  4. Baby Blue (feat Lenzman) (4:57)
Review: Lenzman's North Quarter hits its stride once again with another superb collection from one of the scene's most tireless, unsung heroes. This time it's FD who takes the reigns with four outstanding pieces of soul: "Always Something" features one of the best MCs in the game - Fox. Flowing between his sweet bars and deep singing style, it's one of Fox's most delicately laid down tracks to date (which is saying something) Elsewhere "Ice Cream" hits on the up-notes with a loose drum energy, fresh energy and another scorching vocal, "This Is Now" is a much slinkier, bass-licked dancefloor swinger while "Baby Blue" blasts us off into the ether with dreamy vocal textures and warm-but-warped synths. Stunning and timeless.

Review: As you might expect, the latest multi-artist release from Texas Underground Recordings boasts a quartet of deep techno treats from producers based in the Lone Star State. Brooks Mosher impresses with the sweet and cylical synthesizer melodies and bubbling electronic percussion of "Magic Hat", before the mighty Convextion joins the dots between melancholic techno, electro and bustling IDM on EP standout "Summer Indoors". ILL76 injects a little more forthright energy via the bumpy but angular drums and mind-altering late night riffs of "New Year's Night", while Submersible Machines head straight for the Motor City on the classic deep futurism of closer "If You Know How I Feel". Stellar stuff, all told.

  3. Unparalleled Consistency
Review: Italian producer Enrico Mantini has been his thing for longer than most, with releases reaching back to the early 90s when deep house was first surging in popularity in Italy. This new label Purism opens up with Mantini showing off his years of experience via some warm, undulating tracks that should sit comfortably with any lover of true deep house. "Inner Heights" is as laid back as they come, harmonious and buttery synths oozing over gentle machine beats. "4 Strings Love" is a peppier affair with a bumping rhythm and dubby melodic touches, and then "Unparalleled Consistency" strips everything back to a minimal core, showcasing the range within Mantini's learned palette.

Review: Before it became fashionable to do so, Lord of the Isles was already a master at joining the dots between the spacey synthesizers of Detroit techno, the morning after loveliness of ambient house, and the urgent thrust of electronic disco. You'll find nods to all three of these recurring themes - and, more surprisingly, the bouncy riffs of New Jersey garage - on the epic "Synth Plus", which opens the Scottish producer's latest EP with a bang. Interestingly, the track boasts both long, beat-free sections and periods of percussive hypnotism driven forwards by jacking, Chicago house style drums. Flip to the B-side for the fevered, panicked sound effects and dense tribal drums of "To Here", as well as the skewed, acid-flecked, triple time oddness of closer "Heyta Hopta".

  1. Save The Projects (10:22)
  2. Just A Simple Dub (7:14)
Review: Girada Unlimited is a new record label from Spain, run by none other than Julian Perez. The man behind the highly lauded imprint Father & Sons Productions, this Ibiza resident has had a successful run of releases which have helped to define a new and exciting sound in tech house at present, alongside the likes of S.A.M., iO (Mulen) or Jack Wickham amongst others. A side cut "Save The Projects" is a rolling and hypnotic jam assisted by swing fuelled rhythms, bumpy bass and warm chords that flow in and out nicely. On the flip we have something more reminiscent of Perez' usual work in the form of "Just A Simple Dub" and it does exactly what it says on the tin on this the deep and dubby excursion that will immerse you fully underwater, with its smooth groove and trance inducing ethereal pads.

  4. Swing Star (part 2) (6:44)
Review: Given that Todd Terje's first original material in some five years resulted in one of last year's highlights with the Running Back released Ragysh, it's natural he would want to leave some space before following up. The first of a series of EPs crafted from using one bit of vintage gear in particular, It's The Arps sees Terje dabble with the intricacies of the Arp 2600 analogue synthesizer as well as pay homage to his favourite Monty Python sketch. This is just as nerdy as you'd expect from a man who recently launched a website with the specific intention of exploring the obsessive studio nature of his contemporaries. The aforementioned "Inspector Norse" is an obvious highlight here, slowly unfurling gorgeous layers of playful synthesis that grapple the simplistic drums with flirtatious delight. Naturally for someone who spends most weekends of the year in a nightclub, Terje demonstrates a real prowess for building up the track, teasing your senses once before unleashing the mid point monstrous moment. It makes for another signature track from Terje which is likely to engender a rapturous reception for many months to come. Alongside it, "Myggsommer" provides a brief, twee interlude into oddball sci fi soundscapes which again prove to highlight the Arp 2600's capacity for inventive and idiosyncratic sounds. From here Terje unveils a two part skywards saunter through "Swing Star" showcasing a more dextrous manipulation of the Arp 2600's melodies across the markedly more rhythmic upbeat first part and expansive luxurious cosmic subsequent endeavour. Whilst "Inspector Norse" is guaranteed to be the one track from this release you will hear in the international discotheques, the remainder of It's The Arps serves as a excellent reminder of Terje's ever growing talent as a producer.

