Yossi Amoyal Presents Fluere IV
Cat: SUSH 54. Rel: 14 Dec 20
A1 People - "Do It" (Metamatics remix)
Kosmogonik - "Circuitry"
Silicon Scally - "Relay"
Matt Chester - "November Pathways"
CiM - "Recursive"
Review: Since Zip and Villalobos made it one of their coveted deep digs to be heard pealing out of a thousand after hours sessions, the Metamatics remix of A1 People has been a teasingly out of reach dream grab for many a minimal electro head. Now Yossi Amoyal has done the good deed of getting the track remastered and repressed as part of his Fluere series toasting 15 years of Sushitech. As well as that masterclass of elegant machine funk, there's also Kosmogonik's mind-bendingly brilliant 'Circuitry', Silicon Scally's body-popping electro-noir 'Relay' and Matt Chester's melancholic 'November Pathways' to keep your up-all-night marathon sets peppered with spangled surprises.

Anonym - "Go Deeper" (Kenny Larkin remix)
Soulmate - "Set Fire To My Feet" (Chez Damier Set Fire To My Feet mix)
Leonel Castillo - "Stone Peace" (Delano Smith remix)
Review: Sushitech finally unveil the second round of Tessera remixes and they've really gone to town here with contributions from Chicago and Detroit heavyweights. Kenny Larkin takes over the A Side with a superlative remix of Anonym, infusing "Go Deeper" with some vintage Motor City soul via deep organ flourishes and searing strings. This is more than matched by Chez Damier who adds some real bump to the drum programming of Soulmate's "Set Fire To My Feet", retaining the bassline throb but replacing the hopeful mood with something altogether sleazier. Finally Leonel Castillo's subaqueous exercise in filtered jazzy deepness is given a soaring once over from Delano Smith, who adds some weight to the groove and introduces delightful chords for good measure. Essential stuff!

Head On (extended) (8:24)
Triple B Dub (short edit) (5:39)
Strike Back (10" edit) (3:16)
Special Request (version) (7:33)
Review: Yossi Amoyal's Sushitech imprint never fails to impress, whether he's unearthing the new breed or it's just techno and house innovators he's paying due respect to just like underrated legends such as Steve O'Sullivan aka Bluetrain; who the label has released several volumes of work both new and old. This time it's for O'Sullivan's lesser known Bluetrain imprint. Long regarded secret weapons to 'those that know'. Foundation Dub: Chapter One features fresh cuts from the O'Sullivab studio and they've even been given actual track titles this time around, hooray! We particularly enjoyed the smoked out and glacial groove of "Friday Night Dub", the sublime bass driven dancefloor groove of "Head On" (which will work on any occasion we guarantee) or the proper and purist dub therapy of "Special Request" which keeps it as real as anything Basic Channel have done also.

Review: Benjamin Brunn and Dave Wheels are old studio buddies, having worked together on and off since 2006. "2000", though, is their most ambitious joint project yet: a collaborative album for Sushitech that offers up breezy, melodious and cheery fusions of heady dub techno, gentle electronica, chugging sofa-friendly haziness and glitchy late night hypnotism. It's an interesting blend but one that certainly hits the spot. Highlights include the horizontal pulse of "Orainge", the wonderfully hypnotic after-hours throb of "Iratamoto (Version)", the bold and sun-kissed undulations of "In The Club" and the pie-eyed warmth of "Waldeck".

Track 5 (outro) (3:52)
Review: Argentine techno producer Leonel Castillo made his first appearance on Yossi Anoyal's Sushitech imprint way back in 2006, when the label was still in its infancy. Here he delivers a follow-up eight years in the making. Deep, fluid, atmospheric and occasionally otherworldly, Deep Blue shows Castillo at his mesmerizing best. Each of the five tracks does a good job in showcasing his undulating and hypnotic deep techno sound, which sits somewhere between classic dub techno (see the final track for extra dubwise portions) and typically Germanic after-party fare. There's little to criticize, just a range of yearning, floor-friendly concoctions aimed squarely at DJs who like their techno deep, warm and enticing.

