Review: Manchester's meandyou collective have quite rightly garnered increasing amounts of praise in recent times, and principal among the reasons for that must surely be the presence of Herron. Also found working with Joy O as C/OR, Herron follows up the excellent 2015 EP The Night Garden with another brooding selection of leftfield techno offerings for those who like something a little different in their club 12". "A6" keeps the mood close and cloying with its ominous textures and pitched down vocal shards, while "Bad Timing" does wonders with a monolithic yet nimble bassline. "Recycle" brings a dustier deep house vibe to the record, while "Cold Hands" lays down warm and inviting synth lines shot through with a necessary strangeness before "Close" rounds the EP off with a disheveled tour through Workshop-esque 4/4 dynamics.

Review: A couple of years back, Rafael Top Secret - a selector known for digging deep for inspiration - delivered a tidy re-edit of "Sekele I Like It", a previously little-known Afro-boogie cut by French artist Robert "Bobby" Helms. Copies of the 1980 album it came from, Lay Down, Girl, now go for serious money, prompting this licensed reissue. Helms' brilliant, horn-totin' original is accompanied by another cut from that album, "Feet On The Ground" - a straight-up disco affair - and two new flipside remixes. Baptman and Betino's "Philly Vibe" mix of "Sekele I Like" is a largely instrumental interpretation that includes some killer electric piano solos, with Vas Moody's "Feet On The Ground" remix taking that track in a tightly-wound dub disco direction.

Review: Three years on from the release of his last Private Collection compilation, British jazz survivor Kev Beadle returns with a third selection of little-known "independent jazz" from the 1970s and '80s. As usual, it's a pleasingly varied affair with a clear dancefloor focus. Beadle, a man with an enviable record collection, variously showcases South American jazz-funk fusion (see Banda Metalurgia's fantastic "La Em Guayaquil" and Francisco Mara Catlett's thrillingly upbeat, "Brazilian Love Affair" style smasher "Samba De Amor"), Nat King Cole style smoothness (the Leon Thomas voiced "Little Sunflower" by Louis Hayes Group), dazzlingly positive extended workouts (Clarice Lebbe and Charlie Hampton), heavy percussion jams (Finn Savery Trio) and confirmed jazz-dance classics (the soul-jazz stomp of Webster Lewis).

Review: Of all DJ duos currently operating in British dance music, Belfast boys Bicep might be the hardest to pin down (Optimo aside, of course). Certainly, this debut album is not easy to pigeonhole, though it is an enjoyably cohesive listen. This is largely down to two factors; the frequent use of deliciously colorful and loved-up synthesizer parts, and the duo's innate ability to utilize beats tailor-made for dancefloor devastation. So while keen dancefloor historians may notice sly (and not so subtle) nods to '89 rave, U.S house and garage, Italo-disco, late '90s progressive house, jungle and early British hardcore, the album never sounds anything less than a fine set of Bicep tracks. Expect it to be one of the biggest albums of the year.

Review: Thirteen studio albums in, and 'Colors' sees Beck maybe at his most playful and upbeat since the late '90s. Title track 'Colors' opens the albums with an immediacy that bursts out like a heavily polished 'Devil's Haircut'. The album veers off in all kinds of pop directions, from the anthemic 'Seventh Heaven', to the almost trap-like 'Wow', Beck shows he's willing to experiment and wrangle as much as possible into an album. It might not be his most contemplative record, but it's definitely his glossiest and most entertaining in a while, and promises a rollercoaster ride from start to finish.

Review: London based Disco outfit Faze Action team up with celebrated Anglo/Brazilian artist, Nina Miranda for proto house crossover. Faze Action have always managed to take different musical traditions and blend them to create sounds that are somehow familiar whilst simultaneously containing the unexpected. Last year's Mangwana, featured long time Faze Action collaborator, Zeke Manyika, singing in his native Zimbabwean Shona over Faze Action's infectious disco production. This time, British/Brazilian singer, artist and all round creative force de majeur, Nina Miranda, takes things further with her invitation to Vamos Pintar or Let's Paint, in Portuguese. On the surface there is the familiar Faze Action restyled proto house but it soon becomes apparent that the brothers have appropriated more than just a Brazilian vocal. Punchy 808 drums and fizzy synths are infused with Brazilian Caixa and Pandaro as if they had always been designed to co-exist. The remixes come from the illustrious Max Essa, whose British born/Tokyo resident background chimes well with the international nature of this latest offering. His Slo-Mo Bubble Dub simmers with Mediterranean sun that reclines into romantic piano flourishes and dubbed out vocals, whilst the Extended Dub manages to draw out the original elements at their original tempo. Faze Action's own Paradise '90 Dub closes the package by keeping close to the original arrangement with added economy and plenty of dub delay of course.

