Review: If you like your jazz mystical and spaced out then you're on the right page with this one. The Blackhole label returns with a sixth self-titled offering that is buy on sight. 'More Love Songs' has whimsical leads disappearing off into the cosmic ether over mic jazz-funk drums with some breezy vocals finishing it in style. Gold (4:39)
Review: Blackhole drops a vital new 7" that features a pair of tidy edits of some classic cuts. First is a Dorothy Ashby masterpiece that has been remastered and is awash with lush, golden harp sounds and gently broken drums. It's a charming escape to heavenly melodic worlds. On the flip is 'Gold' with some masterful guitars and Donny Hathaway on piano. This is the first time this cut has been on its own 45 rpm and is one that has been sampled by greats like hip-hop kings Jay DIlla and Pete Rock.

Brass In Motion (3:35)
Review: Talented funk, jazz and soul outfit Bronze, Silver & Brass are back on Finland's finest Timmion Records with a second outing that confirms their top-shelf credentials. This latest high-grade outing opens with 'Renard's Groove which bursts forth and has a speedy, dramatic rhythm driven by tight guitar riffs and breakbeat energy, ll with hints of 1970s cinematic charm. Then comes 'Brass In Motion' which slows the tempo with a smooth, mid-paced jazz-funk groove. It balances its funky vibe with a lyrical, laid-back charm and is another gem from this increasingly essential band.

Brass In Motion (3:35)
Review: This is a clear vinyl version, though we also have the black 7", of the latest from Finland's leading jazz label. It's a great return for Bronze, Silver & Brass as they again blend brass, guitar and funky drums for a thrilling fusion of funk, soul and jazz. The A-side delivers fast-paced, cinematic funk reminiscent of 1970s chase scenes and all driven by tight guitar riffs and breakbeat rhythms. On the flip side, 'Brass In Motion' offers a mellow, mid-tempo groove with jazzy undertones and a lyrical, laid-back charm. Together, these tracks showcase the band's knack for infectious, instrumental funk of the highest order.

When The Music's Over (9:50)
I Don't Fuck Around (6:19)
Review: This project stems from the mutual admiration between Daru Jones and Devonne "DJ" Harrison who, upon discovering their collaborations with Jack White, had the idea of blending rock with jazz. DJ Harrison's vintage keyboard skills and Daru's versatility made them perfect for such a rock-influenced project. Legendary guitarist Doyle Bramhall II, a longtime friend of Mr. Mandel, was ideal for the guitar role and after several years they finally got together to record this album in 2022. The result is a first 12" single, mastered at 45 rpm for exceptional sound. Here's hoping there will be more to come.

I've Gotta Go Now (4:14)
Review: These artists got together back in 1969 to record Let The Sunshine In, a landmark album that blended jazz, rock and soul into a vibrant sound that captured the spirit of its era with its experimental soundscapes and electrifying performances. These two tunes are taken from the album and come on 7" for useful DJ deployment. Driscoll's emotive, soulful vocals pair beautifully with Auger's masterful Hammond organ and the Trinity's dynamic instrumentation. The title track in particular is a real anthem of its day and is sure to make just a s much of a mark all these years on.

Review: In early 2024, contemporary jazz cats BADBADNOTGOOD reported that they returned to the studio energised by recent international shows and collaborations with artists like Daniel Caesar, Charlotte Day Wilson and Baby Rose. The Canadian trio of Al Sow, Chester Hansen and Leland Whitty then joined with friends including Felix Fox-Pappas, Kaelin Murphy and Tyler Lott for an intensive recording week at Los Angeles' Valentine Studios. The result was the Mid Spiral series which explores distinct themes of Chaos, Order and Growth. Released initially in three digital parts, this genre-blending project now arrives on CD via XL and is another superb listen that explores how their roots in instrumental jazz fuse with hip-hop, neo-soul and funk.

Review: The great jazz trumpeter Chet Baker recorded Broken Wing in Paris in December 1978 and despite what he was going through personally at the time, it remains a showcase of his undiminished talent. The album highlights exceptional chemistry between the main man and his ensemble which featured pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Jean-Francois Jenny-Clark, and drummer Jeff Brillinger. They deliver remarkable renditions of Richie Beirach's title track, Wayne Shorter's 'Black Eyes,' and Baker's own 'Blue Gilles.' Baker shines on the trumpet and delivers a graceful vocal performance on 'Oh You Crazy Moon' making this rare but now reissued LP an essential addition to your collection.

