Review: Anatolian Weapons' 'Beyond' EP delivers six tracks that expertly blend vintage techno with a futuristic edge, reminiscent of a sci-fi film soundtrack. Opening with 'Just Dance,' the EP hooks listeners with an addictive groove and a techy, 90s vibe that sets the tone. 'All The Bones' dives into progressive house territory, offering lush, evolving soundscapes. 'Ego Naked' stands out as a fusion of EBM and darker techno, injecting an intense, moody atmosphere. 'Reality Check' plays with an 80s aesthetic, striking a balance between nostalgia and forward-thinking production. 'Acid Grind' slows the pace with a deliberate acid chugger, featuring a liquid acid line that oozes depth and intention. Closing out with 'STR,' the EP peaks with a powerful, sci-fi-influenced track that feels otherworldly, pushing the boundaries of techno. Throughout Beyond EP, Anatolian Weapons navigates through various electronic styles while maintaining a cohesive, futuristic vision, making it a compelling addition to any techno enthusiast's collection.

Review: Spectral musical favourites Ghost Box return with the beautiful third album by Beautify Junkyards. Extending the idea that junkyards aren't already beautiful in their own scrappy sort of way, Nova is an exquisite selection of junk-larked tropicalia "finds", visually (album-cover-ally) building on the news cut-up assemblages of Dada and committing them to the beatific atmospheric siblings that are trip hop, psychedelia and what we'd trepidatiously deign to call cosmic lounge. With special guests Paul Weller, Dorothy Moskowitz (of United States of America) and Jesse Chandler (of Pneumatic Tubes & Midlake), this is a thoroughly far-flung metal detecting foray indeed, but it's not the inclusion of the canonic names of 60s psychedelic rock that makes this one special, more than it is its bright, refined, verging on impeccable recordings; despite much guitar echo and analogue anaphora, nothing gets lost in mire, despite this being a nominal junkyard. Best of among the shiny things has to be 'Sonora', the star prize in this magpie's nest. These acid folk have well and truly done it again.

Remember Me (7:02)
Review: 23 years have passed since Blue Boy (AKA Scottish producer Lex Blackmore) delivered one of the biggest club and radio hits of summer 1997, the Marlena Shaw-sampling "Remember Me". Here the familiar favourite is given a new lease of life via a pair of fresh 2020 re-rubs. David Penn steps up first, expertly layering sustained Wurlitzer organ chords, gospel-style, clipped disco guitars, piano riffs and the famous vocal sample over a thickset, 21st century house groove. Frank Rizaro's remix is even heavier, with Shaw's vocalizations riding a beat that's closer to tribal techno than deep house. The head-nodding, toe-tapping original 1997 mix completes a rock-solid package.

BrightonTapes 02 (3:22)
Review: Before he signed with Tru Thoughts 21 years ago, and many years before he became one of Ninja Tune's most popular artists, Simon Green AKA Bonobo was merely a bedroom DJ/producer knocking up tracks in his Brighton home. The two tracks showcased on this limited-edition "45" date from that period and have never before seen the light of day. A-side 'Brighton Tapes 01' is warming and hazy, with toasty chords, drowsy flute and female vocal samples and deep bass rising above crunchy, loose-limbed MPC-driven drums. Flipside 'Brighton Tapes 02', which contains the same high level of vintage cassette hiss, is similarly warming, with a sweet female vocal sample, snaking sax samples and rich Rhodes chords wrapping around a head-nodding hip-hop beat.

Racing With the Sun by Chinese Man is a dynamic fusion of hip-hop, world music, and electronic beats from back in 2011 but now making its way to wax. The album showcases the French collective's signature style of blending diverse genres into something new and unusual but always groove driven and tracks like 'I've Got That Tune' and 'Miss Chang' combine smooth beats with global influences from reggae to jazz. They offer a rich, eclectic sound and the album's cinematic flair, catchy rhythms, and playful sampling make it a standout in Chinese Man's fine discography.

Review: It's certainly true that Ma Fleur represented a pivotal moment for The Cinematics. The outfit came to fruition, or at least hit the common conscience, in the haze of late-1990s post-trip-hop comedowns, a time when we were all still going harder, faster and stronger in clubs but wanted something cosy and velveteen on the after party hifi at 10AM rather than ketamine techno. Far more innocent times to say the least.

