Gargoyle Records: Aliens On Acid
Cat: AGTE 01. Rel: 07 Dec 20
Alienage - "Mindreader" (4:30)
The Madd Scientist - "Funky Dreamz" (6:38)
DJ Who - "Shitty Samples On Acid (On The Rocks)" (5:37)
WhoDonIt - "House Rhythm" (4:59)
Review: Destination Baltimore 1995, Alienage (AKA Tony Pegas and Don Corrieri) indulged in a little lysergic and sonic experimentation. The results were a series of seriously heady club bangers released on Gargoyle and they still sound fat as hell 25 years later. This latest reissue sees Alienage take the lead with necksnap electro breaks, a sultry vox and buckets of sub before Pegas goes solo with his Madd Scientist alias on the b-boy style 'Funky Dreamz'. Flip for two from Who: the slamming TCR-style breaks of 'Shitty Samples On Acid' and an earlier 90s-style, heavily layered, slightly proggy jam 'House Rhythm'. Keep watching the skies.

Bnag - "Bang Out Of Order" (6:43)
Jack U Late - "Stay" (5:03)
King Wing - "4 Da Hunniez" (6:12)
Will Benson - "Sea Circus" (6:35)
Review: Mechanistic vector lines and cold, hard angles point acute on the latest V/A from Punchline, on which featuring artists don new guises and exchange blows with first-timers. Though our ears aren't trained well enough to be able to tell who is behind each of these smackers, we must say we're special fans of Jack U Late's analogue-jammed 'Stay', whose quickscoped FX and tenderised drums prove a surreal jaunt. King Wing's '4 Da Hunniez' is a comparatively heavy speed garage number garnishing the flip; the track could hardly prepare us for the dactylic 4-step closer 'Sea Circus', whose toothy lasers and julienned beats pack more umami than a packet of burnt crisps.

Buzzin10 - "Deceived"
Sully - "Feel It"
Point B - "Comfort Zone"
Warlock - "Too Late"
Review: Hard to pronounce, even harder to ignore and impossible not to like, Frijsfo continue to delve deeper and deeper into bass-tickled compositions with these four floor-friendly treats. Buzzin10 get sexy with a 4/4 garage cut that lays lush organs over a paranoid backdrop, Sully's "Feel It" takes us right back to the fuzzy two-step soundtrack to the turn of the century, Point B's "Comfort Zone" explores the icy messages of early Metalheadz via a Radioactiveman style bump n' shuffle breakbeat and Warlock closes the show on an awesome Vibert style acid wonk. Beautiful.

Silva Bumpa - "Body Right"
Review: This is a superb various artists' collection that get back to the roots of several sounds from dub and reggae to garage and house. All four gems are guaranteed future classics that tick all the right boxes while also offering up something fresh. Da Elusive Ganjaman opens up with 'Da Return' which has acoustic Spanish guitars and slamming beats, Wodda then offers the silky vocal garage house of 'Don't Mind Me' and Main Phase gets naughty with the filthy bass and sirens of 'Childish.' Last of all, Silva Bumpa's 'Body Right' has pitched up r&b vocals to die for over darker low ends. A top EP with something for all.

Wen - "Signal"
Review: With Wen's debut album Signals due on Keysound soon, the promising London grime producer serves up this tasty limited white label 12" to whet our collective appetites. The B-side sees standout album track "Signal" delivering the producer's signature blend of pirate radio samples, '03-era grime strings and suffocating subs, but it's all about the A-side for us. A refix of Dizzee Rascal's 2004 white label "Strings Hoe", it slows the original right down and steeps it in contemporary atmosphere. Don't sleep on these - they won't last long.

