A Race Of Angels - "Just Begin"
Akwasi Mensah, Dego, Theo Parrish - "It's Just Begun"
Review: All has been quiet at Wildheart Recordings since label founders Theo Parrish and Tony Allen inaugurated proceedings with the soulful double drop of Day Like This, which is understandable given their respective touring schedules. Out of nowhere a second release arrives and finds Wildheart looking back but still being forward thinking with a timely reappraisal of a West Coast gem from A Race Of Angels. The recording alias of Yeofi Andoh, A Race of Angels will be familiar to Gifted & Blessed fans for their Steoples work together and his fragile vocal talents is on full display with "Just Begin". Initially released as part of the ArtDontSleep Presents... From L.A. With Love compilation back in 2007, "Just Begin" is a classy slice of minimal songwriting and gets further blessed by a B Side rework featuring the collective talents of Theo, Dego and Akwasi Mensah.

Olli Ahvenlahti - "Minor Minor" (4:36)
The Stance Brothers - "Minor Minor" (3:17)
Review: "Minor Minor" was one of the strongest cuts on Finnish jazz pianist Olli Ahvenlahti's 2017 set "Thinking, Whistling", so it's great to see the track get a deserved single release. Built around a simple, hip-swinging drumbeat and fluid, surprisingly funky double bass, the track sees Ahvenlahti and tenor sax player Jussi Kannaste battle for supremacy via laidback but on-point solos. On the flipside, drummer/producer Teppo Makynen AKA Teddy Rok dons the Stance Brothers alias to serve up a killer cover version that drags the track further towards jazz-funk territory via slick guitar solos, squeezable synth-bass and some particularly enjoyable vibraphone lines.

Teshome Meteku - "Hasabe" (3:55)
Review: Another weighty slab of Ethiopian music history from Mr Bongo... First up is the hugely influential fusionist Mulatu Astatke with the Latin-meets-Afro jam "Assiyo Bellema". Loaded with frenetic guitars and mesmerising drum work from Frank Holder, this was actually recorded during Mulatu's time in London. Flip for an equally influential force in Ethiopian music: Soul Ekos Band affiliate Teshome Meteku with a more traditional local sound, Teshome's yearning insistent vocals wrap around the horns and tight drums like fog around a mountain. Captivating.

The Kevin Fingier Collective - "Addis Ababa" (3:14)
Review: Fingier is Acid Jazz's new sub label for the multifarious works of Argentinian producer Kevin Fingier. Fingier touches on soul, R&B, boogaloo and raw funk in his music, and that's true once again on this collaboration with Abdoulaye Badiane. Badiane is originally from Senegal but now based in Argentina, and he's been travelling the world for 20 years teaching African music. Now he brings his musical heritage to bear on Fingier's funk, and the fusion is incredibly sweet and soulful. 'Kairo Bancou Moulu' has a 60s touch, while 'Addis Ababa' naturally takes its cues from the incredible legacy of Ethiopian jazz.

The UMC's - "One To Grow On" (4:45)
Review: The Originals sample-seeking series continue as we're asked to compare and contrast an original source and a classic execution made years later. This is a perfect example; here Blue Mitchell's Blue Note 1967 smoky jazz instrumental (taken from his Heads Up! album) is remembered in all its multi-strand narrative glory before we jump deep into early 90s b-boy heaven by way of New York's UMC's. A fine lesson in how to work a sample to the funkiest effect.

Ely Camargo - "Taieiras" (2:18)
Trio Esperanca - "Nao Aguento Voce" (2:06)
Review: The Brazil 45 series is pure gold for lovers of Latin sounds across the funk, jazz and soul spectrum. Each one sells out fats but usually emcees back around, as is the case with this 18th edition. It features Ely Camargo's 'Taieiras' from his Ely's 1972 album Cantos Da Minha Gente and is a lively folk-inspired track sampled famously by DJ Yoda in 2012. Despite recording 12 albums, Ely remains an enigmatic figure whose music is all we have to feed off. On the flip side, Rio sibling trio Trio Esperanca shine with their psychedelic gem from their 1971 self-titled album. Known for their stunning harmonies, the group released seven albums between 1963 and 1975 but this is one of their finest moments.

Review: Funk fans will of course know that The Vicious Seeds fail from St. Petersburg and for a while now they have been turning out 45s that mix up raw cinematic grooves and deep funk instrumentals. For this newest 7" they sign up vibraphonist Pavel Chiznik who brings with him plenty of flair on top of the well versed rhythm section. These two cuts explore some airy, uplifting and summery jazz vibes a la Roy Ayers with dope beats and plenty of sample-friendly drumbreaks. Add in a load of funky basslines, some carefully psyched-out guitars and lush vibes and you have a vital little 45rpm.

