Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
Analogous
Grandfather Fire
I Feel It In My Forehead
Review: Living up to his most recognised name with every release, LA producer Gifted & Blessed joins the Eglo family with a quite excellent EP under the lesser spotted Abstract Eye moniker. This name was last used by Reyes-Whittaker on the Cool Warm Divine EP for the Valentine Connexion imprint, a release that impressed the Juno review crew despite the fact the Abstract Eye identity was under wraps at the time. The rich analogue techno explorations dipped in glowering warmth and soul that ran through that release are present and correct on Whittaker's Eglo debut, especially the opening track "Analogous". Commencing with a neck snapping percussive flex, it doesn't take long for the track to get consumed by flourishes of rich analogue texture and undercurrents of fuzzed out bass. Alongside this "Grandfather Fire" floats in more pensive strains of machine made funk, gradually unfurling into intricately layered bursts of kaleidoscopic colour that retain a certain restraint throughout. Whittaker reserves the best till last however, with "I Feel It In My Forehead" making full space of the B Side expanse for a gloriously paced sojourn through sumptuous electronic soul.

Where I Belong
Review: Rinse's breakfast show champion makes good on his blossoming relationship with Hyperdub with this exotic and flavoursome debut LP. The first thing you notice is the strength of the vocal contributions, from Fatima on "Just Vybe" to Cornelia's elfin tones on "Pretty Ugly"; the combined effect of over half the tracks featuring a different singer somehow winds up with Pretty Ugly feeling like the best neo-soul album in recent times. DVA's production is wild, like a ranging beast he has no hope of taming. The sheer richness of sounds on offer, mixed with the oddball synths, noises, squiggles and jiggles, combine with the vocals for an utterly fresh album.

All Night
Mallet
Kush
Review: Once again surfacing on Kode 9's imperious label, the All Night EP finds Walton on equally impressive form as last year's debut, replicating the course of his debut with the title track being the most immediate production. "All The Night" is luridly colourful in the thick 8 bit textures that spill out over hyperactive vocal edits and buccaneering drum chops. Pon de flip, "Mallet" does more with steel pans in the opening bars than Jammy xx ever did, before veering off into an eminently satisfying bleep heavy UKF flex, whilst "Kush" drops the tempo down to a heavily saturated, downtrodden shoulder lean.

Clapper
Clapper (Traxman remix)
Review: On a slow and steady rise with a distinctive take on UK Funky, Ill Blu haven't given the people much to chew on with their career so far, but one can only assume the duo have been hunkering down honing their craft as this trumps their last outing on Numbers. "Clapper" is a brawny cut with a nagging mid-range squawk and tasty rolling brushes of snares on a milatiristic tip. Juke's man of the moment Traxman does a hefty chop up of the original with a stomping rave era cut that wouldn't sound out of place on The Prodigy's Experience.

Freak
Review: In an age where hype is ever present, Laurel Halo seems to have the prodigious talent to justify the chatter that surrounds her every release on an increasingly impressive roster of labels. The New York resident already counts crucial US imprints RVNG and Hippos in Tanks in her discography, and this year sees her bewitching sound transplants to some of the most uncompromising UK initiatives. Soon to release an LP for Hyperdub, Halo adopts the King Felix moniker to open proceedings on Liberation Technologies, the newly minted "electronic" sub label of the iconic Mute empire. Arriving in an impressive die cut sleeve, the Spring EP suffuses all manner of musical influences in Halo's own intoxicating style across four "Spring" experimentations whose minute sonic details reveal with a sense of infinity the more you listen.

Strangbrew
Sleet
Cactus
Strangbrew (B Bravo remix)
Review: Strangebrew sees San Francisco based button basher supreme Devonwho return to the All City imprint some two years after his sublime debut release Keepthafunkalive dropped. Sun drenched g-funked out instrumental bliss rules supreme across the three Devonwho productions, with the stripped back rhythms of the title track allowing the heliocentric strains of purple melodics the space to shine bright. Alongside this "Sleet" takes an equally slackened 4/4 beatdown approach, with spaced out keys spread lasciviously over several dizzying layers, whilst "Cactus" adopts an altogether hazier poise. Recent Earnest Endeavours addition B Bravo is a smart choice to add his slick glacial bump-funk boogie to the title track.
