Wosto/Kilian Krings Edits EP
Cat: SBZ 002. Rel: 29 Sep 16

New Asia - "Chant For Running" (Wosto edit) (4:11)
L'Eponge Synthetique - "Collection D'Ombres Subtiles" (Kilian Krings edit) (4:52)
Review: For German retroverts Sign Bit Zero, it's "all about the expression of hate, despair, pain, waste, destruction, tristesse and misanthropic in art and music!" and that's good enough for us, really! On offer here are five noisy reinterpretations of some serious industrial unclassics. Hamburg's Wosto (of Fallbeil) takes the razor to UK pioneers Nocturnal Emissions and the raw tonal energy of "Bite Them Back". Label boss Kilian Krings appears also, delivering an edit of vintage EBM classic "Nervous Breakdown" by Suicide Commando and also for short lived Dutch trio S.M. Nurse and their grinding minimal synth anthem "Heinwerker". Some great edits on here for the new industrialists.

Review: Aussie larrikin DJ WHPRSNPR is back on his very own Nerang Recordings with a motley crew of upstarts on this one. Fittingly titled Freaky Friends 2, it features DJ Swagger with some off-kilter UK bass on 'Hotice Water' and Low Tape with the NSFW booty bass of 'So Delicious' on the A side, followed over on the flip by Ole Mic Odd's sci-fi electro funk jam 'In The House' and Berlin's Nasty King Krule doing his best Dopplereffekt impression on 'Stop Talkin Boy' among others.

Review: After coming up while working in the Rush Hour record store in Amsterdam, Interstellar Funk has now branched out and established his own sound and his own label. And that is Artificial Dance, where he hooks up with Loradeniz for this interesting take on cold wave and synth. The tracks are underpinned by contemporary bass and deep groves which makes them perfect for club play but not at the expense of the melodies. They are curious, crystalline, freeform and mystic and help make this a handy record that brings something different - not least the new age ambiance of 'Situational Lullaby'.

Review: Brazilian tech house up and comer L_cio, known to his Mum as Laercio Schwantes Iorio finally gets his day on wax with this new one on the DOC label. On the A-side is "People Talk" with pop induced tech house reminiscent of the Kompakt style, moody as hell and big on atmosphere with uber cool male vocals courtesy of Japan based Brit Aroop Roy. On the flip is the accapella but it's more of a beatless version, keeping the druggy mesmerising melody and said uber cool vocals by Roy. A fine little 7" nugget from DOC.

Review: Laibach's new EP is made up of "unpublished tracks from the repertoire of the band's 2015 performances in North Korea". "Honourable, Dead Or Alive, "When Following The Revolutionary Road" are based on an aria from a North Korean opera written and produced under the watchful eye of Kim Jong Il, but Laibach's interpretation was deemed too complicated hence stricken from their show. It's presented here, however, with two takes on North Korean pop hit "We Will Go to Mount Paektu" along with folk song "Arirang" to make for a wonderfully exotic release.

Review: Ever-changing Slovenian collective Laibach seems to have mellowed with age, with the band's inherent desire to court controversy (see their 2015 performances in North Korea for a relatively recently example) currently curtailed. Love Is Still Alive, which marks their first new music since the release of last year's well-received album Wir Sind das Volk, is actually an "extension" of the music they wrote to soundtrack the 2019 film 'Iron Sky -The Coming Race'. It is, they say, a "trip through space music genres of recent decades" (albeit with bonus nods to country, pop and so on) that loosely tells the story of a spaceship full of post-apocalyptic survivors making their way across the solar system. It's a lot of fun, all told, with the band expertly showcasing the breadth of their musical knowledge as well as skip-fulls of imagination.

Review: After his recent Cassettes reissue for France's impressive Serendip Lab stable, '80s electronic wizard Philippe Laurent resurfaces with new and exciting material on Peripheral Minimal, a young and vibrant imprint dealing in outsider electronics. Being a man of the arts, both physical and musical, Laurent's new music is full of movement and geometry, but unlike his older material, "Mithra (v1)" leans more towards contemporary techno terrains, boasting a straight techno kick surrounded by wonky flurries of melodies. The same goes for "La Tentation De Saint Antonie", a club-filtered synth pop monster, along with the more anthemic "Mithra (v2)". The second version of "La Tentation" enters a Kraftwerk-like world where robotic voices mould with fluid sonics and an electro groove. Impressive.

