Down In The Basement Vol 4
Abramo & Nestor - "Dig It!" (2:28)
Floyd James & The GTs - "Work That Thang" (2:50)
Curtis Baker & The Bravehearts - "Fried Fish ’n’ Collard Greens" (2:40)
The Native Yinzer - "The Hip Strip" (2:33)
Review: The fourth edition in Original Gravity's Down In The Basement series, which gathers instrumental soul and swing cuts onto worthy 7" slabs, resounding the fervent 1960s decadal gap in which mod reigned supreme. With juleps flowing and kneecaps knocking, Abramo & Nestor bring newfangled electric pianistic swing with 'Dig It!', while a twinned "hit it!" injunction is heard from Floyd James & The GTs on the reissued 'Work That Thang'; James' voice is tubed and speed-delayed to terrific effect, achieving a sprung intonation. Curtis Baker brassifies the bonanza with the lively 'Fried Fish 'n' Collard Greens', while The Native Yinzer's exiting excitation 'The Hip Strip' quilts our ears with a mnemic, down-feathery Hammond-breaks bit.

The Tropical EP (double 7" limited to 300 copies)

Aceedo Domingo - "Corre Riba" (4:25)
Those Guys From Athens - "Na Bola" (3:45)
DJ Laurel - "Peanut Man" (5:08)
Monsieur Van Pratt - "Lose Your Mind" (4:24)
Review: As the title suggests, there's an undeniably humid, sun-kissed and tropical feel to Act of Sedition's latest double-dose of seven-inch re-edits. Accedo Domingo lives up to his name by adding squelchy TB-303 lines and relaxed house beats to a stirring Cape Verde dancefloor jam on "Corre Riba", before Those Guys From Athens deliver a chunky, house-style revision of a turn-of-the-80s MPB classic ("No Bola"). Over on the second "45", DJ Laurel tools up an undeniably funky disco number (the stellar "Peanut Man") before Monsieur Von Pratt makes an already heavy disco-funk number even weightier ("Lose Your Mind").

Don't Break Your Promises (3:11)
Review: This is one of those raw soul sounds that never goes out of fashion, and thankfully neither does it often disappear from availability. It features two r&b classics, the dancefloor-ready 'Last Night' and the soulful 'Don't Break Your Promises', both originally released on the Rainbow label in the UK and a long-time bastion of Aitken's mastery of blending Jamaican and British influences. The opener draws from The Mar-Keys and Georgie Fame, showcasing r&b's imprint on Aitken's style. 'Don't Break Your Promises' is a Milson Luce cover that gained fame in Jamaica before inspiring numerous versions.

The Naturall Band - "There Was" (3:46)
Review: Clap City is dropping some next-level heat right now for those who like their soul super sweet. This particular 7" - which comes with a booklet - is a reissue of Aswads' delightful 'I'm So Proud'. It is very much defined by its glorious male falsetto vocal, which is aided by some acoustic guitars and subtle but dramatic drumming that rises and falls to accompany the emotional roller coaster of the vocal line. Things sped right up for the high-speed funk case that is The Naturall Band's tight and intense 'There Was' on the flip. An absolute must-cop.

With its languid tempo and dreamy atmosphere, captures the essence of summer with its joyful lyrics and hypnotic groove. Ayers' vibraphone melodies intertwine seamlessly with the band's instrumentation, creating a mesmerizing sonic landscape that resonates with listeners. Review: This orange 7" is a miniature monument to one of soul's most quietly influential figures. Roy AyersiLos Angeles-born, jazz-schooled, funk-mindedicrafted 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' not to dazzle but to dissolve. It moves with a drowsy clarity: shimmering synth, near-whispered vocals, and a lazily tumbling bassline that never quite lands. Released during a golden run of Ayers' mid-70s material, the track has since become shorthand for warm-weather introspection, equal parts ease and ache. The instrumental version on the reverse keeps the spirit intact, offering a meditative glide through the same terrain. Limited to 300 copies, this orange pressing pairs a low-lit groove with a deepening sense of legacyiAyers' influence isn't just heard, it's felt in the space he leaves behind.

Everybody Loves The Sunshine (vocal)
Everybody Loves The Sunshine (instrumental)
Review: Few recordings capture the easy intensity of a summer afternoon like 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine'. Released in 1976 and wrapped in slow-drifting synths and soft falsettos, the track became a touchstone not just for Roy Ayers, but for 70s soul and beyond. Born in Los Angeles, Ayers helped define the jazz-funk crossover, placing the vibraphone at the centre of a sound both hazy and sharply detailed. The original vocal take on the A-side still melts under its own warmth; the instrumental on the flip uncovers the careful architecture beneath. Issued here on 7" black wax following Ayers' recent passing, this reissue feels like both a keepsake and a quiet honouring of an artist who shaped a whole way of listening.