Sten - "Circles"
Mark Broom - "Gira"
Edward - "Sender"
Review: The second instalment in Yossi Amoyal's Fluere compilation run brings further leftfield house and techno delights into one place, in honour of Sushitech's 15th anniversary. First up on this 12" is Baby Ford's impeccable remix of Jin Choi, which adds extra layers of drama to Ford's trademark minimal clicks and pops. Sten's 'Circles' is a pristine, dubby tech house workout, while Mark Broom's 'Gira' sounds all the better for a modern remaster 25 years after its original release. Edward's 'Sender' finishes the record off on a nervy, unsettled note where lingering off-key tones hover over a dense and twitchy minimal beat.

Review: After having two of his earlier tunes remodelled by Carl Craig and Mike Huckaby thanks to Sushitech, Detroit's Delano Smith re-emerges on the label with a double pack of tunes made with Brawther under the D&B Productions. That moniker has more to do with the pair's name rather than a suddenly conversion to drum & bass, although there's a love of dubby effects and deep bass power here that - at a stretch - could be said to be in common. The six tracks - Symbiosis' 1-6 - are smooth and simple, but executed with an ear (or four) for an irresistible groove, an economic but rhythmic keyboard stab and a knack for squeezing something nicely soulful from the barest ingredients. Nice work indeed.

Review: Roger Gerressen launched the Monoware project last year, via a split 12" on Sushitech that also contained a killer cut from Ion Ludwig. Here the experienced Dutch producer returns to the same label with a much more expansive proposition: the first Monoware full-length. While there's one foray into head-in-the-clouds, sofa-friendly deep dub territory (the delicious closing cut), the other tracks clearly take aim at the dancefloor. These club workouts are all rooted in techno, but various draw unfluence from crackly, lo-fi explorations, intergalactic broken techno, tech-jazz, toasty deep house and the blazed, metronomic pulse of dub techno. Happily, Gerressen barely puts a foot wrong throughout, serving up tracks that are as warm and otherworldly as they are sturdy and club-ready.

Musik For The Dancefloor (6:24)
Review: The Sushitech festivities continue unabated with this bittersweet repress of an all-time classic from the much-missed Detroit figurehead Mike Huckaby. 'Baseline '87' ranks amongst his most fabled works, riding as it does around an irresistibly catchy square wave bass hook and one of those no-nonsense beats that the legendary producer did so well. For the sound of Huckaby in full flight though, 'Musik For The Dancefloor' on the flip soars thanks to the interplay between the pads and chords while retaining that steadfast focus. In memory of a true dance music hero, why not revisit a classic that should be comfortably sat in every record bag?

Review: The Sushitech label turned 15 years old in 2020 and to celebrate this milestone Yossi Amoyal has put together the Fluere compilation across four discs, plus this extended fifth part, titled Fatum. Juan Atkins' remix of 'Someone' by Killer Loop takes up residence on the A-side of this three tracker, all swirling, warm pads and spiralling filters, the percussion almost leaning towards disco with its syncopated handclaps, although the overall effect is as shiny and futuristic as you would expect from this Detroit legend. Flip it over for Terry Brookes' 'Breaking Cycles', a calm spoken word narration providing a meditational mantra to accompany the chugging house foundations, full of gentle tease. 'Limits of Likeness' by MSL completes the package with restless electro machinations and shifting clouds of synth floating across its horizon. Sheer bliss all round.

Review: Back once again on his usual stomping ground, Dutch artist Makam gives up more of the goods to Sushitech with his decisive take on club-ready deep house. The three untitled tracks on here all sport plenty of techno-minded characteristics, from chunky, chugging rhythm sections to alien melodies, with a touch of dubby meditation thrown in for good measure. The first cut finds a stout groove to wrap around, with just enough swing to make it utterly danceable while the rest of the content heads straight for the subconscious. "Track 2" has a more spaced out melodic tone while avoiding any jarring elements to upset the flow, leaving it "Track 3" to turn out a lighter if not wholly weightless kind of house music.

