DJ DSK - "Check Out The Technique" (feat Akil & Mysdiggi) (2:58)
Review: This internationally-flavoured vinyl 7? is a raucous celebration of hip-hop culture. The All Stars team who have crafted the a-side is made up of a load of talented veterans a.k.a. DJ DSK, Whirlwind D, Chrome, Specifik and Mr Wonderful. They pool their skills for a heavy dance floor celebration of Shanghai b-boy outfit Juice Crew that pays fine homage to MC Shan's original '88 classic 'Juice Crew Law'. On the flip, DJ DSK Jurassic 5's Akil and Mystro offer up 'Check Out The Technique' which has a more 90s vibe.

The Belmont Shadows beef up an acapella version of 'Kiss Him Goodbye' where you'll hear the drummer get wicked over cuts and beats from one of the top DJs of the west coast. On the flip, we have a tough breakbeat-heavy Latin version by Wilson D N that has never been on a 45.

Teddy Bryant - "Time To Move"
WOZ301 - "Cotton Mouth"
Review: Riffing off of his recent sophomore album, street soul and R&B artist Teddy Bryant joins forces with German Funk producer WOZ301 to provide what's sure to be one of this summer's many dancefloor anthems. 'Time To Move' recalls the similarly pithy, glitzed-out disco-funk of the eponymous song by Carmen, except Bryant brings not only a lower register but also an excess of irony to the form, crafting a whole new narrative around the idea of movement, while letting on his excitement at the sight of us. On the B, WOZ301 puts together a Modern Funk banger with 'Cotton Mouth': heavy bass stabs paired with playful squealing synths.

Review: Chicago-bred, now Brooklyn-based beatmaker DJ Rude One is by now a firm part of the underground hip-hop scene He made his biggest impression with 2016 LP ONEderful which picked up critical acclaim and plenty of fans as well as shining a light on new names like Westside Gunn who have also become stars in their own right. They link up again here on this new 45rpm 'Supreme Trunks'. It's a low-slung beat with spacious drums and minimal detail apart from an edgy synth loopy that marries with the slow, purposeful mic work. Limited to just 400 copies, this is a real treasure.

Warren Lee - "Underdog Backstreet" (DJ Platurn remix) (3:53)
Review: Five years have passed since Superjock launched the Nola Breaks series of DJ-focused funk reworks. Here the New Orleans-based imprint offers up installment number nine, handing over the reins to local legend Professor Shorthair and Bay Area scratcher DJ Platurn. The former handles the A-side, wrapping the Enticers' fuzzy funk gem "Thief" - as sampled by Mos' Def - in fat new breaks and tight scratches. On the flip, DJ Platurn has his wicked way with Warren Lee classic "Underdog Backstreet", wisely extending the intro and outro breaks while also adding some tasty new samples.

Freedom - "Get Up & Dance" (DNA edit) (4:03)
SWV & Wu Tang Clan - "Anything" (DNA edit) (4:31)
Review: The Originals crew has decided to end 2020 in the same way as it began the year, by delivering fresh "DNA Edits" of two classic, in-demand floor-fillers. On side A they presented a tightened up, chopped-down, "45"-friendly revision of Freedom's 'Get Up & Dance', a 1979 disco-funk number that has been sampled countless times by hip-hop producers. The edit makes much of the party-hearty feel of the original version, flitting between the lolloping, horn-laden breaks (the portion most often heard in rap records), and the lesser-celebrated vocal parts. Over on the flip they provide a dope re-edit of one of the many tracks that samples 'Get Up & Dance': SWV's 1994 R&B classic 'Anything', featuring rap verses from none other than the Wu-Tang Clan.

Meetings (Kenny Dope edit) (3:09)
Review: When Kenny Dope paid homage to Fab Five Freddy's game-changing Wild Style score in 2014 he amplified its legacy with 100 power moves. Often bootlegged, never bettered, Dope brought every element popping and locking into the future. Not reissued since its release three years ago, Dope's label Kay Dee have sneaked out 150 of each 45". "Gangbusters" is a midnight creeper (with just a little 80s daftness) while "Meetings" remains as intense and cynical as it was 34 years ago. Masterful.

