  4. Thermal Explorer (2:19)
Review: The Hamburg-Berlin connection returns. Retreat label boss Hauke Freer and Matthias Reiling of Giegling fame have been at it as Session Victim for the better part of 10 years and they're still in fine form. The third instalment of Listen To Your Heart features four splendid journeys into the deep. Starting off with the lo-slung disco loops of "Almost Midnight" on the A side, which is followed up by the sun-kissed/slo-mo balearica of "Castle For Sale". On the flip, they pick up the pace once again with "Almost Midnight" which showcases the classic SV sound: deep house from a hip-hop production style of technique which no doubt influenced a new generation of German producers such as Glenn Astro & Max Graef. Finally, recline, relax and light one up to the dubbed out ambient journey that is "Thermal Explorer".

  1. Kettle America (7:18)

  3. Without Rob (5:46)
Review: Razor 'N' Tape's two previous servings of Dimitri From Brooklyn edits (and, yes, they're the work of legendary DJ/producer Dimitri From Paris) were both must-haves, so hopes are naturally high for this third volume. Predictably, the disco-loving Frenchman is on fine form once more, laying down a trio of interpretations that breathe new life into classic jams. While the A-side "Kettle America" (say it phonetically) is something of a cheeky treat - impressively chopping between hard-wired guitar riffs and the original track's bustling disco groove - it's "I Knead You", an end-of-night, lights-up version of a Sylvester cut that smartly emphasizes the song's gospel origins, that really sparkles. "Without Rob", a harmonica-heavy rearrangement of a well-known favourite, completes another essential package.

Review: Favorite Records take us direct to the source: a disco gem of holy grail proportions, Sunshine is Byron's only album, OG copies go for over L500 and it's chock-a-block with dancefloor gold. From the in-your-face physicality of "Galaxy" or the planet-kicking line dance feels of "Space Cowboy" by way of the ultimate 80s sleaze synth boogie of "Heart To Heart Sensation", this was Byron in his prime with so much promise and latent funk, and led to one of disco's ultimate bombs "Dance To The Music". Essential.

Review: REPRESS ALERT! Spearheaded by Stuart Leath, Emotional Rescue is a label committed to unearthing forgotten gems and giving them the exposure they richly deserve, with all releases officially licensed by the artist and remastered in full. This 12" sees two classic tracks by the world music collective Suns of Arqa take pride of place. Incorporating elements of raga and dub, "Brujo Magic" is a much more straightforward dancefloor number than its description would suggest, with its rolling bassline and vocoder effects fusing irresistibly with its psyche-rock styles. On the B-Side, "Ananta Snake Dance" combines traditional Indian percussion and harmonium with conventional drumming to create something completely unique. A strong start to what will no doubt be an indispensable label.

  2. Baby, Baby (6:31)
  3. Basic Principle (4:54)
Review: ** Repress For The Hood Fans ** This much anticipated EP on his own M Plant label sees Detroit legend Robert Hood continue to develop to his Floorplan alias after the recent Living It Up single. The A-Side explores euphoric 90s house tropes in "We Magnify His Name", a peak time piano driven anthem which is as religious an experience to listen to as its name suggests, complete with uplifting gospel vocals. On the flip, Hood explores his darker techno tendencies over two tracks. "Baby Baby" relies more on a cut up vocal sample and a slightly wobbling Motor City leaning bassline and a Model 500 style funk swing to it, provided in no small part by a particularly great guitar lick, while tension and release is offered in spades by a well placed horn sample. "Basic Priciple" meanwhile is a druggier affair propelled by its murky sub bass and techno stabs, the only melody coming from a particularly sinister two note organ line.

