Don't Turn It Off (4:38)
Review: San Fran sorts 40 Thieves' classic cover of Hot Chocolate's 'Don't Turn It Off' first came out way back in 2008, though it has reappeared at various points since with fresh remixes. Here Permanent Vacation, who originally released it all those years ago, revisit it once more. The Bay Area collective's original mix (B2) remains a 21st century disco classic - a dub disco re-make layered with spacey synths and stylish female vocals - while the new reworks genuinely take it to different places. Session Victim deliver two rubs - a wonderfully glassy-eyed, Balearic-tinged, up-tempo deep house 'Extended Mix' and a sunset-friendly house 'Dub' - before Studio Barnhus sort Bella Boo re-imagines it as a loved-up and spacey blend of nu-disco and rolling electronic house.

Worship (extended mix)
Worship (Lance De Sardi remix)
Review: Following on from their 'Seraphim / Firebird' single which picked up heavy hitting support from the likes of Seth Troxler, Skream and Steve Bug the multi-talented duo deliver a sublime offering in 'Worship', along with a deeper remix from Lance De Sardi. The impressive and unique artwork accompanying the release is based on a woodcut by What's great grandfather Conrad Felixmuller.
'Worship' pulsates into life through dusty percussion and shimmering atmospherics; Qzen's spoken word vox gracefully dominates proceedings for the most part (the words of which are taken from a poem by British poet Patience Agbabi) while mechanic modulations and a cosmic sh101 hook combine to dish up a warm off-kilter techno cut with an subtle yet infectious groove.
Lance DeSardi has built up quite the back catalogue over the last decade on labels such as Black Catalogue & Planet E along with his own imprint Legwork, as a close friend of Dan and James he steps up to remix 'Worship'. His re-imagining picks up the pace somewhat by resonating a snippet of Qzen's vocal uttering "straight to my heart" over shifting percussion, soft pads and whirring atmospherics which lend themselves perfectly to her silky voice in this excellent final offering.

Review: The Manuscript mission rolls on unabated as the Ukranian label pairs long lost deep house gems with more contemporary productions. Slam Mode's "Morning Side Dr" is a gorgeous cut laden with plush synth tones to melt the hardest of dancers, while Dennis DeSantis' "Leisure" feeds touches of EBM into a mellow, dubby construction that spans styles with ease. Label boss Vincent Inc joins up with Jon Da Silva for "Thinkin About U", which Questionmarq turns into a delightfully quirky remix before Sasha Makin and Suntetic round the EP off with the epic "Drumatik".

Get Down (4:25)
Can You Deal (4:41)
Review: Athens Of The North can usually be found honing their expert craft of unearthing nigh impossible to find disco, and reissuing it in the utmost quality. However, the work of East Coast Love Affair (Euan Fryer and Nick Moore) is deceiving, as it adopts the image of one of said reissues while actually being fully contemporary music. 'Get Down' tops up a slew of master-quality releases for the label, expropriating a vocal line from obscure Minneapolis 'lo-fi' band Quiet Storm and putting it back into an entirely new, drunk-and-high instrumental context (think lasers, whistles, funk basses, an overall hazy sound). 'Can You Deal', on the flip, lends Quiet Storm a similar treatment, albeit for a cleverly hi-lo-fi disco house treatment.

Review: Map.ache and Svensol & Bender's Kann imprint has been going string since 2008, putting out a diverse mixture of dancefloor music from some of house and techno's most interesting artists. Once in a while, they like to put out some collaborative works and it's time for the second instalment of their Family Horror compilations. Plenty of fire and new faces on this one, and we're particularly digging Hiver's "Egeo", a cinematic opener with an aqueous sort of feel to it, "Kokobay" by QY and the acidic "Track 6" by Perm. Wild and multi-faced.

Review: Leipgig's QC Records is back this week with QC Passed 3, featuring a bunch of artists all very familiar to the label. On the A side of you have Karo with the electrifying, neon-lit house of 'Not A Toy' followed by Marvin Uhde aka Qnete's expression in deep, late-night mood music on '2072'. Over on the flip, he collaborates once again with Carmel (Reece Walker) on the uplifting 'Vierfecta' featuring a mesmerising chord progression that just has to be heard. Finally, and in a surprising turn, M. Ruffing serves up some liquid drum 'n' bass vibes on the FM and acid-laced stepper 'Fischtreppe'.

