  2. Yeah Yeah (Jimmy Rouge edit) (6:35)
Review: The clue is in the title... OTE step up with two sparkling afro diamonds right here. Two of the coolest sides of the vibe coin, too: "Back To Kingston" is a carnival meltdown-in-waiting. Acidic, stamping, scorched with horn drama and gutsy vocals, this will absolutely shatter floors this summer. The label's own Jimmy Rogue maintains the heat with a much deeper, understated funk build on "Yeah Yeah", but when that acid and those horns riff back in.... Oh boy.

  3. Better Late Than Never (5:31)
Review: Former Slum Village and Platinum Pied Piper beat maker Waajeed has thrown himself into soulful, synth-laden deep house production of late, primarily by making his presence felt on cuts by fellow Detroit legend Theo Parrish. Here he strikes out on his own with a brilliantly colourful, imaginative and on-point EP of solo productions. There's much to admire throughout, from the looked vibraphone melodies, darting brass and undulating broken house rhythms of "Shango", to the Dego and Kaidi Tatham style, jazz-funk influenced electro smoothness of "Better Late Than Never". Opener "Winston's Midnight Disco", where hushed synth-disco samples are wrapped into alien synth lines and elastic bass, is also rather fine.

Review: Hot on the heels of Monty's EP comes another barbed and bulging EP from 1985 bossman Perez. Tapping into his darker, heavier machine funk tendencies, this is Alix in 3am drum & bass dance mode: "Lucky Charm" is a purring subby low-rider, "Blips" is straight back to 2009 with its angular two-step, sinewy sound design and badman bass and "Nighthawks" is a dark soul roller with subtle samplecraft and pranged out basses. "Missing Pieces" brings us back down to earth safe and sound with a much dreamier atmosphere wrapped lavishly around Perez's light-footed beats and Javeon's distinctive soulful tones. 1985 out of 10.

Review: Having done some sterling work in reissuing the ace material from Archetype, the emergent Pittsburgh label was / is now turns its attention to cult mid-90s techno label Temple Records NYC, and this rough and ready burner from Cube 40 (a short lived outfit with close ties to Air Liquide and more besides). "You Make Me Function" is everything you want in an acid party banger, with a killer vocal hook looped into infinity and enough jack in the drums to lift and articulated lorry off the ground. "Fun House" is the more rowdy of the two, coming on strong with a Dance Mania friendly swagger and healthy amounts of 303 thrown into the mix.

  1. Zona Del Silencio (9:44)

Review: Another week, another killer release from Kiwi deep house sorts Chaos in the CBD. This one, a two-tracker on the In Dust We Trust label that they set up with pal John Sable earlier this year, is undoubtedly one of their strongest EPs to date. On the A-side you'll find the typically drowsy and atmospheric "Zona Del Silencio", a tactile and humid chunk of early morning deep house built around languid synth-bass and rolling, carnival-friendly percussion. The rolling bongo hits return on creepier flipside "Unsound Mind", the musical equivalent of stumbling through a rainforest at 3am while high on herbal remedies. As with many of the duo's productions, it subtly builds throughout, offering movement despite the hypnotic, slow-build nature of the track's construction.

Review: Fresh from '78: Brazilian funk lothario Marcelo's first big single - and a peak track from his debut eponymous album from the same year - gets a timely revisit from the Steven J's reissue/edit imprint Pepite. With its subtle piano striking Q&A, wild bass runs and clam-tight guitar/drum groove, Marcelo calls his way through the jam as if everything is a chorus. With its layered vocals, it's gutsy call to action for any dancefloor. Steven's edit stretches out the instrumental bars and brings out focus on the staccato vocal hook with a rising sense of momentum. Two great sides, one dope 45.

Review: Stephen Laubner never fails to deliver the goods, whether on his own label Something or elsewhere. Having recently popped up on The Untold Stories, this time around he's dropping his uniquely crusty compositions on Synthetic Gold. After a quietly disconcerting ambient opening, the leftfield grind of "The Taphead" pushes an uncompromising agenda of ragged bass and an unrelenting groove. "October Sunrise" by way of contrast is a more intimate, sweet natured affair. "Syntax Error" too taps into the softer side of Laubner's craft in a most mesmerizing of ways, but for the die hard fans fear not, there's also plenty of locked groove loops included to keep you tripping into infinity.