Review: This limited edition new reissue series from Mukatsuku singles only label focuses on timeless tracks have not yet made it on to 7 inch to date. Both sides are indeed heavy and no doubt you have experienced some of them on a long player. Side one is from the 1975 Fantasy Records masterpiece Vibes of Truth from Three Pieces and "Self Dealin'". A nice little slice of funky goodness, strings and all: it's nice to see this tune on the format. The flip, is another jazz funk classic that has always gotten maximum spins on the LP. Johnny Hammond Smith's "Tell Me What To Do" from the brilliant Gears LP, a record that has definitely not been overlooked. This full length gave us "Shifting Gears", "Los Conquistadores Chocolates", "Can't We Smile", and more. Originally on Milestone, it has been a classic for years so a welcome release for todays 45 market. Review: Italian techno demi-god Lory D returns with the third instalment of the Strange Days series for Glasgow's Numbers! This guy is simply unstoppable and it's simply incredible to hear how he has managed to keep his sound so damn contemporary over the years. Oh, and it's rumoured that he used to be one of Aphex Twin's favourite techno artists back in the day! "Gm-HF" is a heads-down kinda nodder, packing a humongous bassline for the peak time floor, while "Acidspix", as the name suggests, is a beautifully odd 303 jam with enough stability to make it a perfectly usable dancefloor weapon. What more can we say? It's totally unmissable and warmly recommended.

Review: German bandleader Lutz Krajenski has enjoyed a long and successful working relationship with Agogo. The Austrian label has previously released countless singles and albums from his Hidden Jazz Quartett [sic] combo and here allows him a chance to go solo on a fine 7" single. Taken from an album of Agogo catalogue covers due to see the light of day in early 2018, A-side "I Got Hope" (originally recorded by the Hi-Fly Orchestra) is a sumptuous, slow-burning jazz ballad featuring superb vocals from Alana Alexander. She reprises her role on the flipside, where Krajenski and his collected musicians lay down a killer, Clavinet-heavy version of Timmy Thomas classic "Cold, Cold People".

Review: Well, this is an absolute Klockworks takeover this week, and its clear that Mr.Klock himself is making a bit of a statement! This is the third episode of the new Klockworks compilation series, each one of these releases bound together by a similar artwork and, of course, a mutual love for sleek, direct techno for the mind. Newbies Jay Clarke and Ritzi Lee ride on the A-side of this double-pack, both offering a dusty procession of calculating techno, while the B-side is dominated by Reus' tenebrous "Acid Mono" and High Position's hard-hitting, dub-leaning "Cops". The second disc kicks off with Yokol's dreamy patterns through "Dense", followed by the dark and bass-heavy groove of Adam Craft. Vincent's "How I Feel" closes off the compilation with a comparatively more soulful piece via "How I Feel", a melody-rich house-techno hybrid for the masses.

  7. Trevino - "Sombre Tones" (4:53)
Review: The good chaps over at Hardwax, Klockworks' own distribution network, are calling this a "perfectionist techno compilation" and, in their own words, it comes "warmly recommended". We agree with both of statements, and believe this to be a fine piece of work from the Ben Klock collective. Perhaps listeners won't hear anything drastically game-changing in here, but it is certainly all dance music of the highest calibre, from a collection of artists who have truly crafted a neat and elegant vision of techno music. On this double, the first in an upcoming series, there's a mixture of old and new faces all coming together to showcase the sound they've been so close to over the years; the wonderful Sterac makes an appearance with a refreshingly off-kilter blur of dub techno on "Lately", while Ben Klock himself comes through with the ice-cold bleeps of "Twenty", and the mighty DVS1 blasts out some penetrative percussion folds on "In The MIddle. Trevino rocks the boat with "Sombre Tones", whereas relative newcomers Etapp Kyle and Jon Hester turn in their own 5am bullets.

Review: To date, Swiss trio Alma Negra has carved a successful niche as makers of heavily percussive 12" singles that look to the rhythms of Africa for inspiration. This outing for Heist Recordings draws on many similar influences, but shuffles further towards original production than their rework style back catalogue. Opener "Afrorleans" is a jaunty trip into shuffling Afro-house territory in the company of a cabal of Cajun musicians, while "Luanda Dub" is a booming, bass heavy late night trip full of swirling vocal samples and densely layered drum hits. Flip to the B-side for the party-starting Afro-disco/deep house fusion of standout "Endless Summer" and a cracking Soulphiction remix of the same track that pushes a rubbery disco bassline to the fore to devastating effect.

This is crisp, laid back boogie of the highest caliber, with the title track in particular nailing everything we love about this inimitable era of funk. There's more than whiff of Luther Vandross about the opening strains of "Give It Up", but "Liberated Woman" strikes out on its own with a more ballad-like tone but no dip in the all-important get down.