Review: Joe Bataan's 1968 sophomore album Riot! is considered a cornerstone of Latin soul and the record that truly cemented his reputation as the genre's king. Backed by the dynamic Latin Swingers band, Bataan masterfully blends Afro-Cuban rhythms, soul and funk with his signature streetwise flair. Tracks like 'It's a Good Feeling' and the title song capture the energy and emotion of late-1960s urban life while reflecting both personal and societal struggles. Its infectious grooves, raw vocal delivery and tight instrumentation mean that this one remains a timeless classic that continues to resonate across the generations.

Review: Jorge Ben is one of the most influential Brazilian artists of his era. The so-called samba king brought all new rule-breaking style to the genre - both musically and lyrically - and fomented his own freeform acid-samba spin-off over the course of an impossibly high number of albums. One of the problems is that many of them were all given the same name, including this one, Ben. Fortunately which ever one you pick up there is joy to be had. Here there are plenty of psychedelic head twisters such as the opener 'Morre O Burro Fica O Homem' as well as deer, more soulful cuts like 'Fio Maravilha'.

Review: As you can probably work out from the title, this one is the tenth album from Brazil's samba king and genre game-changer Jorge Ben (it makes a change from him calling most of his albums 'Ben' to be honest.) It came first back in 1973 and features a collection of his then-most popular songs. All of them come from the first decade of his career but were all rerecorded as medleys. They bring with them sunny melodies and his signature stuffing grooves, acerbic and witty lyrics and easy to get lost in rhythms.

It now gets reissued on limited and numbered gatefold 180-gram audiophile white vinyl after being originally released in 1971. Review: Released to great fanfare in 1961, the second album by the original Bill Evans trio showcases their many years of refined synergy and pioneering three-way interaction. The seminal group featured pianist Bill Evans, bassist Scott LaFaro, and drummer Paul Motian and here they presented intimate renditions of jazz standards as well as three other, new compositions that became emblematic of their signature sound. Evans himself later cited this recording as one of his personal favourites in a vast catalogue which adds even more significance to its place in jazz history, as well as being a damn good listen that highlighted their exceptional musical chemistry.

Review: It's often the albums that fall between the cracks that are the greatest. Violin virtuoso and singer Andrew Bird and Americana singer-songwriter Madison Cunningham shine a light on the underrated pre-Fleetwood Mac gem of an album, Buckingham Nicks, by fully covering it. Released five years before Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham went on to have mega success with Rumours, Buckingham Nicks was such a flop commercially that they were dropped by their label Polydor. But it is a cracking album and in covering it in their own style and having a palpably strong musical connection as a duo themselves, Bird and Cunningham have done it absolute justice and changed it. They have shed the 70s pop sheen of the original and made something more timeless to behold. 'Stephanie' is moody, majestic and cosmic and 'Without A Leg To Stand On' is one of the most stirring vocal performances you'll hear in 2024. A highly rewarding listen throughout.

He is a master of Latin jazz and for this album On Fotografias he reunites with the exceptional Roberto Delgado to continue a partnership that has defined his recent work. The Grammy and Latin Grammy-winning ensemble masterfully navigates an array of styles and bring fresh energy to eight of Blades' compositions. Their virtuosity shines through rich arrangements which are a colourful and sunny mix of salsa, jazz, and tropical rhythms with seamless precision. Blades' storytelling remains as compelling as ever as his lyrics are infused with nostalgia, social commentary and poetic depth.

It features the first sextet lineup of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and showcases a young Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Bobby Timmons on piano, and Jymie Merritt on bass. Review: Canadian jazz pianist and composer Paul Bley dropped this solo album in 197 on ECM, a year after he originally recorded it on September 11, 1972. It remains a landmark in ECM's solo piano legacy following Chick Corea's Piano Improvisations and Keith Jarrett's Facing You for the way it weaves a deeply expressive narrative and includes compositions by Carla Bley and Annette Peacock as well as Bley's own innovative reinterpretations of jazz standards. Tracks like 'Harlem' and 'Started' deconstruct familiar melodies into dreamlike abstractions and offer a new approach to free balladry. As biographer Greg Buium notes, the album remains "an imperishable gem."

