Review: Rewind to 2014: Mr Bird and Greg Blackman released an immaculate LP on BBE. As well received as it was, however, it didn't get the vinyl justice it deserves. Until now... "Where Did The Party Go?", one of the albums many highlights, gets a limited pressing with two beautiful updates from the don Beedle. Really relishing Greg's falsettos and the swooning horns, Ashley seduces us with his slow and low North Street remix then casually undresses us with raw organ and percussion on the stripped back remix. Smouldering.

Review: Parisian 'emotional house' producer Flabiare is a stalwart of local imprint D.K.O where he's thrown down several fine releases of the deeper and dusty house music variety. Now for South Street out of the UK who have previously brought us great EPs by Yaki Incipient and Urulu. Kerri Chandler vibes abound for energetic opener "Midsummer Blues" while "Tell Me About It" finishes out the A side in style too with its evocative early '90s NYC style likewise. On the flip "Prime Numbers" (Parlez Vous Francais 2015 rework) serves up some rusty and dusted down deepness; its off kilter rhythm programming a fine touch and "Ecoude" closing out this fine EP in style with those neon lit synths and pitched down groove working a treat.

Review: After making an intriguing start with a 12" from Hephaestus last year, the god-minded Olympos label returns with Apollo at the helm. Quite whether this music is in fact the handiwork of mythical deities remains to be seen, but it does result in some fantastic techno. "Ena" is a proper trance-inducing workout full of undulating synths and nagging percussive threads, while "Dyo" goes even further into intricate beat patterns and spooky atmospherics. "Tria" opens the sound out into a blissful trip through ambient techno with a backbone, while "Tessera" places more emphasis on mellow chord pulses to stake its own claim on this 12" of advanced techno explorations.

Review: For the first release on their Ghetto Disco imprint, Edinburgh-based daughter-and-father duo Natasha and Dennis Probert has turned to the cheekily named Serge Gamesbourg. Having already impressed via contributions to Rahaan's Street Edits series, monsieur Gamesbourg is sure to enhance his reputation further with these two reworks. "The Cool, The Hip & The Square" sees him reworking the track that initially inspired the label, extending, chopping and rearranging the killer disco original in all the right places. Arguably even better, though, is the B-side sensuality of "Bring Them Back Together", a glassy-eyed rework of a Philly soul gem that's as sultry as the come.

Review: Nearing its tenth anniversary, and making us feel like 2008 was just yesterday, it's easy to forget just how much the Mannequin label has contributed over the last ten or so years. This album by Survival, from 2012, was a prime example of the imprint spreading its cold waves good and proper, and it's no wonder that the Holodeck label has decided to reissue it in all its glory. What's more, the record isn't just an essential must have for any fan of dark, brooding stoner rock, it's also a glorious specimen of modern post punk music; too often we've faced with expensive reissues from the 80s, but at least here we have the comfort of knowing that good music is still very much alive. The self-titled LP travels from electronica through to ambient and glitchy lo-fi with utter ease, but we're even more fascinated by its deconstructed sonics and rough, grainy shards of noises. Tunes like "Floating Cube" will no doubt please the bass heads looking for some rarity and glam in their sets, while "Hourglass" offers some wavy techno vibes, and others like "Shunting Yard" are brewed of the finest cocktail of industrial noise and climatic melodies. Heavily tipped!

  4. Ekman - "Philopannyx" (7:40)
Review: Berlin residents Kuno and Spaceinvasion have been deploying some sublimely evil cuts on their Terminal Operations label since they kicked the damn project off, and things look like they're taking an even nastier turn thanks to this collaborative release between Fallbeil and Holland's Ekman. The latter has been very active over the last few years, and we particularly liked the man's releases for Will Bankhead's TTT so this feels like the right sort of imprint for the producer to be branching out to next. Fallbeil kicks off the A-side with two devilish electro cuts, steeped in a deep distortion that successfully renders them utterly noxious on the loudspeakers, and ready for some pulverising action on the floor. Over on the flip, Ekman's "Nemein" spews 303-licked acid all over the shop, rounded off by cleverly detuned cowbells and toms, whereas "Philopannyx" strips the distortion back to make room for an eerie, subtly acid jam from the depths of the inferno. Bad.