Similar Familiar (Benedikt remix) (6:09)
Review: Lea Porcelain, the new wave retroverts from Frankfurt am Main could very well be the next big thing that you've never heard of. The original version of "Loose Life" itself is quite difficult to locate on the interwebs but we're sure it's hard to compete with local legend Roman Flugel's slow burning remix on offer here. Darmstadt's finest Benedikt Frey is onboard too, giving "Similar Familiar" a makeover that's as unique as pretty much all his other work: part techno, part cosmic or even industrial. It's brooding, wall of sound guitars and vocals drowned in reverb battle it out against pounding 909 snare attacks and screeching synth leads. Awesome!

Kyiv (4:23)
Review: While in 2024 we're supposed to understand, acknowledge, hear and appropriately respond to the trials and tribulations playing out in minds across the world, in many ways driven by global events and the status quo system we have rather foolishly settled on, for the time being, Lebanon Hangover's hiatus-ending two-tracker - their first studio work since 2020 - opens with a clear message. "Life is full of wonder, it's better than going under." Perhaps not the most sensitive way of telling us to appreciate our lot, the track itself, which nods to Head On The Door-era Cure, is all melancholic chords and a feeling of dizzying, perhaps even manic despair alongside the comfort that comes with recognising the universal human condition. It's a joyful but slightly sinister lead. Flip it to find 'KYIV', an acoustic-ambient-Cocteau Twins-esque tribute to the sorrow and pain of Ukraine, and, by association, other war torn regions of the world.

Robot Is Systematic
Review: Authentic Italo business straight from 1982... "The Garden" and "Robot Is Systematic" were the only two productions Franco Rago, Gianluigi Farina and Xenia Monneret made as Lectric Workers. Which is a real shame; both these cuts still strut with distinction and leave you screaming for more. "Robot Is Systematic" was issued as one of the very first releases on Viewlexx back in 2000, so it's nice to see it here backing up "The Garden". The music of Lectric Workers is riddled with angular quirky funkiness and an infectious sing-along hookiness, and their fusion of Italian post disco showmanship and British lyrical dexterity commands the ultimate salute now, just as it did 32 years ago.

Review: Polytechnic Youth has been on something of a release spree of late. This absorbing single from the previously low-key Adam Leonard is apparently one of three seven-inch singles the label is releasing simultaneously. Split into two equally otherworldly parts, "Entkommen" is a meditative Berlin-School composition built around spacey, elongated modular pulses, fuzzy 1970s synthesizer chords, sci-fi effects and languid, rippling organ melodies that slowly rise and fall throughout. It's undeniably "kosmiche" in nature, recalling in parts very early Tangerine Dream, Dieter Moebius and Conrad Schnitzler. It's drowsy, alien and hugely atmospheric, suggesting that Adam Leonard is not only a student of those landmark German artists, but also a very capable musician.

Review: Here's one for Euro disco freaks to get in a lather about. Nathalie Letertre's 'Reveur' is a little slice of magic from 1986 which has serious holy grail status, and for good reason. It's got a bucketload of mystery, coming on like spooky dream pop as much as chirpy France party fuel from the hairspray era, and it's never been repressed before now. Forest Jams are doing the good deed and getting it back out there, with the original and the B side cosying up on the A side for an extended fantasy. Rounding out the experience for the new generation, Danish italo devotee Flemming Dalum gets into the throbbing arpeggio on his remix before the spaced out Spaziale edit rounds the record out.

Review: An appropriate name for things to say the least, nine tracks of ambient drone business are offered on this collection, and they all somehow manage to straddle both eeriness and ethereality. There has scarcely been more proof of how fine the line is between unsettling and settling noises. B1's arrangement is certainly not going to make anyone feel calmer, albeit there's nothing there that should cause anxiety. Strange, otherworldly vocal loops and whirring mechanics aren't exactly made for relaxation, though. C1, on the other hand, feels more like we're exploring the sonic landscape of another planet, while A1 is a creeping and slightly creepy arrangement that feels almost ghostly. Definitely one that more explorative and adventurous ears will be quick to find an affinity to, by the time D4 closes out with its suggestions of beat and rhythm coming from a minimal reverberation it feels like you've been somewhere. Working out where is another question.