Review: Most are familiar with Junior Byron's brilliant 1983 single "Dance to the Music", but few are well acquainted with the boogie/reggae fusionist's '85 jam "Trying to Hold On". Helpfully, Cultures of Soul has decided to reissue it for the first time, accompanying the original vocal version - a super-sweet, spaced-out synth-boogie workout complete with a thrillingly soulful and sun-kissed reggae vocal from the effervescent Byron - and stripped back "Version" (intergalactic boogie-dub of the highest order) with a fresh rework from Gerd Janson. The Running Back chief does a brilliant job in combining elements of both versions, adding more dub effects and emphasizing Byron's brilliant vocal in all the right places. It's a stunning rework of a little-known classic.

Further proof of this assertion can be found on RWY, the third 12" on the producer's own Revision Records imprint. The title track sees him once again take his scalpel to a track by Michael Jackson, subtly building layering up and extending "Rock With You" (a feat made possible by his ability to get hold of multi-track parts to the material he re-edits). On the flip, he successfully tampers with Lionel Richie's end-of-night classic "All Night Long". Brilliantly, he removes much of the percussion during key vocal passages, which in turn gives subsequent choruses extra dancefloor oomph. Bravo, Sir.

Review: While he's been plenty busy on his own labels since making a comeback, it's great to see Nail's impeccable form getting picked up elsewhere. Politics Of Dancing is a natural home for his razor sharp tracks, as is evident from the off with the deadly thrust of tech house sizzler "Dub Me 2". "U Gotta Be There" is a more dreamy affair, but there's still a searing heat coming off those beats that will work on all kinds of floors. Cab Drivers are a smart fit for remix duties, and they turn "Dub Me 2" into an even more tripped out twist on the tech house format.

The explosive title track will take you back to an NYC Storm Rave circa '94, full of Joey Beltram style hoovers and fierce breakbeats. Breakneck acid electro cut "Emutraxx" blows the bloody doors off, in the vein on Air Liquide or Jammin Unit. For a change of pace you can try the wonky slow burner "No Phone Calls" fuelled by a druggy 303 drawl and a lazy 4/4 beat, while Scandinavian noise terror Peder Mannerfelt works his magic as always on his jagged and angular remix of "Real": it's real brooding, you've been warned!

Review: Having appeared only once before with the excellent Reel Nitty Gritty 12" on Echovolt, Paradise Box makes a return on Crimes Of The Future with a new set of crunchy leftfield club tracks infused with house, electro and disco sensibilities. "Hookup" is a cracked and mucky affair, but it kicks where it counts, but then "Running Up That Hill" comes along to impart a more emotive, clear-cut message via a cover of Kate Bush. "Ya Mo Be There" throws down a heavy wedge of 80s synth lines that refigures the James Ingram and Michael McDonald belter in a most unlikely of ways.

Review: Mathematics continues their fine run in 2011 with a slice of acid house history from the legendary Adonis. All the way back in 1988, Adonis teamed up with Charles B and dropped "Lack Of Love". It's presented here by Jamal Moss's label in a new "Summer Of Love 88 - Extended Replay" version that retains all the delightful and unpredictably raw rhythms that duck between heavy 303 usage and tub thumping gospel leads. You have to marvel at the chaotic epicness of a track which is over twenty years old and probably produced on the most primitive of hardware. On the flip Mathematics mainstay Steve Poindexter drops an equally demented remix of Adonis' 1989 jacker "Reck The Joint" that double dares you to dance.

  13. Sketches Of Brunswick East III (2:07)
Review: On their third studio album in half a year, hyper-prolific Aussies King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have chosen to team up with Mild High Club, the slacker psychedelia project of Alexander Brettin. The collaboration strikes a happy medium between King Gizzard's overbearing frenetic sound and Mild High Club's laidback stoner attitude. Sketches Of Brunswick East has all the King Gizzard hallmarks: time signature and rhythm changes, explorations of microtonal harmonics and eastern scales, but the introduction of smoky noir jazz nostalgia as well as North African and Ethiopian flavours make for intriguing additions. It's refreshing to hear that, despite being seemingly unable to stop releasing records, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard haven't run out of good ideas just yet.