Review: Since going solo last year, former Onra collaborator Byron Blaylock has yet to put a foot wrong. Each successive 12" has brought with it a swathe of killer new jams straddling the blurred lines between soul, jazz, hip-hop, deep house and jazz-funk. There's more of the same on Leaving This Planet, the Alabama-raised producer's first EP for the mighty Eglo. So while opener "Song for a Friend" is a superior, jazz-flecked deep house bumper smothered in killer electric piano solos, the track that follows, "Mind, Body & Soul" is a squelchy tech-jazz masterpiece. It's the same story on the flip, as floor-friendly jazz-breaks ("Blow Your Mind") make way for a heady trip into intergalactic jazz-funk territory ("SSDP"). As the worn-out old saying goes, this is "all killer, no filler".

Review: Alex "Omar" Smith has something he wants to get off his chest. The much-lauded Detroit producer has teamed up with re-born Italians Do It Better sorts Nite Jewel for "Confess To You", which comes in two distinctive variations. The A-side "Mix" revolves around a tactile, boogie-era synth bassline, late night AM radio synthesizer chords, drifting sax solos and a crunchy, deep house-influenced rhythm track. Arguably even better is the flipside vocal version, which naturally sees Smith, Romana Gonzalez and company deliver a near perfect chunk of '80s soul/deep house fusion. It sounds like a softly spun summer anthem in waiting. Don't take our word for it, though; check out the clips and revel in the track's breezy brilliance.

Connors is a drummer first and foremost, and across his rhythm-focussed recordings were the introduction of singers who went on to have their own individual careers such as Jean Carn, Phyllis Hyman and the exceptional Phillip Mitchel - who features on A side 'Once I've Been There'. Flipside track 'Captain Connors' comes as a 12" mix made in 1977 but never released before on vinyl! Review: Soundway offer us a new compilation featuring 20 rare tracks from the currently much talked about world of Nigerian pop music; a zeitgeist of their early 1980s club culture. The country's economy was booming at the time and so was its recording industry. Strongly influenced by '70s disco and funk, this new generation were, as the liner notes explain "Eager to sound as American as possible with no hint of the fervour for afro-beat, afro-rock and afrocentric thinking that the 1970s had thrown up". The original albums that many of these singles came from go for exorbitant prices online, so here's a chance to snap up some of the periods finest music, remastered across three 12"s.

Review: Emotional Response reach out to another fine selection of sonic voyagers to take Brain Machine's excellent Peaks LP to task, leading in with the warm discoid undulations of Rollmottle who refigures "To The Stars" as a gentle, groovy warm-up joint. Die Wilde Jagd takes on "Mercury Ripples" and fashion a bombastic breaks jam out of it, and Merrick Adams pushes "Alpha Moon" into a curious but ultimately cosmic space somewhere beyond the titular lunar body. Cass takes the prize with the bittersweet synth tones that course through the two-part remix of "Nexus Vox".

Just try listening to the steel guitar lilt and percussive tumble of "Tahiti Blue" and not having the image of a balmy, breezy island scene in your third eye. Review: REPRESS ALERT! Best Record Italy take the time machine all the way back to 1979 to revisit the wonderful Italo-Disco delights of Adolf Stern, whose "More... I Like It" represents the strangest end of the genre as it was taking shape. With heavily processed vocals injecting some serious strangeness into the chirpy disco backdrop, it's the kind of track to turn heads without a doubt. "Twenty Seven" on the B-side is equally magical in its capturing of the era, with the more obvious surface elements underpinned by a truly intoxicating line in synth arpeggios. Once again Best comes up trumps refreshing the history of Italian music of all shapes and sizes.