Review: Definitely one for the collectors, Lime was Canadian duo (then husband and wife) Denis and Denyse LePage, and 'Angel Eyes' was originally the second single from their third studio album, 1983's Lime III. Almost 40 years later, the track has returned as a short form release, offering the original synth pop anthem, and a clubbier dub mix.

For many, though, not least Unidisc Canada, the label carrying this re-release, the major selling point is a remix - and something of a remodelling - courtesy of Turbo Recordings boss and dance music icon Tiga. Forsaking the rather smiley and bouncy original work, in favour of something grittier and altogether more dystopian, it's a masterclass of rough, gnarly broken electro, reworking and chopping vocals into disorientating loops, before finally introducing a kind of warehouse synth pop sound.

Review: Minimal Wave presents an exquisite 7" EP release by Martin Lloyd entitled "L'Amant Electronique". Martin is mainly known for his Oppenheimer Analysis (Minimal Wave) and Analysis (Survival Records) projects, yet through the years he recorded over two dozen tracks on his own, most of which never saw the light of day. The four selected tracks were recorded between 1980 and 1984 in his own "Feedback Studios" in Battersea , London. Martin Lloyd delivers vocals via the vocoder and carefully layers synth melodies which range from upbeat and danceable, to what could be the soundtrack to a 1981 post-apocalyptic science fiction film. The record is pressed on white vinyl with a heavy black jacket (spot gloss) and is limited to 999 hand-numbered copies.

Their latest single sees them return to the equally versatile and multi-faceted Golf Channel label, this time with the 12" single "It's Hot", starting with the punky, nowave Columbus Hotel mix, followed by an injection of tribal 808 beats on the B-side's Bonus mix, and the totally punked-out original version, a stuttering garage tune for the heads. This new EP for Beast In Space is another of his involving fusions of modulated synth sounds, acoustic elements and compelling rhythmic design. 'Electric Brea' (dub) is icy cold and frosted over twitch static electricity, 'Unnsa' then zones you out with a more airy groove that's awash with organic motifs and subtle uplifting melody and 'Glisk Science' is like an underwater cavern with floating bioluminescent lifeforms drift by next to shards of lighting coming down from above. 'Sisters' is a gorgeously sombre synth lullaby to close.

Review: Last year, we got a bit giddy with excitement over MIC's first two releases, which presented lost music from a 1980s drum machine enthusiast and a swathe of new cuts from Glaswegian cold-wave oddballs LAPS. The label's first missive of 2018 comes from rising star Lord Tusk and is every bit as good as its predecessors. Taken as a whole, it's rather hard to pigeonhole, featuring as it does tracks that variously fuse together sounds variously associated with post-punk dub, weirdo deep house, turn of the '90s London dub house (check the brilliant "Don't Be Shy"), the Art of Noise ("Beyond Limitation") and the dream house/dusty breakbeat fusions we've come to expect from Project Pablo and Jayda G ("Champion Lovers"). Throughout, it remains spaced-out, fuzzy and eccentric.

Xeno & Oaklander - "He's A Liquid" (3:21)
Review: While it has perhaps been slightly lost in the depths of time, and in the vastness of the ambient ocean, John Foxx's Metamatic label is a cornerstone of British leftfield and electronica. Since the late 1990s the label has released a steady and impressive selection of material that never truly fits into one genre or under one roof. This new collaborative EP is everything that UK electronic music is about, with five exploratory slices of machine noise that simply make perfect sense. Wrangler's "He's A Liquid", for instance, takes a mechanical industrial groove and spreads it over tight sci-fi sonics; Hannah Peel's "Tidal Wave" satisfies the pop fans with a slow and chimerical heart-stopper; "030" by LoneLady is a violin-led bundle of percussion and desolate vocal strips. The B-side flexes more muscle thanks to the head-banging pseudo trance of "No-One Driving" by The Soft Moon, followed by Xeno and Oaklander's nastier, more break-driven version of "He's A Liquid".