His journey into composition began with arrangements of pieces by Japanese maestro Ryuichi Sakamoto. These arrangements, which have previously been released digitally in three editions, are now available on vinyl for the first time. Back in 2015, he dropped Displaced Diaspora, a collection of music that was written during the same sessions that produced his hit Rye Lane Shuffle. The album features fellow pivotal nu-jazz peers in the British scene including Theon Cross, Nubya Garcia and Nathaniel Cross. It also showcases British soul vocalist Terri Walker at her best, saxophonist and Bata player Kevin Haynes with his Grupo Eleggua, and razor-sharp rapper Louis VI. Though jazz is the foundational sound, Yoruba chants, hip-hop and electronica are all mingled to make for a sonic stew that reflects the fresh and evolving sound of contemporary British music.

Review: While this may look like a reissue of a long-lost 1970s free-jazz rarity, it's actually a brand spanking new album. It is, in fact, the debut album from ever-changing collective BRAHJA, whose de facto bandleader Devin Brahja Waldman has previously collaborated with Patti Smith, Lydia Lunch and Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore. The self-titled set is pleasingly trippy, with more traditional spiritual and improvised jazz cuts nestling side by side with more experimental electrified, alt rock-influenced efforts (see "Qwikness"), delightfully out-there hybrid pieces (see "Keepers", which boasts drifting vocal chants and Terry Riley style synthesizer motifs) and spooky, early Cinematic Orchestra type fare ("Welcome To Wohlhom", "Return of the Good Enemy").

Review: Neville 'Breeze' McKeith is undoubtedly a legend of Black British music - albeit one not known to the majority of listeners. His CV is impressive; as well as being a founder member of jazz-funk outfit Light of the World, McKeith was also an integral member of Beggar & Co (known for disco hit '(Somebody) Help Me Out') and currently wields his guitar for The Brit-Funk Association. Unusually, this is only his second solo album, and arrives 41 years after his first. It acts as a showcase for his virtuoso guitar playing (he switches between lead, rhythm and acoustic guitar across the set), offering a mix of jazz-funk, fusion, contemporary jazz and soul songs and instrumentals. It's mostly new original material, but wisely McKeith has also included a handful of rather good interpretations of classic cuts.

Review: In Sommerhausen is a historical live recording from the Bavarian State Conservatory of Music in Wuerzburg, Germany, made on May 17 back in 1969. It has the talented Gunter Hampel on vibraphone, bass clarinet and percussion and is a session that also highlights the work of alto saxophonist Marion Brown, an unsung hero of the jazz avant-garde. Brown's lyrical, improvisational style is evident all across these tunes, and he is backed expertly by Hampel's rich instrumentation. Both of the deeply expressive musicians speak from the soul here while tracks like 'Malipieros Midnight Theatre' are laden with found sounds and percussion that may remind of the great Don Cherry.

Today, he is a respected figure, with his work widely celebrated, not least of course the classic 'Take Five.' While some of his 1960s material was maybe a little heavy-handed and too keen to impress at the cost of groove, Brubeck's harmonic creativity, melodiousness and swing are undeniable. His collaboration with the brilliant alto saxophonist Paul Desmond was key to his sound along with the outstanding rhythm section of bassist Eugene Wright and drummer Joe Morello. This collection, featuring tracks like 'The Duke,' 'Mr. Broadway' and 'In Your Own Sweet Way', also offers fresh interpretations of classics like 'Camptown Races' and 'Trolley Song.'

Review: Sandro Brugnolini's Overground stands as a rare gem in library music and is also generally regarded as some of this artist's best work alongside his formidable Underground from 1970. Originally released on Sincro Edizioni Musicali, it served as the soundtrack to Enrico Moscatelli and Mario Rigoni's documentary Persuasione having been commissioned by Ente Provinciale Per Il Turismo Di Trento. Featuring top Italian musicians like Angelo Baroncini, Silvano Chimento, Giorgio Carnini, Enzo Restuccia, and Giovanni Tommaso, the album traverses from underground psychedelic prog rock with swirling organs and fuzzy guitars to sophisticated lounge grooves with avant-garde orchestrations. Now remastered from the original tapes, it is one to add to the racks tout suite.

