Review: Following DJ Richard's crucial LP Dial round out another fine year with a debut album from self-styled "open collective" Dawn Mok, whose debut came with a fine contribution to the 15th anniversary compilation. Featuring creative input from an international cast of musicians encompassing the US, Asian, and European heritage, Dawn Mok are a curious addition to the Dial cause. Spearheaded by collective founder Felix Mura and vocalist Bundi, Eternal Love shares more with r&b than house or techno, but the best part is that we hadn't heard this type of music ever come out of this label. There are plenty of more abstract moments too, of course, and the tracks that are more on the pop side of things are still drenched in a thick layer or ambient gloom. It's minimal r&b, Dial style.

  10. Fantasy (4:18)
Review: Many would argue that Roman Flugel has been making All The Right Noises for the best part of two decades. Certainly, the prolific German producer's vast catalogue boasts way more hits than misses, with this latest full-length - his third for Dial - being amongst his strongest work to date. After beginning with the slow burning, late night ambience of "Fantasy", the former Alter Ego producer gently raises the tempo throughout, moving from the off-kilter, experimental techno hypnotism of "Dead Idols" and sparse, out-there dancefloor moodiness of "Warm & Dewy", to the ghostly house shuffle of "All The Right Noises", and John Carpenter-meets-Black Dog creepiness of "Planet Zorg". Throughout, it's hugely thoughtful and atmospheric.

A Life Without Notifications
Cat: DIAL 075. Rel: 23 May 18
Deep House
  1. I Open My Eyes (6:23)
  2. Wear Your Life Like A Loose Negligee (5:29)
  3. Sheltered Light (8:49)
Review: Somewhat remarkably, A Life Without Notifications not only marks Alan Abrahams' first new material for two years, but also his first release on the admirable Dial label. All three tracks are typically positive and melodious, with the affable South African once more showcasing his love of colourful synthesizers and tactile electronics. Of the three, it's arguably A-side "I Open My Eyes", where mournful pianos, squelchy synth-bass and drifting vocal refrains ride a bongo-laden, up-tempo deep house groove, that makes the biggest impression. That said, the deeper, jazzier drum machine rhythms and toasty Fender Rhodes keys of "Wear Your Life Like a Loose Negligee" are little less than delicious.

Review: It would be fair to say that Tom Ruijg AKA Tracey is an artist on the up. Since making his debut on pal Tom Trago's Voyage Direct label back in 2017 he's developed his sound further via quietly impressive releases on Aus Music and Midland's Intergraded imprint. Now operating on Dial, "Biostar" sees the Dutch producer deliver a debut album of hissing, analogue rich lo-fi treats that draw influence from deep electro, Boards Of Canada style IDM, Rephlex-esque "braindance", distorted industrial music, spacey ambient, acid and rhythmically punchy '80s electro. There's so much going on that it will take a few listens to really sink in, but it's more than worth the effort; as debut albums go, "Biostar" is up there with the best of them.