The Reason Why
Review: Reissued over two decades since its original release, the second full-length from Liverpool's Ladytron still thrums with the same sharp-edged futurism that made it such a cult touchpoint. Tracks like 'Seventeen' and 'Evil' captured a tension between robotic detachment and raw emotional charge, anchored in the band's icy synth palette and minimal, deadpan vocals. While 'Blue Jeans' flirts with glammy melancholy, 'Turn It On' and 'Fire' dial up the menace, tapping into something more volatile. There's something surgical about the sequencing tooi'Cracked LCD', 'NuHorizons' and 'Cease2exist' stretch into more abstract terrain, before folding back into hook-laced electro-pop with the closing title track and 'The Reason'. With Daniel Hunt and Mickey Petralia co-producing, the album took shape in Los Angeles but never lost the European chill that defined their sound. It's a record that helped redraw the map for synth-pop in the early 2000sineither retro-futurist pastiche nor pure nostalgia, but something sleek, cinematic and entirely their own.

Review: In 2015, long-serving Slovenian experimentalists Laibach became the first Western band to perform in North Korea, including a number of songs from "The Sound of Music" - a favourite in the DPRK since the 1960s - alongside their own material. Three years on, and with the assistance of Silence's Boris Benko and vocalist Marina Martensson, they've finally delivered their interpretation of the musical film's familiar soundtrack. Swaying between rock balladry, experimental synth-pop, darker tones and industrial style fuzziness, the band's covers are both revolutionary and revelatory, as staples such as "The Lonely Goatherd", "My Favorite Things" and "Do-Re-Mi" are given radical makeovers. As they did at the concert that inspired the set, they also give their interpretation of some traditional North Korean folk songs.

Drawing on house, disco, garage and broken beat it is a rich affair with a strong UK vibe. There is elegance and symphony to opener 'Xyleac' that immediately gets your head amongst the stars. 'Diluspth' keeps up the majestic synth while 'Bbyncole' is double-speed techno with balmy celestial synths and hurried bass that locks you in. Tender ambient pieces like 'Shores Of Eternal Life' reset the mood and then the second half is a series of shorter sketches packed with electronic soul.

Certainly, very few will be familiar with the work of Geoffrey Landers, a Denver, Colarado-based multi-instrumentalist who recorded three albums and one single between 1982 and 1987. This superb retrospective contains material from all of these releases, deftly showcasing Landers' intriguing musical palette - a trippy mixture of vintage electronics, experimental new wave influences, strange spoken word snippets, occasional dub influences, effects-laden guitar passages, post-punk attitude, minimalist synth-funk and what would now be considered discordant art-rock. It's a stylistic melting pot that makes for wonderful listening.

Review: The Antinote label seem to excel at shining a light on some lesser known talents of French music irrespective of style or tone, as their second album project of the year demonstrates. You'd be forgiven for not knowing who Stephane Laporte was, with the French musician largely working under the Domotic guise, but fans of Antinote and inquisitive newcomers will be rewarded by a sublime long player in the shape of Fourrure Sounds. Some 11 tracks deep, Fourrure Sounds is the result of Laporte's night time recordings with an array of vintage synth gear, a 4 track Akai tape recorder and a "cosy fur carpet". Given this environment, it is little surprise that the album turns out to be a luxuriant journey through imaginary synth soundscapes which gets more inviting with each listen.

Luckily, Spain's excellent Domestica label have herein compiled the very best from the duo, an eleven track showcase of the band's top productions from the years between 1985 and 1989. As you'd expect, the bulk of the compilation is made up of fast-paced drum machines patters glazed in the era's melancholic sound, where winding, lonesome vocals glide and wash over the Kraftwerk-style beats. There are even bursts of early electro within, such as the gnarly "Five Lies", and more experimental moments like "Dark Orris" or the EBM-charged "Flax Girl Room". Wonderfully DIY and a much added addition to any romantic's collection.

Review: Minimal Wave dig into the archives of Gallic synth savant Philippe Laurent, presenting a selection of tracks recorded between the late seventies and late eighties. This is the first time all but the most ardent fans of synth wave music will have heard some of the nine tracks here, as they range between previously unreleased or culled from obscure tape only compilations. There's an approach to rhythm, depth and structure here that is startling, given the technology used, with a bounce throughout that's familiar to the early Detroit electro artists. Pressed up on heavyweight 180gram translucent red vinyl that is housed in a deluxe sleeve, this release will prove to be every bit as essential as previous Minimal Wave output for fans of the synth sound.

