I Really Care (feat Diane Ward - vocal) (2:20)
The Great Akerman (instrumental) (2:50)
Review: Fingier Records is a new Acid Jazz sub-label that is back with a brand new 7" from The Kevin Fingier Collective. It's a real dance floor heater that is perfectly aged and authentic as it mixes up Northern Soul and r&b with driving guitar rhythms and steamy piano chords. The horns are killer but the vocal is the icing on the cake. On the flip things get Latin flavoured with the bossa-tinged mod jazz of 'The Great Akerman' which is defined by lush flute and organ vamps. This is a great taster of the full length to come from The Kevin Fingier Collective.

Review: As part of the Tramp Records tribute to German jazz legend Frederic Rabold as he approaches his 80th birthday sees the influential maverick's 'Red Point' released on 7", marking its first appearance on vinyl. 'Spring Feelings,' a track from Rabold's Time Machine album, is also included, a soulful glimpse into his creative genius. Review: By now, we should know exactly what to expect from Mr Bongo's superb Record Club series of compilations: inspired selections, across a range of complimentary styles, from the esteemed label's staff and roster of in-house DJs. Predictably, volume seven is another must-check treat, with the plentiful highlights including the sun-soaked samba shuffle of Yvette's 'Upa Neghuino', the jazzy MPB excellence of 'O Espaco' by Os Panteras, the joyous and spiritual dancefloor soul-jazz of Roman Andren's 'Captain's Sword', the gritty funk-rock of Truth & Devotion ('Bless My Soul'), the heavy disco of 'Come Inside' by The Shades of Love, the self-explanatory (but hard to pigeonhole) brilliance of Tony Wilson's 'Hangin' Out In Space (dub mix)' and the hard-to-find excellence of JC Lodge's 'In Between The Sheets', a far-sighted Jamaican street soul jam from 1993.

Review: Populous's Moonbaton Vol. 1 marks a strong return to Wonderwheel Recordings, offering a tantalizing glimpse into the darker realms of instrumental reggaeton and moombahton. With tracks like 'Flauta Magica, which intricately weaves brooding synths and dembow beats with ethereal flute melodies and 'Sapo,' a foreboding journey layered with monstrous basslines and whimsical melodies, Populous demonstrates his mastery in crafting atmospheric soundscapes. Review: Diogo Strausz has previously released on Razor-N-Tape as part of the duo Balako but now steps up as a solo artist to kick off the label's 2021. A Sao Paulista now living in Paris, he brings plenty of musicality to the slick 7", firstly with 'Emancipacao,' which is awash with melancholic keys and rich bass but also plenty of fantastic leads from both synths and sax. It's splashy and splashy and colourful disco. '50 Anos Em 5' then gets playful and funky with a Latin twist as the salsa beats an squelchy bass all make you want to spin on your heels.

Vente Pa Ca (feat Jimena Angel, Jah Sazzah & Poirier - Poirier remix) (3:47)
Review: This is a global single with a great story that starts with an afro-funk groove made by Italian Jah Sazzah. He wanted a vocal for it so turned to Nickodemus who handed his own touches and then sent it Grammy-nominated Colombian vocalist Jimena Angel. The result is a vibrant Afro tune with vivid melodies. Remixer Poirier is a legend in Latin music circles. The Montreal man has formerly been associated with Ninja Tune and is synonymous with lots of classy remixes and fresh takes on a modern Afro-Caribbean sound. This is another one that reworks the ring into a more bouncy and infectious sound with gorgeous vocals and a clean arrangement that allows the drums and perc to shine.

Plata O Plomo (5:08)
Reality For Nuthin' (3:58)
Review: Original Gravity's very own identity-invention Nestor Alvarez returns with yet another two new and hot Latin funk productions. 'Plata O Plomo' takes its namesake from an old Spanish adage, literally translating to English to mean "silver or lead", implying that the recipient of the phrase must either accept a bribe or lose their life. In keeping with this heavy-handed theme, the track is punchy and surface-tense as a bullet yet to exit the barrel. Meanwhile, 'Reality For Nuttin' gets at an equally nihilistic and existential theme, all while finding joy in the conundrum of life with huge rhythm guitars and pop-out pianos and brasses.