Review: Back by Dope demand, MAW man Kenny unleashes a highly limited 150-only 45" from 2014's much-needed remaster of Fab Five Freddy's seminal Wild Style score. Here are two of its many block-rocking gems; the slinky Kool & The Gang-style street struts of "Military" and the classically-toned bumblebee tracing "Busy Bees" where a faint buzz rises with intensity over a slower, smouldering break. Down By Law (Kenny Dope edit) (3:43)
Subway Beat (Kenny Dope edit) (3:07)
Review: Back in 2014, Kenny Dope's Kay-Dee label released a sumptuous 7" box set featuring killer re-edits of the breakbeats and groove tracks that were originally recorded for Charlie Ahearn's pioneering 1983 hip-hop movie Wild Style. Since that box now goes for serious money online, the Masters at Work producer has decided to reissue two of the set's most potent rework. On the A-side you'll find his version of Fab 5 Freddy's "Down By Law", where impressively deep and woozy synths ride a low-slung post-punk bassline and punchy funk break. On the flip, the Dope one serves up a DJ-friendly extension of Grand Wizzard Theodore's "Subway Beat", where woozy Moog lines wrap themselves around a snappy drum machine beat and rubbery slap bassline.

Wouda Boogie - "Jam In Pumpwork"
Review: In the summer of 2005, we from Dopeness Galore hooked up with the jazz label Timeless to start a project which ended up in this LP: 'The Timeless Interpretations'. Timeless is a famous jazz label founded in 1975 in the Netherlands. The label holds a catalogue consisting of more than 700 titles of the most highly anticipated jazz artists of our time, from which only a few are revealed on this album. To shine a new light on 'Timeless' and give people who don't know about the label the chance to re-discover, Dopeness Galore connected with the finest contemporary producers who were given the freedom to create this LP as free and versatile as the word "Interpretation" can be interpreted. Much like Timeless, the artists on this record are no newcomers in the music game. Most of them have been around for some time, but are not known by the big audience. This record brings them and Timeless together, it represents what's going on right now, and gives you a peek at the future of music. Dopeness Galore is proud to finally present you the album, gaining to be as timeless as the interpreted artists.

Record Collection 2012 (Plastic Plates remix)
Review: The latest all-star emission from French label Kitsune sees the divisive producer celebre Mark Ronson call on a list of his famous friends on "Record Collection 2012" which comes lined with the usual array of remixes. Featuring Pharrell Williams, Wiley, MNDR and Wretch 32, the original is as odd as you'd expect, being the sort of pop track that doesn't occupy any particular genre but sprinkled with just the right amount of crossover dust. CSS lead the remix selection with a throwback electrohouse circa 2007 effort, whilst French types Logo embellish the track with some scratchy darkness. Check the flip for a bolshy disco refix from Moonlight Matters with some overbearing orchestral flourishes, whilst LA based Aussie Plastic Plates turns in perhaps the best remix, discarding with the majority of vocals - MNDR's chorus only remains - in favour of building a lysergic dancefloor groove.

Review: Snoop Doggy Dogg's "Doggystyle" was released in November 1993 on Death Row Records and became the first debut album ever to enter the charts at number one, helping to fuel the ascendance of west coast "G-Funk" rap. The singles "What's My Name" and "Gin & Juice" were able to reach the top ten played songs in the country, and the album remained in the charts for several months, even as controversy raged over Snoop's murder trial and his allegedly violent and sexist lyrics. Gangsta rap became the centre of arguments for censorship and labeling, with Snoop often used as an example of violent and misogynistic musicians. Here now for your listening pleasure, with lyrics and themes full of ethical deadening we all enjoy, arguably the number one west coast party classic of all time, "Ain't No Fun" with a never before available instrumental version.

Review: Beautiful Shibuya-esque hip jazz from Wa Yo Set, the dazzler jazz-funk band and fan favourite of the Urban Discos roster since 2020, when the quartet released their debut record, Boogieback. 'Don't Let Me Down' is their latest single for the label, and is rather like nothing we've ever heard before, overlaying a raspily swung vocal rap flow from MC KZ against a superbly improvised arrangement mixing snappy drums, classical guitar, double bass and alto sax. On the B is the similarly speedy 'Konyawa Boogie Back', an instrumental cover of the J-pop duo Halca and Yucali's 2009 chart smash.

With Biggie having spat near infinite wisdom on this playful pop diversion - "it's like the more money we come across the more problems we see" - this killer 7" version takes heed, limiting its quantity to fewer than 1000, in case demand outstrips supply and concerns of fan rapaciousness bubble over. This opening gambit is a real show stopper with Wally Puma and Jim Sharp mashing up myriad different R&B and hip hop sounds into popping new jams. Label boss Puma takes care of the A side with a hybrid blend and crafty remake of two old school anthems that are deep cut and groovy. Review: "Touch The Sky", has Kanye testifying about how fly & dipped he is when he walks into any spot. Using an obvious Marvin Gaye sample, this one will have the dance floors moving! "The Import" features Lupe Fiasco & has an instrumental also. On the flip side Common & Mace join Kanye on the remarkable "Jesus Walks" remix. This is a must have!