Philippe Laurent - "Exposition 1"
HNN - "Authority" (feat Jeff & Jane Hudson)
Review: Two generations of French minimal wave feature here on an excellent 12" from the Electric Voices label. Phillipe Laurent will be familiar to most thanks to the 2011 issue of his work under the Hot Bip alias on Minimal Wave, and his induction into the Electric Voice annals takes on a similarly archival approach. The A-side features a fully remastered version of "Exposition 1", which formed part of the uber-rare Kunstaustellung tape Laurent issued on the DTW label in 1985 and sounds staggeringly ahead of its time. Complementing this, HNN's Gregg Anthe collaborates with Electric Voice duo Jeff And Jane Hudson on "Authority," a track tinged with the sort of political subtext that Oppenheimer Analysis were famous for.

Review: Le Couleur consistently sidesteps complacency with each new album presenting a fresh musical experiment without ever losing its familiar foundation. With Comme dans un penthouse, the band takes its biggest leap into musical exploration yet as they revisit elements of 'Voyage Love' while delving deeper into disco infused with new wave nuances. The result is a cooler, more distant vibe compared to their previous work. The album crafts a narrative universe around Barbara, introduced in 'POP,' as she seeks excess, pleasure, and happiness amidst frenetic rhythms. From the Krautrock-inspired 'Autobahn' to futuristic tracks reminiscent of Das Mortal, Le Couleur deftly balances innovation with familiarity here on another sublime-sounding album.

A truly international concept, for those who don't know Lebanon Hanover's members are neither from Hanover nor Lebanon, and in fact are Larissa Georgiou, aka Larissa Iceglass of Switzerland, and William Maybelline of the UK. The where is less important than the what, though, and in this instance the what is some pretty heavy duty dark wave sounds, like you've stepped into a gothic opera.

Immediately captivating, it's angst for adults, packing insane levels of musicality and some far-reaching ideas, but always grounded in a level of musicality that makes the whole thing feel much less off-the-wall than many of its moments are. Packed with atmosphere, the kind of noises that seem to channel directly to the centre of your brain, and so much dark energy you quickly start to picture how good this would be live.

Review: Lebanon Hanover are a darkwave duo who comprise Swiss artist Larissa Georgiou and the UK's William Morris. They emerged 10 years ago with Why Not Just Be Solo, and swiftly followed up with two more albums including 2013's breakthrough Tomb For Two. Their following has grown over time, and this album remains in high demand so they foil the sharks by presenting it once again for those wishing to clasp a slice of neo-goth perfection in their hands. With all the style points pitched to perfection, from Peter Hook-esque bass licks to Georgiou's deathly vocals, this is as classic as anything from the original late 70s - early 80s era.

Review: British-German dark wave duo Lebanon Hanover aren't exactly known for emanating positive vibes. Instead, theirs is an aural world that's coated in darkness, moody, muted melodies, seductively aching and brooding vocals, the feeling of moving beyond hopelessness into a place where you just have to embrace the sinister, macabre and somewhat eerie.

All of which goes some way to explaining why we're obsessed with them. These are the hard-to-find tracks from those David Lynch road or bar scenes. The songs that set an atmosphere of unease but also a kind of hidden beauty. The deeper we listen, the more we feel the spectrum of emotion that's caught and bottled inside the tunes. Deceptively complex, surprisingly life affirming.

Review: Ton Lebbink has led an active life; first as a drummer for the Dutch punk band Mecano, then as an odd-jobs sleuth, then finally a fitness instructor. When house music took the world by storm in the early 90s, Lebbink hopped on the bandwagon - trading in his cult status as one of the main faces of the 1980s underground, for a life spent toiling to produce sampledelic house music in comparative anonymity. Wat Doe Je Met Me is one of many fruits of Lebbink's labour during this renaissance period: only three tracks appear on the EP, but all make up an unusual early house sound tempered by Gregorian chant, cut-up vocal, subdued synth plucks and an overall hazy sound.