Review: Since the early 1990s, Marco Repetto has been releasing material under a wide variety of aliases, most notably Bigeneric and Planet Love. Now, almost 30 years after his debut release, the Swiss producer has brought the two projects together on one hugely impressive set. Fables of Robotics contains a mix of previously unheard material from both projects, plus material that has never before been committed to vinyl. It's a hugely satisfying and entertaining affair that sprints between spacey, tuneful takes on classic Detroit techno, trippy, off-kilter late night deepness, proto-progressive house, deep space ambient and mid-'90s style British "intelligent techno". There's much to admire throughout and little in the way of filler. In other words, it's a fine release from a hugely talented and storied producer.

If you didn't get a chance to check out the lauded veteran in action on the White Isle, fear not, because The Sound of Mercury Rising is almost entirely made up of music he championed over the summer. As you'd expect, it mixes notably obscure or overlooked gems from the distant past (Elkin & Nelson, the brilliant disco mix of Eighth Wonder's Pet Shop Boys' produced "I'm Not Scared", the Spanish-themed disco of Van McCoy, a killer Tony Esposito cut, and so on) with more recent fare that have tickled Harvey's fancy (the Idjut Boys, Gatto Fritto and the producer's own Locussolus project).

Review: Since returning to action a couple of years back following a near two-decade hiatus, 1990s deep house survivor Ewan Jansen has barely put a foot wrong. With this in mind, it's perhaps unsurprising to find that this outing on IILE is packed full of evocative, melodious and floor-friendly gems. The Australia-based producer begins in confident mood via the darting synth bass, sun-kissed chords and melodious positivity of the wonderful "Reefing 101", before exploring slightly deeper pastures on the huggable warmth of Motor City influenced bumper "The Blackhawks". On the flip you'll find the Larry Heard style lusciousness of "Twinpole" and "Swarbourne", a jazzy and percussive workout smothered in deep space chord progressions. All killer and no filler: job done.

Review: The latest hand-stamped 12" from clothing brand-turned-label Dr Banana comes from DJ Clouds, who is either a mysterious new talent or a new alias of a well-known producer. Whoever the cloud-loving producer is, A-side "United Booty" is an absolute killer. Built around slackened, hip-house style breakbeats, booming bass and vintage hip-hop vocal samples, the punchy and on-point cut is rich in jangly piano stabs and fizzing electronic noises. Flipside "Raw Silk" is arguably even more rambunctious, thanks in no small part to a full-throttle, bass-heavy 4/4 garage groove, sweaty high-register vocal samples and all manner of jazzy, jammed-out Rhodes solos.

The title track takes us back to early 80s New York, featuring a sassy old-school female rap over a mid-paced strut, and has already featured in sets from disco legend Greg Wilson and Hot Digits head-honcho Fingerman. On the flip side, Lost Someone locks down a rolling groove with interweaving synths and a nagging bassline.

Review: The Wizard returns with yet another conceptual project steeped in sci-fi on his new LP Lost In Space. Somehow Jeff Mills' constant forays into said aesthetics are always so fascinating. From his reinterpretation of the soundtrack to Fritz Lang's Metropolis at the turn of the millennium, to releases like Time Machine or Man From Tomorrow: this is where we see the techno master at his most creative. The five track release is the first material from Mills' new electronic-classical project, which is a collaboration with Orchestre National Du Capitole De Toulouse. It is not the first time the Detroit artist has worked with an orchestra: back in 2005 he collaborated with Montpellier Philharmonic Orchestra on the Blue Potential LP where they assisted him on covers from his esteemed Axis/Purpose Maker and Underground Resistance back catalogue. The real power of the musicians' contribution can be heard on tracks like "Planets X " which still retain Mill's power of the original, while "Gliese 436B" employs his trademark hypnotic sound.