Etch - "Scattah"
Walton - "Homage"
Visionist - "From A Place"
Fresh Paul - "Sunblazed"
Review: Bringing forth fresh talent at a dizzying rate, Dusk & Blackdown's imprint steps up with another sterling four-tracker of forward-thinking bass music that keeps the vibe of dubstep alive just as it points to new avenues. Etch is fearsomely limber on "Scattah", wielding rudest jungle tropes on a half-step lurch with a wonderful injection of horror soundtrack tension that brings all the darkside incantations you could hope for. Walton has a touch more pep in his own collage that drops a snappy garage mentality with a breakbeat roll, while the bass rub cries out for a powerful stack of subs to test. Visionist taps into the exotic climes that the LHF collective explored so adeptly, clashing melodies against each other without hesitation, and Fresh Paul takes the creatively maligned purple sound and runs it into a far more inviting cocktail of emotionally ambiguous and devilishly produced fare.

Don Froth - "Liftin Weights"
Milyoo - "Pancake"
West Norwood Cassette Librar - "What It Is" (MAH VIP)
Knowing Looks - "Cytal Fink"
Review: Having come to the end of its run of ten 10" releases, West Norwood Cassette Library's self-titled imprint starts a new chapter, with the first 12" EP, featuring tracks from some of the label's principal artists. Don Froth's particularly rowdy "Lifting Weights" combines crafty breakbeats, UKF percussion and filtered synths, while Milyoo's "Pancake" provides a washed out combination of tinpot percussion, deep bass and breathy vocal samples. WNCL himself also represents with his "What It Is (MAH VIP), a relatively minimal piece of breakbeat house, and Knowing Looks rounds things off with "Cytal Fink", a stripped back percussive workout recalling the work of Hessle Audio's Joe. As an EP it sums up perfectly why the output of WNCL Recordings is peerless, and as such comes highly recommended.

Review: Increasingly vital garage label Time Is Now keeps on kicking with this superb various artist six tracker. It recalls close associates like Holloway and Interplanetary Criminal as wells enlisting new names. All shades and sodas are covered here with face mangling jams like 'Mercy' covering the darker end of the spectrum and more sweet and fluid jams like 'Uptown' from Ollie Rant bringing plenty of soul, and a healthy dose of sax. Vocal pumpers from Soul Mass Transit and dubbed out minimalism from Holloway complete this most crucial of cuts.

MJ Cole - "Angel Riddim"
Review: Wiley spares some time from amusing all and sundry on Twitter to collaborate with the equally legendary MJ Cole. Released on the latter's Prolific label, "From The Drop" is purported to be the first of many collaborations and bodes well if this is the case, with Wiley on lyrical form, riding a skeletal beat from MJ Cole. Equally impressive is the accompanying remix from L Vis 1990 which sees the Night Slugs don deliver yet another unique remix. A cavernous, almost Basic Channel rhythmic thrust is complemented by rough round the edges beats and liberal spurts of acid. The MJ Drop Dubb on the flip will please those craving a preponderance of bass.

Review: Wall In The Hole kicks off life with a first EP from an unbeknown producer of the same name. The label will be tapping into what some (us) are calling the great dubstep revival with a super minted, one time only pressing of two brilliantly juicy tunes. 'Monia' has bright synths and warm chords over nimble drums and bass that convey real weight, all topped off by a superb r&b vocal sample from the golden era. 'Reckless' on the flip is another one defined by its magnificent vocals sample, but this one has more broken beats and lively bass swings, low end wobble and wooden percussion.

Review: The trend for tech house to take on tough cosmic characteristics and spaced out industrial vibes continues apace here with another great offering from the small but well-formed JISUL label. Tiago Walter is at the buttons for this one and sets off at warp speed on the cinematic and bumping 'Because We Don't Understand'. 'What's More Special' is more balmy and soulful with its arching pads and funky bassline but still compelling drum machine sounds, then 'Turn It Down' has something of a dark garage shuffle and old school rave menace to it. Closing out what is a superbly varied Ep is the breezy West Coast house sound and gorgeous vocal sample of 'Could Be.'