Basa Basa (4:08)
Sahara Akwantuo (3:46)
Review: Those with a deep knowledge of Berlin's Ghanaian ex-pat "burger-highlife" scene may already be familiar with Lee Dodou, a singer who recorded a number of classic singles and albums during the 1980s as part of bands Georg Darko and Kantata. He retired from music in 1991, but has been persuaded to return to action by the Philophon team. This comeback single is pretty impressive all told, with A-side "Basa Basa" - a triumphantly celebratory chunk of 1960s "concert party" highlife rich in punchy horn lines and Dodou's full-throated vocals - being joined on the flipside by the slower, synth-laden "Sahara Akwantou". Brilliantly, the label describes this as "kraut-life" due to its unique (and rather good) fusion of highlife and German kosmiche.

Dr No & The Cuban Mafia - "007 Mambo" (Texas Toni Skyfall re-edit)
Sundance Kid - "South American Getaway" (Texas Toni Jazz Dance re-edit)
Review:  Two dancefloor bombs which should make tasty additions to your record box. Dr No & The Cuban Maffia are a six piece outfit from Central Havana who recorded this tribute, ''007 Mambo'' as a nod to Ian Fleming's Mr Bond back in the late 1970s, along with dozens of other cover versions to assist their own compositions in their live repertoire. This version was originally only 90 seconds long, so Texas Toni extends the journey with some funky Latino peak time pressure. On the flip, Sundance Kid drops an infamous soundtrack and Texas Toni re-edits the original parts, disposing of the downtempo elements to concentrate purely on the dancefloor potential.

Review: BDQ's next limited 7" is a superb three-way collab between Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity. Their long-lost version of classic dancer 'Jeannine' is powered by wandering basslines and swinging Hammond Organ chords that bring warmth to the free-flowing jazz vocals up top. It has never before been on 45rpm and has been all but unknown for the last 50 years but was recently rediscovered while the label head was looking for something else for the recent 'Auger Incorporated' compilation on Soul Bank Music. On the flip is a mod jazz dancer who is just as hip and ready to make an impact.

Review: Germany's Legere Recordings is the home of authentic, modern funk and jazz. For this tasty 7" outing, Welsh musician Carwyn Ellis and Rio 18 link with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales for an alarmingly exotic tune given its country of origin. This is samba drenched in sun, with all the authentic drums, soaring strings and percussive details you would expect next to some great lead flute work. That's the case on 'Ola' anyway, the more upbeat party starter, while 'Ti' is a sentimental and slow-motion ballad for weepy moments.

Now he has released two new singles featuring singer, songwriter and actress Haley Reinhart. Teaming up with his long-time band, The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, for the occasion, the unlikely but accomplished pair deliver unique covers of Taylor Swift's hit 'Lover' and Loreen's 'Tattoo.' Leaning on a jazz note, most of the material is centred away from the dance floor and yet there is always plenty of movement and joyous rhythm, particularly from Halsall's appearances. Here, we have a reissue of 2015's "Journey In Satchidananda", a majestic wave of jazz flutes, seductive piano keys, in what is an altogether dreamy sort of setting, which is further evolved on the supremely euphoric waves of the unbeatable "Blue Nile". It is the first in what will become a series of special 7" releases with bespoke artwork from brother Daniel Halsall. First up are two personal favourites from the boss himself. 'A Badder Weather' is a deep cut groove that never lets up, with gorgeous wraps rinsing down the face of the bold pianos and soaring trumpet sounds, all finished off with some heavy double bass. As per usual, the imprint know exactly where to source the very best in the contemporary gear while everyone else is looking to the 70s for that adrenaline rush. Rhapsody In Berlin (part 2) (3:39)
Review: Part of a series of reissues by Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids. Once privately pressed, Rhapsody In Berlin is the result of an extensive exploration of Africa before returning to the German capital. Both sides are built around one hooky refrain as each player takes the lead and the momentum into brave new areas. With a robust support from the heavy funk guitar backline and overwhelmingly funky drums, it's all about range of horns (muted or otherwise), flutes and pygmy flutes that weave tightly into each other with a sense of natural chaos. As the name of Idris's San Fran dance troupe suggests, this is a bona fide cultural odyssey.