This latest 12", though, feels like it may become just as celebrated. A-side "Voxshot" is a proper late night, peak-time treat - a warehouse-friendly throb-job built around cut-up vocal samples, choppy, rave-era house riffs, bold sub-bass and bustling, broken house drums. Flip for "Netscape", a crafty combination of lopped deep house synth-sax, rising melody motifs and '89 Chicago house grooves.

Review: Those delighted by Tallin's Porridge Bullet great job of documenting the late '80s and early 90s period of Estonian music and eager to learn more of the Eastern European country's music heritage should delve into the discography of Frotee. The label's latest release throws the spotlight on Estonian soul singer Velly Joonas, specifically the covers of European songs she recorded during the 1980s. "Stopp, Seisku Aeg!" (or "Stop! Stall the Time!") is a cover by Joonas of "I See Red" from Frida, with the Estonian providing her own lyrics over backing from amateur group Vstretsa and seems quite faithful to the soft skanking 1982 soul number. Complementing this is a wonderful cover of "Feel like Makin Love" which Frotee suggest was laid down in one hour.

Review: The Beats & Breaks 7" series was founded to satisfy the desires of DJs, mainly by serving up re-edits that put some of the world's most recognizable drum breaks front and centre. This edition kicks off with a rearrangement of the Winstons' "Amen Brother", whose drum break not only became a staple of U.S hip-hop in the 1980s, but also the foundation of jungle and later drum and bass. This edit wisely gives plenty of air time to the infamous drum break, dropping into it at frequent intervals in between bouts of punchy, horn-heavy funk. Flip to the B-side for a tastefully chopped and rearranged version of The Chosen Few's super-sweet 1976 soul cut "Candy I'm So Doggone Mixed Up".

Review: It's not clear who is behind the Instinct label, but with this first release the mysterious producer displays an impressive grasp of dark garage and minimal house. The shuffling funk of "The Way" is an instant hit, marrying the razor sharp beats with melancholic synths and a killer bass wobble. "Pressure" deals in more abstract tones, but there's no let up in the nagging insistence of those crisp hi hats. "Cocktail" meanwhile takes a more uptempo approach with its bongo-embellished beat and subtle melodic fragments woven through the mix, and then "Instinct" knocks the ball out of the park with an utterly deadly 2-step workout for those who love Ghost Records and all that ace, moody pre-dubstep business.

Review: Coming to life on a hazy cloud of natural instrumentation and meditative composition, Modern Manners tap into the appetite for delicate new age musings beautifully on this debut release. "Amor Y Odio" is laced with Spanish guitar musings that spiral out over a simple but effective drum break that harks back to classic downtempo, while "Running With Me" edges towards a more sprightly lounge headspace while retaining the rich musicality felt on the first track. "Instant Illusion" is propelled by a bassline that wouldn't sound out of place on a house track, but here its punching out in a subtle, laid back environment that aims to get you horizontal in the most sophisticated way possible.

Review: Forever faithfully mining the past to keep your shelves stocked with gems that might have otherwise been consigned to history, Emotional Rescue turn their attention towards Carl & Carol Jacobs' cult slice of early house music, and what a treat it is. "Yonge Street Jam Band" comes in the form of two mixes that serve as impeccable examples of late 80s club music in all its culture spanning glory. The playful sample slicing and triggering of the second mix is the winner, although the vocals on the original version are equally on point if you want a little more soul in the mix. Jonny 5 then steps up on the flip for a bold but measured re-rub that stretches the vibe out for nine minutes of perfect party fodder.

Review: Brain Machine's Peaks LP was a highlight of the Emotional Response catalogue last year, and it's only right that the album gets a high-class set of remixes to accompany it. The label have pulled out the stops here with an all-star cast, leading in with Salon Des Amateurs dreamweaver Toulouse Low Trax who drops a pinging, plucking version of "Light Space". Then Gigi Masin steps up with an illustrious revision of "Crystal Clouds", while Harmonious Thelonious brings a heavy yet measured, techno-minded presence to "Traces". Ronny & Renzo round the package out with playful synth splashes on their version of "Eclipse Predictions".