Review: Once again surfacing on Kode 9's imperious label, the All Night EP finds Walton on equally impressive form as last year's debut, replicating the course of his debut with the title track being the most immediate production. "All The Night" is luridly colourful in the thick 8 bit textures that spill out over hyperactive vocal edits and buccaneering drum chops. Pon de flip, "Mallet" does more with steel pans in the opening bars than Jammy xx ever did, before veering off into an eminently satisfying bleep heavy UKF flex, whilst "Kush" drops the tempo down to a heavily saturated, downtrodden shoulder lean.

Walton - "Cool It VIP"

Vibezin - "A Little Higher"
Visionist - "Come In"
Review: Keysound bring together a gaggle of relatively fresh names to throw it down in a rowdy fashion. Walton rips into action under a hail of gunshots, deploying some deadly grime strings over a pulsing UK Funky rhythm. Gremino meanwhile has his own brand of virulent bass music to share, moving scattily through all manner of brutal synth notes before pulling off a shockingly long drop out, only to come back barking the same lurching mantra. Visionist is more dextrous with "Come In", scattering a manic array of vocal samples over a moody backbone. Vibezin rounds things off with possibly the most essential cut, catching a strange soundtrack vibe in the midst of a snapping found-sound beat that sounds as future as it gets right now.

Review: Having performed vocal duties for the likes of SBTRKT and Joker, Jessie Ware steps out with her debut solo effort, co-produced by Julio Bashmore and The Invisible's Dave Okumu. The original version is a brilliant piece of neo-soul and has all the hallmarks of a classic in the making - and sees her make the jump from vocal for hire to a talent in her own right. It's amazing then that Disclosure's remix manages to top it - a slice of club ready neon garage full of clean stabs and whipcrack snares which comes in vocal and dub flavours.

Review: Waxwing pops up on Re-Fix with a crafty, chopped up soulful house approach that will sit right with fans of Max Graef and Felix Lenferink. "Can You" is a summery jam with plenty of sliced and diced vocals and romantic sweeps of melody, while "LongFunk" gets a cheeky shuffle in the mix with splashy drum hits and nifty Rhodes stabs to get bodies popping uncontrollably. "Do It For 'Em" gets even twitchier in the edit, using all kinds of heavily funked up samples to create a killer groove. "Stand It" takes a more classic New Jersey approach without losing that instinct for crafty twirls and curls to spice the mix up.

Space Baguette (6:05)
Review: Fresh UK sounds define Space Tours inaugural release. Both Mitch Wellings and Harry Wills represent a new wave of exciting artists, prepared to take influence from multiple genres to create unique, futuristic, ultra-effective dance floor weaponry.

UK Garage drum programming, electro zaps and minimal vocal stabs can be found hovering over a thick multi-layered acid bass squelch on A1, 'UK Hun'. Harry Wills takes the remix into a deeper, 4/4 driven affair, seasoned delightfully with melodic acid licks and some tidy breakbeat action.

The B side opens with the heavy hitting 'Cold Beats', distinctly primed to create electric scenes from its rubbery bass lines and wild sound palette.

Last but by no means least, 'Space Baguette' soundscapes an epic journey through the stars. Combining classy, deep chords, scintillating synth line goodness and occasional bursts of rude bassline gratification. This one's sure to gain galaxy wide attention from those in the know.

Review: Label boss Mitch Wellings is at the wheel for the second Space Tour outing - a year after the first - and is in fine form here. Opener "Break It Down" is a real party starter that melds garage drums and house soul into a compelling new beat that is clean and crisp, fresh and funky. "90 Steps" gets more deep and balmy, with smooth chords and neon tones wrapping you in melody while the kicking drums stay busy. "All The Stars" keeps up the innovation with knocking woody beats and R&B vocals next to bendy synth lines that sound distinctly UK. "All The Stars (Nemo Vachez 4/4 Sunset dub)" is a cute and curious closer.

