Review: Italian label ReBirth has carved a out a name for itself over the last decade for being fine purveyors of the 'real proper deep stuff'. Emotive, bittersweet and life-affirming grooves that avoid the fads and transients of current house music and instead focus on releasing timeless tracks: the kind that will still be played decades on. Label boss Daniele Contrini presents a bunch of fine remixes of the label's back catalogue by a who's who of the current scene. We were particularly fond of Ron Trent's music & power reprise of Tevo Howard 's "Without Me" featuring the unmistakable vocals of Tracey Thorn, Japanese duo Bocca Grande's "Below My Hands" getting a soulful makeover by Chicago legend Roy Davis Jr, in addition to the always impressive Ewan Jansen doing his thing on Taras Van De Voorde's "1998" and of course current 'it' duo from Tel Aviv Red Axes doing their indie-balearic-disco thing on Robytek's "Luna Africana".

Review: French producer DJ Steaw has tended to do his own thing, self-releasing many 12" singles, with only occasional outings on established imprints such as Local Talk. He's clearly impressed Hot Haus boss Rupert Cogan, though, as he's snapped up this fine collection of peak-time bangers. Steaw begins by peppering a bombastic, revivalist warehouse groove with Sterling Void samples, banging pianos and sweaty synth stabs on "Get Down", before taking things deeper and dreamier on the accompanying Dub mix. Flip for the fabulously muscular "Frogman", which sees our hero take inspiration from both the thumping, basement-bothering productions of Sound Factory-era Junior Vasquez, and the more hypnotic deep house sounds of vintage I:Cube.

  3. Ezrakh-Geomancer (6:14)
Review: When it comes to infusing deep house with elements of jazz, soul and Detroit techno, few have as good a track record as veteran Kiwi producer Recloose. It's perhaps unsurprising, then, that Spirit Knows, his latest EP for pal Will Saul's Aus Music imprint, is pretty darn tasty. The title track, featuring soulful vocalist MaraTK, sits somewhere between his classic work for Planet E (think "Ain't Changin" in particular) and the sort of organic, musically expansive deep house more often associated with soulful house producers such as Phil Asher. The producer's Motor City influences come to the fore on the spacey broken house of "No I Don't", while "Ezrakh-Georomancer" is a spoken word-boasting chunk of New Jersey garage influenced jazz-house smoothness.

Review: Sydney production unit Hugo Gruzman and James Lyell have served their time as Flight Facilities, serving up numerous feel good singles and remixes for the Hype Machine since they first emerged back in 2010 on Bang Gang. Now fully fledged members of the Future Classic cause, Gruzman and Lyell get the opportunity to explore the Flight Facilities sound more extensively with their debut album Down To Earth. It's a worthy title too, as there's a lack of pretence to these fourteen tracks, with the instrumental work from Flight Facilities geared to giving the contributing vocalists the spotlight. The Stee Downes featuring "Hold Me Down" and Owl Eyes collab "Heart Attack" are both highlights and offer some hint at the sonic diversity covered within.

Review: Danny Krivit's fine re-edit of Gary's Gang classic "Let's Lovedance Tonight" first surfaced on Nervous Records back in 2007, and has been something of an in-demand item with disco DJs ever since. This, then, is a more than welcome reissue. The genius of Krivit's scalpel job is that it merely emphasizes the sections of the original that dancefloors want to hear; specifically, the acoustic guitar and organ-heavy groove, killer drum breaks and winding saxophone lines. It's simple but devilishly effective. For those seeking the full vocal experience, the original 1979 12" version is included on the flip.

Review: The general consensus is that We Got It From Here, Thank You 4 Your Service, A Tribe Called Quest's sixth and final album, is something of a triumph, with many critics hailing it as the best full-length of 2016. It's certainly a fine set, full of their trademark musically rich backing tracks (enhanced, this time round, with a greater reliance on live instrumentation), conscious lyrics and distinctive, on-point vocal delivery. Given their legendary status within hip-hop, it's unsurprising to see a string of similarly high profile guests dotted throughout, with Busta Rhymes, Andre 3000, Kayne West, Consequence, Jack White and Elton John (presumably in sampled form) all lending a hand. Even if you're only mildly interested in hip-hop, this should be essential listening.

