Benga & Walsh - "Military"
Walsh & Kromestar - "Panik Room"
Review: Two big collaborations featuring Croydon's latest rising dubstep star, Walsh. On "Military" he teams up with one of the godfathers of the scene, Benga, whose releases on Big Apple are legendary. This has been one of the biggest tunes of the last few months, and on first listen it's easy to see why! Kromestar is another relative newcomer who made big waves with his debut release "Kalawanji". This one mixes digidub and 4/4 in a killer groove.

Don't Speak (3:01)
Review: The dream team of East Man and Walton are back together for another collaborative single on Hi Tek. Things kick off with the tough as teak 'Screw Face', which does just what it says on the tin. It's a square wave banger with a big bad bass that cannot fail to make you jump. Flip it over for something more hard and steppy despite the fact it moves as a slow and icy pace. 'Don't Speak' layers off kilter percussion and booming sub bass that makes for a meditative sound that will get all the head nodders lost in their own world right by the speaker stacks.

Review: Fire in the VIP hole! For their latest vinyl outing Fat Kid On Fire take an interesting approach and ask artists to return to previous tunes on the label and give them a VIP booster. The result are four favourites all given special new twists as Ourman, Roklem, Substrada and WZ all go in on their own work. Highlights include a whole new level of aggy mysticism on 'Calibre VIP' and the percussive new twist on 'Nirdsong VIP' but the whole EP absolutely sizzles with freshness.

Review: The dubstep virus spreads some more, as Yorkshire based Senseless enlist well respected basement diva Warrior Queen to ride on top of two wicked Sarantis riddims. Weapons grade dancehall. No surprise then that Sarantis has apparently supplied half of the beats for the forthcoming Warrior Queen album. "Buffalo Gal Dub" rides a steady skank with a ruling bass assault while "Brother Kitano" arrives to seal the deal beyond any shred of debate - pure dirt on wax.

Review: "Empiyah", from Wadadda, is the most upfront dubstep tune to date from Berlin's MG77 imprint. On the flip is "Founder". This employs a bassline that's wobbly and fluid. Meanwhile "Phob" seems to siphon out some dub elements for a more broken steppers feel - this is the right kind of darkside tune for the summer.

Reckless (5:08)
Review: Wall In The Hole kicks off life with a first EP from an unbeknown producer of the same name. The label will be tapping into what some (us) are calling the great dubstep revival with a super minted, one time only pressing of two brilliantly juicy tunes. 'Monia' has bright synths and warm chords over nimble drums and bass that convey real weight, all topped off by a superb r&b vocal sample from the golden era. 'Reckless' on the flip is another one defined by its magnificent vocals sample, but this one has more broken beats and lively bass swings, low end wobble and wooden percussion.

Review: Mancunian Walton heads to Munich label Ilian Tape for anther of his cutting edge EPs. No stranger to esteemed labels like Hyperdub and Techtonic, this soundsmith once again draws on ambient, techno, bass and IDM across six immersive and cinematic tracks. The first two are largely wide open, cavernous, ambient affairs in which to allow your mind to wander. The inventive rhythms and powerful drums then arrive on 'Dread II' and remain throughout the skittish synth energy of 'Rewind Riddim' and automated factory floor sounds of 'Overload Destruction.' 'Unknown Territories' ends on a more far gazing vibe with pensive pads over scattered kicks.