Starting out with the deep, dark and driving tech house of "Silhouette 1"; this is the kind of late groove that you could imagine Delano Smith or Jerome Sydenham pumping out to set the cruise control. On the flip we've got "Silhouettes 2" which really shows us how you do do proper dub techno in the tradition of greats like label mate Steve O'Sullivan or Detroit's Luke Hess: this one rolls at you deeply with a restrained ferocity that's perfect arsenal for any serious DJ's record bag.

Review: These days when Steve O'Sullivan isn't gigging his new live show or putting out records on his Mosaic Split Series you'll find him swinging with the Sushitech crew, long-time supporters of the Englishman's music. This record sees O'Sullivan inject a little more flavour than what was heard on the Interchangeable Patterns Part 1 release, and he kicks it off with a linear A1 cut that sounds like a reduced Sandwell District production boiled down to suite both the house and techno listener. The A-side's second track pitches rapid tonal bleeps against phased out percussive snaps, while the B1 delves into deeper, Detroit inspired techno. B2 cut stays in Detroit, while adding some tribal elements to mark an EP that may be the first transmission of change in O'Sullivan's trademark Mosaic and Bluetrain sound.

Review: As if the first two volumes of the Dimensions series weren't enough, Steve O'Sullivan is back on Sushitech with a final Parallels addendum to the collaborative series. On this occasion, the double vinyl set is reserved for four special longform mixes which let the ideas roll out in a truly hypnotic style. Of course, that's exactly how Ricardo Villalobos likes it and 'Short Circuit' tangles up beautifully in a mesh of interlocking rhythmic hiccups and immersive pads. Thomas Melchior holds down a sweet sustained groove for O'Sullivan's illustrious melodics on 'The Shadow' before Dana Ruh helps strip things down even further on the murmuring 'Beneath The Surface'. Soela pops up once again on 'Healing Spirals', lending a delicate and intricate touch which rounds the release off in beautiful, understated style. - vinyl only!

With a mammoth wedge of music delivered to Sushitech in the form of two double packs entitled Invisibility Chapter I & II, this single serves as a pint-sized distillation of those records for the DJs with less time on their hands. "Alternate" is right at home on Sushitech, all elegant beat programming and huge, billowing clouds of dub chord. Label regular Steve O' Sullivan is right at home on such smoky ground, although his remix on the B-side blows the vapour away to deliver a tightly woven tool for the heads down crowd.

This limited 12" kicks off with 'Specially Hot' which is a powerful house track that has long been a secret weapon for Fabric residents. The original has a freaky vocal and edgy pads and the version gets more percussive. On the flip side, the deep and dubby 'Blow Your Mind' is a real classic with wet hits and subtle spoken words over percolating bass. it's a great one for a left-of-centre closer and the version is even more mind-melting with extra synth madness.

This clear vinyl 10", limited to 500 copies, features two additional remixes that didn't make the cut. The first is from Smith himself, who turns in a brilliantly hypnotic interpretation that sounds like a cross between classic Detroit deep house and German dub techno. Ryan Elliot handles the flip, laying down a mix that bubbles and spits attractively. It's still sparse, hazy and locked-in, but benefits from some intricate percussion programming, spooky chords and a superb bassline.

This special warehouse find comes on Sushitech and finds a host of modern mainstays adding their own spin to Smith's originals. Now they land on the mighty Sushitech with a super limited, hand-stamped 12" featuring Prince Morella. It opens up with the silky smooth 'Meltem I', a liquid dub techno roller with chords rippling out to an infinite horizon as vocal muttering up top heighten the immersive trip. Part II is more icy and underwater, with rhythmic synth undulations and smooth-as-silk drum rotations locking you into a meditative state. Last of all is part III, an ambient sounds scape with subtly suggestive rhythms as you float in an underwater cavern. Classy stuff.

Review: Berlin's cultured Sushitech label is back with another of its superb reissue projects, this time focusing on a small but vital label from the 90s. Silver Pearl was where Los Angeles based producer Eric Spire released a small but steady and superb series of records that took house music into all new realms. He and his peers brought a touch of heaviness and psychedelic energy that paved the way for later developments by artists like Craig Richards & Lee Burridge's Tyrant nights at Fabric. Relive the magic of that time with this new series of carefully curated 12"s featuring high grade club weaponry.

