Burning Spear (reissue)
Cat: OGR 878R. Rel: 15 Jan 25
Nestor Alvarez - "Burning Spear" (3:40)
La Machine D'Argent - "Burning Spear" (5:37)
Review: This is another reissue of a record that remains an ongoing favourite. Original Gravity delivered again with the original pressing featuring two unique versions of 'Burning Spear'. Nestor Alvarez opens with a lively, Latin-inspired rendition filled with fluttering flute melodies, raw drum beats and vibrant dancing keys that radiate sunny energy. On the flip, La Machine D'Argent takes a more cosmic approach, smoothing the vibe and layering spaced-out sounds for a dreamy, immersive journey. This release showcases Original Gravity's knack for reimagining funk with flair by offering two distinct yet equally good takes on a timeless groove.

Kylie Auldist & Skinny Dipp - "Back For More" (3:36)
Kylie Auldist & Lincoln Room - "Party At My Place" (3:27)
Review: "I'm like a monkey with cocaine" goes the vocal on the opening tune here but that conjures up images of quite a riotous scene. In fact, the music is superbly seductive, cool and calm, with low slung disco funk, lush cosmic chords and a laidback, almost aloof vocal all soothing the soul and making for some nice dance floor intimacy. After that collab between Kylie Auldist and Skinny Dipp, Kylie hooks up with Lincoln Room for 'Party At My Place' which has an odds school instrumental disco feel embellished with low slung grooves and lovely claps.

Review: Destination Martinique: Sofrito's Island Series gets lively to the sound of Michel Bagoe and the brilliantly named Les Hamsters. The former lays down a sublime carnival soundtrack with relentless drums and a highlife feel to the guitars while the latter develop the street party feel with rippling drums and tightly plucked guitars. Guaranteed to whisk your dance to another world, just like the rest of the Sofrito discography!

Turn It Up (acappella)
Review: Australian band The Bamboos have been holding down things on the funky side of town since 2001, gaining fans all over the world with their authentic, dirty funk nuggets. In the same vein as bands like El Michels Affair or Breakestra, these guys are students of the classic breaks that underpinned the sample-hungry glory days of hip-hop. They've also had the incredible honor to back up some of funk's most revered names, notably New Orleans hit-machine Eddie Bo, Syl Johnson and Eddie Floyd.

Ahead of their new album 4 comes single "On The Sly", a perfect slice of mid-tempo joy, which has the same rollicking cowbell-driven vibe as classic UBB staple "Get Me Back On Time, Engine Number 9" by Wilson Pickett. Soulsides MC and singer Lyrics Born joins them on 2nd cut Turn It Up, another popcorn funk winner complete with chicken-scratch guitar parts worthy of James Brown stalwart Jimmy Nolen. Hanging out with the Aussies seems to have rubbed off on the Californian MC, as he even sings "Turn it up mate" at one point! DJ's get taken care of with an accapella and an instrumental too, making this release a good way to put some funk back in your trunk.

Ray Barretto - "Right On" (2:43)
Latin Brothers - "Las Calenas Son Como Las Flores" (3:57)
Review: Raroraro rev up the rarity engine once again with this sunkissed Latin double-up. Ray Barretto's heavily sampled (but seldom bettered) "Right On" gets the A: a hammering piano hook, whirlwind percussion and big horns, it's an instant carnival that's still as fearless as it was it was in 1970. Columbia's Latin Brothers' take us five years forward with "Las Calenas Son Como Las Flores". A much more smouldering number with a little more island magic in the horn arrangement, this one builds from sunset to a fiery sunrise. Limited to 200 copies.

Beat Spacek - "Alone In Da Sun" (5:50)
Lukid - "Hair Of The Dog" (4:33)
Review: Well Curated is a series of releases and parties that - in its own words - "reflects the ethnomusicology of the last 50 years of music" - and aims to reach into all genres, merging classic styles and breaking down barriers. Steve Spacek occupies the A-side with the breezy broken beat and soul-in-space of 'Alone In Da Sun', while Lukid's 'Hair Of The Dog' is a more intense counterpart, with wobbling sub-bass and swirling, surging atmospherics hovering above.

