  3. Chimicalissimo (dub mix) (8:02)
Review: Considered the anti-hero of disco music, Argoman literally means 'lazy man', however it's also a combination of three Italian producer's names who started the project about one year ago. Any guesses who they might be? We will leave that to you! The track "Chimicalissimo" is new wave Italo disco at its finest, featuring peak-time dancefloor energy completely produced with analogue synths and drum machines. Gerd Jason and Fabrizio Mammarella team up again as Black Spuma and their remix turns the track into a slow burning disco monster. The dub version gives more space to a melancholic piano melody that culminates through analogue arpeggios to an unstoppable build.

A hugely creative and radical decade where art fused expressionism, poetry and spirituality, from the fiery jazz of Carlos Garnett, the raw vocal soul Oneness Of JuJu and of course the iconic sounds and ideas from Roy Ayers and Gil Scott Heron this marks the start of conscious black music.

Review: This limited edition new reissue series from Mukatsuku singles only label focuses on timeless tracks have not yet made it on to 7 inch to date. Both sides are indeed heavy and no doubt you have experienced some of them on a long player. Side one is from the 1975 Fantasy Records masterpiece Vibes of Truth from Three Pieces and "Self Dealin'". A nice little slice of funky goodness, strings and all: it's nice to see this tune on the format. The flip, is another jazz funk classic that has always gotten maximum spins on the LP. Johnny Hammond Smith's "Tell Me What To Do" from the brilliant Gears LP, a record that has definitely not been overlooked. This full length gave us "Shifting Gears", "Los Conquistadores Chocolates", "Can't We Smile", and more. Originally on Milestone, it has been a classic for years so a welcome release for todays 45 market. Review: Supreme musica popular Brasileira and bossa-nova vibes here on two tracks from Mr Bongo's leading Brazilian 45's lady, Claudia. "Deixa o Morro Cantar" features on Claudia's very first 7", released in 1965 by RGE Brazil. Her version of "Mas Que Nada" is said to be more of a jazzy/folk-funk take on the Ben classic. A relatively recent discovery made during the label's last trip to Brazil, Maria das Gracas Rallo was born in 1946 in Rio de Janeiro. She has become the most awarded singer outside of her home country and was most popular internationally in 1982 with the song "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" from the musical Evita. Moreover, she has recorded over twenty albums and has amassed huge record sales throughout her successful career.

Review: Chillwave doyen Washed Out returns with his fourth artist album Mister Mellow. Taking off where 2013's Paracosm left us, the overall tone and texture is woozy, warm but barbed with occasional noxious fumes of self-frustration and ennui. Writhing amid sludgy slo-mo soul ("Million Miles Away"), smoky breaks ("Burn Out Blues") trippy, sliding string instrumentals ("Instant Calm") sandy-toed house music ("Hard To Say Goodbye", "Get Lost"), Washed Out brings his seemingly disparate sounds and elements together his far-away sound, introspection and breath-taking harmonies.

Review: Previously on Distant Hawaii, UK producer Tom Harris aka Hidden Spheres appears now on Lobster Theremin with four servings of his soothing, late night house. "It Ain't Easy" is a deep, jazzy and loungey joint, reminiscent of early Atjazz, as is the sexy and evocative "IshOnSax" featuring 'some of the most contagious saxophone ever laid to wax' courtesy of Ishmael. The B-side features the Moodymann-ish "The Feels", a raw house number full of heart warming pads, dusty rhythms and soulful vocals. Closing out the release is the melting pot of swirling sounds, field recordings and playful drum programming on "It's Gonna Last".

Review: As Summer peaks, Berlin clubbing institution Watergate brings you the brand new series where standout tracks from their discography are remixed and by some of their favourite artists. Kicking off the first instalment we have Matthias Meyer and Jimi Jules stepping up to deliver their twist on two big tunes from heavy-hitters Butch and Henrik Schwarz. First up is Meyer's remix of Butch's "Shahrzad", where he dishes out a truly timeless piece of dancefloor euphoria. With his trademark organic groove and swirling pads, Meyer guides you through a heavenly journey into the distant reaches of sonic elation. On the flip, Jimi Jules brings his A-game with a revision of Henrik Schwarz' classic "Words In Return" and in the process demonstrates an incredibly mature restraint, with precise and calculated efforts which results in an enchanting trip.