Review: "Window Smasher", the lead track from this Warlock release, takes on the essence of late nineties drum & bass in the vein of DJ Die/Krust and reworks it into a break-step mover. Chopped and filtered breaks combine with a bassline of speaker shaking proportions while an array of sci-fi synths and ghostly FX complete this very full picture. Review: New killer dancehall bomb from Warrior Queen on Soul Jazz Records! Warrior Queen is one of the most in-demand vocalists on the dubstep,
dancehall and grime scenes at present. She has released records with Skream, The Bug, Kode9, DJ Zinc and many more (on labels such as
Rephlex, Soul Jazz, Hyperdub, Tempa, Casual and more). Warrior Queen began her career in Jamaica, MCing on her uncle's soundsystem in
Kingston and quickly elevated to releasing dancehall tracks on the Penthouse label. Since first releasing records in the UK she has worked
with some of the finest underground producers in the country. Her previous release on Soul Jazz Records was as Ladybug (with Kevin Martin,
AKA The Bug) with 'Them A Bomb We', about the 7th of July Tube bombings. This new track 'Things Change' is about the politics of life
between Jamaica and the UK. Heatwave's original productions and re-mixes have previously been released on their own Scandal Bag,
Punchline and Heatwave labels including their infamous DJ-friendly dancehall versions of Kelis's 'Trick Me' and Lily Allen's 'LDN'. Warrior
Queen's 'Thing Change' is taken from the forthcoming 'An England Story', a history of UK MC culture featuring an incredible array of dancehall
/hip-hop/grime MCs from the last 25 years, with artists such as Roots Manuva, General Levy, Estelle, London Posse, Stush, Tippa Irie, Warrior
Queen and many, many more.

Shed's brilliantly visceral Wax series gets two heads down, bass up remixes from Pinch and Elemental. Tectonic Recordings boss Pinch turns in a typically moody revision of the original which chops up the rolling 4/4 of the original and utilises hollow percussion and occasional horror piano stabs, while North London based producer Elemental incorporates some brilliant synth work over on the flip.

Review: Currently spotted across the country with the Hit & Run crew, tremors from Wayfarer's seismic bass can be felt right across the bass scene. Take one listen to these distinctive blends and you'll understand why. "Afterlight" is a sludgy, slo-mo weave of chubby percussion and deep throat bass gurgles, "Azuma" is a much more stark rhythm homage with epic space between each sparse, icy element while "Zeg" completes the show with awesome staccato tribal drum drama and a tight, insistent rhythm riff. Review: Wen comes correct with another generous excursion that sits somewhere between EP and album for Parris DJ's Soundman Chronicles label. Potentially one of his widest visions to date, just within the first two tracks we go from the deep breathing machines and sci-fi dreams of "Arlington CT9" to pretty pounding club music on the MC-sampling, tribal-minded "Pace Myself". Elsewhere our heartstrings are ruffled by the gritty tonal processes and spaced-out beats of "She Giv", plunged deep into sub-soaked future techno on "Lunar Tide Cycle" and driven into a physical frenzy with the drum-focused, post UK funky jam "Switch" before being left in some filthy bass-sprayed gutter craving more on "Gravity Flux".

Review: With Wen and Parris offering a consummate showcase of their studio chemistry on "Time" from the former's Keysound LP Signals, a further chance to indulge in their collaborative approach is presented via this full single for Tempa. The results are two crystalline deep dubstep pieces that ooze space and soul. "Caught" fluctuates with funk thanks to the clever use of a small vocal sample and a slim line breakbeat. "Collide", meanwhile, pumps a heavier rhythmic message while being smothered in pressurised pads and coated with a subtle but effective female vocal. Both are stunning. Don't get caught out.

"Play Your Corner", the Riko Dan featuring closer to Wen's 2014 debut LP Signals, gets a 2015 reboot courtesy of Walton and Kahn & Neek. Given the iconic delivery of the "original Don Dada" Riko Dan, it's no surprise his vocals remain very much a central part of both remixes here with Hyperdub associate Walton opting for a sub heavy version with some neat, twinkling grime strings making their presence felt midway through. Offering a nice contrast, Kahn & Neek veer into more unpredictable territory with a remix filled with all manner of intriguing sonic detail that still bangs hard.

Review: Ox Rider Records follow up the success of their first two releases with another scorching double a-side from label boss, DJ and producer Whistla. "Merkaba" sees Whistla launching a swing offensive on a dubstep scene crowded by too much bland wobble-bass and not enough ideas. It's summer dammit, and the people want to dance. "Merkaba" takes us on a trippy journey through the heady days of garage. Finally unleashing their debut 10", the justified hype is evident through every sonic element... Authentic dub delivered with contemporary dynamics, it's an essential addition to all bass fans' collections. "Lazy Dub" is a lolloping, rolling bounce track that bubbles with a bulbous bassline, reverbed rim-shots and soft echoing skanks. "Anxious Dub" is a just a little sharper on its toes as the bassline takes a backseat and allows the minor keys and melodica to push their message home. A genuinely ace debut release, you won't be asking who WhoDem are for very long.

