Review: Jorge Ben is one of the most influential Brazilian artists of his era. The so-called samba king brought all new rule-breaking style to the genre - both musically and lyrically - and fomented his own freeform acid-samba spin-off over the course of an impossibly high number of albums. One of the problems is that many of them were all given the same name, including this one, Ben. Fortunately which ever one you pick up there is joy to be had. Here there are plenty of psychedelic head twisters such as the opener 'Morre O Burro Fica O Homem' as well as deer, more soulful cuts like 'Fio Maravilha'.

Review: As you can probably work out from the title, this one is the tenth album from Brazil's samba king and genre game-changer Jorge Ben (it makes a change from him calling most of his albums 'Ben' to be honest.) It came first back in 1973 and features a collection of his then-most popular songs. All of them come from the first decade of his career but were all rerecorded as medleys. They bring with them sunny melodies and his signature stuffing grooves, acerbic and witty lyrics and easy to get lost in rhythms.

Review: Number 80 in Mr. Bongo's Brazil.45 series shines a spotlight on two iconic 80s tracks by Brazilian legend Jorge Ben. The A-side features the infectious groove of 'Curumin Chama Cunhata Que Eu Vou Contar (Todo Dia Era Dia De indio)' from the 1981 Dadiva album and paying tribute to Brazil's Indigenous tribes. On the flip, 'Rio Babilonia' delivers a classic Brazilian-boogie vibe that celebrates life in Rio, its beaches and landmarks. Review: There is a near endless supply of music from Brazilian samba king Jorge Ben. He was a rule breaker back in his day and someone who challenged the conventions of the sound. His albums are in constant high demand and always getting reissued. This one, Samba Esquema Novo, is one of the best and not least because it is opened up by the legendary 'Mas, Que Nada' which will immediately bring sunshine to any setting. The other tunes are just as vibrant with his elastic vocals, delicate guitar work and generally good time vibes.

Review: Mr Bongo's excellent Brazil.45 series digs deeper into the legacy of Jorge Ben, one of Brazil's most famous musical exports and an enduring samba king. Opening up is 'Ma Ma Ma Ma Mae (A Lingua Dos Anjos)' which was originally on his 1980 album Alo Alo, Como Vai? It's a modern sound, with disco inflections and big wind sections, but also some trademark Ben playfulness in the lyrics which speak of flying saucers and angels. O the flip, things slow down and get more steamy and sensuous on 'Dona Culpa' from his Cauby! Cauby!' album of the same year. Two sides, two styles, one irrepressible artist.

Side A presents 'Xica Da Silva,' one of Jorge Ben's most iconic songs from his equally legendary Africa Brazil album which has long been a must-have for any discerning head. This magical MPB track with its laid-back funky samba vibe instantly transports you to the blissful shores of Rio de Janeiro as Ben's vocals tell the story of a historic Brazilian icon. On the flip side, Miriam Makeba delivers a captivating, slowed-down rendition of 'Xica da Silva' which is enriched with strutting guitar, off-beat piano, and hypnotic drums while her powerful voice takes centre stage.

Review: Jorge Ben is a legendary figure in Brazilian music, often called the James Brown of Brazil, and is famous for writing the iconic anthem 'Mas Que Nada' as well as innovating within the samba sound. Amongst many other great successes, he collaborated with singer and guitarist Toquinho on the duet 'Carolina, Carol Bela' on the Brazilian label RGE. This song was famously sampled by DJ Marky and XRS for their drum and bass track 'LK' which became a global hit and topped the UK charts. Joao Donato is a renowned Brazilian jazz and bossa nova pianist who worked with icons like Tom Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, and Gilberto Gil and his track 'A Ra' appeared on his classic 1973 album Quem e quem, which has since been recognised by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 greatest albums of all time. Both of them are real Latin gems.

Review: Mr Bongo's Brazil 45s series gets its rock on with two hairy grooves, both of which have enjoyed the sampler's crafty knives over the years. First up, Tom Ze's "Jimmy Renda-se" rolls with an oily sleazy groove that's peppered by a playful lyrical rhythm that transcends language barriers. Ben's "Take It Easy My Brother Charlie" joins the dots between Samba and very light Rock with all the signatures that made Mr Ben the legend he remains to this day with big vocal harmonies and infectious textures of Brazilian percussion.