Review: Kon and Reflex combine for a cheeky 12" dedication to Michael Jackson for the fourth release on the Boston selector's increasingly on point Star Time label. Edit heaven or what? Reflex calls shotgun and reworks "PYT", amping up the vibe with much crisper drums and a whole lot more space present on that classic chorus drop. Meanwhile on the flip King Of Nothing takes "Get On The Floor" and gives it a modern day party refix complete with full-bodied dynamics, juicy slap bass and very cheeky disco bubbles in the background. Two more essential Michael Jackson edits to add to your collection.

Review: The hand-stamped train just keeps on trucking with Italojohnson, who offers up another three righteous slabs of hardware goodness for the fist-shakers out there. "Track 1" spreads itself over the A side with a tight and punchy rhythm section that gets off set by a gloriously bubbling set of sound effects, managing to be both utterly useful and pleasantly unhinged in the same bar. On the flip side "Track 2" moves with a more neatly trimmed old-skool jack, sleek and refined without sounding over-polished. "Track 3" slows things down for a dirty ride through slimy basslines and heavy cowbell abuse.

Review: This week Best Italy take their reissue romp of Roman rarities down to the infamous Rimini discotheque Cellophane. Crafted as a tribute to the 80s club, "Gimme Love" is an absolute gem of an Italo record, pitched at the more subtle end of the spectrum without ditching the hallmarks of the style. The bass arpeggio still thrums with purpose and the vocals revel in a bath of vocoder processing, but the camp histrionics are replaced here with a more measured delivery that should go down a storm in all kinds of different sets. As well as the original version on the A, the B-side features the Italian version of the track.

The former is a dense weave of horn samples and well-known vocal hooks over some deliciously swashbuckling beats while the latter is a sweatier funk groove that's reminiscent of the classier end of big beat's golden era but with more original funk spirit. Rumour has it they're already deep into their second album...

Review: The Awakening is the seventh and final studio album from The Ahmad Jamal trio. It was originally released way back in 1970, and in the years since has become something of a must-have for jazz collectors. Given that finding original vinyl copies is getting increasingly difficult, this reissue is more than welcome. Musically, it's a boisterous and hugely entertaining affair, with Jamal's virtuoso piano playing taking centre stage. With an accompanying drummer and double bass player providing steady, if unspectacular, backing, Jamal tickles the ivories like a man possessed. Along the way, he doffs his cap to a number of then popular jazz styles, remodeling them in his own image.

Review: Mosca aka Tom Reid is back for Livity Sound with more of his interesting techno derivatives which sure pack a mighty punch. "Don't Take This The Wrong Way" is without a doubt the most hi-tech that he has ever sounded, bordering on IDM where the beats are broken, the sound design is immaculate and basically what techno should be sounding like 2017. On the flip it is a more organic and restrained affair on "Peyote Stitch" with its slinky bass driven groove supported by some trippy and textured samples: all creating a woozy atmosphere beneath that entrancing bleep melody. Following up some great releases on his own Not So Much imprint, Mosca delves deep into his dub chamber and delivers the goods once again for this defining UK label. Highly recommended!

Review: Before James Stinson's untimely death in 2002, the legendary Drexciya producer was working on a follow-up to Lifestyles Of The Laptop Cafe, his sole album as The Other People Place. Somehow, Clone has managed to find a DAT tape of this classic "long lost album" - or, at least, the material he'd already finished for it - and is finally releasing it. Laptop Cafe is, of course, superb, with Stinson brilliantly joining the dots between intergalactic electro, languid deep house, melodious IDM, fluid Motor City techno and most notably, the cymbal-heavy drum rhythms and dexterous piano lines of jazz. While it's not quite as jaw dropping as its acclaimed, recently reissued predecessor, it's still nothing short of sublime.