Review: Kerri Chandler has history with Watergate, having previously contributed to their acclaimed mix series back in 2014. "Checkmate" is his first 12" for the imprint since, and sees him deliver a cheery chunk of synthesizer-heavy positivity that may remind some listeners of the more sparkling end of Italian dream house. Certainly, the baggy piano riffs and jaunty synth bassline reminded us of all-time classic "Sueno Latino", and "Checkmate" is no doubt capable of soliciting the same kind of boisterous response when dropped at the right time. Cinthie delivers the first remix, opting for a polished but groovy deep house interpretation, before Steve Rachmad places Chandler's bold piano riffs atop a crunchy techno rhythm track with predictably impressive results.

Review: Two dubwise covers, re-issued since Ximeno's first press in 2012. Originally released in 1983, Derrick Harriott's cover of The Dazz Band's "Let It Whip" fuses the best of dub (he was one of the first artists to make sweet music with King Tubby at the mixing controls) and boogie, creating a unique hybrid that works almost too well. Meanwhile on the flip, Susan Cadogan covers the Mtume classic "Juicy Fruit" (also released in 1983), switching the original's R&B flavour for something more sunkissed and sultry. Both will work wonders when the summer comes.

And everything Baaz's Berlin-based label puts out has a great deal of detail invested in it and always requires attention. This is no exception as the mysterious vibe maestro takes us from warm, jazz-tinged chugging deep house to cascading aquatic ambience that bubbles and pops dreamily via fuzzy, springy downtempo. Who knows who's behind this masterpiece? Maybe One Day we'll find out...

Review: Anyone who's ever run a record label will happily tell you how it's rare to find musical gold amongst the many demos speculatively submitted by up-and-coming producers. Imagine Claremont 56 boss Paul Murphy's surprise, then, when he received these superb cuts from previously unheralded German musician Ferdi Schuster. Naturally, he snapped them up straight away. A-side "Little River", in particular, is spectacularly good. Based around the sound of a babbling brook, sun-kissed acoustic guitar licks, vintage synthesizer solos and a languid, samba-inspired groove, it's a grade-A chunk of Balearic brilliance. While B-side "Befreit" doesn't quite reach these dizzying heights, it's still a wonderful trip into sunrise-friendly downtempo territory. As debut singles go, it's little less than stunning.

Review: Cirez D is the alias for techno production that Swedish superstar DJ Eric Prydz uses on his dedicated imprint for such style: Mouseville. On the A side we have the slow burning and tunnelling hypnotism of "The Accuser" with its layers of grinding and adrenalised arpeggio, backed by rattlesnake rhythms plus generous servings of white noise build-ups and laser zaps: all you need right here, seriously! On the flip is "On Off" (Pryda remix) where Prydz dons his other infamous alias for an evocative and life affirming progressive house epic. It's featuring yet more elevating arpeggiations, hands in the air melodies and bumpy bass all geared for stadium sized euphoria.

Review: Lee Burridge and Matthew Dekay's All Day I Dream started off as a party concept, then a music label of the same name which captured the sound of their decadent daytime rooftop parties around the world: their Stateside ones being the most raved about. Since then, they have defined their own aesthetic and you just know what one of their new records will entail: sun-kissed tech house on the deeper tip with evocative orchestral arrangements and blissed out vibes. Their new one comes from Frenchman in Berlin (by way of Sydney) Yokoo, who teams up with Retza on "Euneirophrenia" a slinky and sexy groove with the mandatory symphonies and some hypnotic bongos. On the flip, there's something a bit more upbeat and certainly more immersive on the dubby house of "Tarantism" while the rolling and bass driven "Yugen" proves the EP's finest moment.