Qubiko - "Talking To Myself" (5:44)
Leftwing : Kody - "Mallet" (6:34)
ESSEL - "Try" (5:27)
Review: Toolroom Records are partly responsible for the recent upsurge in jackin' deep house in the early 2020's; this sampler record, the second in their compilations EP series, serves as yet another tour of their grand new deep house estate. Delusions of grandeur are expressed on 'You Are A God' - which, for a track so deitylike, measures itself with rather a lot of restraint - while 'Talking To Myself' contains a vocal sample that is so mouthy and infectious that we really are beginning to believe ourselves to have been possessed by Metatron. 'Mallet' swerves into tribal territory, while ESSEL's 'Try' could be a contender for dance-chart-topper, assuming its piano weaponry is effective enough at swaying the radio pluggers. Joyous stuff.

Review: Session Victim's Retreat label delivers a heavyweight fifth instalment of the Treats various artist series, opened by the stutter-whistling and good vibes of Jamie Lloyd's "Spiro Hustle". Session Victim's contribution is "Much Too Strong" as it's dope, deep and jammin'. Johannes Albert's provides the calypso funk as does Mr Beatnick, only in a more of an electronic fashion, plus a bit of acid. Quarion brings his signature bleepy arpeggios to Retreat which follows on from Kim Brown's starry "I Am Batman". Iron Curtis, as we knew he would, provides a fuzzy, upbeat "Love Commitment" while Robert Oh ends on a hip hop, downtempo vibe with "Blush". One of this years best various artists releases so far!

Review: For those not quick enough to pounce on the upfront hand stamped white label versions that surfaced towards the end of last year, Swiss label Enterbt present the finished edition of their second joint release with Chez Damier's Balance Alliance. Every bit as potent as the inaugural dual endeavour, Mini Sampler EP Two Part 2 begins in fine form with the astounding "People" from Marcello Napoletano. You are not likely to hear a more impressive slab of rhythmically driven loose analogue funk bristling with percussive ingenuity this week! Less chaotic but no less impressive is Timnah Sommerfeldt's "Feel Me Up" - lifted from her 2010 debut on Balance and still impressive here, all deeply soulful vocal intonations over a subtly filtered flex. On the flip, Quike's debut on vinyl "Da Basslover" shows a true appreciation of how to structure and execute that classic old school house sound. It's complemented by the slower beatdown vibes of Demetrio Giannice's "Changes" which features a vocal turn from Mr Damier himself!

Review: Carsten Jost, Lawrence and Bianca Heuser's Dial Records imprint recently celebrated 15 years in business with the CD-only All compilation of previously unreleased fare. Here, some of those tracks come to vinyl for the first time. Stefan Tcherepnin kicks things off with the delicate, Japanese-influenced downtempo pop of "I Want To Be Art", before DJ Richard reaches for the Detroit techno cymbals and jazzy chords of the wonderfully wonky "Zero". Nephews - "Between Your Soul" (5:17)
Peter LC - "We Were Alright" (5:28)
Habibi Grooves - "Groovebox Grooves" (5:12)
Review: Small Great Things' ninth release continues its dedication to deep, soulful house with a richly curated compilation, highlighting standout moments from a variety of talent. Luca Olivotto opens with 'Let Me Go', a track layered with emotion, where delicate piano chords and a steady groove intertwine, setting the stage for what follows. His ability to blend sentiment with danceable structure is unmistakable, making it an elegant opener. Next is Quadrakey's 'Do It Right', which is as smooth as it is groove-laden. Tight percussion and a gently insistent bassline keep the energy high without ever overstepping. It's a track that works in both intimate settings and larger roomsicrafted with precision but delivered with ease. On the flip side, Nephews offer 'Between Your Soul', a deep vocal cut that showcases their knack for texture and atmosphere. Warm pads and driving basslines anchor the soulful vocals, creating a rich, immersive experience. Peter LC's 'We Were Alright' brings a heartfelt touch, with smooth chords and poignant vocals that hit in all the right places, leading to a subtle but powerful impact. Habibi Groove closes the collection with 'Groove Box Grooves', the rhythm driving home the essence of this release. A masterclass in restraint, it's a track that speaks to the compilation's overarching cohesion, leaving a lasting impression.