Jorge Ben & Toquinho - "Carolina, Carol Bela" (3:09)
Joao Donato - "A Ra" (2:32)
Review: Jorge Ben is a legendary figure in Brazilian music, often called the James Brown of Brazil, and is famous for writing the iconic anthem 'Mas Que Nada' as well as innovating within the samba sound. Amongst many other great successes, he collaborated with singer and guitarist Toquinho on the duet 'Carolina, Carol Bela' on the Brazilian label RGE. This song was famously sampled by DJ Marky and XRS for their drum and bass track 'LK' which became a global hit and topped the UK charts. Joao Donato is a renowned Brazilian jazz and bossa nova pianist who worked with icons like Tom Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, and Gilberto Gil and his track 'A Ra' appeared on his classic 1973 album Quem e quem, which has since been recognised by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 greatest albums of all time. Review: This tasty 7" single brings together two stalwarts of the thriving Finnish jazz scene, namely saxophonist Timo Lassy and drummer Teppo Makynen. It's A-side "Calling James" that hits home hardest, as Lassy adds a snaking, alluring sax solo - all parping blasts and fluid fills - to a bustling, percussively rich Makynen drum track. Despite the fact that there's no other instrumentation, it's a genuinely heavy dancefloor workout. On the flip you'll find the looser and slightly more experimental "Yanki", where Lassy provides some free-jazz style soloing over a distinctively left-of-centre Makynen drum workout.

I've Gotta Keep On Lovin' You (4:10)
Review: Athens of The North delivers once again here with another delightful reissue of a soul classic by Bernetia Miller And The Soul Groovers. An original of this Georgian gem is insanely rare and in fact the Athens boss himself has never actually seen a copy. It was recorded in the studio of Phil Walden's studio in Macon, Georgia and Bernetia herself has said it took many takes and plenty of hard work to get the result they wanted. Backing band The Soul Groovers had their own bus on which they toured plenty and this reissue is from the master tapes owned by Bernetia. 'You Can Tell Me Goodbye' has lo-fi drums and raw horns with a yearning vocal while 'I've Gotta Keep On Lovin' You' is more slow and steady and emotionally moving with a more tender vocal.

This 7" is an album sampler of Italian library inspired disco-funk that draws on the sound's 70s heyday. It was a shared love of this sound and this period that brought these two artists together having first played together at a gig in Italy in 2017. Having finally got together to record, they have mixed up contemporary analogue inspired arrangements and experimental, joyful, playful sounds that are as good at home as they will be on the 'floor. This new single comes ahead of a forthcoming debut album later in the year and features a couple of gorgeous tunes. 'Acqua' is a joyous tune with a steady 6/8 groove that is loaded with flutes, sax lines and arpeggiated synthesizers. This tidy "45" kicks off with one of the album's most potent tracks, 'Sweet Path', a wonderfully laidback and sun-kissed jazz-funk number rich in simmering strings, chunky bass, eyes-closed jazz guitar and some genuinely lovely group harmony backing vocals. Title track 'Keumgang' is a fiery and fearsome affair in which foreboding, spy-funk style horn blasts spar with jaunty accordion motifs, tipsy trumpet solos and psyche-funk organ lines atop a cumbia style rhythm track performed by a trio of percussionists. Over on the flip 'Tampomambo' is an even more up-tempo and groovy affair featuring a heavier, fuzzy mambo groove, wilder accordion sounds and a seriously weighty bassline. It, too, has a slightly psychedelic feel so should land with DJs who like the more hallucinatory end of Latin music.

Lost In Amazonia (4:19)
Review: Brazilian jazz vocalist Tania Maria is a true icon with a huge back catalogue of music behind her, but of course it sometimes helps if a diligent digger weaves a path through the reams of albums and pulls out a couple of the best. That's just what Soul Brother have done with this 7", looking back to Maria's 1983 album Come With Me and lifting a pair of pearlers for a fresh walk in the sun. 'Come With Me' is a sundown slinker, with Maria's airy tone gliding over the sprightly piano chords while on the flip 'Lost In Amazonia' is a joyous, scat-powered slice of jazz funk with incredible slap bass flex.

Review: Two beautiful compositions from the eponymous debut album'70s New York fusionists Tarika Blue's, never previously released on 45. Props to Athens From The North must be given once again!! "Truth Is The Key" is an ageless swinging jazz piece that still sounds futureproofed to this day... Largely thanks to the pristine musicianship, Irene Datcher's vocals and the liquid soul arp solo. Few tracks live up their name as much as "Dreamflower". Spacey, somnambulant and laced in swooning dynamics, it's not hard to understand why the likes of Erykah Badu sampled this one.

Review: The 'Diplomats Of Soul' are DJs Mike Allin and Ralph Tee, who made a name for themselves by spinning only the most waxen soul bits across all of Asia's highest-end luxury bars and hotels. A diggers' delight, their eponymous label most recently lays claim to Grady Tate's 'Lady Love', a naturalistic, cinematic slice of soul about nothing less than the birds and the bees. It's pitted against the low-swinging 'Moondance', a feverish blues bourbon showing off both Tate's classic singing and drumming. The Diplomats have certainly quelled international tensions between soul pushers on this one.

Review: American jazz drummer and singer Grady Tate was a busy man back in the day - he released some 38 odd albums from the mid-60s onwards and many big tunes. 'Be Black Baby' is a proud celebration of his race at a time when it was no doubt hugely risky to do so - right in the midst of the civil rights movement's peak days. It's a funked-up number with a potent message delivered with belief and empowerment. This unique 7" repress pairs a stereo version with a mono recording.