Review: An absolutely belting slice of disco soul from Queen Yahna on a long-awaited legitimate reissue on Patrick Adams P&P imprint. Powerful vocals, big backing harmonies, a slippery tight groove and a message of positivity running through both the vocal and the instrumental... There's a reason OG copies of these have flown like hotcakes in the past. High grade 76 business.

Review: Aside from a few, sporadic appearances here and there, East End Dubz has pretty much been loyal to his own imprint, through which he has solidified a house sound of his own. Number 16 in the series offers a predictably classy affair in the form of 2 club trax that are bound to sync with pretty much anything you throw at them. "Space Cadet" is a direct, no bullshit house missile made for keeping the moods and tempos at a steady pace, while "Halfjack" is more on the playful side, shooting out tidy little melodic twists amid its rawer and more off-kilter percussion.

  1. All This Love That I'm Givin' (3:53)
  2. Maybe I'll Find Sombody New (3:25)
Review: For those of a certain age, Gwen McRae's "All This Love That I'm Givin" will always evoke memories of Cassius' French Touch classic "Feeling For You", which sampled it heavily. It remains a killer record in its' own right, though, as this timely reissue proves. Originally released in 1979, it sees McRae at her powerful best, delivering a potent message to an errant lover over a killer, low-slung disco-funk groove. It's one of the tracks that should really be in any discerning funk, soul or disco DJ's collection. Flip for original B-side "Maybe I'll Find Somebody New", a breezier chunk of laidback soul with a slightly Southern lilt. It's good, but pales into insignificance compared to the brilliant 'A' side.

Review: Largely found bashing out bastardised machine jams on Dark Entries, Bill Converse makes a logical move to Tabernacle for this new double pack of devilishly decent burners for the adventurous end of the night. The nagging hisses and end-of-days bleeps on "Tinnitus" will get right under your skin, while "Permission" stomps out a broken down jack to get the waifs and strays shaking. "Borealis" takes star-gazing techno into a particularly noisy dimension, "Operation" channels the spirit of Jamal Moss-minded acid freakery and "Mutiny" depicts the unkempt groove left after the breakdown of the hardware. "Awakening" ends things on a brighter note, twisting out grubby acid lines through some beautiful but distant chords and a snaking set of blown out drums.

Compact eight track digital drum machine & sampler
Notes: Beat making powerhouse:
Compact, rugged and to the point. Digitakt is a formidable drum machine. With an astounding feature set and an exquisite digital sound engine, the stage is set for a striking encounter.

Rhythm is a fundamental part of music. Off-kilter beats, four on the floor workouts, polyrhythmic excursions all serve the same purpose. They provide musical structure and sometimes they even make us dance.

Digitakt is a new compact drum machine from Elektron. It contains all the necessary tools to make people move to the beat. A digital and highly flexible sound engine, sampling capability, a live-friendly sequencer, the means to control external MIDI gear. Round it off with a super crisp OLED screen and wonderfully tactile back-lit buttons. Done deal.

Drum machines are something of an Elektron speciality. With the Digitakt we show why.

Complete computer integration:
Overbridge is a breakthrough technology. It allows Elektron analog instruments to be handled as software plugins. Your computer has become a new gateway to the unmatched sound of true hardware.

Full plugin control:
Shape your sounds and handle your patches with precision. The instrument specific software plugins are intuitive and beautifully designed, making analog circuitry more accessible and easier to manage than ever.

Audio streaming:
Record multiple Elektron machine voices to your computer. Or add warmth to DAW tracks with the analog circuitry of the Elektron machines. Always in complete sync at all times. One USB cable is all it takes.

Total recall:
All sound settings on an Elektron machine can be automatically recalled when you load a DAW project. It is quick, easy and simply works. Overbridge offers ultimate convenience. It is a time saver.

Review: After briefly appearing as one of those enigmatic Sahko white labels, we weren't sure if Konstellaatio would be pressed up for a general release, but thankfully, our Finnish friends are wary of our electronic needs...This LP is Classic Mika under his O guise - one saved primarily for his most contemplative works - and it's one of those releases that will capture you from the start and make you want some therapy at the end of it. Rich, textural drones running the whole way through and accompanied by sparse, doomed melodies and fluttering beats. It's a spectacular ordeal of harmonic delight. Don't wait around because these won't last for very long...

