Igaxx - "4.5 SL Trip" (5:29)
Igaxx - "Liquefy" (5:17)
Igaxx - "Ray In Space" (4:13)
Review: Will Hofbauer and Igaxx collaboratively expand the all-too-easily received palettes of electro, techno, garage all in between, and even more yonder, proving to us that the boundary edges of each genre may be blurred without worry. Sharing three groove-bays each on this latest 12", Hofbauer indulges an across-the-pond sojourn, guesting on Japan's Ladybug label, which is managed by the also eminent Igaxx, who occupies the B with equal grip. Hofbauer's 'Cricket', 'Clod' and 'Cocodrilo' bring three endocrine C's to a singly sanguine side, echoing a Hessle Audio-esque experimental dance sensibility while secreting all manner of vital sonic fluids from his ears unto ours; the last track is especially alarming; cursedly toothy, its growly lead zombifying the elsewise rapid mix by way of an enthralled grunt. Igaxx's contributions are relatively supportive and yet mad, moving from the squelches and pipey ascensions of '4 5 SL Trip' to the parabreaks flows of 'Liquefy' and the sloshing cosmo-funk astro-vista that is 'Ray In Space'.

I Like It (Lovers Reggae mix) (4:42)
I Like It (4:30)
Review: Mariko Ide delivers a creative rendition of DeBarge's classic 'I Like It' with her 'Lovers Reggae Mix' on this 7" single. Known for her emotional and transparent voice, Ide transforms the original into a delightful blend of Lovers rock and bossa nova, creating a fresh and breezy vibe that feels both nostalgic and innovative. The 'Lovers Reggae Mix' offers a laid-back, summery groove, while Side-2 retains the essence of the original track with a gentle, soulful twist. Taken from the Cafe Music compilation album, this single is a creative, unique, and brilliantly fun cover that showcases Ide's ability to reimagine familiar tunes in a way that's both respectful and refreshingly original.

Ain't No Sunshine (feat Ken Booth & U-Roy) (4:06)
Border Town (4:22)
Review: 'Ain't No Sunshine' is one of the great soul songs. Originally recorded by Bill Withers, a legendary vocalist who simply walked away from the scene once he had said all he had to say, it has been covered many times. Here it is Yasushi Ide who steps up with a new version that comes featuring Ken Booth & U-Roy on this new 7" from Grand Gallery out of Japan. In original form, it's dubbed out to the max with oodles of echo and dark pads next to some original vocal toasting. 'Border Town' is then a more acoustic sound with gentle guitar strums and slow, persuasive rhythms.

Kool Menthol (5:25)
Quetzacoatl (5:49)
Ramassama (4:15)
Revenge (6:05)
Review: With Il Est Vilaine and his newest EP 'Kool Menthol', Dialect Recordings continue to offer their own brand of sophisticated neuro-mantic cyberpunk electro and French synthwave. Penning a neat audio-dialogue, corresponded between the five-point body that is France and the spitted isle that is Japan, 'Kool Menthol' brings a smattering collision of ideas together into a single four-track swoop. Like the pfft of a well-stubbed cigarette dashed by a replicant protagonist over a modernist balcony, Vilaine brings both uptempo boxout disco and downtemporal ease-up chug to a future nighttime aesthetic. The cultural references don't stop there either, with 'Quetzacoatl' riffing off audio-connotations of the ancient Aztec god.

Review: So what happens when a European post-punk outfit meets an American 'ambient country ensemble'? The answer: A Nanocluster. In fact, three. This being the third. Immersion first met SUSS in September 2021, and the results were mesmerising. Three years on and the impact was no less staggering. Originally landing in September 2024, part tres takes us into the kind of musical places we're used to finding Spiritualized or Mogwai, and even then the references are misleading. For as many times as Nanocluster Vol. 3 sucks us into a thick soup of ambient and atmosphere, inviting us to get lost in opiate cloud formations, it also asks us to jump on board a stream train of rolling and driving rhythms, juggernauts gathering depth and complexity as they forge ahead. A stunning collection of highly evocative and incredible musical instrumentals.