And with its dreamy cosmic synths, surging vocal and classic snare rolling jungle break, we know whose orders we're going to believe. The fun doesn't stop there as the all star cast continues... Break joins the party for the bone-rattling Headzy tear-up "Big Time Winners", Calibre jumps on the remix tip with a delicate lilting twist on the Riya-fronted "Walk The Same Lines" and DLR taps in for the heads-down, purring-sub stepper "Too Close For Comfort". Heavyweight and high grade, this is an incredible EP.

Review: Moonrise Hill Material co-founder Folamour makes his first appearance on Dublin's All City imprint, in the process delivering one of the most pleasingly positive deep house cuts we've heard for some time. "Shakkei" is marked out by wonderfully flowing piano lines of the kind that once turned "Strings of Life" into an all-time anthem. These combine wonderfully with the producer's loose-but-heavy, drum machine rich groove and near Balearic chord progressions. It's something of a stunner, all told. Elsewhere, Folamour explores deeper and dreamier pastures on "Maybe I Did Burn Ya Place", before reaching for the Roy Ayers style vibraphone, cheeky jazz-funk samples and Andres-esque grooves on "Each Day Is A Frist Day".

Review: Die Orangen, aka aussie producers Dreems & Kris Baha are teaming up for the first time with 2 new unreleased jams under their new alias. Slow and atmospheric, yet punching and grooving Die Orangen managed to meltdown genres into 100bpm 11 minute long trippy trancey bonanza with a substantial amount of jungle psychedelia and heavy drum machines. One Day in Sheperton is a more drum oriented industrial power house tune. With the diggerido and distorted voices coming in towards its 2nd half. This ep includes, as expected from the Malka Tuti crew, with awesome remixes by Italian maestros Fabrizio Mamarella (of Slow Motion records) and Alessandro Adriani (of Mannequin records), Oodandatta Rain is an ep that throws the listener back to the early days of partying in Anjuna beach, when trance was not yet a genre, but a state of mind, and where the "tribal element" could be found in all sorts of bizzarre contexts and remote corners...

Review: As Yse Saint Laur'ant, Ant Plate (one half of ever productive duo Rhythm Plate) takes some time out from crafting refined deep house music to indulge his more wayward tendencies. Amongst the music coming to light in this intriguing diversion from a prolific artist is the fantastic "Just Because...", which comes on like early Wagon Christ material with a modern production sheen. "Space Is Defunct" meanwhile slaps down some chugging 80s flavoured grooves, "2106" reaches for the boogie and "Don't Make Me Think" channels a laid back Balearic mindset. It's a mixed bag of a record, make no mistake. That's also what makes it marvelous.

Review: Dutch producer Ferro has been delivering razor sharp reduced grooves for labels such as Valioso and Kina over the past few years, but now he makes the leap to Lessizmore with an EP that further pushes his highly detailed sound into interesting directions. "Laura" may have a touch rhythmic structure but its overall mood is delicate, with hushed touches of melody lingering between the beats. "The Girl That Fed" is more explicit in its playful nature, riding a strong swing laden with sonic delights from harp strums to sub bass and unidentified audio matter. "The Wrong Wolf" is a faster, tense minimal workout and then "Most Of Her Bread" finishes the EP off with a slice of oddball techno.

Review: Tech-house's own cockney rebel, East End Dubs, has been busy of late. The master of DJ tools and rhythm-focused box jams kept up a steady stream of releases in 2016, delivering a trio of coloured vinyl treats. His first missive of 2017 comes on psychedelically inclined "splatter" pattern vinyl, but doesn't stray far from his usual musical blueprint. On the A-side you'll find "Swing Riddim", where liquid chords and spacey electronics cluster around an immaculately programmed, bass-heavy tech-house groove. B-side "Lexa Groove" is a slightly deeper and more becalmed affair, even if it does boast a more sizeable bassline and chunkier drums.