Review: Alexander Pietnev aka Ponty Mython, is originally from Russia but is currently settled in Vilnius, Lithuania. He had his very first release in 2012 on Beats Delivery and gave a solid impression of what was to come. He went on with outings on Tusk Wax, Arma, Dirt Crew and Quintessentials. He inaugurates Burnin Music here with the cheeky indie house of "Black Magic" which calls to mind recent work by Moscoman or Red Axes. The blasphemy continues on the A side with the lo-fi house of "God Bless Atheism". The driving deep groove on the flip entitled "Secret Sunbath" has some summery and tropical retro vibes to balance out its tough Robert Hood style bass loop before he closes out the EP nicely with the esoteric afro house jam "Hidden Object".

Review: Many hardened disco diggers have long dreamed of finding a copy of Karriem's super-sweet 1979 single, "I Love You". It has a reputation for being one of the harder disco records to find, with copies of the original Pashlo Records release changing hands for serious sums online. Happily, Favorite Recordings has gone to the trouble of licensing it, offering this re-issue in replica artwork (complete with lyrics on the back sleeve). "I Love You" itself is near perfect, with Karriem's fine vocals and killer electric piano solos riding a loose disco groove full of clipped guitars and rich percussion. Like the original 12", this version boasts the superior extended mix, and a tighter edited version.

Review: Despite Bruno 'Patchworks' Hovart boasting a discography packed to the rafters with successful forays into all sorts of vintage dancefloor styles, many were still surprised at the brilliance of the first Voilaaa album, On Te L'avait Dit. This follow-up is equally as impressive, and features 13 more trips into classic Afro-disco and tropical disco territory. With Clavinets, punchy horns, live percussion and Afrobeat bass to the fore, Hovart and his many collaborators - including a number of French vocalists with African heritage - variously pay tribute to all sorts of late '70s and early '80s dancefloor fusion sounds. The album includes tons of club-ready excursions, including the righteous "Problems", disco-tastic "Kemtane" and sweaty, high octane "Mbele".

Review: Since making his debut in 2014, Bontan has made a serious impression. This first outing on Hot Creations follows much-played material on Madtech, Circus, Toolroom, Cajual and Suara. "The First Time" is retro-futurist in feel, featuring as it does a combination of undulating, acid-style motifs, jacking Chicago-style drum fills, bouncy tech-house beats and a drowsy, seemingly sampled spoken word vocal. Flipside "Personal Question" takes a similar sonic approach, utilizing a bolder, Adonis style bassline, nagging bleep noises, and delay-laden vocal snippets to conjure a sweaty, late night mood. Both tracks are solid rather than sensational, but undoubtedly have the right blend of ingredients to cause major dancefloor devastation.

Review: Lauer and Gerd Janson aka Tuff City kids emerged with "Tell Me" featuring Hot Chip's Joe Goddard on vocals back in late 2016 on Permanent Vacation, but now it's time for the remixes and they're pretty sweet on this EP; if we do say so ourselves. Hamburg's finest Tensnake is in fine form as always with his rendtion: a tropical nu-disco explosion! Joe Goddard himself chips in too with a makeover of the track; his one getting some emotive Kompakt vibes going on full of rich and life affirming synths leads happening. After all, he has recently collaboarated with Michael Mayer. Finally on the flip they save the best for last with the mighty Roman Fluegel delivering the "Happy Gerdy remix" which very uplifting indeed.

Local hero Young Marco delivers the bittersweet and emotive "The Best I Could Do (With What I Had)"which is certainly raw yet absolutely soulful. There's naturally plenty to gets heads salivating, from the eccentric European electrofunk of Danny Boy's "Discomix" and the blissful pulse of Ghostwriters cheery synth-out "Swizzle", to the delay-laden, dubbed-out drum machine beats and tribal chants of "200 FA (Extended Mix)" by The Force Dimension. Elsewhere, check out the ultra-positive Balearic loveliness of Personal FX's "Objects In Mirrors" and the rubbery, undulating breeziness of Wolf Muller's "Pfad Des Windes". Simply essential.

