Review: Brazilian Jorge Ben, you could say, is a musical equivalent to football superstar Pele. He is known around the world, is hugely prolific and had a style all his own. A Tabua De Esmeralda is the 11th album the great singer-songwriter and guitarist recorded and it came back in 1974. It was soon lapped up by fans and critics alike for its timeless blending of samba rock with his unique alchemy and sonic satire and found Ben redefined the vocal style he has showcased on previous work Forca Bruta. This time his vocals occasionally go off-grid and sit behind the beats to make for an alluring effect, while the album was also the last to use guitar quite as extensively.

Review: Originally released in 1977, The World Of The Children LP featured Shamek Farrah on production duties and alto saxophone, with special guest Sonelius Smith (of David Murray Big Band fame) on piano, in addition to Kiyoto Fujiwara and Milton Suggs on Bass, Freddie Wrenn on drums, Tony Waters on percussion and Joe Gardner on trumpet. An amazing session of free and spiritual soul/jazz that defines the essence of Strata-East - the legendary record label set up by Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell in 1971. Remastered by Ray Staff at Air Mastering, Lyndhurst Hall, London.

Review: Nimbus West Records is an independent US jazz record label, founded by Tom Albach in 1979. We have a repress of Horace Tapscott Sextet's one and only release from 1981 for the label: Dial B for Barbra. Comprised of Everett Brown Jr., Gary Bias, Reggie Bullen, Roberto Miranda, Sabir Mateen with Tapscott - who many probably know from his work as The Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra - at the helm. This gem of the post bop/avant-garde jazz style fetches exorbitant prices on the secondhand market, so here's your chance to get your hands on a right classic.

Ask Me How I Sleep At Night (5:08)
Review: A supremely intriguing slice of musique concrete from new avant-gardist Eiko Ishibashi, dedicated to the much-loved Law And Order character Jack McCoy. Across only two tracks in three parts, Ishibashi lends a close, microtonal ear to only the most dubious of ambient sounds and voice, leading to an airy, stretched-out, and acousmatic feel nailed masterfully by Ishibashi and her circle of friends and collaborators. Watch out for the sudden jazz plot twist 'Ask Me How I Sleep At Night'; we're sure the fictional McCoy would be proud at being quoted so affectionately!

Review: Nina Simone has rather been written out of popular music history because of quite how confrontational and proudly Black she was. She was just as far ahead of her times musically too and this legendary album Baltimore shows why. It arrived with no promotion and no lead singles and so it was an utter commercial failure, but the sleuths of the internet have rediscovered it over the 45 years since its release and helped to make it a cult favourite now regarded as one of the best in her oeuvre. It has distinctive reggae production and of course plenty of beautiful vocals from Simone as she tackles songs written by Judy Collins, Hall & Oates, and Randy Newman.

Review: Once again landing in the mitts of jazz remastering master Kevin Gray, yet another milestone in the genre from Blue Note gets reissued. Louisiana tenor saxophonist Don Wilkerson made his debut on the label in 1962 with Preach Brother!, which featured Grant Green on guitar, Sonny Clark on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The foursome lend fearsome talent to Wilkerson's vision, which is a playful exercise in soul-jazz homing in on various vibe studies - loneliness filtered through the shake of a tambourine, city bustle conveyed via tss-tssing rides and swing.