In order to use an iLok, you'll need at least 3 things:
- Your iLok
- A license for the iLok-protected software you want to run (you'll need to have the publisher place this license in your account or send you an Activation code)
- The software that is iLok protected (usually a download from the Publisher's or retailer's website, we do not host those on this site)

Anything else?

Your iLok will need special License Support software in order to talk to the protected software. Your protected software most likely installed this special software, but you can always get the latest version of this software by installing the iLok License Manager.

  3. Locate Yourself
Review: Ian Blevins has been busy making a name for himself on ESP Institute and Futureboogie, but now he comes to Not An Animal with a slightly different approach that still speaks to the skills the upstart producer has in his sonic arsenal. "The Birds" is a focused, steady-tracking cut for the deeper end of the night, but there's some serious weight in those drums and the heavily processed vocal snippets pack plenty of malaise. Man Power then step up with a "Tropical Bastard" remix of the original, cracking the curtains to allow a little light into the mix but stopping short of over-cooking the mood. "Locate Yourself" on the flip finds Blevins in tracky techno mode, and it turns out it's a style he can nail just as easily as the more organic tones he's known for.

Review: Vincent Inc's Manuscript Records continues to bolster its identity as a vinyl label after years in the digital domain with this crucial single from label founder Vincent Inc. "Wilder" is a seductive opening track that bubbles along on a bed of honey coated melodic tones that should sit easy on the ears of any day time dancer, while "Cold Winds" takes a more somber approach with bluesy keys and heartfelt vocals. "Dreams Of D&L" ups the energy levels with a strict drum set and spiritual melodic swells, and then "Sax Night" edges towards more experimental territory for the mind to happily trip out on.

Review: Sample-loving downtempo fusionist Mo Kolours has yet to make a duff record, so hopes are naturally high for this dinked 7" single on 22a. Predictably, he's in fine form throughout, sauntering between seriously dubbed-out, tropical-tinged hip-hop beats (the ultra-baked heaviness of "Cerasee Doctor"), heavyweight Mauritian drum jams ("Margoze") and hard-to-define Indian Ocean funk (the fretless bass, weird noises and handclaps of quick-fix "Goya". He leaves the best till last, with the skewed hip-hop funk of "Menroe" - all wonky synth-bass, crunchy beats, sampled chants, tropical hand percussion and dubbed-out electronic stabs - hitting home hardest; he's still not made a bad record.

Review: Hot on the heels of two key EPs this year on Frustrated Funk and Where We Met, young UK tech-fuser Reedale Rise steps up to the well-established Spanish pure house label Hizou with yet more treats. Flickering and fluctuating between lucid, dubbed out synth-rippled house such as "Flux Function" and "Shutter" and crisp broken beat liquid machine soul on "Telemetry" and "Psyche 6", Reedale's giving us a lot to chew on right here.

Review: Berlin's Noha is back with a great three tracker for Archie Hamilton's vinyl only imprint Moss Co: a division of Moscow Records. The Nabuco boss serves up the slinky and hypnotic tech house of "Loop Di Mare" on the A side: with its sleek arpeggios and rolling rhythms bringing the heat. On the flip, there's the strongly percussive and deeply dubby house that you've come to know from the label on "Cat", while head honcho Hamilton himself appears with a remix up next. His version is rolling and funky with the main room at pre-peak time in mind: White Isle here we come!

Review: Proving it's still not safe to hit the streets of Melbourne after dark, Power Cuts are at it again with even more dodgy dealings from shady punks with drum machines and synthesisers. Siaubaus' "Haunted White Paper" is as schlocky a slice of wave-esque 80s beatdown as you could ever wish for, while label boss Kris Baha offers up a particularly crusty vision of acid house. On the B side, Disrute edges towards an industrial, new beat tinted workout that's all about the rasping drum hits above all else. Dane//Close finish the EP off with "ForJorge", an angular, mechanical piece with hidden depths folded into the production.