Review: It's early days for Jakob Panthel and his Faune alias, but he more than steps up to the plate as London label Ornate Music invite him to present his vision for immersive, techno tinged deep house. "5.34 AM" is aptly named, the undulating chord pulse at the heart of the track aiming for the woozy hour of the dance before dawn breaks through. "Reduit" is a more sprightly affair, using similar ingredients but pushing a brighter line in synths amidst the raw drums. "Grindewald" meanwhile heads out into more ambient techno territory with its plush pads and snaking arpeggios, soothing the feisty club-ready energy of the previous two tracks.

Review: The mysterious entity that is NYC Loft Trax returns with more 'unreleased' rarities from the heyday of the Big Apple; think The Red Zone or Nu Groove on these wicked, raw and jackin' hardware jams. The only living proof we have gathered thus far is that Dubrazil is actually the legendary Chicagoan Jordan Fields; his contribution "Sunshine In My Life" features neon lit synths guiding dusty vintage drums. Also, the sunny and emotive groove of Pascal Cordoba's "Comblnaca" (remixed by the one and only DJ Freestyle) was originally released in 2007: but this is a vinyl debut. Other than that, Bonjour's deep and sexy "Fondant" is a late night basement jam made for some serious hands in the air moments; those keys! The smooth and spiritual Afro vibe of Blackdub's "Melodies of Dub" calls to mind masters like Joe Claussell or Ron Trent.

The duo of Vasily Stepanov and Vlad Dobrovolski reportedly find their unique sound by experimenting with cassette manipulation, using magnets to alter their source material before sticking everything together in a hazy, wide-reaching whole. You can tangibly sense the myriad places these sounds originally came from before melding into a thoroughly psychedelic new form on this most engrossing of listens. As ever, that Udacha penchant for otherworldly tones shines through plenty on Super Sounds II, making for a natural addition to the label's ever-increasing oeuvre.

Here it gets some remixes, firstly by Diynamic Records boss Solumun who'll have you boppin' away happily like a punter on his infamous Boiler Room Tulum session with his adrenalised rendition. There's a tougher side to Flugel that we haven't heard in a while on opening track "Too Hot To Sleep", a bleeping and cyclical techno tool that's not quite as aggressive as his Acid Jesus or Alter Ego material, but equally impressive. It's more the Flugel we know on "Troubled Mind: this deep and atmospheric slow burner merges the organic and synthetic superbly, where soothing bell tones merge with dusty electronics. On the flip, we have the sublime "Work & TV" hypnotizing you into submission on this minimal composition full of whirling melodies and stripped drums awash in deep trails of reverb.

Review: Berlin based house hero Shir Khan serves up another volume in his acclaimed Black Jukebox series and we're already up to volume seventeen which is mighty impressive! On this edition we have Martin Lewis, who despite his name is actually a German dude who has released on labels like Freebase, Holic Trax and his own Profound imprint: which he founded back in 2008. He looks after things groove-wise on the A side with the funky and lo-slung hip-hop inspired deepness (dopeness!) of "Lifted" while "Feel Good" is a nice and reliable slo-mo disco edit which might sound familiar to some of you. On the flip is self described 'medicine man with shamanic powers' Aussteiger with the tough, dusted down and absolutely rolling deep house jam "Taperock" which will appeal to fans of the Robsoul Recordings sound while "Baracoa" offers up more of the same and the hypnotic melody it has happening throughout is pure magic.

This is razor sharp club music surely crafted by someone with experience, as the muscular thrust of "Track 1" suggests. It's high grade dance music for DJs and party people, plain and simple.

  6. Got Ur Number (Chips N Chittlins) (6:07)
  7. Shake House (Opolopo remix) (5:13)
  8. Dial 81 - "Luminous Stasis" (feat Paul Randolph) (5:01)
Review: Destination Detroit as Randolph brings together a series of collaborations, remixes and productions with European producers. Dorfmeister kicks off with a deeply dubby house twist on "Heavy" while Austria's Rodney Hunter amps up the jazz on "No Gonna Let You". Wahoo's "Don't Take It Personal" glides us back to 2007 in street soul shoes while Kirk brings us back to the future in the dreamiest of states. Other sublime highlights include Opolopo's Sneak-style house chugs on "Shake House" and Dial 81's sludgy slo-mo buzzes and shuffles on "Luminous State". A fine collection and great showcase of Randolph's broad range and versatility.