Review: Throbbing Gristle's Industrial Records originally released Thomas Leer and Robert Rental's The Bridge in 1979. It was the Glaswegian duo's only album but was one that had a looming influence over artists such as Art of Noise and John Foxx. At the time of its release it was utterly unique, a completely new starting point of a DIY electro pop sound that was made in a bedroom with synths and reel-to-reel tape machines and full of experimental ideas and fresh takes on punk. The whole record is run through with haunting vibe and a tinny aesthetic thanks to the cheap gear it was made on.

Rental passed away in 2000 and this was their only record together, but boy what a record it is. It first came on Throbbing Gristle's legendary Industrial Records and immediately showed off the artists' unique musical visions with its avant-garde synth-pop sounds and evocative electronic landscapes. It comes just after the end of a vital exhibition in London, 'From The Port To The Bridge' which shared the story behind the making of this cult classic album.

Review: Here is the debut LP by Austrian trio Leitstrahl. Stoff, Paul Raal and Boogaloo Steve are said to have been close collaborators over the last decade and a half, with Chromium Dioxide merging each respective member's love of the '80s - Hi-NRG, Italo, electro-pop and synth movie scores in particular - across a dozen tracks across two discs. From the neon-lit nite drive of opening cut 'Telemark', to moments of late night euphoria captured on VHS as heard on 'Europa Supersaw' featuring Jon Jon Foster of Bronski Beat. The sunset Balearica of 'Girotti' featuring Christina Mirabilis is for people watching at cafes on a boulevard in Rimini circa '88, while the slo-mo romantic pop of 'White Tail' featuring Jimmy Baker shows yet more diversity in their repertoire. Highly recommended.

Review: Leroy Se Meurt make a bold statement here with their new long player on the Mannequin label. It finds the Parisian pair keeping the foundational sounds of EBM, post-punk and electro at the core but also explores around the edges in fantastic fashion. The mood here is heavy and abrasive rock textures permeate the tracks next to electric synths and over worked samplers. The tracks feature lyrics sung in Turkish and French and are hard hitting affairs with floor facing, repetitive loop madness next to double-tempo cuts with chaotic guitars amongst much more.

Review: Mannequin really can do no wrong if you're looking for cold wave, synth oddities, EBM and the like. As this LFT outing goes to show. Born in a twisted, semi-industrial place that's packed with percussion, reverberated noises, growling basslines, and a kind of sinister sexual energy (or maybe that's just us?), it's timeless stuff providing your concept of time begins and ends in the modern era. A retro futurist palette with punk smeared across its face.

Nevertheless, variety abounds once you have started to pick things apart. There's the slow, hypnosis of 'Blood Vessel', a track that sounds like acid meeting a rather monotone political speech. Meanwhile, 'Narcissist', featuring the vocal prowess of Rosaceae, could be the product of Blondie spending a night at KitKat Club in the late-1980s. We could go on, but simply put it's a visceral adventure into dark synth pop, and a highly enjoyable experience from start to finish.

Review: Wearing 1980s synth pop influences on their sleeve, and sounding exactly like they belong on the mighty DFA, Brooklyn's Light Asylum were rightly praised at the time they put out their debut - and, to this date - only studio album, circa 2012. Critics noted that, at a time when dance-punk crossover was everywhere, driven by LCD Soundsystem and many of the acts frontman James Murphy signed to DFA, the New Yorkers manage to differentiate themselves from the pack in several ways.

Taking a hint of Depeche Mode (well, maybe a bit more), a pinch of Nine Inch Nails, and parts of Throbbing Gristle, Gary Numan, and other pioneers, Light Asylum managed to introduce some much-needed light and spatiality into the often claustrophobically dark and oppressive industrial synth world. In doing so, they offer a sound that's somehow both universally accessible and niche, which is never an easy line to tread.

Review: It's a really positive thing that the history of electronic music, and in particular synthesis, has been reappraised in recent years with a specific goal of paying tribute to the women who pushed boundaries while pushing buttons on experimental equipment, many having been all-but-written out of the modular, sampler and drum machine pantheons. Still, some remain criminally overlooked, for example Venezuelan pioneer Oksana Linde.