Review: In some ways, And Silently Vanish Away is an odd title for an EP packed with tracks that linger long in the memory. Certainly, electro heads will appreciate the heavy 808 hits, droning bass and fluttering, deep space electronics of Exterminador's brilliant "Alien Soundscapes", not to mention the trippy, delay-laden vocal samples, warped hardware melodies and scuttling drum machine rhythms of NGLY and Exterminador's "Broken Flowers". We're big fans, too, of Hinode's bustling, razor-sharp opener "Mission4" - the kind of track that would leap out of a DJ mix and send you rushing online to find out its identity - and the fuzzy, dust-encrusted techno hum of DJ Nephil's hypnotic "Codex".

Review: Having first pricked our consciousness via a deep, tropical house cut on Moonrise Hill Material's first Love Me Some Friends 12" earlier in the year, Tochigi Canopy delivers his debut album. As first releases go, Collecting Things is something of a doozy: a deliciously dusty, analogue-rich collection of straight-to-tape workouts smothered in stretched-out chords, sticky field recordings and curious, vari-speed effects. Musically, it sees him saunter between soft focus ambient cuts, twinkling downtempo grooves, near horizontal deep house shufflers, and the kind of saucer-eyed soundscapes that sound like they should be sound-tracking blissful summer sunrises. In other words, it's a beauty.

Review: Famously, East of Underground's 1971 debut album - a brilliant set of originals and covers that many soul fans think is an overlooked gem - was pressed up and distributed to soldiers during the Vietnam War by the U.S Army. Here, one of the highlights of that set, the band's cover of Norman Whitfield's "Smiling Faces Sometimes", gets a deserved 7" reissue. It's a wonderful version, all told, with the band's brilliant musicality and emotion-rich vocals shining through (think Curtis Mayfield crossed with the Meters, and you're close). On the flip you'll find another cut from that hard-to-find debut album, "I Love You", a typically sweet and dewy-eyed ballad rippling with vocal harmonies.

Review: null+void finally step up with their second release after impressing with the opening salvo from Shinra, and this time electro fans will be in a tizz to discover that Radioactive Man, Monoak and London Modular's Simon Lynch have teamed up for four utterly essential workouts that tickle the synapses just as much as wiggling your booty. "Tiger Stripes" is a tightly wound snake charmer with intricate rhythmic patterns offset by chilling pad sweeps, while "Fruitcake" gets even more frantic with its growling distortion and unrelenting tempo. "Land" cools things down to a minimalist techno mindstate on the B-side, and then "Aesop" teases out a more melodic kind of electro for the braindance crew.

Review: The third release on the emergent Dreamtime label finds Bobby Bricks and Miskotom sharing precious wax space with their own takes on laid back Balearic house. Bricks is up first, laying down a laid back house chugger propelled by fluttering synth lines that have spent time soaking up plenty of vitamin D. "Amazon Blue" does away with the drums for much of the tune, letting the new age synth tones do all the work before a mellow set of percussion comes loping in. Miskotom has a more nocturnal feel at work on "Star Master", but it's no less plush in its execution, while "Ad Lucem" ramps up fretless bass licks and plastic flute tones for another blissful excursion onto the astral plane.

Review: Cologne twosome and renowned "Superfriends" Andhim return to action, this time wielding a large carving scythe and an enormous slab of kebab meat. Thankfully, "Donner" is not a glitchy minimal techno roller made out of manipulated kebab shop samples, but rather an attractive combination of drowsy analogue bass, Middle Eastern-inspired tech-house drums and rising and falling waves of mind-altering melody lines. It's rather tasty, all told (unlike donner meat), as is clandestine flipside "Ebertplatz". While underpinned by a typically Germanic groove and mildly foreboding chords, it's the duo's cascading electronic melodies and mind-bending analogue touches that really catch the ear.