QX-1 - "I Won't Hurt You"
The Freeze - "Psychodalek Nightmares"
Odori - "Number One"
Angel Corpus Christi - "Dream Baby Dream"
Review: To complement Dark Was The Night, the latest excellent commercial mix of Optimo's storied discography, Mule Musiq have pulled four considered highlights from the CD for this 12" sampler. Listening to the four tracks featured here in isolation from Dark Was The Night only magnifies what accomplished DJs JD Twitch and JG Wilkes are, and highlights their digging skills with the period in which the music originally surfaced covering the late seventies and very early 90s. "I Won't Hurt You" from QX-1 is sleazy, suggestive deep house from the early 90s that will appeal to fans of same era K Alexi Shelby, whilst "Psychodalek Nightmares" is a killer new wave from The Freeze. Odori's "Number One" is super rare deep house from '91 with a killer S&M drum snap and a surfeit of new age samples whilst "Dream Baby Dream" from Angel Corpus Christi has last track written indelibly into it's DNA - no surprise then that it closes the mix!

La Pioggia (The Rain) (version Idjut) (5:54)
Review: Straight from the heart of Italy in 1991, Q-Base's Atmosphere EP remains a deep house masterpiece, and a prototype for modern day coinage "downtempo" at that. Made by Andrea Gemolotto and Claudio Zennaro, 'Atmospheres' provides not just atmospheres but geospheres, lithospheres, exospheres, and stratospheres of sound, arresting the full potential of the frequency spectrum between its languorous and unhurried beats. The pioneering DFC label saw to its claim in deep house history, and now it's back in a newly repackaged edition, featuring the three timeless tracks from the original 1991 release alongside a powerful bonus: the Idjut Boys' electrifying 1999 remix.

Il Sole (The Sun) (Deep mix) (8:10)
La Pioggia (The Rain) (Tribal mix) (5:27)
Il Vento (The Wind) (Underground mix) (4:19)
Review: For those without a deep knowledge of vintage Italian dance music, Q Base was a relatively short-lived, turn-of-the-90s project from producers Andrea Gemelotto and Claudio Zennaro. The project's most celebrated release is undoubtedly 1991's Atmosphere EP Vol II, which added nods to Motor City techno and spacey, pitched-down grooves to the then popular Italian deep house blueprint. Here the EP gets a deserved reissue. There's much to admire, from the proto-beatdown chug of slow house gem 'Il Sole (The Sun) (Deep Mix)', a heady an intoxicating affair that boasts some wonderfully immersive chords, to the pitched-down tribal house hedonism of 'La Pioggia (The Rain) (Tribal Mix)', to the rolling, dubbed-out goodness of closing cut 'Il Vento (The Wind) (Underground Mix)'.

Review: Ultimo Tango are feeling the current trance-powered moment with this killer VA split release, which opens in style with the proto-typical 1990 throbber 'That's The Choice' from Italian duo Q Words. Needle originally released the A2 track 'I.J.O.' in 1994, when the trance sound was more firmly established, but that doesn't stop this highly-desired track from happily skipping between house-minded uplift, technoid exploration as well as trancey immersion. F*O*X released 'Once More' in 1993 - another one-shot project lovingly gathered up and revived on this essential record for any Italo-trance devotees looking to avoid monumental secondhand prices.

Review: The Black Venison label are back with their release and this is the follow up to Die Roh's scorching Lancia Delta EP from earlier this year. We don't know anything about the currently anonymous Q3A project but we can sure hear that they know how to make some badass house-techno hybrids, and "Apocalypse" is just about as raw as you can get for a deep house cut. Over on side B, "Beyond Reality" takes some stepping, tape-kissed beats and pounds its way through a Chicago kinda vibe, whereas "Facing Worlds" is all about the percussion: dusty, swinging flurries of drum machines goodness to get you out of that chair and onto the floor.