Minimal/Tech House
Survival (8:16)
Redemption (5:49)
Connected (Kevin Tribute mix) (6:47)
A Loophole In Time (5:13)
Review: A compelling journey through minimal and tech house, blending futuristic elements with rich, danceable grooves. Side-1 opens with 'Survival', a track driven by a deep bassline and a sci-fi atmosphere that's both hypnotic and forward-thinking. The title track, 'Redemption', follows with techy, space-infused techno energy, creating an expansive soundscape. Side-2 brings versatility to the forefront. 'Connected (Kevin Tribute mix)' is an undeniable dancefloor weapon, packed with uptempo beats and a bold fusion of house and techno influences. It's a vibrant, big-room-ready highlight. The EP closes with 'A Loophole In Time', a downtempo treasure that transitions into jazzy, lounge-inspired ambiance, offering a smooth, melodic finale perfect for late-night introspection. 'Redemption' EP demonstrates Infinity Plus One's mastery of mood and groove, providing a versatile collection that moves seamlessly from high-energy dancefloor moments to introspective, melodic reflections.

Beyond The Caduca (Hear & Now remix) (8:16)
Beyond The Dulcis (Manu Archeo remix) (13:13)
Review: Pressed on stunning aquamarine vinyl, this 12" delivers a balearic escape through two extended reworks from the brilliant minds behind the recent Aqua Cheta remix EP. Italian producer Infradisco's original compositions are reimagined by Hear & Now and Manu Archeo, resulting in lush, transportive soundscapes perfect for blissful introspection or sun-drenched relaxation. Side-A features 'Beyond The Caduca (Hear & Now Remix)', a guitar-laced journey that glides effortlessly between balearic warmth and gentle motion. The remix expands on the original's dreamy essence, adding layers of melody and depth that ebb and flow like waves against a secluded shoreline. Side-B presents 'Beyond The Dulcis (Manu Archeo Remix)', an exquisite slice of seaside ambience. Soft, serene and filled with healing frequencies, this version unfolds with soothing textures, gentle horns and an atmosphere that feels like a tranquil sunset over endless waters. A masterful pairing of new-age dreamscapes and nostalgia, this release is great for those seeking deep relaxation or sonic escapism where tracks radiate positivity.

Inland Knights - "Figure It Out" (Mark Farina's Mushroom Jazz edit) (4:10)
Review: The Frosted label is back with more brilliance from Inland Knights in the form of this newly remastered version of the classic 'Figure It Out.' It was first put out back in 2013 as the first release on the label and remains a vital tune from the British pair. On the flip, Mark Farina is one of those hallowed producers who always has his own unique sonic signature, most famously under his Mushroom Jazz alias. His edit brings plenty of depth and broken beat lushness with noodling guitar riffs and spoken words making it a backroom gem.

Review: Kaoru Inoue's latest EP continues the journey of his acclaimed long player Dedicated to the Island, which was recently released for Record Store Day 2024. This six-track sequel features a series of self-reworked tracks from the LP, a first-time vinyl release and previously unreleased material as well as a remix by Argentina's SidiRum, who is a leading tastemaker in the tribal and slower house scenes. True to its title, the EP emphasises enhanced rhythmic elements and delivers a blend of organic, left-field electronic sounds. Inoue's talent for crafting atmospheric, innovative sounds will only improve with this superb 12".

Out Of Control (5:53)
Out Of Control (LTJ Xperience remix) (8:12)
Lazise (5:20)
Saocraffen (5:26)
Review: Intrallazzi and Dario Piana have been friends and Milanese scene contemporaries since 1981, when they both fell in love with the distinctive Afro-Cosmic sound of local DJ (and later Piana collaborator) Daniel Baldelli. Since then, they have both made records aplenty under a variety of aliases, but this EP on Leng marks their first joint release. The headline attraction is opener (and lead cut) 'Out of Control', a dubbed-out cosmic disco chugger propelled by echo-laden percussion and a deep, low-slung bassline, smothered in psychedelic synth and guitar sounds. Fellow Italian producer LTJ Experience remixes, offering up a stripped-back and acid-flecked interpretation. Elsewhere, 'Lazise' is a TB-303-sporting cosmic shuffler and 'Saocraffen' is a Baldelli-influenced fusion of Afro-cosmic funk and ethereal Balearic sounds.

Review: Ilija Rudman shows his class here with two edits for the always-on-point Brooklyn Highs label. He turns his hand to an original by Soul Men aka Black Moses and Part 1 will her you lost in a reverie. The meandering, stoned, slow-motion funk licks, gentle drums and wallowing chords all wash over you like a soothing breeze. The Higher Ground mix part II introduces buttery male vocals that drip with eroticism and soul. This one should come with a pregnancy warning.