Review: The development of Aussie Tornado Wallace from a promising deep house producer to a masterful maker of Balearic beats has been a joy to behold. Since first hooking up with Beats In Space and the similarly inclined ESP Institute last year, he's begun to develop a trademark sound that's warm, humid and musically rich. He's still capable of laying down chunky dancefloor rhythms, though, as the hypnotic new age house bumper "Soft Light" - the flipside of this second outing for Lovefingers' acclaimed imprint - so deftly proves. Really, though, it's when he gets more adventurous - such as on the wonderfully evocative Jonny Nash collaboration "Time of Nectar" and decidedly tropical lead cut "Circadia" - that he really comes into his own. Highly recommended.

Fusing catchy pop-rock workouts with truly madcap moments and glued together by lots and lots of synths, it's little wonder that the Emotional Rescue gang were enamoured with the release and resolved to put together a reissue. There is some really adventurous production going on here, with "Juegos Confusos" being particularly flamboyant and "Uranio Enriquecido" ramping up the oddball keys and splashy effects. Meanwhile the likes of "Sensacion Melancolica" nail that slow and seductive synthwave sound impeccably.

Suns Of Arqa were equally enamoured with fusing the haunting qualities of Middle Eastern music with other styles, in their own case dub, and so their selection to remix a whole host of Muslimgauze tracks made perfect sense. Now the engrossing and otherworldly jaunt through distant lands enjoys a plush new vinyl release on which to truly enjoy the mixture of soothing and savage sounds.

Aside from a few remix singles, they've not released anything of note since acclaimed 2014 full-length Nabuma Rubberband. While that set was apparently something of a struggle to complete, Season High - their fifth album in total - feels spontaneous and life affirming. With James Ford handling production duties, the album offers a gleeful romp through hook-laden, high quality synth pop with nods to the likes of Prince, Pet Shop Boys and Janet Jackson along the way. Of course, there are a few chunks of skewed electronica thrown in to mix things up, but these are nowhere near as thrilling as their unashamed pop works.

Review: Amsterdam label Music from Memory are steadily becoming the most interesting archivally minded operation out there, with this retrospective of Mallorcan guitarist Joan Bibiloni following essential issues of work by Gigi Masin and Leon Lowman. On El Sur, MFM founders Tako Reyenga, Abel Nagenast and Jamie Tiller cast their gaze over Bibiloni's work from the more experimental era of his long career (he first released a single in 1967) selecting tracks from a six album run which commenced with the album Una Vida Llarga I Tranquila, originally released in 1984. It was during this time that Bibiloni began to compose with the assistance of tape loops, drum computers and synthesisers and these primitive experiments make for compelling listening across the ten tracks on El Sur.

Review: The vinyl has barely cooled on the second installment of Tolouse Low Trax's Decades series, and the producer has already readied a third and final installment. As with previous volumes, it's a rich and varied affair, with the Salon Des Amateurs resident variously turning his hand to mildly foreboding electronica (the ghostly tribal vocals and hip-hop techno electronic beats of "E-Sadam"), lo-fi electronic dub ("Marina Dub"), krautrock inspired hypnotism ("Boutique Beast"), industrial influenced murkiness ("Metal Tent Wicked"), and Kraftwerk style, proto-techno throb (the standout "Tazza"). In other words, it's business as usual from one of electronic music's most talented producers.

Review: The name Francisco Tenorio Cerqueira Junior, or simply Tenorio Jr, has always been clouded in mystery. Not only did the renowned Brazilian pianist pass away under dubious circumstances in Argentina back in 1976, but he also put out a surprisingly limited number of albums throughout his short-lived career. Having said that, these are all very valid reasons for why his music remains among the most coveted of items in the jazz scene. Embalo is his only album under the Tenorio Jr name, but its 1964 release is still as fresh today as it was back in a cloud of psych-driven hedonism that permeated all arts scenes back then. Fun and uplifting throughout, the album will satisfy both the jazz traditionalists and those with a slightly more left field taste. The percussion driving the arrangements isn't exactly something to ignore either, with its typical South American flair infusing sublimely into Tenorio's own excellence behind the keyboard. This is an important album which has helped to define a whole generation of later Brazilian musicians, and we recommend you to make it part of your life. It's an essential piece of history.

