Review: It's taken a while, but finally the World has woken up to what a terrific DJ Josey Rebelle is. Having snagged her first magazine cover earlier in the year, she's now mixed her first CD for Tim Sweeney's Beats In Space label. It's an absolute doozy, as you'd expect, with this vinyl sampler showcasing four of her most potent selections. In keeping with her soul-fired eclecticism, we're treated to synth-laden electro goodness (Fotomachine's "Bboy"), some deliciously drowsy and deep slipped two-step swing (Shy One's "Route II Romeos"), a slab of lusciously fluid jazz-house (the endless electric piano solos of Access 58's "Jazz Drama") and the most stunningly stirring, string-laden drum and bass cut you'll hear this year (Nookie's remix of Rogue Unit's "Dance of the Sarooes").

Review: The latest album project from Tim Sweeney's Beats In Space label introduces Palmbomen II, a name that is perhaps not that familiar but one you will want to explore further after spending some time with this self-titled set. The current project of Netherlands-born, Los Angeles-based artist Kai Hugo, Palmbomen II is an endeavour that operates concurrent to Palmbomen. Whereas the latter, more established Palmbomen is based around live instrumentation, Hugo's second iteration focuses on music made from battered old hardware recorded to tape in his mother's attic. Adding to the intrigue, this album is heavily inspired by The X-Files with all the track titles named after characters from the cult TV show. It's just the sort of strange music we expect from Sweeney's label.

Review: Given the label's status as the offshoot of a celebrated weekly radio show, it seems fitting that Beats In Space has finally launched a mix series. The first volume comes from Moko Shibata AKA Powder, a Japanese DJ/producer renowned for the undeniably cosmic and otherworldly nature of her productions and performances. "Powder In Space" takes this dreamy, intergalactic approach as a base, with Shibata beatmatching and blending her way through an eclectic but interconnected mix of yearning electronica, deep tropical grooves, dreamy experimentalism, soft-focus grooves, seductive deep house, jazzy rollers, elastic techno and oddball ambient. It's one hell of a journey.

Kangaroo Ground (12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: BIS 018. Rel: 23 Feb 15
Deep House
  1. Kangaroo Ground
  2. Ferntree Gully
Review: Over his last few releases, Australian producer Tornado Wallace has crafted a trademark sound that blends colourful, kaleidoscopic melodies with dreamy chords and an almost Balearic sense of glassy-eyed release. Interestingly, these aural trademarks are played down a little on this follow-up to his 2013 Beats In Space debut. Sure, they can be heard in the picturesque, luscious beauty of flipside "Ferntree Gully", but the title track is an altogether rougher concoction. "Kangaroo Ground" sees the Melbourne man successfully try his hand at acid house, layering twisted 303 lines and occasional cosmic chords over a clanking drum machine rhythm. It's a surprise, but a very impressive one.

Review: Josey Rebelle has taken the slow and steady arc from underground champion to treasured icon of DJ culture. Now it's common knowledge she's a peerless selector with an innate style of communication through her tunes, and this incredible run for Beats In Space is further proof. Following on from Powder's startling first instalment, this session posits the DJ mix as vibrant artistic statement, pushing back against the tide of mix series closures and swathes of half-baked online streams. It also absolutely kicks too, ripping through techno, house, electro and more with Rebelle's surefooted swagger all over the blends and juxtapositions.