Volen Sentir & Izhevski - "Altai" (6:55)
Review: Ruvenzori makes the move to vinyl with four artists breaking new ground in the field of organic, spiritual house music. There's a Balearic tint to these harmonious jams, which melt into each other like one extended blend for the terraza of your dreams. 'Uluwatu' features Stan Tone and Izhevski collaborating on a swirling masterpiece with the steady tick of minimal tech house as an undercurrent for ascendant chimes, fluttering guitar licks and vocal murmurations. On 'Ayomi' Talemates joins the pair as they match emotive piano chords with sampled vocal loops, capturing an endearing, eyes-closed vibe in the process.

Review: Few producers in the Nigerian capital, if any, sound like Ibukun Sunday. Marrying West African tones with Western ambient sensibilities and form, on Harmony Balance the juxtaposition between the two is perfectly measured. Not just a nice album title, then. Partly based on the ideas of Swami and Hare Krishna founder A.C. Bhaktivedanta, and particularly his work Bhagavad-Gita (English: As It Is), which focuses on the duality of human nature and existence, according to the notes we have this plays out as a tension between arrogance, envy, and the pursuit of power versus self control, humanity and devotion to others. Less conceptually, the album is just really, really nice, a soothing embrace that sounds mournful, hopeful, optimistic, and reflective all at once.

Sunrise On A New World
Review: Inhmost is an alias of UK-based Simon Huxtable and Future Research Journal Entries: Part I marks his debut album for the peerless US ambient label Past Inside the Present, after albums for stables as illustrious as re:st, Huinali, Tonight's Dream and Spatial. It fits right in with the imprint's vast canon as it's an immersive work described as "a time capsule from a forgotten generation of space travellers." The album follows his collaboration with ASC on The Moons of Saturn and has similarly cosmically-minded themes. Opener 'Visualization of Forever' features calming drones and soft synths, 'Surface of an Untouched Moon' is awash with tranquillity and 'Gravitational Correction' and 'Haunting Silence' capture the fragile boundaries between life and the void. The closing piece, 'Sunrise On A New World' is a final dynamic odyssey that will leave you wanting to start the whole trip again.

Review: Simon Huxtable's alias Inhmost returns to Tonight's Dream Records with a new album, Breaks & Dreams, a continuation of his 2022 release Space & Awareness. Playing on the trend of atmospheric breaks that has risen in popularity over the last decade or so, Huxtable nonetheless pushes the boundaries of the sound, his latest eight offerings providing ample glimpses into the complex structures behind our fascination with this beatified genre. Opener 'Light Haze' is a hypnagogic one, its oceanic feeling marred by a decided swing pattern in the break line itself, suggesting an essential imperfection even in the amniotic returns to oneness so suggested in this kind of music heard elsewhere. The albums steers itself in an ever-more immersive direction by the time it reaches the B-side too, with 'Signs From The East' treating its great washy ambiences like against-the-wind zephyrs against which we cannot fight and to which we must give ourselves over.

Highlights include 'Autumnal Dew,' a picturesque, nature-infused soundscape perfect for stargazing. Its beauty is awe-inspiring and evocative. 'Zodiacal Clouds' is another standout, shimmering with soft, floaty ambient tones that are simply delightful. On Side-2, 'Infinite Pathways' gives us feelings of being hopeful in a serene enviorment, offering a sense of tranquility and calm. Both artists bring their expertise in ambient music, creating a rich palette of soothing tones and textures. This collaboration is an exciting collaboration we hope to see more from. Originally released in Japan in 2013, this newly reissued album blends world music, field recordings, ambient and electronic elements into an immersive and widescreen sound. It opens with the minimal gamelan ambient track 'Malam' followed by the Afro-Brazilian house of 'Selva' which is reminiscent of early Luciano and Villalobos. The album also features electric jazz fusion house, avant-garde tribal breakbeats and Balearic slow house. Closing with the melancholic new age piece 'Healing Force,' it's a timeless delight.

Review: Inquiri and bvdub's superb new collaboration A Life In Setting Suns on the excellent Past Inside The Present label run by zake reflects a deep-rooted connection to the golden era of electronic music in the 90s. Their project mirrors the layered experiences of rave culture and blends some nostalgia for that with distinct musical identities. Inquiri brings the energy of main rooms where trance-induced emotional highs, while bvdub represents the ambient, early morning deep house scenes. Their friendship and collaboration transcend time and geography and so together they explore the timeless, hypnotic soundscapes that defined the era and in doing so create a harmonious fusion of past influences that resonate deeply.