The label alone should give you an idea of the vibe on this record, where Detroit-inspired deep house with soul, flair and grit gets steered in intriguing new directions. So it goes on LeDoux's first outing, kicking off with the dazzling chord trickery of "Me Time" before "Feels Like" nestles down into a broken beat groove sprinkled with gorgeous arpeggios. "Raw Meat" takes a dramatic turn into a more global, percussive sound world with stunning results, and then "Grief" simmers things down with a home-listening cut loaded with craft FX processes and a jazzy demeanor to offset the artistic distortion.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Italian house bastion Vibraphone Records has more than proven itself in the realms of classic deep house, but this new release from KNLB certainly speaks to the new age of the label. The unknown producer makes a stunning entry with "Second Wind", an effervescent breakbeat number that harks back to classic 90s Mo Wax sounds with its resonating piano licks and gritty drum samples. "Apollo" meanwhile creates an interesting variation on the dub techno template with a wealth of instrumentation cavorting around a tripped out chord stab, and then "Initialize" drifts off into blissful deep house meditation atop a purposeful beat. Minimono swoop in to inject some direct funk into their remix of "Intialize", and a very fine job they do of it too.

Review: Burnski's debut album DNA dropped on Constant Sound last year, and now the label have called upon a strong cast of characters to do the remix duty on some of the LP's key tracks. Parisian trio Mandar bring a heart-melting tone to "Another Source" without losing their insistent shuffle, while Diego Krause strips things down with a functional broth of minimal minded business. The original mix of "Another Source" gets a fresh outing, and very fine it sounds too. That leaves it to Laura Jones to twist out a hypnotic electro version of "I Like You".

Review: It would be fair to say that Melanie de Biasio may not be single-handedly keeping Belgium's jazz tradition alive, but she's certainly spearheading a revival of sorts. This third studio set arrives some four years on from her sophomore set, and 12 months after her most adventurous work to date, the 25-minute Blackened Cities. It's a largely upbeat and hugely atmospheric affair, mixing her usual Nina Simome style jazz workouts with drowsy, piano-laden torch songs, evocative accapella interludes and, in the case of the brilliant "Gold Junkies", dubbed-out, four-to-the-floor fusions of trip-hop and dark soul. Throughout, her superb voice provides a stunning focal point.

Review: When it comes to creating chilly coldwave and new wave influenced dark electro, few producers can boast as impressive a discography as Brigitte Enzler AKA Beta Evers. She returned to action earlier this year following a six-year absence via a track on a split EP on Peripheral Minimal, and here delivers her first solo 12" since 2008. She begins with the sharp, horror-influenced synth motifs and bustling drum machine beats of "Don't Be Afraid", before exploring more aggressive and mind-altering territory on the sleazy "Move In My Body Rhythm". Flip for the creepy, triple time hustle of "Eruption" and the moody but clattering throb of "Destination".

  4. Guda (feat Voltery)
Review: Little is known about Medicis, other than he last appeared back in 2015 on Lazare Hoche alongside Voltery. On this, his second 12", he strikes out on his own for the Parisian deep house stable with some of that refined, head-tweaking groove fodder that has broadly defined the label since it started. "Vilaroel" features shimmering tones that call to mind Point G at his dubbiest, while "Dissfreq" takes a sweeter route into dreamy pads and lightly shuffling drums. "Carrier" is a darker, techier affair with plenty of hypnotic elements spinning in the mix, and then Mdecisi' old friend Voltery lands a hand on the downtempo delights of "Guda".

Review: Since Dego and Lordamercy (AKA former Bugz In The Attic and Hoomecookin' member Matt Lord) are old pals, it's little surprise to find them joining forces for a tasty 12" on 2000 Black. They begin with the samba-soaked summer sunshine of "Green Woods", where Kaidi Tatham style jazz-funk synth lines and rich boogie bass ride a shuffling, Brazilian style groove. Speaking of boogie, the duo pay a heartfelt tribute to the early '80s style on "What Does It Take To Come In First", which is built around Herbie Hancock style keys and a righteous slap bass workout. The slightly more broken but no less "live" sounding "Can't Remember But I Know" completes a superb EP.

Review: Having notched up releases on the likes of Raum...musik and Apollonia, Makcim & Levi make the move to Lazare Hoche to deliver another shedload of hard-grooving house bombs for the deepest part of the night. The 1055ml EP is a mixed bag that leads with the title track, which encapsulates everything that's great about the stripped down house sound that Lazare Hoche is committed to. "Sandwiches" meanwhile is a quirky, bugging jam that wriggles under the skin in the most subtle of ways before "Sowhaa" brings a much more hypnotic, pad-laden blend to the table for a soft landing from this feisty 12" of forward-thinking 4/4.