Review: Having been spotted splurging out guttural techno mischief on Super Rhythm Trax and No Logo, G-23 gets invited to Torn Hawk's Valcron Video label with more of that deviant sonic behaviour to share with the world. There is sludgy bass, strangled acid and clattering percussion aplenty on lead track "Access Code", while "Bleep Shots" throws down hard and raw with an utterly sick mix of grotty drums and gnarled synth blots. There's a Mr Husk "unmix" of "Access Code" which adds some extra melodic strains into the melee, and then "ARS Trip" finishes the EP off with some end of days tone damage for anyone left standing.

Review: HNNY's been hibernating... After over a year of silence, the Swedish Grammy winning Stockholm composer returns with another sublime full-length. Taking things even deeper into his musical psyche with more introspection, ambience and solitude, Ta Paus rejects drums almost entirely in favour of blissful atmospheric weaves and sojourns. Sitting somewhere between Eno and Lemon Jelly with his own soft emotional charm we flicker through dusky late night jazz ("Till Dig"), graceful cascading lullabies ("Pa Solen") and evocative, bluesy roadtrips ("Trettio"). A visionary piece of timeless modern composition coated with just the right amount of electronic production, this is HNNY at his sweetest. Limited on one-sided vinyl.

Review: We've not been short on material from lion of Lyon Ethyene of late. Impressively, Essence of Adolescence is the Moonrise Hill Material co-founder's fifth solo EP in the past 18 months. As usual, the five-track set is packed with dusty, jazz-flecked samples, sumptuously soulful musicality, and the kind of slinky, sun-kissed grooves that seem to shimmy from the speakers in a haze of high-grade smoke. Along the way, he fuses deep house with starry jazz-funk ("Time Flies Baby"), sultry modern soul (impeccable, vocal-laden loop jam "Cherish The Day") and string-drenched Philadelphia disco (bouncy shuffler "A Common Soul"). Typically, he's also included a bonus instrumental hip-hop workout ("E-Fuel Ov'me").

Review: Geinoh Yamashirogumi's exceptional score for cult Japanese anime classic Akira has long been on the "wants-list" of both fans and soundtrack collectors. It's been out of print since it first appeared in 1988, with original CD and vinyl copies changing hands for vast sums online in recent times. This reissue presents the composer's "Symphonic Suite" - unique because it was created as a standalone piece before the movie went into production, with scenes altered to fit the music - in all its' acclaimed glory. Musically, Yamashirogumi's compositions are hard to pigeonhole, sitting somewhere between semi-synthesized percussive minimalism, new age inspired ambient, layered vocal improvisations and electronic experimental jazz. From start to finish, it's utterly beguiling and almost mesmerizing in its construction.

Review: Gravity Graffiti have released some great work in the last year by the likes of Marcello Napoletano, Soichi Terada and Yoshinori Hayashi. It is now the turn of Danish producers Natal Zaks aka Palta and his brother Milan Zaks aka Ti. They head up the Help Recordings imprint. Starting off with the the lo-fi deep house of "Andre Hjem" while the SPCE mix up next is more sci-fi and tribal: really nice this one. On the flip, we've got the tripped out ambient house of "Det Hurtige Track" which is just made for drifting and the EP's standout moment. Finally we get treated to the most uptempo moment on the release with "Gir Meg Hen" it's just a pity it only goes for three minutes as we'd have loved to have heard those funky polyrhythms trance us out a bit longer.

Review: Horn Wax is always a trusted outpost for intriguing, often haunting forays into the world of machine powered house and techno, and so it goes on edition 11 as Perseus Traxx and Posthuman take a side each to extol the virtues of electronic exploration. Perseus Traxx is in an especially romantic mood with the blown out tones of "Manque" straining through a fog of reverb and dust, creating a truly mesmerizing jacker in the process. Posthuman by way of contrast keeps things clear and concise, preferring a sinsister, sleazy approach to acid that rides a slower tempo and sounds all the more alluring for it.