Review: Roy Ayers at his most transcendent. 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' is more than a summertime anthemiit's a spiritual moodboard that's shaped jazz-funk, soul, r&b and hip-hop for nearly 50 years. Ayers, born in Los Angeles and raised in its fertile fusion scene, places the vibraphone at the music's heart, coaxing heat-haze tones from sparse chords, synths, and that honeyed chorus. Flip it over and the instrumental version unlocks a deeper layer: stripped of vocals, it becomes a pure groove, drifting and hypnotic. What lingers is the balanceibetween melancholy and bliss, rhythm and release. A rare track that feels entirely unhurried yet quietly radical, now preserved in a limited pressing that looks as golden as it sounds.

It is one of his best-loved tunes as a result and always comes out when the weather warms up. The Kevin Fingier Collective - "Addis Ababa" (3:14)
Review: Fingier is Acid Jazz's new sub label for the multifarious works of Argentinian producer Kevin Fingier. Fingier touches on soul, R&B, boogaloo and raw funk in his music, and that's true once again on this collaboration with Abdoulaye Badiane. Badiane is originally from Senegal but now based in Argentina, and he's been travelling the world for 20 years teaching African music. Now he brings his musical heritage to bear on Fingier's funk, and the fusion is incredibly sweet and soulful. 'Kairo Bancou Moulu' has a 60s touch, while 'Addis Ababa' naturally takes its cues from the incredible legacy of Ethiopian jazz.

Review: Only Roots come through with a classic wedge from Barry Biggs. These pure vibes first came in 1976 and on this package you're also treated to the Clarence Wears guitar piece from the same year, plus a couple of spicy dubs. "Work All Day" is a golden offering with an aloof and soulful vocal that drifts up top like a wispy cloud on a summer's day. Muted chords enrich things and the natty riffs keep things subtly funky. That original Wears guitar piece is a real heart wrencher - the guitar rings out into the sky with oodles of reverb giving it even more poignancy.

There are strong James Brown vibes on this one with The Black Dove' 'I'm Telling' being a deep cut, soul infused roller. The drums are scintillating, the organ stabs bring a churchy feel and the yelling vocals are pure fire. On the flip is a big 60s swinger from Tony From The Bronx. 'Esperanza' hints at the bygone boogaloo era with a classic vocal refrain of love me, love me not. Great stuff.

Kelvin Swaby, lead singer of The Heavy, lends his voice to A-side "It's All There", a low-slung chunk of flash-fried funk-rock rich in Prince-style guitar licks, jaunty bass and loose-limbed drum breaks. On the A-side he joins forces with a trio of musicians to offer up "Peas In An Alternate Universe": a riff on JBs classic "Pass The Peas" that layers extended organ and trombone solos over a groove dominated by crunchy breakbeats and virtuoso bass guitar. Review: Don't let the playful, tongue-in-cheek title put you off; this EP does not contain 'Balearic gabba', should such a thing exist, but rather a quartet of largely dancefloor focused remixes of delightful downtempo cuts from the Hell Yeah! Review: For their latest missive, Rock A Shaka have decided to offer up a new pressing of The Chosen Few's early '70s classic "I Love The Way You Love", a slab of languid, soulful sunshine recorded at a time when reggae as we know it today (rather than rocksteady or ska) was still a nascent musical form. While the original vocal version has featured on a number of the Jamaican band's albums over the years, the accompanying flipside "Version" by producer Prince Tony Robinson AKA The Groove Master has previously been frustratingly hard to find. Review: Kevin Martin's latest offering for his very own imprint Pressure (named after the seminal album of the same name) comes in the form of a collaboration for the ages with the lead bassist from the bands Sleep and Om, Al Cisneros, owing to The Bug's penchant for working just as much with atmospheric black and drone metal bands as with dub artists and MCs. 'Rosin' is a spacey and immersive four-track EP. Cisneros helms the A with two tracks 'Rosin Immersion' and 'Dabby You', the latter of which is particularly heavy on the cavern reverb and infinity-mirror echo. The Bug's additions are newly stooped in heavyweight dub-techno-and-back-to-dub-again, with 'Fathoms' being a particularly apocalyptic track that combines pretty much all of Martin's influences into a singularly colossal image. The B2, known only as '50hz', is an even freakier version of the B1 track 'Venom', which presumably resonates even deeper at the tone of 50Hz.

The Iron Souls - "Still Calling" (3:03)
Review: Frank Raines' Funk Night Records is one of Detroit's finest soul and funk music emporiums right about now, and it's fair to say that the man has kicked-off 2017 in the mightiest of fashions. Coko & The Iron Souls return after a scintillating debut last year, and the former's voice on "My Love Is True" cuts through to the core, especially seeing as it's backed by a beautifully deep, organ-tinged instrumentation from the latter group. The Iron Souls appear alone for the instrumental "Still Calling", a swinging, blissfully trippy funk escapade filled with the right sort of energy for a dancefloor. Strong.