This 2007 record broke from the well established mould of the troupe, though, landing five years after its predecessor (Every Day) and opting for a more direct approach to loveliness. A kind of grab you by the throat and make you feel nice type remit that leaves the subtleties of the past behind in favour of more traditional big room, show stopping song craft.

Dis Oui! (Ben Hixon remix) (5:17)
Review: Here we have the first in a series of releases on Dolfin that celebrate the 7" format. 'Dis Oui!' by JT Donaldson is a low-slung house groove that explores a unique and catchy melodic chord structure. Featuring beautiful and elegant vocals from Penelope Antena, this is sure to be a favorite by everyone who plays and hears it. JT cleverly edits the vocals into a symphony sprinkling the song with magic. For the second side, Dolfin regular Ben Hixon, gets the remix duty. He turns the track into a dubby builder that explores perfectly placed portions of the vocal onto a tribal bed of rhythms. A perfect alternate version that is so smooth it hurts. A lot of playability for one little 7".

Review: Bristolian Nick Edwards had an excellent run of things during the 2010s, releasing cuts on Planet Mu, Mordant Music, Punch Drunk, Perc Trax and WNCL, among others. He also established himself as a highlight on the European live electronic circuit. Then things quietened off, making the personal choice to avoid getting caught up in the circus of dance music and club culture at arguably the most perilous point in its history - ethically speaking. After five years in the wilderness, Edwards is back as Eoplekz with an eight-track mini-album for Selvamancer. Straddling acid warbles, dub tech, dirty squelching weirds, subtle hints of reggae and a resolute commitment to futurism, we're not sure exactly how to label Dirtbokz, but that's exactly the point. Lo-fi analogue adventures through the wormhole, and back again.

Review: When it came to following up their surprise 1994 hit album "Amplified Heart", Everything But The Girl's Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn decided to rip up the rulebook and do things differently. Previously, their music has been considered, downtempo and - whisper it quietly - Balearic. 1996's "Walking Wounded" retained their inherent beauty and sense of melancholia, but updated their musical blueprint to include far more influences from (then) contemporary dance music. As this half-speed re-mastered reissue proves, they largely hit the spot, with warm deep house cut "Wrong", the sparkling drum and bass pop of the title track and the similarly minded "Big Deal" standing out.

Review: It doesn't take long to pick up on Harold GroBkopf's progressive and krautrock roots. Born in Hildesheim as his homeland began picking up the charred postwar ruins, his oeuvre to date includes a stint in a 1960s beat group, The Stuntmen, and then a spell playing with then-unknown heavy rockers, Scorpions, before joining Wallenstein and Ashra as drummer, and getting in on several of Klaus Schulze's solo efforts. Strom betrays much of that heritage, straddling the fine line between electronica and rock, setting out its stall in a hinterland sound that's really neither nor. At times it glitters, in other moments it grinds, sometimes its beguiling, then it's more charming, in a strange, well-left-of-the-middle kind of way. An enigmatic collection of work from a true musical enigma.

Review: Leo James is back on his own Body Language label with a sixth tasteful take on breakbeat-driven sounds. He shows his range here with different grooves all exploring different moments. 'Better Days' is one that has you gazing off to the middle distance, lost in the rueful pads. 'Olive Grove' is a slowed-down and dubbed-out sound with lots of lovely reverb and 'Burst The Gates' is a deep digi-dub style cut with angelic vocals. 'A Thousand White Kites Flying High Above The Sea' is the ambient laced downtempo closer for late-night dreaming.

Review: Parisian label InFine presents Collection, a stunning anthology of Kaito's ambient works, the project of Hiroshi Watanabe, a techno veteran with nearly three decades of experience. This album compiles remastered and re-edited tracks originally released between 2020 and 2022 on Watanabe's Cosmic Signatures imprint, offering a serene sonic journey for introspection and reflection. Collection shows off Kaito's ethereal soundscapes, blending layered drones, emotive synthetic strings, and analogue harmonies that ascend to euphoric heights. Pieces like 'Summer Mood' evoke a nostalgic beauty, blending piano-led melodies with a bittersweet sense of reminiscence. The track 'Birds of Passage' features delicate, treated textures, while 'Summer Sketch' nods to the warmth of Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain with its humanistic horns. The album's beat-driven tracks stand out, with 'Silent Cloud' echoing the vibes of Mo Wax and Massive Attack, and 'Silent Sky' delivering deep basslines and subtle details reminiscent of classic downtempo electronica. Masterfully remastered by Rashad Becker, Collection is a testament to Kaito's mastery of ambient music, blending minimalism with emotional depth. Hats off to InFine, for further solidifying his place among Japan's ambient music luminaries.