Review: "In 1987, a Japan-only Laserdisc was published by intermission. It showcased one our of works created by renowned German environmental artist NILS-UDO with specially commissioned music by Japanese Kankyo-Ongaku group Interior... Soon after, the world vanished." As a label, WRWTFWW Records have done a stellar job at setting the scene and establishing the perfect atmosphere for Sculpture of Time: Apocalypse. Released on vinyl for the very first time since it was made, almost 40 years ago, it's a lush, tranquil, and reflective slice of earthly ambient that sounds as though someone has just walked out of the jungle and picked up a synthesiser. Review: Stephen Hitchell's debut under his Intrusion moniker follows the dub techno blueprint of his previous project, Echospace's The Coldest Season. While that album drew on Basic Channel's icy soundscapes, The Seduction of Silence incorporates reggae influences particularly through the collaboration with Paul St. Hilaire (aka Tikiman), whose vocals add a unique twist. The album balances intense rhythms and serene moments with tracks like 'Montego Bay' and 'Seduction' demonstrating Hitchell's rhythmic creativity. With a warm, celestial atmosphere, the album's spiritual quality sets it apart from typical dub techno. Remastered here for even better sound, it is a classic that should be added to your dub cannon immediately.

Review: The seeds of composer Rafael Anton Irisarri's latest LP were first planted during his 2016 tour in Italy, months before that Autumn's unexpected presidential election. The linguistic glitch of an innocuous diner in Milan named "il Mito Americano" - meant as "The American Dream" but translated literally to English as "The American Myth" - sparked a series of ideas, both conceptual and musical. Thus was Facadisms born, a mesospheric meditation on the world's many shared fictions and fantasies, essential and inessential. Listening to this ambient record is like standing naked on the outside terrace of a mountain aerie, blustery winds disturbing but not stopping our staring out over the miniature civilisations clustered below. With gnomic titles like 'A Little Grace Is Abundance' and 'Control Your Soul's Desire For Freedom', Irisarri compels the psyche to exward attention; his thickly packed, subliminal walls of ambience act as vessels through which to meditate on the injustices that puncture, and self-sever, the integrity of the American fundamental fantasy. Even going so far as to decry the concept of freedom itself (au contraire), Irisarri states in support of the record: "The impoverished peoples of the Americas have known all along that 'freedom' is a cruel illusion crafted by the elites, akin to Potemkin's fake villages designed to impress Catherine the Great," Irisarri indicates. "Facadisms illustrates a twisted inversion where the rulers deceive their subjects with illusions of safety, democracy, and free speech to create a grotesque mirage of control over their own lives."

Review: Rafael Anton Irisarri's latest work, Facadisms, is an introspective exploration of drone music that encompasses eight atmospheric compositions. Crafted during a tumultuous period marked by social and political upheaval, the album serves as a reflection of contemporary sentiments, blending musicality with thematic discourse. Irisarri primarily utilizes guitars rather than synthesisers, creating an acousmatic texture that permeates the album. While drone elements dominate, identifiable guitar sounds occasionally pierce through, enhancing the overall experience. The collaborative tracks stand out, with contributions from Julia Kent's cello and Hannah Elizabeth Cox's ethereal vocals on 'Control Your Soul's Desire for Freedom', forming a dense, shimmering wall of sound. KMRU's presence on 'Red Moon Tide' introduces oscillating structures and haunting vocalisations, gradually building a riveting soundscape. The concept of Facadisms emerged during Irisarri's 2016 Italian tour, inspired by the stark contrasts of brutalist architecture and the superficiality of Potemkin villages. The album captures a late capitalist lament, echoing the cyclical nature of political disillusionment through repetitive motifs. Each track flows between moments of absence and melancholy, creating a mournful haze infused with cavernous guitar tones. Closing with the collaborative 'Red Moon Tide', the album crescendos into unsettling realms of celestial disquiet and bristling noise, evoking the sensation of a soul's departure into a void. The cover, depicting a decaying structure in La Perla, Puerto Rico, poignantly symbolises the themes of loss and disintegration woven throughout the music.