Andy Cooper - "Why You Buggin'" (feat The Allergies) (3:14)
Dr Syntax/Pete Cannon - "Downtime" (The Allergies remix) (3:27)
Review: More all-action fare from the popular Bomb Strikes label, an imprint that has gradually moved away from the party-hearty mash-ups and bootleg remixes on which it made its name. This tidy seven-inch single is notable for the presence of Bristol crew The Allergies. On the A-side they guest on Andy Cooper's "Why You Buggin", a bustling, funk-fuelled fusion of hip-hop and rock that sounds like a wholehearted tribute to the Beastie Boys circa "Licensed To Ill". Over on the flip the West Country party-starters turn remixers, delivering a head nodding, toe-tapping take on Dr Syntax and Pete Canon's hip-hop/funk/ska fusion number "Downtime". Like the A-side, it sounds like a bona fide dancefloor bomb.

Review: A nearly weekly crock of hip-hop remixes ekes through our floodgates on the regular, and we relish the opportunity to review each one. On this new 7" rarity from The Influence Records, the Cowbell Brothers and Jazz Souls take respective reins on remix duties of Jurassic 5's 'Red Hot' on the A and Souls Of Mischief's '93 Til Infinity' on the B-side. Dry, wry and sly acapellas cement a scratchy and vinyl-ready pair of instrumentals.

Review: Hold on tight for this first transmission from new funk label The Influence from US It kicks off with a limited edition blue 7" featuring a pair of tunes that are built on big funky breaks. The Cowbell Brothers open up with 'Too Hot to Handle' which is a super cool joint with smooth bars over leggy drums and nice breaks. Review: Timeless digital roots and dub from The Disciples here featuring the late Jamaican singer Creation Stepper, who i most famously well known for his iconic 70s roots reggae classics. This release includes a fresh take on Stepper's 1978 track, 'Kill Nebuchadnezzar' and it is paired with another vocal gem, 'Ozone Layer,' plus two powerful dub versions. Originally mixed and produced by Russ D in The Disciples' studio in 1991, this music finally saw the light of day in 2011 on the Disciples Vintage label where it quickly sold out. Now back on a great sounding 12", this is a must for roots and dub heads.

Review: Philadelphia's own Fadda Medina and Medina International serve up this mighty fine 10" for all fans of lover's rock. It is Earl Cunningham who kicks things off on 'Frienemy,' a tune that proves his voice is in top shape. Michael Palmer then comes next with the yearning heartache sounds of 'Where Did I Go Wrong,' and Tasha T keeps tugging at the heart strings with Feeling the Pain (Sufferer).' On the flip are further classic gems from Mikey General and JoJo Mac's 'Wahala Problem,' while a heavy and devastating dub shuts things down. Big EP, this.

Mike Perras - "Soulluos" (6:32)
Future Jazz Ensemble - "Over The Rainbow" (4:05)
Takahiro Fuchigami - "Outer Heaven" (5:35)
Review: Stefano De Santis kicks off Ten Lovers' new 'Best Of Various' release with 'Murk'; as the name suggests, this is indeed a dark workout from Rome's finest. The tone is set thereout for a thoroughly varied V/A, blending every curious hallmark from jazzdance, G-funk, Chicago house and progressive. The opener is a muted but no less expansive start, establishing the broken, one-beat-eliding, live-drummy mood that is then heard throughout. Batavia Collective's 'Rearview' thematically harks after an unconscious joy, considering what can only be implied, not stated, by way of a gorgeous, what sounds to be largely live, modal synth squeezer on which the slowdown is the real highlight. Future Jazz Ensemble's 'Over The Rainbow' is by far the most challenging, blurring any woulda-been established lines popularly splitting 'live' and 'electronic' with a reverb-drenched generative fill workout, while closer 'Outer Heaven' from Takahiro Fuchigami, hailing from Fukuoka, rounds things off on a note of Hancockian jive.

Just Like 73 (alternative version) (3:30)
Review: Sheffield rock royalty Def Leppard build momentous hype for their upcoming tour alongside Journey with the release of their brand new single 'Just Like 73'. Written in collaboration with Rage Against The Machine axeman Tom Morello, the banger comes complete with an absurd music video of computer generated de-aged models of the band and a parachuting Morello making their way to Earl's Court to perform for a massive crowd of adoring fans. Elaborating on the experience, the guitar guru stated - "I had a blast rocking a solo on 'Just Like 73.' I played 'Rock of Ages' in my college cover band almost 40 years ago and here Def Leppard are still killing it in stadiums with a brand-new tune that's one of their best." Pressed on limited 7" wax with an alternative version on the flip, the Leppard evidently still have plenty of sugar in the petrol tank.