Review: This is the fourth and final installment of Sushitech label head Yossi Amoya's reissue series focussing on the work of Eric Spire and his Silver Pearl label. The Los Angeles based producer was on a hot streak back in the late 90s, fomenting a new take on West Coast house music with hard drums and psychedelic synths that lay down something of a blueprint for later tech house a la Craig Richards, Wiggle and co. This useful 12" packs another punch with potent drums and razor sharp percussion across three cuts from some of the Silver Pearl mainstays.

Review: Sushitech presents the last part of its 15th anniversary reissues series. Timeless reworks of Paul St. Hilaire & Rhauder's now classic 2018 release 'Reconstructed', featuring legendary producers such as Rominimal heroes Amorf who provide a typically hypnotic reinterpretation of Control, Dutch minimal house maestro Ion Ludwig retains the dubby elements of the original on his rework of 'Stabilized' and likewise Steve O'Sullivan remains in glacial and cavernous territory on another sublime perspective of 'Control'. Elsewhere, Thomas Melchior serves up a typically arcane venture into the deep on his version of 'Dim Dim', while the much missed Soulphiction provides the perfect majestic backdrop for St. Hilaire's amazing vocals play centre stage on his version of 'Redeem'.

Skank (Cobblestone Jazz Reconstruction) (8:39)
Control (Amorf Reconstruction) (8:55)
Review: Last year, dub techno veterans Paul St Hillaire and Rhauder joined forces for a superb collaborative debut album, Decoded. Sushitech has wisely chosen to breathe new life into their soulful, dubbed-out exploits by handing over the parts to a string of high profile remixers. The first of three Reconstructed EPs begins with Cobblestone Jazz's peak-time take on "Skank", where St Hillaire's patois vocals ride a metronomic techno backing track rich in restless late night stabs, delay-laden woodblock hits and bleeping electronics. Flip to the B-side for a warmer and hazier take on "Control" by Amorf. Sitting somewhere between bass-heavy tech-house and head-in-the-clouds deep house, it's something of a hypnotic delight.

Review: As you'd expect, Sushitech has pulled out all the stops on this second selection of remixes of tracks from Paul St Hilaire and Rhauder's recent top notch dub techno full length, Deredoc. Ion Ludwig steps up first, laying down a rolling, peak-time take on "Stability" that wraps dubbed-out synth motifs and atmospheric snippets of St Hilaire's vocal around a chunky, tech-tinged deep house groove. Over on the B-side, British techno veteran Steve O'Sullivan delivers a deliciously dreamy, late night interpretation of "Control", before minimal house maestro naturally emphasizes the dubbier aspects of "Dim Dim" on his standout rework.

Redeem (Soulphiction Reconstruction) (7:48)
Stabilize (Leonel Castillo Reconstruction) (7:39)
Stabilize (Mark & Matt Thibideau Reconstruction) (7:22)
Review: The 'Reconstructed' series has featured reworks by legends such as Steve O'Sullivan, Thomas Melchior and Cobblestone Jazz, whose take on tracks from Paul St. Hilaire and Rhauder's debut LP Derdeoc was originally released in 2017. On the third and final edition in the series, the Berlin based duo's work gets remixed first by the Philpot affiliated Soulphiction who gives "Redeem" a truly fervent re-rub - this is utter dancefloor drama in the vein of Carl Craig. Argentinian veteran Leonel Castillo gets a slinky, bass-heavy groove on with his dub-laden rendition of "Stabilize" while the equally revered Thibideau brothers work their magic as always on their glacial re-rub of the track: where the Canadian twins take it into cavernous territory. They truly conjure those ghosts in the machines on this killer remix.

Kutchie Dub (9:04)
Review: Back in 2014, Sushitech Records persuaded UK techno veteran to release his first Wise Caucasian record in 16 years. The single-sided "Kutchie Dub" duly sold out weeks after it was released, leaving fans frustrated and Discogs scalpers licking their lips. Happily, Sushitech has decided to do a new pressing so we can all avoid sky-high second-hand prices. The track itself is simple but wonderfully effective: a rolling, hypnotic dub-house number that makes great use of a relatively limited selection of musical elements (beats, bassline, sampled reggae guitars and a few dub-wise electric piano notes). If you missed it first time around it's well worth picking up, especially as this reissue has also been pressed in relatively limited numbers.