Desire (feat Mae Rojas) (3:39)
Sun King (3:53)
Review: It's been a while since we heard from Westbrook who was last heard, by our reckoning, on a funky 7" on Omega Supreme. Canada's Outrun is a label that deals in similarly boogie-tastic sounds and that's what we get here. 'Desire' is a lush analogue jam with leggy drums and crispy claps all finished off with killer bass patterns and a vocal from Mae Rose that recalls Erykah Badu. On the flip things slow right down to a seductive late-night crawl with bass guitar funk, twinkling keys and leads full of longing.

2 Stings (2:50)
Review: Two remix-mashups come courtesy of Hoffstein under the pseudonym 'Westside Doom', dedicating some well-known MF Doom acapellas to some new instrumentals. The producer behind these cuts is Eets, who lends murderous, xylophonic moods to Doom's '2 Stings', while an even slower instrumental, full of lolling strings and warring ambience underpinning Westside Gunn's alto raps.

Review: Westside Gunn's latest project, Hitler Wears Hermes 8, shows his adeptness as a curator rather than a central figure. The confrontationally prolific Buffalo rapper strategically incorporates dynamic guest appearances throughout both halves of the album, allowing them to shine while he takes a more subdued role. Gunn's writing exhibits moments of brilliance throughout. The album's smart sequencing and near-uniform excellence of guest verses highlight Gunn's skill as an A&R, with interludes further enhancing the album's atmosphere. While each half of the project leans heavily on collaborators and mise-en-scene, the overall result is a supremely competent yet somewhat forgettable addition to Gunn's discography. Notable moments include standout tracks like 'TV Boy,' where Gunn's delivery shines amidst grimey production, and collaborations with Mach-Hommy, showing their chemistry.

Review: "Low-key label Hoffstein are doing the necessary work of pressing modern-day gangsta rap singles to 7" vinyl, putting newer artists in a classicized light. This split 7" from rapper and former Shady Records consignee Westside Gunn sees his two singles 'Rolacks', 'Free Ike, Free Kiki' and 'Over Gold' immortalised in a twinkling, sample-heavy and unfuckwith-able manner. For anyone itching for a slice of unshatterably confident hip-hop in their lives, and a throwback to a moment laid to recording only 3 years ago, then look no further than this gem from the Buffalo native.

Over Gold (2:13)

Review: Buffalo rap icon WestsideGunn gets the reissue treatment courtesy of Hoffstein on this tidy 7", which brings the DJ Daringer-produced 'Rolack's' back in reach. On the A side we get the vocal and instrumental, which finds the man known as Alvin Worthy flowing in his distinctive, tightly-wound style over a warm and soulful beat from Daringer. The instrumental lets the beatsmith's cuts fly, and there's plenty of them. On the flip things get darker as 'Over Gold' strikes a noirish tone before 'Free Ike Free Kiki' slows down and freaks out in a haze of low-slung brilliance.

Review: Following up that last one in April which featured 'Strange World' & 'Purple Desire', When Doves Cry are back with their third release and it's said to be by two well known DJs on the scene - who wish to remain under the radar. As the name may well suggest, we have a perfectly pitched down R'n'B number that many will be familiar with called 'I Wanna Be 5 Semitones Down', which comes with a handy instrumental edit over on the flip. Through dewy pads and echoing percs, they concoct a late night anthem for the club and the bedroom.

Review: This 7" delight is the first release on Big Apple Ish, a new imprint dedicated to the classics from hip-hop's historic urban incubator - New York City. Two NYC hubbubers, 'Big Apple Ish' by The White Cheese Posse, and 'All 4 The People' by Naughty NMX, come as raucous paeans to the emotions New York intends to instil in its residents - the feeling of being surrounded by opportunity at every turn. Of streets paved with gold and opportunities for hustling cropping up at every turn.

White Girl Wasted (instrumental) (3:39)
Review: White Girl Wasted is a production partnership made up of Lawrence Lord and Sonny Sathi, and they're striking out big on their debut bout as White Girl Wasted. The UK duo hit their stride four years ago when they started putting the beats and raps together for 'Barz Simpson', but even they couldn't have predicted such a positive and generous delivery from the late, great MF Doom on the track after they took a punt on sending it to him. As if that wasn't enough, they then tapped up Jay Electronica for an additional spot, rounding out an essential cut that sounds just as dope in instrumental form on the B-side.

Review: Daupe! reissues a killer track by White Girl Wasted, a UK hip-hop duo composed of producer The Purist and rapper/producer Sonnyjim. 'Barz Simpson', affectionately punned after a certain famous yellow ten-year-old brat, features two of the most revered MCs in the game. MF DOOM and Jay Electronica deliver witty and intricate rhymes - 'freemason, freebasing' - over a singular, lo-fi, herbalized beat. A rare vinyl gem for hip-hop heads - don't sleep on this 7".
