers. Both of these are red hot, for different reasons.

Little Sister (part 1) (3:02)
Little Sister (part 2 - instrumental) (2:58)
Review: Some sizzling deep funk business here from TRAMP Records, as the venerable German reissue imprint offers a fresh pressing of an obscure 1975 single from Walt Maddox's Super M label. It was Maddox who produced "Little Sister", though little is known about the band that recorded it. The A-side "Part 1" vocal version is superb. It features addictive group vocals, prominent flute solos and the kind of wah-wah-heavy, flash-fried deep funk grooves that were all the rage at the time. The flipside "Part 2 (Instrumental)" mix strips away the lead vocal, emphasizes the groove further and gives greater prominence to the flute and organ parts. It's great, too, though we still prefer the A-side.

Fade Away (3:12)
Review: Discos Martos is a new division of Rocafort Records. The imprint takes its bow here with a cultured single from soul singer Glen Anthony Henry who is originally from Los Angeles but now based in Spain. His vibe is to blend the best bits from classic soul with a modern edge that hits different. The A-side, 'Thankful,' is an upbeat tribute to love and friendship featuring a catchy hook and an Al Green-style drum groove. The B-side, 'Fade Away', highlights Henry's falsetto in a deep, introspective ballad. Both tracks are produced by Oscar Martos using full analogue recording so they capture the warmth of 70s soul and make for an exciting start for Discos Martos.

Review: Prime Source is a Canada-based label that has previously been digital-only. Now it kicks off a vinyl schedule with a real doozy. Modern funk producer Hidden Groove's 'Heatin' Up' is a delicious slice of boogie-fide disco. It is only his third release after Do You Wanna Groove in 2017 and Funkin All The Time in 2018. But it might be his best yet: a-side opener 'Heatin' Up' is all plunging bass and dazzling chords, crisp disco claps and sultry soul vibes. On the flipside is 'Breakers Groove.' Review: Another 5 Boroughs Breaks release means another gold standard hip-hop banger. This one is from
The High & Mighty duo who hailed from Phillie and were active in the nineties. Their 'Dirty Decibels' is a sleazy joint with prying bass and sliding drums that get under your skin. Review: It's been a weird summer for sure in 2020, but you can improve yours by a guaranteed 100% with the addition of this hard to fine and often expensive 1980 great. High Frequency was a disco offshoot of Aleem, a boogie-funk, r&b and dance music trio formed in New York City. "Summertime" is the sort of bristling and infectious disco cut even the stony hearted can enjoy. The funky bassline, the feel good vocals, the lush chords - it's a real pearl of a track. Review: Legendary Harlem label Queen Constance brought the world the most raw and authentic disco direct from the source. Years later, collectors and dancers alike still fawn over plenty of its output and now two of its more notorious tracks get on-point edits by contemporary stars Kon and Moplen. With Kon at the buttons, High Voltage's "Rock Spank Freak" is tweaked and coerced, with extended funk breakdowns and heavier bottom ends. Unwind Yourself (3:42)
Review: Since 2003, Record Kicks has been the "explosive sound of today's scene" and, by the looks of this latest nugget from Martha High, they're right on track to fulfill that promise! The talented US vocalist was on the front row of James Brown's hits in the 60's and 70's, but she's since then focused on her own glorious soul material. "A Little Taste Of Soul" comes as a ray of shining light on a wet October afternoon, full of funky sensibility and heartfelt vibes, making for the perfect dance number for those looking for that groovy thang. For the B-side, "Unwind Yourself" slows the tempo down, breaks up the groove, and unleashes High's Goddess-like voice amid those tasty breaks - what a winner!

Review: Long standing soul man Willie (or Hill as he usually operates on PPU) returns with three more timeless soul joints. "Eternal Love" is a soul monolith of Vandross proportions as Willie belts his guts up over a slippery synth boogie groove, classic 80s falsetto harmonies and brick-melting synth-toms. "Talking On A Funky Note" takes us to the early 90s with a Bobby Brown-style new-jack sound while "Over The Hump" brings us to an inspiring climax with lyrics of intestinal fortitude so heavy they'd make a world champion life coach blush. Boasting over eight band members, HHBC have also enlisted the special trumpet chops of local Italian jazz great Tito Bonacera, as well as the production talent of one HOSS$ Benitez, to produce two slow-sauntering, fat, swelling brass clangers. Review: The story to this one goes like this: a number of years ago, the Resense label boss Oonops was DJing with legendary digger Nightmares on Wax. He dropped the original of this tune and the dancers went wild. A few years later and Oonops found the original, as well s the man who made it, and asked for a new and exclusive 45-edit. Either way, the tune was first put out in 1969 and is all about war veterans returning home from Vietnam only to find out their lady hadn't waited for them. Those Guys From Athens - "4 Your Love" (4:34)
Review: If warming, glassy-eyed midtempo disco niceness is your thing, we'd heartily recommend this languid, sun-drenched edits offering from the Too Slow To Disco camp. It's packed to the rafters with toasty, afternoon-ready fare that's arguably best listened to while decked out in boat shoes, pastel-coloured shorts and a stripy t-shirt. HOLDTight steps up first with the head-nodding, saucer-eyed shuffle of future yacht disco classic 'Be My Love 2Nite', before Delfonic offers up a fine rearrangement of an obscure, breathy and seductive disco gem full of prominent Moog synth sounds, jaunty pianos and whispered vocals. 'Jorge's Pipa' by Jack Tennis is a fine, floor-friendly tweak of a disco-era Brazilian gem, while Those Guys From Athens' '4 Your Love' is a seductive disco slow jam straight from the top shelf.