Review: Leipzig based Purple Disco Machine is up next on Australian dance-pop label Sweat It Out: carrying on the legacy of the beloved and legendary DJ Ajax who passed away back in 2014. Real name Tino Piontek, he's had a successful run of releases: appearing everywhere from OFF to Nurvous and even main room specialists Defected. Featuring the fine vocal talents of the one and only Duane Harden (who appeared on such classics as "You Don't Know Me" by Armand Van Helden) and Joe Killington of The Funktuary. An unholy mixture of bluesy country-inflected '70s rock and funky house. And let's not ignore the elephant in the room here: yes there is an absolutely jumping remix by UK big beat hero Fatboy Slim: and he's in top form as always with his party starting rendition.

Review: Dat Pressure keep digging back into the archives of main man Noodles with some of the highly sought after heat that has been fetching silly money on the second hand market. When it comes to the darker end of the garage spectrum, some of these jams are right up there with the best and so getting a chance to lay your hands on a stone cold jam like "99" is a dream come true for any true 2-step head. Beats and bass just don't come sicker than this. "Black Puppet" meanwhile lays down the law as far as wobble bass goes, proving just how pioneering Noodles was with his work as Groove Chronicles.

Review: While Amon "Aybee" Bazile rarely puts a foot wrong, there was arguably a time when his releases were a little too frequent to register with buyers. Thankfully, he's simmered down in recent years, seemingly content to just release the cream of his studio productions. Certainly, Nexus shows the producer at the top of his game. Check the deep and spacey hypnotism of "The Scroll", where dreamy chord progressions seemingly float around an analogue rich deep house groove, and the broken techno headiness of "Veger". Both bubble along at a house tempo, but draw huge influence from Motor City futurism. Perhaps best of all, though, is opener "In The", a rolling, bongo-laden saunter into life-affirming outer-space deep house blessed with a rich and warming bassline.

He's at it again here, with flipside "Mantekilla" brilliantly joining the dots between dusty, horn-heavy Afrobeat and rolling deep house. While impressive, it's A-side "Yebo" - a heavy chunk of house-tempo dancefloor dub with clear Afrobeat influences - that's really floating our boat. Either way, it's another predictably strong 12" from the experienced producer.

Review: Having spent the last 12 months sharpening his disco credentials via a variety of re-edit EPs and sample-heavy "secret weapons", Medlar is back on Wolf doing what he does best. In this case, that means sparse, drum machine driven electro/proto house fusion ("Cascinari"), delay-heavy, stripped-back analogue house blessed with dreamy chords and grime style lo-fi synth-strings ("Nisantasi") and Ruf Dug style dancefloor sweetness seemingly created using forgotten old synthesizers, dusty drum machines and a solitary TB-303 ("Priet"). Excitingly, the EP's final track - a bustling fusion of beatbox electro rhythms, layered breakbeats, heavy bass and yearning chords - is a studio hook-up with similarly well-regarded producer FYI Chris.

Review: Like all the best releases on Best, Pussycat were something of a one hit wonder who appeared and then promptly disappeared after one single in 1983. It's a wicked shame, seeing as their track "Le Chat" was a wonderful fusion of disco funk and synth pop. The vocal is catchy enough, but the "Short Dub" version is where the real heat is to be found - this isn't over the top delay wielding but rather a subtle approach that brings the strongest elements to the foreground. The "instrumental" takes you on a smoother ride, but those who want a bit more spice in their selection will be clamouring for that dub.

For their 56th (!) release they have tapped Mexican producer 4004, who has had releases also of late on FACES, Poetry In Motion and Late Night Jackin'. Smoky late night groove "No Dreams" gets things off to a good start with its smooth Rhodes, bumpy bassline and hypnotic bongo action. We particularly enjoyed the pumping NYC basement vibe of B side cut "Fanta Club" while "Black Alley Shuffle" gets back to the program in sexy and dusky fashion complete with some dusty rhythms, diva vocals and further mood lighting with the impressive use of filter sweeps.

Given that original Brazilian copies are frustratingly hard to come by, this official reissue from Far Out Recordings - who previously worked with Adolfo on his 2007 set Destiny - should be an essential purchase for all those who dig Brazilian music. A little more jazz-focused than albums by contemporaries such as Azymuth, much of "Viralata" is slick, polished and incredibly well produced, with notable samba influences amongst the unashamed tributes to leading American artists. As you'd perhaps expect, the musicianship is astonishing.

Based in Bristol, he heads up the Good Vibrations imprint, so those that are in the know certainly can expect some deep, soulful and uplifting vibes from the man here. Opening cut "Way Back" channels a familiar spirit, whether it's that of legends of 2000 Black or NDATL it's good either way. It's life affirming house music we know that much. On to the flipside, where the emotive late night mood lighting of "Star Night" will captivate with with its soothing Mr Fingers style house organs and chill beats. On this fine compilation, Spacetalk has offered the New Zealander the opportunity to showcase some of those finds, alongside a smattering of better-known favourites and more recent cuts (see Mike Fabulous's overlooked modern boogie gem "Wang East"). Predictably, Spellacey has delivered the goods, serving up humid, exotic and loved-up gems galore, including the fluttering brilliance of Stimela's "I Love You", the marimba-laden Balearic boogie of Feladey's "Forest Music" and Devon Russell's impeccable reggae-soul cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Move on Up".