Review: There's deep, and then there's the work of Bastian "Baaz" Volker. The German producer's work is rarely less than ultra-deep, and this return to Slices of Life - a label he last blessed four years ago - is predictably hazy and hypnotic. Title track "The Reason" is typical of his style, with becalmed, head-in-the-clouds chords and chopped-up vocal samples reclining over a crispy tech-house groove. Flipside "Ancestors Groove" is a little livelier, both rhythmically and structurally, with chiming blasts of melody and suitably soulful vocal samples riding a backing track rich in bustling bass, bumping beats and drowsy pads.

Review: In the short and succinct info sheet accompanying this release, Crow Castle Cuts describes DJ Moonbeam's label debut as "extra terrestrial nippiness brought to you by the power of the moon in full eclipse". Seemingly an analogue-rich, head-in-the-clouds deep house alias of producer Andrew Cole AKA Luv Jam, the mini album is full of huggable deep space chords, fluttering new age synthesizer melodies, evocative field recordings and surprisingly tactile drum machine rhythms. While there are excursions into more downtempo territory (see closer "Waterside"), the best moments are mostly those where he gets locked into a groove and runs with it. In this category you'll find the lusciously dubbed-out late night deep house of "You're From The Future" and the Detroit inspired deep techno of "IO" and "Coast".

Review: If you're looking for serious, late night sleaze, dial 1-800-PBR. Alternatively, purchase this fine 12" from Leeds twosome PBR Streetgang. In its original form, "Late Night Party Line" is a filthy chunk of breathless, party-starting brilliance - a thrusting, heavily electronic workout that joins the dots between New York freestyle, acid house, mid '80s Italo-disco and the sort of European interpretations of Chicago house that were once all the range in London's LGBTQ venues. Over on the flip you'll find a rock solid Dub that wisely allows the rubbery, all-action groove to take centre stage, largely by removing the original's breathy vocal samples and adding a little more TB-303 driven funk.

Review: Arkajo doesn't care as much as others when it comes to meticulously pacing releases, and instead, has chosen to churn out two banging EPs at roughly the same time. The man's got one out right now on Bror Records, as well as this new killer for Brotherhood Sound System, taking the minimal equation back into the limelight. The title tune "Panacea" rocks and echoes majestically, flowing through the speakers with fluid motion and a cavernous, almost tribal sense of rhythm, while "Tape8" strips much of that bulk down to a razor-sharp techno bullet with a crafty groove, and "Tape15" bundles a myriad of glacial bleeps and bouncy drums together under one tight roller that's reminiscent of the Perlon output.

Review: Moustache-sporting producer Fede Lijtmaer - widely regarded as one of Uruguay's leading house and techno producers - has been surprisingly quiet since the release of his debut single on Oslo back in 2014. Clearly, he's been working hard in the three years that have passed since, because Autotransformacion is really rather good. For the most part, the Uruguayan blends sounds, melodies and rhythmic ticks borrowed from early British tech-house (when Detroit was the inspiration, rather than Berlin), occasionally throwing in a reference to classic ambient house (the Terrence McKenna-sampling "TM on DMT") or deep house ("True Self"). The exception to the rule is the brilliant "Polaridades", a thrillingly fuzzy and bass-heavy chunk of late night electro smothered in ragged acid lines and spacey electronics.

Review: Dubtraxx is new on the scene, as is their label Rhythm N Vibe, but don't let that lull you into a false sense of security - this is seriously heavyweight gear. "Soundbwoy Request" is especially dangerous, working plenty of dub, reggae and jungle motifs into a rugged garage structure and sounding utterly ruff in the process. "Towards '99" is no slouch either, albeit on a slightly housier tip than the raucous A-side. The "2000 Tribute Mix" of "Next Millenium" meanwhile sneaks out a few of the eerie tones you'd expect to hear around the time that dubstep first started to emerge.

Review: Emotional Rescue and Malka Tuti recognise their shared passion for globe-trotting sounds and team up to present this album from C Cat Trance, a project from John Rees Lewis who was formerly of post punkers Medium Medium. It's no surprise to learn that this was a project of the 1980s, as all the hallmarks are there. With the same outernational attitude that made the work of Eno, Hassell, Czukay, Wobble and scores more so alluring, this collection shines a light on a true gem of the era and provides a fresh pressing of some stone cold leftfield party groovers like "Shake The Mind".