Review: Rafael Anton Irisarri's Facadisms, presented on striking "clear petrol" vinyl, delves into the depths of drone music through a collection of eight immersive tracks. This album, conceived during a time of significant social and political unrest, highlights contemporary experiences while intertwining musical exploration with profound thematic narratives. Irisarri's use of guitars takes center stage, favoring them over synthesiwers to establish a rich, acousmatic atmosphere throughout the album. While the drone elements predominantly shape the sound, distinct guitar melodies occasionally emerge, adding layers to the listening experience. Collaborative highlights feature prominently, particularly in 'Control Your Soul's Desire for Freedom', where Julia Kent's cello and Hannah Elizabeth Cox's ethereal voice converge to create a lush, enveloping soundscape. KMRU's contribution on 'Red Moon Tide' introduces intricate oscillations and ghostly vocal layers, gradually constructing a compelling sonic journey. The album serves as a poignant commentary on late capitalism, reflecting the repetitive cycles of political disillusionment. Each composition transitions through moments of absence and reflection, crafting a mournful soundscape infused with cavernous guitar textures. As the album culminates, it leads listeners into unsettling territories filled with celestial disturbances and resonant noise, evoking the feeling of a soul's exit into an expansive void. The album cover, showcasing a crumbling structure in La Perla, Puerto Rico, powerfully embodies the themes of loss and decay that permeate the music, making Facadisms a haunting yet deeply resonant experience.

Review: Ken Ishii's 1994 album, Reference to Difference, is a crucial, yet often overlooked, masterpiece in the world of techno, ambient and electronic music from Japan. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of Musicmine Records, this album is now reissued and remastered, available on vinyl with its original track-list for the first time. Born in 1970 in Sapporo, Ishii's journey into electronic music began with arcade games and pioneers like Yellow Magic Orchestra and Kraftwerk. The discovery of Detroit techno in the late 80s shaped his artistic vision, blending with influences from British and American IDM and ambient techno. Reference To Difference is a futuristic blend of ambient atmospheres, techno rhythms, and minimalist compositions. It transports listeners back to the mid-1990s, a golden era for Japan's unique techno culture. This era saw Tokyo's clubs like Maniac Love becoming essential hubs for the underground scene, where Ishii and peers like Susumu Yokota thrived. Ishii and Yokota set benchmarks for Japanese techno with their early works. Ishii's Reference to Difference and Yokota's Acid Mt. Fuji, released simultaneously on June 29, 1994, were pivotal in putting Japan on the global techno map. Martyn Pepperell's new liner notes accompany this reissue, shedding light on Ishii's influence and the album's significance. Rediscover this gem and experience a landmark moment in electronic music history.

Review: Ishmael Ensemble's third album, Rituals, marks a major evolution for the Bristol-based group. While often associated with the 'new UK jazz' scene, their fusion of live instrumentation and electronic elements extends far beyond that label in truth and now this release pushes their sound further than ever. It blends spiritual jazz, dub, experimental, and electronic styles into powerful, swirling soundscapes that work as well on the head as they do heel. The tracks are more notably song-focused and accessible but still deal in a psychedelic mix of textures, colours, and moods. Rituals is a truly boundary-pushing work of great ambition and is this vital group's best work to date.

Review: Bristol's Ishmael Ensemble returns with Visions of Light, an album that nicely shows the evolution of this experimental jazz collective led by producer and saxophonist Pete Cunningham. Following their acclaimed 2019 debut, A State of Flow, this record pushes boundaries further, blending lush, cinematic jazz with Bristol's signature dub and electronic influences. The album begins with the delicate harp glissandos of 'Feather,' drawing the listener into a serene yet deceptive calm. This tranquility is shattered by the high-energy, chaotic 'Wax Werk,' where the music takes on a darker, more intense character. Throughout Visions of Light, Cunningham's saxophone performances are bold and assured, layered over the dynamic contributions of collaborators like guitarist Stephen Mullins, drummer Rory O'Gorman, and synth maestro Jake Spurgeon. Side-2 offers a shift in tone, beginning with the vibrant 'Looking Glass,' featuring enchanting vocals and strings. The nostalgic 'Morning Chorus' and the ethereal 'The Gift' build towards the hopeful resolution of 'January.' This album is deliver's an emotionally resonant journey that transcends traditional jazz boundaries. Visions of Light is both a bold statement and a beacon of hope in challenging times.