Review: TC.KYLIE x The Hourglass deliver a dynamic jazz fusion outing here that mixes up Hong Kong, Japanese, and British cultures in a top debut album. Jazz fusion pianist Kylie leads her band with great energy while playing keyboard and synth keytar that is a little reminiscent of Japanese jazz rock. Based in Hong Kong and London, she's inspired by Shaun Martin, Robert Glasper and Japanese acid jazz groups like Fox Capture Plan and Jabberloop and that shows in these sounds. They are bright, happy and uplifting with the majestic flute leads of 'Merry-go-round Of Life ' impossible not to fill you with excitement and joy.

Review: Galaxy Sound Co's Black Cash & Theo AKA Thelonious Beats are the most accomplished edit duo on the label. They know just what to do to tweak and touch up classic tunes into sympathetic modern versions. Here they work on supremely funky, soulful, jazzy fusion tunes that sound familiar even if you don't know exactly what they are. 'We're In Love' is a real smoother, a heart melter with smooth chords and life affirming riffs that are gentle but hugely emotional. The flip is a tune that has been sampled heavily over the years and is another seductive and sensuous funk jam with lush synth work and steamy drums that get right into your affections.

Review: Black Cash & Theo AKA Thelonious Beats are two of the most accomplished edit masters on the Galaxy Sound Co label. Here they come back with another pair of vital nuggets, firstly with 'Not So Easy (To Be Free).' It's a bumping afro-funk gem with a majestic lead horn and plenty of uplifting chords. On the flip of the limited 7" is a remastered edit of soul gem 'Our Lives Are Shaped.' It's lead by a lung busting female vocal with sultry backing singers, plenty of noodling funk bass and colourful vibraphone work up top. A tasty pair of tunes for sure.

Review:  Black Cash & Theo AKA Thelonious Beats are Jedi love beatmakers and edit kings. The bulk of their work comes on the Galaxy Sound Co label out of the US of A and just a few weeks after their last outing they return with two more golden grooves. This one is a real heater to keep you warm during the winter months and ensure your New Year's Eve goes off in style. 'Groovin' stays low and rides a lo-fi boom-bap with soulful guitars and heat damaged organ chords. 'Little Green Apples' (remastered Jazz mix edit) is super sentimental and rich in sound.

Their latest is a remastered and limited 7" pressing of the glorious Red Tribe. Review: "Continuing in the popular tradition of slick, supremely produced 2010s neo-soul, comes this unique collaboration between CC's Duval Timothy and multi-instrumentalist / producer Cktrl. A separated 2x7" LP with two long-form suites of equal length on either single side, the artists invite us to "play both records at the same time or play them separately and hear different versions". Line up the two files / discs correctly, and you'll hear the intended effect; ambient solo piano, plucking synths and fluttering stereo brass, conveying the unison of two artists who have by now become deftly in tune with one another's respective practises.

Review: More must-check reissue action from crate digger Kev Beadle's Mind Fluid label. This time, Beadle has decided to mine Jan Tober and Ron Scatterfield's exceedingly rare, sought-after 1975 album As Long as There's Music. It's a wise choice, because the set is a beautifully breezy fusion of samba, Latin jazz, jazz-funk and folk, topped off by sweet, easy listening style duet vocals by Tober and Scatterfield. The most club-ready of the quartet of cuts on show is opener 'What Game Shall We Play Today', an inspired and life-affirming Chick Correa cover blessed with wonderful pianos and superb percussion. There's plenty to get excited about elsewhere across the EP though, not least sublime, loved-up closing cut 'With The One You Love'.

Review: Mr Bongo's Brazil 45s series gets its rock on with two hairy grooves, both of which have enjoyed the sampler's crafty knives over the years. First up, Tom Ze's "Jimmy Renda-se" rolls with an oily sleazy groove that's peppered by a playful lyrical rhythm that transcends language barriers. Ben's "Take It Easy My Brother Charlie" joins the dots between Samba and very light Rock with all the signatures that made Mr Ben the legend he remains to this day with big vocal harmonies and infectious textures of Brazilian percussion.

Toni Tornado - "O Jornaleiro"
Som Tres - "Homenagem A Mongo"
Review: Rich gutsy soul from a man who's regularly described as Brazil's James Brown, "O Journalerio" is a blueprint funk jam. Released in 1971 (on his hyper-rare album BR-3) it's all about the orchestrated swing, bluesy groove and Hammond licks so lavish you need to towel on every listen. Flip for Som Tres... An off-shoot of the Sambalanco Trio, it's the sound of Cesar Camargo Mariano controlling a restrained rolling slice of filmic instrumental funk where horns, keys and drums gather momentum with big band drama. Neither have been released on 45" before, making this all the more special.
