Numbers Talk EP
Cat: LIVITY 051. Rel: 10 Nov 21
Techno
  1. Fourth Time (7:29)
  2. High Five (5:02)
  3. Legs Eleven (7:16)
  4. Tough One (6:26)
Review: UK producer Ben Walker aka Beneath is back after a three year hiatus, with his latest coming out on Bristol's Livity Sound. The No Symbols/Mistry Muzik chief brings on the dark subterranean vibes on opening cut 'Fourth Time', while the stirring drums of 'High Five' will entrance you, awash in a haunting and multi-layered atmosphere. Over on the flip, there's some deep dubstep served up on the meditative polyrhythms of 'Legs Eleven' and ending with the low end theory of 'Tough One' which will engulf you in a wall of sound.

Away From The Reign
Cat: 689 YTIVIL. Rel: 29 Apr 20
Experimental/Electronic
  1. Noise Water (4:08)
  2. Away From The Reign (6:20)
  3. Which Way Is Up (4:31)
Review: Livity Sound's acclaimed 'Reverse' series returns with something rather special from a new name, debutant producer Ido Plumes. The label hasn't said much about the artist, but the three tracks here suggest that he or she could be a name to watch in the months and years ahead. For proof, first check the bubbly, undulating creepiness of A-side "Noise Water", where alien-sounding electronic motifs, creepy noises and mind-altering aural textures flutter around a dub-wise bassline and bustling, off-kilter groove, before admiring the sub-heavy snappiness and post-dubstep dancefloor weight of "Away From The Reign". Arguably best of all though is closing cut "Which Way Is Up", a kind of mutant future garage excursion that defies easy categorization.

The Link Up EP
Cat: LIVITY 047. Rel: 26 Apr 21
Bass
  1. 12hrs (4:04)
  2. Three Tribes (3:39)
  3. Bullet Rice (3:42)
  4. The Problem (5:01)
Review: It's a London meets Bristol thing right here as the Tribal Brothers and DJ Polo go toe-to-toe with some beautiful drumcraft. Sitting between kuduro, UK funky and afrobeat, each of these four club-ready cuts are stripped back to the bare rhythm essentials, honing our focus on different elements. On the opener '12hrs' it's the steel drum shimmers. On 'Three Tribes' it's the raw minimalism and human textures while 'Bullet Rise' is all about the big bulging bass tones. Finally 'The Problem' switches to a halftime, creating even more space and mysticism in the mix. It's high time we all linked up.

Review: Arriving some months after the CD version thanks to pressing plant delays, this quadruple vinyl version of Livity Sound's tenth anniversary compilation should be an essential purchase for anyone with even a passing interest in one of British techno's most significant - not to mention unique-sounding - record labels. Made up entirely of previously unreleased material from the Bristol-based imprint's extended family of artists, Molten Mirrors is a genuinely faultless snapshot of contemporary techno trends with that alluring Livity Sound twist. Expect Afro-tinged early morning drowsiness from Azu Twiline; percussive peak-time hypnotism from Forest Drive West, Bruce and Batu; polyrhythmic techno delights courtesy of Pev & Kowton, Bakongo and Simo Cell; and hard-to-pigeonhole experimentalism from Facta and Kouslin.

Review: Since emerging from the post-dubstep scene a decade ago, the Livity Sound label has done much to define a new era of sub-heavy UK techno. Molten Mirrors, the label's 10th anniversary release, is not a retrospective, but rather a snapshot where the label is now: in rude health and delivering some of its most enlightened and bowel-bothering music to date. There's Afro-tinged early morning drowsiness from Azu Twiline; percussive peak-time hypnotism from Forest Drive West, Bruce and Batu; polyrhythmic techno delights courtesy of Bakongo, Pev & Kowton and Simo Cell; hard-to-pigeonhole experimentalism from Facta and Kouslin; and much more besides.