Review: Amongst those who dig for interesting, dancefloor-friendly electronic music from the early 1980s, Jacob Desvarieux's eponymous 1983 debut album is highly rated. It brilliantly joined the dots between zouk, boogie and beatbox electro, with all manner of other influences - reggae, most famously - being stirred into the producer's melting pot. Here, Endless Flight have licensed two of those tracks - the reggae-boogie brilliance of "Emotion", which includes subtle nods to a couple of disco classics, and the electro-zouk madness of "Sweet Florence" - and pressed them on a weighty 12" single. The latter track is given the re-edit treatment by Kuniyuki, who makes more of the layered guitar and organ solos, the original's wavy female vocals, and the killer original electro groove.

Review: Spiral Deluxe is an improvised electronic jazz quartet consisting of the legendary Jeff Mills on machines, with Underground Resistance alumnus Gerald Mitchell on keyboards, Yumiko Ohno on Moog synthesizer, and Kenji "Jino" Hino on bass guitar and vocals. On the A side we have the fantastic voyage that is "Cosmos" which over its nearly 18 minute duration takes in The Wizard's trademark drum rolls, a bit of acid, a nice serving of funk and even some gospel style pianos towards the end. It's a brilliant live recording we must say. On the flip are the deep and emotive soul jams "Four Ways Of Knowing" and "Without A Doubt". The Tathata EP is pressed on vinyl from high resolution 32bit digital files and will launch a new range of vinyl releases named the Axis Audiophile Series.

Review: While they may have mined many of their classic early releases, it's taken until now for the resurgent Vibraphone crew to return to their very first offering form way back in 1992. 49th Floor was a pseudonym of Stefano Curti, one of the mainstays of the label, and Night Passage was the classic record that started it all off. The whole EP has been given the remastering treatment and sounds fresher than ever, with "Fast City" in particular shining bright with its urgent swing, luscious bassline and sprightly keys. This is house music in its purest form, often imitated but never replicated.

Review: Under the now familiar Mannmademusic alias, Ian Mann has delivered fine material for Shadeleaf, Lumberjacks In Hell and Glenview. Here he makes his first appearance on fast-rising Bristol disco-house imprint Boogie Cafe. Opener "Sandman" is superb; a kind of colossally beefed up edit that underpins the soulful, party-starting source material with bustling new beats and bass. In contrast, "Get Up (Remix)" is a dustier and woozier, jazz-flecked deep house affair of the sort we'd expect to hear from Detroit producers such as Andres. Flip for the debut of previously unheard producer Jank. "Doin' It" is a chugging, LTJ style edit of a super-sweet soul cut rich in undulating bass and twinkling keys. Fittingly, Mannmademusic provides a jauntier, deep house flavoured remix.

Review: Dub techno stalwarts Echospace are celebrating a decade as a duo this year. To mark the anniversary, they've decided to put out their first official live album. The show was recorded in May 2013 at Ghost In The Sound, Detroit, and sees Rod Modell and Steven Hitchell at their hazy, intoxicating best. It's pure hypnotic dub techno, laden with effects, white noise and manipulated field recordings. Unlike some of their epic sets, which revolve around subtle variations on the same theme, Ghost In The Sound sees them slowly move through the gears, delivering distinctive, dub-fuelled techno tracks that rise and fall in rhythmic and percussive intensity throughout.

Review: France's Varhat is back after some great tracks on Crocus and Aku but who can forget that killer edit of Stablo he did last year. This guy's is on a roll and one to watch, which says a lot considering the amount of talent coming of Paris at the moment. This time it's for Ukranian wunderkind Mulen's imprint and it's a as deep and as rolling as you'd expect. The whole EP is great as a whole but really shines on "Track 2 " with its pitched down acid bassline and those sweet immersive pads. "Track 3" is properly deep with its smooth bassline, tight rhythm and those swirling and hypnotic synths working a treat.

Review: Next up on Tomorrow Is Now, Kid! is an EP from Rutilance Recordings owner, DJ Steaw. The French artist crafted four sturdy tracks on this fresh EP. It is a perfect blend between Chicago and New York House, with a big splash of Acid throughout the disc. The hypnotising percussion and grimy sounds take you to new, unforeseen places... Keywords for best describing this 12" are, beyond any doubt, deep and vigorous. Enjoy these four definite killers in the club.