Review: Number 80 in Mr. Bongo's Brazil.45 series shines a spotlight on two iconic 80s tracks by Brazilian legend Jorge Ben. The A-side features the infectious groove of 'Curumin Chama Cunhata Que Eu Vou Contar (Todo Dia Era Dia De indio)' from the 1981 Dadiva album and paying tribute to Brazil's Indigenous tribes. On the flip, 'Rio Babilonia' delivers a classic Brazilian-boogie vibe that celebrates life in Rio, its beaches and landmarks. The song 'Meshkalina' was by a psychedelic and prog band from Peru called Traffic Sound and then, soon after, by Latin duo Paco Zambrano and Reynaldo Murrieta under the name Paco Zambrano Y Su Combo. The latter version is more traditional and Latin while the Traffic Sound version is more psychedelic garage rock band-like. Bossa Tres - "Imprevisto" (3:16)
Ana Rosely - "Skim Dum Dum Dum" (2:24)
Review: 'Imprevisto' by Bossa Tres and Ana Rosely's 'Skim Dum Dum Dum' receive well-deserved attention in their remastered reissue by Mr Bongo. Bossa Tres's track, featured as the final piece on their 1965 'Em Forma!' LP, stands out as an unmistakable Brazilian jazz classic. Opening with a dramatic intro and a hypnotic piano line, the song evolves with panned percussion and upright bass, showing the band's refined musicality honed from their early days touring jazz clubs in the USA. This 7" release marks a significant reissue of Bossa Tres's sophisticated sound in a concise format. On Side-2, Ana Rosely's 'Skim Dum Dum Dum' from 1984, originally released by RGE Discos, adds a different flavor with its infectious groove and enigmatic charm. Despite limited information about Rosely, her releases have become sought after for their rarity and musical quality. With 'Skim Dum Dum Dum,' her talent shines brightly within the unique style of Brazilian music. This remastered edition with refreshed artwork offers collectors and enthusiasts a chance to rediscover these gems of Brazilian jazz and music history.

Nonato & Seu Conjunto - "Cafua" (2:22)
Jose Roberto - "Crioula Multicolorida" (3:11)
Review: Mr. Bongo credit themselves with taking a selection of the most in-demand and asked-for titles in their Brazil '45s catalogue, lending them all a loving repress in due homage to the music of the nation. This time, they focus their energies on the synergy shared between the late composer and record producer Nonato Buzar and drummer Jose Roberto, both of whose contributions to the MPB canon are unmissable, referent sonic studs. Nonato's 'Cafua' is a powerful eurythmic, its strigiform vocals proving a suitable narcotic to offset to the track's otherwise restless horns and post-bossa-nova drum clacks, which hit like quick patterings against soft cartilage. Roberto's 'Crioula Multicolorida' is a more vintage recording, erstwhile bringing rare "samba rock" grooviness and reflective, call and response lyricisms to a redolent rhythm.

Jorge Ben & Toquinho - "Carolina, Carol Bela" (3:09)
Joao Donato - "A Ra" (2:32)
Review: Jorge Ben is a legendary figure in Brazilian music, often called the James Brown of Brazil, and is famous for writing the iconic anthem 'Mas Que Nada' as well as innovating within the samba sound. Amongst many other great successes, he collaborated with singer and guitarist Toquinho on the duet 'Carolina, Carol Bela' on the Brazilian label RGE. This song was famously sampled by DJ Marky and XRS for their drum and bass track 'LK' which became a global hit and topped the UK charts. Joao Donato is a renowned Brazilian jazz and bossa nova pianist who worked with icons like Tom Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, and Gilberto Gil and his track 'A Ra' appeared on his classic 1973 album Quem e quem, which has since been recognised by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 greatest albums of all time. Both of them are real Latin gems.

Rooted in rhythmic Arabic melodies, the tracks blend warm, soulful instrumentation with a contemporary edge. The production draws from Libyan pop's energetic pulse, merging traditional sounds with subtle nods to r&b and hip-hop. This is a striking example of how regional influences can be reinterpreted for new audiences while retaining their cultural depth and vibrancy.

Pancho Acosta - "Egyptian Reggae" (3:58)
Money Chicha - "Carnaval De Jujuy" (3:07)
Review: Jonathan Richman's 'Egyptian Reggae' has been setting discerning dancefloors alight since its release in 1977, during the golden era of punk. Known for its infectious rhythm, the track has seen a few reggae remixes over the years. However, it was time for something freshia playful yet respectful cumbia twist. Both genres share a certain groove, making them a perfect match, and it's easy to imagine DJs weaving these sounds together in their sets. This new take on 'Egyptian Reggae' has been recorded in Lima by Pancho Acosta, the founder and guitarist of Company Quinto, and one of Peru's finest cumbia guitarists. Acosta brings his expert touch to the track, transforming it into an upbeat cumbia gem. On the flip side, we're treated to one of Acosta's own originals, 'Carnaval de Jujuy', recorded by Austin-based future cumbia outfit Money Chicha. The song blends Peru's fuzzed-out early chicha sound with Money Chicha's unique, modern interpretation of the genre, delivering a fresh, captivating cumbia vibe.