Review: Fred Everything's Lazy Days label is a veritable institution by this stage in the game, and it's no surprise to see a label of such stature reaching out to an artist as highly regarded as Atjazz. Martin Iveson, as he's also known, ditches the alias here but the mood is consistent with his reputation. "Leave Me Here" is a jazz-soaked beauty in its original form and when Jimpster takes the controls for a remix. On the flip comes Art Of Tones, whose "Koniokola" gets not one but two versions from Fred Everything. Both the remix and "re dub" deal in masterful tech house from a true champion of the genre.

  3. Death & Rebirth (4:34)
Review: Alessandro Adriani, the Italian-born, Berlin-based owner of the excellent Mannequin Records is up on Regis, Silent Servant and James Ruskin's Jealous God label, what can pretty much be boiled down to the continuation of the Sandwell District alliance. The focus is on hard-hitting slabs of jack-hammer techno with the crew's familiar hint of brutal industrialism at the core, which is perfect for the likes of Adriani's uncompromising 4/4 aesthetic. "Harvest" dominates the entirety of the A-side with its wild, bleeping wormhole of noise and organic drum patterns - the snares sounding suspiciously like metal axes hitting the chopping board; one the flip, "Prehistory" is relatively tamer on the surface, while still hitting hard down in the depths of the bass, and "Death & Rebirth" provides what comes most naturally to both artist and label... the sweet sense of tenebrous doom on the horizon.

  1. Tresors (6:21)
  2. Tsundoku (5:43)
Review: Some two decades after delivering his first release, Pepe Bradock continues to make some of the most inventive - if occasionally overly challenging - house records around. This bizarrely titled 12" is the Parisian producer's first for almost a year and contains two typically eccentric cuts. A-side "Tresors" is underpinned by a loose but locked-in groove, but it's the smorgasbord of weird samples and effects - jazz synths, trippy noises, dubbed-out horns, buried acid lines, and so on - that really catches the ear. Flipside "Tsundonku" is arguably even more trippy thanks to Bradock's use of backwards percussion hits, grandiose filtered double bass, more weird noises and a rock solid, techno style kick-drum groove.

Review: Fresh from his impeccable Fabric mix, in which he lays down nothing but his own creations, Dan Snaith finally unleashes some of the mix's many highs for our own mixing pleasure. "Face To Face" has been anticipated for a while thanks to its sultry stripped-back loose-stringed groove and late-entering vocal, "Tin" sees Dan incorporating the same rising, crisp euphoria you find in his Caribou work as synths flutter over a chugging late 90s style house beat while "Xing Tian" shuffles and twists with a little more fuzz and unpredictability. Classic Daphni.

Review: Continuing his multi-faceted adventures on his own label away from the usual Hessle Audio fun and games, Pearson Sound reaches towards his keenest party-starting instincts with this essential pair of future-minded floor quakers. "Thaw Cycle" rides atop an irresistible garage bump with plenty of alien percussion spitting at its core, while the melodic touches add a great deal of depth and mystery to the proceedings. "Freeze Cycle" meanwhile taps into Hood-inspired levels of cyclical techno minimalism to great effect, showing a different side to an ever-shapeshifting artist without losing that perfect balance of immediacy and the unexpected.

Review: Following excellent releases from Skatebard, Les Crocodiles and Lunar Concept amongst many others, Pleasure Unit turn to Cut The Rug crew member Mike Misiu for their latest instalment of cool-headed modern disco. "Do What You Need" sports a Metro Area demeanour, with a classic vocal hook sprinkled in at opportune moments for maximum impact. The dub mix is no less satisfying, even with the famous sample rubbed out, but in fact the real pleasant surprise of this release is B2 jam "Love Talk". With its funky midtempo 90s breakbeat and heavy-hitting piano, it's an addictive party starter that harks back to the acid jazz days while still fitting right into the here and now.

Review: MC Fats and Cleveland Watkiss on one record? Now Break is just showing off! Bonafide soul badness, everything about this record is bliss as both the iconic vocalists harmonise with total messages of unity. "We Are The People" is almost gospel in its intentions while "Midnite Classic" takes us a little deeper into the night with more of Break's classic roughhouse funk foundation. Fresh from soundtracking many of Sun & Bass's parties this year, this is now yours forever. Give it to the people!