Review: Svaneborg Kardyb, the award-winning Danish duo comprising Nikolaj Svaneborg on Wurlitzer, Juno, and piano, and Jonas Kardyb on drums and percussion, have garnered acclaim for their exciting blend of Danish folk music and Scandinavian jazz. Influenced by artists like Nils Frahm and Jan Johansson, their sound is a delightful fusion of beautiful melodies, minimalism, catchy grooves, subtle electronica, and Nordic atmospheres. Their musical chemistry is palpable, underpinned by the sheer joy of playing together. Following their Gondwana Records debut Over Tage, their forthcoming album Superkilen takes its name from a public park in Copenhagen's Norrebro district, transformed by the Superflex art group to foster unity among diverse communities. This project's spirit of renewal and harmony mirrors the inventive, serene qualities in Svaneborg Kardyb's music. Superkilen promises to be a tonic for the tense and cluttered modern environment, with the duo's continued evolution and positive energy on full display. Through their music, they create space and serenity, much like the park that inspired their latest work.

Review: Ahead of their upcoming LP release on the Otis label later in 2024, the Barcelona/Brighton duo Phil Passera and Jimmy Day deliver a stunning addition to their already impressive discography with The Wild Butterfly EP. This release features three fresh tracks alongside a highly anticipated tenth-anniversary rework of their much-loved Golf Channel label classic, 'Paradise'. The EP showcases the duo's ability to craft elegant mid-tempo grooves, perfect for both dancefloors and laid-back listening. The tracks are rich with immersive harmonies, pulsating synth basslines, and dreamy jazz guitar melodies provided by guests J Felix and Royce Wood Jr. Add in some smoky saxophone layers, and you have a selection that oozes tactile and evocative vibes. Tailor-made for intimate, love-filled moments and reflective sessions alike, The Wild Butterfly EP is a beautifully layered, emotionally resonant journey that further cements Passera and Day's status as excellent purveyors of mood-driven music.

Review: Sometimes we get some wonderfully enigmatic notes with new releases and this is one of them. Rather than share them all, enjoy this one line - "Protecting the past by projecting it into the future, preserving identities, encouraging conversations across generations, and above all, safeguarding the island of Procida's vast intangible cultural heritage from extinction." Now you can ponder the meaning of that while getting lost in a collection of global grooves that span dub, downtempo, ambient jungle, Balearic and more with plenty of humid atmospheres, whimsical melodies and a general sense of mystic aura that will keep you coming back for more.

Review: We're not sure any of us would have predicted that there would be a new Propaganda album in 2024 - after all, it has been 40 years since they made their debut, and almost 20 years since 'principle song writers' Ralf Dorper and Michael Mertens last got together to record an album. Simply titled Propaganda, the album is undoubtedly a triumphant return - a set that recalls the ground-breaking brilliance of their earliest work. Sure, some of the synthesisers and sonics have been updated - it's not quite as cold and icy as their earliest explorations - and there are subtle rhythmic nods to more contemporaneous dance rhythms, but the results are uniformly excellent. For proof, check the throbbing headiness of 'Purveyor of Pleasure', the alt synth-pop bubble of 'Tipping Point', and the atmospheric excellence of 'Love:Craft'.

Review: Ethos is a brand new label from Athens that follows up its notable debut with another classy deep house offering from Jose Rico, who has long been synonymous with such things. 'Dubplates' opens up with slow, patient, warming dub house that is lo-fi and coated in misty pads. 'New Life Galactica' is another richly atmospheric deep house sound with muted acid lines and humid chords while 'Fade Out' gets a little more driving with a jumble of woody hits and golden soft focus chords. 'Future World Dreamoon' shuts down with fine broken beats and jazzy synth work for cultured and cosy backrooms.