Review: Northern Soul fans will immediately know that these two tunes are both much-loved bangers from the days of Wigan Pier and the likes. Carla is pressing them up to a new 7" and both sound as good as ever. Jimmy Delphs opens up with 'Dancing A Hole In The World' which is a big stepper with tanging guitars and driving horns all joined by tambourines and raw but soulful vocals. The Four Pros step up on the flip with 'Just Another Girl' which is a quicker jam with banging groves, nice harmonies and plenty of energy for those all-night sessions spinning out your best moves on the floor.

Review: Two rowdy crunk classics reissued once again via Home Hitters. Focusing their efforts on keeping up the noughties' best but not yet forgotten hits in the genre, two new sickwarns top up the repertoire; first up is Fat Joe & Terror Squad's 'Lean Back', which brings a weighty crunk womp to a square command to lean back and rock away, envisaging a fresh new move for the floor-feet to repeat. Then there's the late DMX's 'Party Up', recalling the legendary rapper's icy, brash and woofy flows, which scrub starkly against a juddering array of militant electronic horns.

The Gaff - "High Life" (45 edit) (3:42)
Review: Mountain Records are a new funk label, pushing 45's cut with new funk tinged with a modern production sheen. Two label mainstays decorate each side of this one: for the A, Double A asks 'You Feel Alright?' We certainly do, not least thanks to the artist's heavy locking down of sampled big boom drums, funky grooves and evil laughter. The Gaff meanwhile offers up a breakbeat banger to the altar, letting up on bass for a weird, flauting finish. 7"s collectors, watch out.

King Deadly - "Joshua A Mek Riddim Run" (2:46)
Review: Having already delivered a multi-artist EP of Reggae Dynamite earlier in the year, nostalgia-fired producer Neil Anderson serves up a speedy sequel on his popular Original Gravity label. Toaster Melbourne Douglas kicks things off with the ska-flavoured cheeriness of 'Rudy Skanking on the Moon', before returning later in the EP with slowed-down, rocksteady style reggae fuzziness of 'Rude Boy Don't Fight'. Elsewhere, label regulars (sorry) the Regulators deliver a high-tempo, Hammond-heavy instrumental workout (the excellent 'Caymanas Park Rocket'), while King Deadly layers languid organ solos over a more dub-wise groove on EP standout 'Joshua a Mek Riddim Run'.

Side-1 features the "Right Place Wrong Time" remix, a fresh take on Dr. John's iconic dance track. With updated drum work and a modern twist, this remix is tailor-made for the dance club, adding a hip edge to a timeless tune. On Side-2, "Hand Clapping Song" offers a stripped-down garage jam that blends funk and rock seamlessly. Reminiscent of Sly and the Family Stone, this remix captures the raw energy and infectious rhythm that will get listeners moving. Professor Shorthair's reimaginations make this a great vinyl for funk enthusiasts, offering two tracks that shine both on the turntable and the dancefloor.

Review: Prepare to sink way under the surface with this devilishly deep and minimal new dub cut from Frenk Dublin on the Dutch label Dub Communication. 'Fire Just A Shot' is superbly slow, which gives plenty of room for the rolling drums to sink in and space for the echoing hits to ricochet about the mix. Up top are conscious, anti-war lyrics from Tenor Youthman adding extra meaning to this already heady cut. Flip it over ad you'll get the Om Unit remix which is only slightly more propulsive, and a little busier with the scuffed metal percussion that fills some of the spaces.

Review: Those who pay attention to these things know that Poland's EABS (short for Electro Acoustic Beat Sessions) are one of the hottest jazz combos in the world right now - an accolade earned not only via their incredible playing, but also their willingness to fuse elements of classic Polish and American jazz with hip-hop, soul and funk influences. Here, the fast-rising septet joins forces with 22a regular Tenderlonious (who provides flute and soprano sax solos) for two epic workouts. A-side "Kraksa" is something of an epic; an ever-changing 13-minute jazz journey that brilliantly switches from floor-rocking goodness to horizontal bliss midway through. "Svantetic", meanwhile, wraps fuzzy rock guitars and hammered-out piano riffs around a sweaty groove that just grows in intensity throughout.

Review: The next Boom Shacka Lacka is yet another crucial outing for dub heads. It comes from The Disciples and features the pipes of Earl 16. It features two different tunes in two different forms starting with 'Life Is A Journey', a mid-tempo and fat-bottomed dub with pleading vocals from Earl up top next to some natty keys and horns. A hefty dub version is next up with some signature hissing hi-hats and rumbling bass. The B-side has 'Journey Dub' to sink you into a spotter mind before a different mix of it then brings more raw harmonic leads.