Review: It would be fair to say that "On A Different Note", the debut album from long-serving German producer Andreas Werner, has been a long time coming. Astonishingly, it's been 15 years since he first started exploring the deeper side of techno and tech-house under the Audio Werner alias, making the album a genuine 'event' release. Happily, it more than lives up to the hype, with Werner offering up a fine selection of melodious and atmospheric, club-ready cuts and occasional forays into intoxicating, otherworldly, beat-free territory (see the weird and spaced out "Es". Highlights include life-affirming opener "Ohne", the 13-minute deep tribal techno jam "Vogel" and the inspired ambient techno outing "Alter", which has echoes of Biosphere's 1993 cut "Baby Satellite".

Review: Dutch dub house engineer Roger Gerressen released his superb Monoaware EP four years ago, and as part of Sushitech's 15 year celebrations it receives a much needed repress. The Irenic chief's distinct brand of hazy and hypnotic house of the understated kind is prevalent throughout the EP's six sublime tracks, all dialed into generous amounts of delay and long trails of reverb that add to its overall foggy aesthetic. The second track is definitely the more upbeat option to move the dancefloor with its funky and polyrhythmic groove, while the after hours option is undoubtedly the fourth track - a back room dub which gets deep enough to keep the heads down.

Review: Per Hammar and Berlin-based label Sushitech are a match made in heaven as both have long since proven their credential in the world of dub techno. As the label turns 20, it kicks off its year with an album that has been two years in the making and features a top-quality array of dub techno sounds. Malin Genie features on two of the more kicking and propulsive cuts, while Jannik Jivung adds an organic touch to two more. In between those sounds are percolating slow-mo jams like 'Representant Dubb' and more kinetic sounds like 'TX Files' with its fresh kicks and rolling bass.

Review: The now 20-year-strong Sushitech have been working on this one for two years and finally it drops - a new album from cultured dub techno don Per Hammar. This is a seriously deep journey into his signature sound that melds the genre's most classic side with a fresh modern twist. Cuts like 'Generation Drive' have a nice crisp sense of motion as well as lovely warped pads, while 'Juvial' brings a sense of curiousness with its undulating drums and bass. 'Defender' leans into sleek techno styles and will have you cruising in no time. An instant classic album, for sure.

Review: Underground Berlin outpost Sushitech is a go-to for fans of grainy, lo-fi but deep and hypnotic house tracks that veer towards techno but never quite make the full jump. After a clear up in the warehouse this Eric Miller album Flora has turned up and still sounds as vital as the day it first arrived. The five takes all roll deep, with dubby undercurrents, a decade smattering of percussion and heady vibes for days long. Each one goes but issues the time to draw you in to a state of hypnosis you will never want to leave.

Review: Steve O'Sullivan has been a prolific collaborator around the deep techno and minimal scene for a long time now, and he really hammers that point home with this expansive new project on Sushitech. Across eight tracks, the Mosaic maestro teams up with artists ranging from premier league titans like Ricardo Villalobos and Brawther through to emergent talents such as Soela and Ben Buitendijk. Each guest artist brings their particular slant to their track, but O'Sullivan's overarching deepness is the glue that binds the release together in a swirl of dubby pads. The results are consistently classy, but you knew that already right?

Review: As if the bumper Mosaic reissue package from recent months wasn't enough, Sushitech are at it again with yet more dub-techno-house gold from the vaults of Steve O'Sullivan, yet again stuffing three whole slabs of vinyl with unmissable gems from a producer only just getting his just desserts. Tapping into perhaps the most spaced out and mellow of all the O'Sullivan material, jams such as the delicate "Inside Out" ooze sophistication and simplicity that evades producers aiming for the same immersive tone in these times. With some previously unreleased wares, faithful remastering and well-aimed edits, there is no way any fan of deep 4/4 music could turn their nose up at such an immaculate selection.

The artists invited span a fair range, from established legends like Mark Broom and Steve Rachmad to inspiring newer artists including Exos and Soela.