"Sarky EP" mixes up the dark and heavy end of the minimal and garage spectrum with more bumping and carefree house sounds. "69in" is an off-kilter house gem, weaving its way through funky, broken beat basslines and jungle-inspired drums that could easily have been a part of Four Hero's sets back in the early 00s. Rob Amboule - "Mindright" (Harry Wills Toasty mix) (5:12)
Review: Up next for the mental health charity label are 4 tracks dedicated to Mind. The VA pays homage to early 2000s nostalgia - with two Garage/Breaks cuts from Harry Wills & Rob Amboule respectively. The two of them alongside Alec Falconer make up 'Phone Traxx', a highly-regarded UKG outfit. Up first is '6 for 5 and feeling fresh', a track that's already been doing the rounds on dancefloors - idyllic for that peak-time club setting. Following that on the A2 is 'Mindright', which contrasts a noteworthy alternative - something you could expect any time, any place, anywhere. On the flip, is a moody remix from Rob - with a bassline that'll wobble any wall in the country. And last but not least, 'Harry's toasty mix', which more than aptly wraps up a release which is arguably the label's best yet. One not to miss.

Holding true to the sound they set out on the Time To Wobble EP last year, they're at it again with Wobble Is Back and the basslines just keep getting fatter. Nasty garage beats, mammoth low end, simple leads - there's nothing else you need to make serious dancefloor heat. The pick of the bunch might well be 'Track 2' here, which has a delicious noirish tint to the DX7 organ sounds to get the dance proper moody. Exemen Steppers....erm, step up and conjure a vortex of electro-like basslines, but the real surprise is DJ Die, the jungle legend who has been absent form the game for a while - his take on the original is, as expected, a grinding mish mash of 160BPM breaks and bass howls. This vinyl features 3 massive tracks from the mixtape, "Wretch Yeah" (with an instrumental), "Used To Be" featuring Scorcher, Ghetto & Mercston and "Itching To See Us Fall" All production is by Roll Deep's Chunky Bizzle and Y Wizz!! Another big release from the True Tiger camp.

Review: Prestige Cuts deliver premium, fully fat-marbled remix cuts of classics to 12" wax. On the A-side of their second single, a hazed-out garage remix of Groove Chronicles' 'Stone Cold' comes to the surface, adding gargantuan reverb to the original vocals and pad mix. The B-side, 'Give You Love', offers a belling-trilling rework of a lesser-known classic. A brilliant new bit from Robin Wylie.

Review: Having been slowly but surely groomed by the label since first emerging some two years ago, Walton now delivers a long-player of his slick, melodic bass music for Hyperdub, sounding right at home in the hinterland Kode9's stable inhabits. There's a degree of electro intent at work on the warm and easy-grooving "Need To Feel" that kicks the album off in earnest, but you're just as likely to get side-tracked into the glossy purple-isms of "Can't U See" with its trappist beats and dreamy undertones. Elsewhere "You & Me" captures a feverish industrial house conundrum full of oddball sampling, while "Memories" splays out its rhythm across a spacious mix of attention-deficit sonics and measured bass stabs. There's a fresh approach at every turn that keeps you on your toes throughout this bright and bold debut album.

Review: Keysound continue to act as a platform for bustling new talent within the realm of contemporary grime and dubstep, with their latest album length project coming from 22 year-old production prodigy Wen. Much like recent Keysound LP alumnus E.M.M.A., Wen is a relative newcomer, with just a few 12? releases last year and an appearance on the Keysound compilation This Is How We Roll to his name. Coming through with a debut album so soon is a bold move then, but there's a confidence to Wen's productions demonstrated throughout the twelve tracks on Signals that keeps you coming back for more. Heavy usage of coded samples of dense London slang and live pirate radio throughout help broadcast the album's themes of "power, locale, identity, intent, inequality, sexuality, gender, diversity, energy", whilst Wen can call on some high profile collaborations with label boss Blackdown and grime legend and "original Don Dada" Riko both featuring.