Dresden (6:12)
Review: Prior to joining up with Lobster Theremin for this volume of their white label series, Qnete's output had largely consisted of powerful but spacey tracks in an intelligent techno-meets-classic Detroit vibe. While hints of that style are still present on his first Lobster Theremin outing, there's a much more "classic deep house" feel throughout. Opener "A Luv Jam" comes across as the sort of expansive, star-gazing, Larry Heard inspired jam that moves the head just as much as the feet, while "I Might Be Wrong" doffs a cap in the direction of the Motor City whilst retaining an early '90s feel. As for flipside "Dresden", it offers a magical fusion of fizzing, Chicago-inspired drum machine rhythms and spacey, almost endless deep space chords.

Review: Those of a certain vintage might hear clear Swag influences in "Closer", the opening track from Marvin "Qnete" Uhde's latest E.P. Like the best work of the once mighty Sheffield tech-house pioneers, the track mixes spitting, swinging drums with alien electronics, metallic sound effects, and just the right amount of melodious intent. This attention to rhythmic detail is also evident on the more techno-minded flipside "Spittin", which makes great use of densely layered bongo hits, fluttering chords and bowel-bothering sub-bass surges. He rounds things off by doffing a cap to vintage Detroit techno and Mood Hut style new age house on the picturesque and spacey "It's A Beautifully Sad Song".

By The Way (9:13)
Review: The QNQN crew tends not to say much in public, choosing instead to let DJs make up their own minds about their occasional EPs of "straightforward underground jams, ambiguous edits and unmistakably sexy grooves". Their latest missive only boasts one track, but it's a rather good one. "By The Way" sounds like a sneaky rework of a clandestine, grumpy and occasionally dark tune from someone like (but most likely not) Depeche Mode. It's vocal samples and chords are drowsy and atmospheric, but the accompanying beats and bassline are a far jauntier, floor-friendly proposition, sitting somewhere between choppy electro and hot-stepping UK garage. It's a curious combination but one that works exceedingly well.

The Night Watch
Review: Metropolis- is it an actual city or a digital fantasy; a construct formed inside a synthetic brain? Either way this is the soundtrack to a city that exists somewhere. A place that comes alive at nightfall and breathes artificial light until dawn. Where millions of human threads interweave, and a machine conciousness drifts by on the periphery, searching for an intimate connection. Limited pressing. Vinyl, tape and digital.

Dedication
Review: Mark E's Merc label resurfaces with a new name at the helm in the shape of Quaid, who may be based in an East London studio or indeed some fantasy fire laden digital realm known as Metropolis. What we have here are two prime slabs of neo futuristic machine funk - apparently influenced by years of treating ears to the sounds of Prince and The Egyptian Lover. Lead track "Watchbeat" chirps into action, the thick stumbling bass drum coaxing out the uneasy textural intricacies that drive the track ever forward in full flight. Throughout you get the sense the production is teetering on the brink due to the sheer weight of its various elements, but onwards it moves. "Dedication" streams forth brilliantly with recycled soul and could easily be mistaken for a Sound Signature release, the various vocal harmonics weaved deep into the rhythmic template and what's so impressive is how the track seems to constantly fizz in different directions, never attempting to settle into one groove. Excellent release!

Easing Of Tension
Review: The second invitation this week from Millions of Moments to traverse the outer echelons of expertly crafted dubbed house and it's another debut release on the imprint; this time courtesy of Quantec. Anyone who has indulged in the producer's output for a multiplicity of imprints including Styrax and Echochord - or indeed his sumptuous refix of Aaron Carl for the MoM imprint - will have an inkling of what to expect and naturally Schienhammer doesn't disappoint. Frosted Basic Channel rhythms run throughout the opener "Sub-System", gently easing through the aural mist atop crisp metallic drums, a sensation that pours into the accompanying languid charms of "Substratum" - all dreamy panned soundscapes laying down the mood before a gentle rhythmic staccato urgency arrives. "Easing Of Tension" is perhaps the most luxuriant offering here, stretching a thick sonic soup all the way across the B Side and willing you to fully engage your senses.