Review: The Street Edits label has been playing it cool and deadly since 2013, and now hits its tenth release with two crucial jams for the heads-down party heads. JTT, a shadowy figure with links to the Bristol scene, gets deep in the chop-up on "Know 2 Much", eschewing any obvious vocal licks in favour of the heavy, rolling funk of his source material. Boogie Cafe takes a different approach with "Dynamite", letting the core of the track shine through in all its bright, brassy glory. When he does go in for the cuts and FX on the breakdowns, it's oh-so sweet though. This is how edits should be done.

On the A side, we have two ergonomic edits in the form of "That Lonely Night" and "Enchantress" respectively which are looped to perfection with some somewhat familiar hooks that gradually build up to that drop! 3. Rex Ingram
Review: Following the excellent single-sided heater from Sharif Laffrey, Discos Capablanca is back in action once again with Odopt, previously only spotted on excellent Swedish label Born Free. The record opens up with the ominous, dramatic tones of "Belgrade", all searing synth swells and bloated drums working towards some cinematic apocalypse scenario. On the B-side, "Croque Trans Croque" has a cooler head but instead aims to unsettle with its off-key metal chimes atop a steady-ticking disco rhythm, and then "Rex Ingram" finishes the EP off with yet more surreal beatdowns that will send the party in a very interesting direction indeed.

Review: Babylon is the debut 4 track EP on Dogmatik from Okain. Title track Babylon opens the EP with its rolling bass, claps and gritty rhodes, followed by the mainframe processed beats of Radio Therapy, signal processed, countercultural, surveilled. Permeable delivers another trademark Dogmatik elastic bass groove hovering above its classic pads, and the EP closes with the secret weapon, r4r5r6, reprising the same sticky groove, but backed up with a killer bass riff.

  1. How Strong Is Your Booty (2:29)
  2. So Glad (3:04)
Review: Powerful funk fire from Bristol's serial editors Mako & Mr Bristow as they hit number three in their Stank Soul Edits series. Backed by a strong gospel vibe and raw gutsy female vocals across both sides, it's another sure-fire heater: the soaring sentiments of Ann Peebles command the A with an empowering ode to the allure of love's sweet sensation while the B is dedicated to the stirring prowess of Shirley Brown. Both crafted and beat-licked in M&MB's inimitable floor-warming style, and already galvanised on the airwaves by funk professor Craig Charles, it's another stank showdown that cannot be denied.

  3. Car Car Car (Phil Kieran Autobahn remix) (6:10)
Review: For his third release of 2017, veteran producer DJ Hell has decided to celebrate the humble automobile. In other words, he's gone all Kraftwerk on us, whispering a spoken word vocal over a Teutonic new wave backing track rich in gentle synthesizer arpeggio lines, bubbly electronic melodies and subtle nods to harder alien funk. Two old pals of the long-serving DJ/producer step up to provide remixes. First, Roman Flugel provides a darker, woozier and undeniably trippy take full of bass-heavy electro rhythms and outboard effects, before Belfast's Phil Kieran nudges it further towards Italo-disco/techno territory via a mix that sounds like Kraftwerk on steroids. Impressive stuff, all told.

Review: The popular NY Underground series continues with more un-credited, dubbed-out reworks of tracks that once dominated dancefloors in the big Apple. On the A-side you'll find a terrifically trippy, echo-laden instrumental interpretation of a Bob Blank produced proto-house era classic. It wisely emphasizes the more percussive parts of the already dubbed-out original, flicking between killer organ and bass-heavy loops. On the flip you'll find a tried-and-tested revision of a Larry Levan championed Italo-disco Led Zep cover - the very same as tackled by Jamie 3:26 on GAMM earlier this year - and a thrilling chunk of EBM style dirty electro.

Here Transversales Disques present a previously unreleased soundtrack of the 1982 film 'Rock' directed by Michel Treguer. Born in 1940, Treuger is a television producer, radio producer, journalist and writer also known for the popular early '90s television series 'Les compagnons de l'aventure'. Enjoy this limited edition remaster from the original tapes. Exclusive liner notes plus artwork by Jean-Philippe Talaga. Licensed from Claude Anne Parmegiani. Parmegiani has been cited as a major influence by the likes of Aphex Twin, Autechre and Sonic Youth.