Review: Freigeweht was originally released in 1981 and marked the debut of Rainer Bruninghaus, the already legendary keyboardist from Eberhard Weber's Colours and the Jan Garbarek Group. He teamed with ECM luminaries Kenny Wheeler on flugelhorn, Jon Christensen on drums and Brynjar Hoff on oboe for this project whose leader was hailed by the press at the time as "the most imaginative musician to employ minimal art in jazz" by blending influences like Steve Reich into playfully evolving constructs rather than rigid ideology. Wheeler's and Hoff's contemplative tones enhance Bruninghaus's lyrical themes here and all are driven by Christensen's dynamic propulsion. A truly evocative classic.

Review: Brute Force was a unique jazz-funk group that released their only album in 1970 on Mann's Embryo label and had it produced by the legendary Herbie Mann. They bridged the gap between heavy rhythm and blues and the emerging jazz-rock revolution led by Miles Davis and their connection to Mann was strengthened by the inclusion of guitarist Sonny Sharrock, who played on the album's first half while also part of Mann's supergroup. Featuring Richard Daniel's distinctive electric piano and his trumpet-playing brother Ted, who went on later to become a key figure in New York's downtown jazz scene, this one has a captivating and timeless atmosphere to this day.

Review: Brian Auger's Streetnoise was originally recorded in 1969 with Julie Driscoll and The Trinity. It stands proud as a genre-blurring work of jazz, rock, folk and soul greatness that found the group moving beyond their r&b and jazz roots. Instead, Auger and Driscoll crafted a progressive, avant-garde yet deeply soulful record in which Driscoll's haunting vocals contrast beautifully with Auger's instrumentation. The gatefold sleeve was designed by Hunter S Thompson collaborator Ralph Steadman and was inspired by Hogarth's satirical etchings which in turn reflects the album's artistic ambition. Streetnoise features dynamic instrumentals like 'Ellis Island', great reinterpretations of 'All Blues' and 'Flesh Failures' and standout tracks such as 'Indian Rope Man' which highlight Auger's visionary fusion of styles.

Review: Sam Gendel is renowned for his innovative use of saxophones and wind controllers and with that he brings a fresh perspective to contemporary music. Benny Bock meanwhile is a versatile keyboardist, composer, producer and sound designer from Oakland, California who crafts evocative soundscapes across diverse styles. Hans Kjorstad is the third and final part of this three-way collaboration and is a musician and composer who specialises in contemporary microtonal music while drawing inspiration from Norwegian traditional music and experimental improvisation. Together, their unique approaches push the boundaries of modern music as they weave traditional and avant-garde elements into a rich tapestry of sound that bridges genres and challenges conventions.

Review: After years of collaboration on ECM recordings, including Characters On A Wall, French clarinettist Louis Sclavis and pianist Benjamin Moussay now present a collaborative album, Unfolding. With a program of original compositions, of which two-thirds are by Moussay and the rest by Sclavis, they create an intimate and chamber-like dialogue where lyrical moments and playful inventiveness collide. Their improvisations flow patiently and explore each theme with a rare creativity. This warm, exploratory approach highlights the depth of their musical connection, and it was all recorded at Studios La Buissonne in Southern France in March 2024.

Review: This seminal collaborative album by Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson was released in 1975 but gets a special reissue for Record Store Day 2024. It blends jazz, soul and acute political commentary with Scott-Heron's powerful spoken-word lyrics alongside Jackson's innovative woodwind arrangements. The title track reflects the duo's global perspective and highlights the struggles for freedom and equality that are still so relevant today. The album's fusion of groove, intellect and activism marked a significant moment in Scott-Heron's career. With its poignant social messages and rich instrumentation, this record remains a timeless work of political and musical significance.

Review: Often touted as a "masterpiece of jazz-funk live albums," The Wooden Glass's 1972 live recording proves it's more than just hype. Featuring vibraphonist Billy Wooten who previously played with Grant Green, this record was recorded at Indianapolis' The 19th Hole club and captures the essence of fusion driven by soulful 60s influences. Wooten's gentle melodies contrast with the gritty, distorted sound of Harold Cardwell's powerful drumming and Emmanuel Riggins' Hammond organ while the energetic performance from the band, including guitarist William Roach, creates a tapestry of intensity and dreamlike vibes. It's raw, electrifying, high-energy jazz.