  1. Airto Moreira - "Toque De Cuica" (4:01)
  2. Erlon Chaves E Sua Banda Venemo - "Cosa Nostra" (4:00)
Review: Rare Brazil have brought us some brilliant bossanova compilations (with some steamy cover art!) over the last twenty odd years and can claim to be a definite authority on obscure Brazilian music: no argument there! Now they delve into much needed re-issues with Toque De Cuica which features two obscure gems, for the heads. First up the legendary Brazilian jazz drummer Airto Moreira serves up the feelgood disco vibes of "Toque De Cuica", while on the flip there's Erlon Chaves E Sua Banda Venemo with the sultry Latin soul-funk of "Cosa Nostra" coming off like a South American James Brown and band: you've got to hear this.

Review: Hungarian minimal hero Nami is back following up some great releases of late on Eastenderz, Neoconcepto and of course his eponymous imprint which now presents the Hip Pocket EP. Starting off in fine form with the title track, a funked up and bumpy microhouse groove that will appeal to fans of Minibar or Musique Risquee; its subtle breaks offering an even nicer touch overall. On the flip its a much deeper and sultry affair on the smooth "Radio Delta" with its jazzy aesthetics and lo-slung sensibilities.

Review: After Hamid kicked off the H+ label last year he returns with an intriguing double pack that draws on a wide variety of collaborators to turn out some truly innovative leftfield house music sounds. There's an overarching theme of micro house hovering around Methods For The Madness Vol 1, but it's far from run of the mill stuff. The opening cut featuring Josh Tweek is a sparkling, swinging affair that piles on the funk and the delirious effects, while Jesse Morrison's own turn on the closing track winds up in a haunting, abstract slice of refined reduction.

Review: This is the unique sound of respected experimentalist (Florian Meyer AKA Don't DJ) colliding with psy-trance veteran Volker Wiesmann AKA Paraklang) via an interest in the more unchartered polyrhythmic territories. "Chuwangk Kyuh Hay" is the most tribal and floor-focused of the collection with its rounded drums ricocheting and playing off each other. "N Bun Kan Kan" takes a slight side-step to the left of the dance with its dizzying layers of percussion while "Gonyungk Wadt" is a complete flip into sound design territory. Prepare for audio illusions.

Review: Esteemed composer Piero Umiliani released scores of music in his lifetime from the famous to the obscure, but his forays into jazz continue to be a delight for diggers the world over. Here Galaxy present Storia E Prehistoria, recorded under his alias Rovi and originally released in 1972. It's a stirring collection of music that touches on soundtrack themes throughout, capturing the sound of the era impeccably while sporting Umiliani's inimitable touch in the same breath. The album is full of sumptuous orchestrations of brass, keys, harp and more besides, each piece loaded with romance and cool as could only come from Italy.

Review: Although Henrik Schwarz has kept himself busy in recent years, it's been a while since he released a full-throttle dancefloor workout. This debut appearance on Gerd Janson's Running Back label - the German producer's first solo single 2013 - is arguably his most forthright and floor-friendly missive since the turn of the decade. "Not Only You" is a thumping techno stomper, where ragged, mutant, repetitive lead lines are propelled forwards by some seriously good drum machine programming. Flipside "Not You Also" offers a slightly more eccentric riff on the same blueprint, with Schwarz adding some eccentric spoken word segments and a couple of bold synth fills.

Review: The last time we heard from Nick Hoppner, he was collaborating with Japanese veteran Gonno. Here he returns to Ostgut Ton with his first solo EP since the release of the Folk album in 2015. He begins with A-side "Box Drop", a typically Berlin-style techno shuffler full of dubbed-out riffs, relentless cymbal hits and subtle melodic variations. It's muscular and full-throttle, but with enough wavy elements to work at home as well as in the club. On the flip you'll find the Motor City positivity of "Still" - all life-affirming melody lines, colourful chords and gentle acid lines - and the grandiose, soundscape techno thrills of the equally melodious "Out of Sight".