Review: Soela, the DJ and producer alias of Elina Shorokhova, channels her deep musical roots into Dark Portrait, an album that reflects both personal and global turmoil. Transitioning from her classical background into the electronic realm, Soela crafts a sonic journey that resonates with emotional depth and technical precision. The album begins with 'Unsuitable,' a track steeped in melancholic trip-hop vibes, setting an introspective tone. As Soela navigates the complex emotions surrounding her country's invasion of Ukraine, her music becomes a therapeutic outlet. This emotional intensity flows through tracks like 'Through the Windows' (featuring Francis Harris and Philipp Priebe) and 'Drowning' (with Module One), where intricate beats and ambient textures intertwine seamlessly. 'Spirits' and 'Lost In The Fog' offer haunting soundscapes that draw listeners into Soela's world, while 'February Is Not Going To Be Forever,' a collaboration with Lawrence, brings a dancefloor energy laced with a sense of urgency. The title track, 'Dark Portrait,' melds dubby rhythms with poignant melodies while the lead single, 'Even If I Ask You Stay,' showcases Soela's poignant vocal delivery amid a lush arrangement, addressing themes of escape and healing. The album concludes with 'The Darkest Hour Before Sunrise,' a hopeful and ethereal piece, blending subdued keys and strings with a sense of renewal. Dark Portrait is a deeply personal and powerful album, where Soela's rich musicality and emotional insight shine through, offering listeners both solace and inspiration.

Review: Much-legit avant-garde, neofolk, electronica and everything-in-between string-puller Sun Araw shares Lifetime, his tenth studio album. In his own words, Lifetime continues to investigate space as a motionless field against which many motions are observed. Launching into a diabolical, verging on nonsensical descriptive tract - "stasis: wheels within and wheels without! Dripping Magnetisations! Arcs of Slowing Rotations!" - Araw's emphasis on the intended psychotropic effect of his music, as of a drug, is as prominent as ever. The record is a saturnalian topsy-turve - consisting in post-dub declensions and desert tropics, the likes of 'Lifetime', 'Porphyr' and 'Zero Declination' among them - and proves to be yet another vulturous victory in sound for the LA native / outfit.

Review: Back in 2017, Thievery Corporation's Rob Garza and Eric Hilton performed a now legendary concert in their home city of Washington D.C in which their band was backed by a fully-fledged orchestra. Three years on, they've decided to commit the orchestrated alterations to album. The results are largely superb, with the pair's slinky dub, lounge music and hip-hop influenced grooves and traditional guest vocals now coming accompanied by orchestral arrangements that veer from the subtle and sympathetic to the swooping, soaring and grandiose. Some of the versions of Thievery Corporation classics are particularly potent, with "Weapons Of Distraction" and "Lebanese Blonde" - one of their most celebrated early cuts - standing out.

Review: Cultured Swiss techno label Acquit has put together this cheeky little 7" from Trecci with one great tune on each side. 'Invisible Self' is the opener and it is a delightfully curious, inviting blend of soft focus synth loops and smeared pads that sounds like waking up on a distant planet. On the flip, 'Sit And Wonder' starts with pensive piano chords which are eventually carried away on a supple deep house grove with loopy bongos and a feel-good sense of late-night cruising. Tasteful stuff for sure.

Founded in London and now based in Ibiza, NuNorthern Soul has grown from humble roots to become one of the most popular outlets for Balearic music. Their 10th anniversary edition is a celebratory affair featuring some of their catalogue's unreleased and hard to find tracks seeing the light of day. Highlights come from Ron Basejam who lends his Midas touch to Ragz Nordset's 'You Started It All', Andi Hanley's slo-mo chug rework of Ryo Kawasaki's 'Hawaiian Caravan', Sun Fanatics going poolside on their Beatless Remix of George Koutalieris' 'Early Morning Ferry' as well as veteran of The White Isle Willie Graff serving up a slinky and hypnotic version of My Friend Dario's 'Fenice' among many more.

Review: When It Falls is a timely but classic album from Zero 7, whose music by the point of 2001 had been firmly planted chiefly among the go-to repertoire for chillout music, before the chillout room itself was ousted from the average club. Sporting such popular singles as 'Home' and 'Warm Sounds', the record also features now-stellar artists Sia Furler and Sophie Barker, pre-empting their latter-day fame with an emphasis on talent alone. The overall sound is slinky and cadenced, daring to incorporate uniques from bossa nova and lounge in what would have otherwise been an incongruous soundworld of breakbeat, trip-hop and electro; this is achieved through as much acoustic instrumentation and as many tactile recordings as possible.