Amazingly, four decades after much of this work was written, Linde is now seeing her first ever full album released. Aquatic & Other Worlds collates her sounds, noises, and electronic overtures conceived between 1982 and 1989, and presents them as a dense sonic realm crying out to be explored. It's no exaggeration to say that fans of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze will be in their element here. Nor is it misleading to say the lady in question can stand up to both of those world-famous names.

Review: Linea Aspera is the London duo of Ryan Ambridge (Synths/Programming) and Alison Lewis (Vocals/Synths). They began the project in November 2011, technically drawing inspiration from electronic music from the early 1980s. Within the duo, Alison writes and performs all vocal elements, while Ryan is responsible for the writing and performing of the electronics, as well as recording and mixing of the final recordings. For their debut album they utilized small, simple analog synthesizer set up: Roland SH-09, Roland Juno 6, Vermona DRM MKiii, Korg Poly 800 and Analogue Solutions Semblance. Linea Aspera's sound includes clear influences from early electronic body music, classic synth-pop and, in some instances, industrial and noise. Lyrically the band incorporates the sciences of osteology, neuroscience, and anthropology weaving a new medical language around themes of desire, despair and renewal. Linea Aspera serve up an icebox of dark doom riding on Alison's powerful vocals with a soft but sharp touch.

Review: Minimal Wave returns to their Belgian fancy, Linear Movement, for an all new trawl through their archive called The Linear Way. Two of the six tracks featured, "The Linear Way" and "Don't Try To Trick Me", have been lifted from the band's rare 1983 Pulse Music tape whilst the remainder are Linear Movement songs that have seen official release before. Of the latter, the quirky quasi techno of "Inside Outside" - potentially the best tune on here - and the mechanical, slow-burning lo-fi electro of "I Might As Well Be There" stand out in particular. But The Linear Way sounds great as a whole. Highly recommended.

Linear Movement is mastermind Peter Bonne (A Split-Second, Twilight Ritual, Autumn) joined by Peter Koutstaal, and Lieve Van Steerteghem on vocals for several tracks. Some tracks appear on the exquisite Pulse Music cassette while the rest are previously unreleased. Linear Movement was featured on V/A The Lost Tapes compilation LP with their highly acclaimed The Game, described as an "unstoppable pop song". Linear Movement have been called "a more primitive, cold wave Visage", and have been compared to the Human League. Peter differentiated LM from his other projects TR and Aut by the distinct sound of the compositions: they were poppier.

Review: Retro futurism would be one way to describe Cybernetic Window, and indeed Listening Center in general. Opting to approach the notions of the years ahead with a subtle Utopianism, rather than the more frequent and, given the state of the world now, believable dystopian tones, it's a glittering work of beauty born entirely of mechanics but still allowed to soar when it spreads its wings. Which is pretty much on most tracks.

Call it electro, call it synth fantasy, this limited pressing is deep but also dance floor, it's strange and otherworldly but feels like it's been in your collection for aeons - the last remnants of an advanced civilisation scattered to the wind. A wonderfully strange and melodic trip into a broken beat dream, the only question really is whether you want to wake up or not.

Lockdowns were over, and Liminal Soul brought us a celebratory embrace rooted in dance music and post-club night warmth. "Trance-tipped, heart-on-sleeve dance music that's never shy and still always chilled out enough to sit back and contemplate," we said at the time. Myrtus Myth is a very different thing altogether, but thankfully feels no less optimistic. Definitely sitting closer to pop, a kind of soft-yacht-rock, electronic-jazz-chill, and beach bar downtempo compared with the dance floors we were so keen to revisit three years ago, a few things have survived - all of them wonderful deep. Another stunner, to put all that another way.

Review: 1983's Invisible Voices by Rudiger Lorenz had never received a reissue treatment since its original release, and even that was limited to 500 copies back then! Anthology have come through correct on this collector's item, one which can only be described as proto-techno music. Some of the tracks are so ahead of its time that even we couldn't believe that is was made in the early 80's. "Between The Times", for instance, filters and sweeps its way through terse beats much like Optical or Matrix's d&b classics, whereas other tracks like "Out Of The Past" could have been made by the likes of Aphex Twin. Could it even be him? Probably not, but what is for sure is that you can't possibly miss this. Wonderful stuff.