He takes cues from wobbling low ends and more relaxed dub, menacing bass throbs and pressurised percussion and always spits out his own unique sounding and essential cuts. And here are four more, with 'Triton' lurching on vast kicks and twisted basslines, 'Listen To The Sound' bringing some warrior horns as well as LFO madness and 'Remember When' popping off with tinny cowbells up high and watery bass oceans way down low. Still sounding relevant, still sucking us into their heady, weighty, eastern brew, each cut still hits hard... Review: As the artist alias suggests, Widow is a master of the uneasy, the unsettling and the unnerving. Here he makes a splash once more with a sophomore EP on Deep, Dark & Dangerous. Opener 'War' features Logan as well as plenty of bass weight and hits that echo off into the darkness next to the precise bars. 'Deadman Tales' is another eerie late night stroll through a deserted cemetery at Halloween and then it's a Widow remix of 'Startfire Muse - Shadow Bonnie Lullaby' that builds the pressure and releases it in emphatic fashion. Review: Even by the high standards of atmosphere-obsessed leftfield heads, this 12" from new producer Wife is impressively atmospheric. Built around clicking rhythms and barely audible vocals, with all manner of drunken chords and stoned effects laden atop, it's presented as two sides of continuous music. While that evokes memories of rather too indulgent ambient releases of the past, there's little pretentious or self-serving about Stoic. There are moments of genuine beauty, and a poignancy - particularly to the semi-organic vocal cut "Circles" - that's hard to ignore. Even "Shards", the release's most ambient moment, is a thing of untold beauty.

Luc Marianni - "Six Synthetic Suites" (Nukubus remix)
Review: New Parisian label Dernier Des Disquaires launches in style with the first edition of a series of EPs that aim to "bridge the gap between French underground culture and relevant contemporary dancefloors", with reworkings of reclusive 1980s composer Luc Marianni from contributors based in Detroit, Glasgow and Rotterdam. 7777 and Skudge regular Jared Wilson opens proceedings on Le Rire EP with the thrilling "Fr. Face (Half And Half Mix)", a rhythmically shifting production that starts on a dubstep slant before mutating into deviant acid techno blessed with juke leaning intentions. This couldn't be any further removed from "Oranges & Lemons", a gauzy blend of head nod beat dynamism, slick edits and woozified industrial textures from Dam Mantle that pays homage to Marianni's "Voyage vers l'Harmonie". Perhaps best of the lot is the 11 minute Nukubus remix of "Six Synthetic Suites" that sounds like the cosmiche tropes of Neu! being dragged down the rabbit hole of industrial techno.

Review: Bottoms up! Nottingham MC / Gary Barlow lookalike Window Kid promises us a raucous night with 'Boozy'. Laying down the trappings of a messy sesh over a bumping bass house beat, Window gets real with staccato lists over the rising chords. Need something a little heavier? Daseplate and Joedan's swaggering dubstep remix will put hairs on your chest. See you by the fruity.

Undertaker
Best Foot Forward (feat Nio)
Review: Wonder drops a taster from his hotly anticipated forthcoming debut album on Dump Valve. 'Chi Flute' is a moody roller which has been going down a storm at FWD>>, Rinse FM favourite 'Undertaker' fuses catchy 80s metal riffs with a cavernous bassline, whilst Wonder's classic 'Face' rhythm is revisited here with a soulful vocal courtesy of Nio.

Wonder - "What"
Wizzbit - "Jam Hot"
Review: The Rinse 20th Anniversary celebrations continue apace here with the eighth in a series of nine limited, hand numbered 12"s throwing the focus on DJ Target's Dump Valve Recordings. Set up by the Pay As You Go Cartel selector in 2001, Dump Valve lived up to its billing as a platform for experimental grime from his contemporaries, issuing cuts from Geenus, Danny Weed, J da Flex and Wiley in it's life cycle. This 12" draws for two certified classics in the swaggering alien stance of "What" by Wonder and "Jam Hot", one of numerous bangers made by Geenus under his Wizzbit alias.