Review: Initially released in very limited quantities way back in 1983 via private press imprint Break-A-Way Records, Rex Hush's sole single 'Pull Over' has long been unknown to all but a handful of dedicated, dusty-fingered collectors. Happily, Izipho Soul managed to track down Hush and arranged a licensed reissue. 'Pull Over' is simply superb: a classic, boogie-era fusion of contemporaneous electronic funk and cosmic soul rich in spacey, liquid bass guitar, flash-fried guitar licks and jaunty piano lines, all topped off by a fine lead vocal from Hush. This time round, the song comes backed by a previously unreleased cut recorded during the same sessions: the sweet, piano-laden ballad 'Summer Breeze'. It's good, though it's the dynamite A-side that you really need in your life

Rock With U/El Mensaje

Mike The Glove - "Rock With U" (3:50)
Hielo Ardiente - "El Mensaje" (3:56)
Review: This tasty 7" first saw the light of day back in 2013, and has been an in-demand, hard-to-find item ever since. The demand can be partly be attributed to Mike The Glove's A-side version of MJ classic "Rock With You", which expertly combines the King of Pop's original vocal with an irie, decidedly dusty reggae backing track. By the standards of these kinds of mash-ups, it's immaculately produced and almost sounds like an original production. Tucked away on the flip you'll find obscure El Salvadorian funk band Hielo Ardiente's brilliant 1974 cover of Cymade's "The Message". Boasting some killer organ solos and vocals delivered in Spanish, rather than English, it offers a brilliant spin on a stone cold classic.

Headhunters - "God Made Me Funky" (Opolopo Tweak) (6:12)
Sylvia St James - "Motherland" (Opolopo Tweak) (6:24)
Review: The good folks at Gamm pop up with another of their irresistible slices of feel good funk. This one takes what some people would say is one of the most significant rare groove tracks ever in Headhunter's 'God Make Me Funky' and get Opolopo to tweak it with his usual sense of elan. The results are deadly, full of funky bass and sample course you will well recognise. On the B-side Opolopo draws out the grooves and goes for a soulful house roller that reworks Sylvia St. James's downtempo groover 'Motherland' to perfection.

Kareem Ali - "Black Futures" (5:52)
Review: Rhythm Section International's bumper Shouts 2021 sampler has been split into two and spread of a pair of vital 12"s. This is the swooned half and it is just a good as the first with our favourite being from the hugely prolific and mega-on form breakout artist of the year, Kareem Ali. His 'Black Futures' is a steamy, surging house track with kicking kicks and astral synths that speak to the soul. Hassan Abou Alam's 'Hella Mega Drive' spins hi hats, drums and bass into a tightly woven groove of no fixed genre and the swing in Pookie's 'Beast Mode' is simply irresistible. Big ups one and all.

Review: Harold Orozco Rengifo was a driving force in the new wave of beat-driven rock and funk that swept through Colombia in the late 60s and early 70s, which took some influence from US and British rock and gave it an unmistakable injection of Latin flair. One of his most treasured projects is Harold Y Su Banda, responsible for one sole record of funky perfection in 1975. Evolucion is a digger's delight, featuring the kind of universal but also incredibly geo-specific grooves that add so much depth and breadth to a set. There's a good reason why this is considered one of the best records of the 1970s.

Review: The Hi Fly Orchestra means all-acoustic jazz with a totally infectious and heavy dance groove that always gets the crowd on the floor. The group has an ear for the great sound of 60's jazz, Latin and samba. There's a good variety of styles on the album. It's a melting pot of funky Latin tunes, driving basslines, original compositions with a strong Brazilian touch, pulsating beats and percussion breaks reminiscent of 60's and 70's sounds that Tarantino would have used for the "Jackie Brown" soundtrack, if it had only been recorded back then. There's even an unusual cover of "Soul Bossa Nova", the Quincy Jones classic.