That was a regional hit and soon after came this tune which was recorded at Paul Serrano's studio in Chicago. Add in the colourful orchestration that makes the tune soar and a you have a record that is a true musical melting pot that stood Boadi pat in his new home of the Windy City.

'My Mind' was a track that was included on his 1999 album Organism. This new version is more akin to his recent live performances of it across the world in recent tours. Perez, a true innovator and iconoclast, is a revered figure in the Latin music scene, his influence spanning decades and continents. Review: For the latest volume in their ongoing Brazil 45s series, Mr Bongo has decided to change tack. The two tracks showcased here are from the golden age of Brazilian boogie. On the A-side you'll find Marcos Valle's "A Paraiba Nao E Chicago", a largely overlooked cut from his 1981 full-length Vontade De Rever Voce. While not as instantly as infectious as some of his better-known singles, it's still superb; a breezy, blue-eyed soul cut full of rising horns and sweet Portuguese vocals. On the B-side, you'll find Don Beto's 1978 disco-funk jam "Nao Quero Mais", a superb track that was seemingly inspired by the Doobie Brothers' "Long Train Running".

Luiz Carlos Vinhas - "Ye Me Le" (2:38)
Golden Boys - "Berimbau" (2:58)
Review: The moment you put that needle down on "Ye Mele" you will know that you've lit a serious firecracker; that bold piano hook and silver harmonies have that instant classic appeal even if you've never heard it. A bona fide Brazilian classic. It's backed by a 68 track from the Golden Boys. A much more introspective fusion of late 60s American folk, Latin and Ennio-style original score music, full attention is arrested right until the stunning crescendo finale.

Faith, Luck & Music (4:10)
Review: Destination '77: Nigerian troupe The Apostles lay down their third album Banko Woman. And, with it, this widescreen vibe excursion that's been a go-to for Afrobeat diggers since it was released on Love Day 40 years ago. "Banko Woman" is a firing, energetic funk jam layered with vibrant levels of instrumentation that gradually strip back at points to let you feel the raw tempo of the groove. "Faith Luck & Music" is at once both more bluesy, thanks to the sliding, melting guitars, and spiritual, thanks to the traditional rhythm and chords. A rare and long-awaited reissue.

Review: Last time we heard from Cleon and Jazzy Pidjay, otherwise known as Last Bongo In Paris, was back in 2013 on EDR...and here they are back on the same label, and out the bottom of a hat. Similarly to last time, "Bahia Swing" manages to conjure the right balance between jazz, funk and something a little more tropical, a sound and panache that is carried through to the following four cuts of juice. Our favourites are "Ritmo Loco" for its Latin energy, and the delightfully broken "Jarumba". If you're looking for something a little jazzy and saucy, but that pushes beyond the genre's natural confinements, this is it.

Deixa Nao Deixa (2:32)
Avenida Atlantica (2:57)
Review: Two powerful bossa nova workouts from 1972: Brazilian chanteuse Rose Maria delivered two incredible funk jams on Tapecar which escaped her prolific album releases and never enjoyed a repress. Until now... The Afro-Latin soul of "Deixa Nao Deixa" is all about the sudden dynamic from purring verses to emphatic, harmonic chorus while "Avenida Atlantica" takes a more straight-up funk route with its dominant horns and heavy boss break. Instant party material.

Elis Regina - "Ye Me Le" (2:19)
Senay - "En Buyuk Sansin Yasiyor Olman" (3:39)
Review: The Brazil 45 series from Mr Bongo bursts through the picture with yet another rocking 7" fire starter by two vintage pop greats - we have to say, their format simply works. First up is Elis Regina, a Brazilian singer who released a countless pop records back in the '60s, and "Ye Me Le" is a soft, seductive Brazilian soul warmer complete with blasting trumpets and that inimitable South American percussion swagger. Turkey's Senay features on the flip with "En Buyuk Sansin Yasiyor Olman", an incandescent lover's ballad that makes a welcome change to the more widely heard Turkish psych sound of the '70s.