Galaxy Vol 7: Thelonious Beats Gillespie Edits
Frankie Seay & The Soul Riders - "Soul Food" (Thelonious beat Gillespie edit) (4:34)
Lyn Christopher - "Take Me With You" (Thelonious beat Gillespie edit) (3:28)
Review: If edits are your game then the Galaxy Sound Co is certainly the name. Along other labels like Mukatisuku, these dudes know how to repackage lost and rare soul 7"s, and this new two-headed funk bullet from Thelonious Gillespie is just painfully on target. The first edit is of "Soul Food" by Frankie Seay & The Soul Riders, a moody, dusty percussion bomb brimming with breaks and a grainy guitar accompanied by fine brass waves. Lyn Christopher's "Take Me With You" is pruned and reshaped into a glorious soul ballad with a hard edge, and a driving rhythm led by gliding electronic guitars and an inimitable bassline. Fine work right here.

Jimmy "Bo" Horne - "Hey There Jim" (2:34)
Lynn Williams - "How Can You Call Love Fascination" (2:26)
Review: Jimmy Bo Horne brings his raw and expressive vocals to this new release on Japanese label Ultra Vybe. The oft-sampled America singer, writer and producer has been turning out such sounds since the mid 70s but remains on top of his game here. The big horns bring energy, the rolling rhythm section gets you up on your feet and the whole thing screams floor filler. On the flip is Lynn Williams with 'How Can You Call Love Fascination,' a much more slow and sensual soul tune with acrobatic vocals and nice piano fills next to a big horn section.

Faith (dub) (3:49)
Review: On his previous releases as Booker Gee, Guillaume Metenier has employed his immaculate organ-playing skills over a range of killer funk and soul grooves. Here he flips the script, delivering atmospheric, fluid Hammond solos over some dub-wise reggae grooves played and produced by Spanish multi-instrumentalist Lone Ark (real name Roberto Sanchez). Both Metenier and Sanchez are in fine form on opener 'Auxmites', a bass-heavy head-nodder that sounds like Lee 'Scratch' Perry producing Jimmy Smith. 'Faith' is a little sunnier and warmer, with Metenier's solos working in perfect unison with Sanchez's glistening guitars, jangling pianos and skanking rhythm. Both cuts come accompanied by pleasingly spaced-out Dub revisions courtesy of Sanchez. Top stuff!

Brazilian Singers - "O Telefone Tocou Novamente" (2:56)
Los Belkings - "Septima Partrulla" (2:16)
Review: The Budabeats imprint is a welcomed addition to the funk and soul reissue game, and this third instalment from the label is exactly what we need to be hearing right now - something upbeat, tropical and rare in its original format. On Side A, you got 1971's "O Telefone Tocou Novamente" by the Brazilian Singers, and it's a wavy, magical psych-funk bombshell in the same vein as Marcos Valle's best work. On the flip, there's a special surf-rock-inspired song by Peru's Los Belkings and, yes, it's from 1969 and still sounding like a total monster almost forty years later. Recommended!

Warm Rhythm (vinyl extended mix) (6:30)
Scape (vinyl extended mix) (7:17)
Review: Bs As Deep and Lucio De Rosa combine their skills into a new EP that offers up warm, jazzy house cuts for cultured club settings. First out of the blocks on the Onward label is 'Leading You' with lush filters, plenty of jumbled and organic percussion sounds and steamy pads. 'We're The Rhythm' is blissed out and late night with cuddly drums and smeared pads enveloping you in soulful richness. 'Warm Rhythm' (vinyl extended mix) is more lovely blends of jazzy Rhodes chords, live-sounding drums and genuine house depths. 'Scape' (vinyl extended mix) shuts down with more of the same - gooey chords and romantic jazz melodies over inviting drums.

Dance Till U Can't (6:59)
Review: If you're a serious disco and boogie head, you need this record in your life. It's significant, too, being the first original track from Leroy Burgess's legendary Logg act - one of the finest disco/boogie outfits of all time - since 1981. In its original form (B2), 'Dance Till You Can't' is a sublime slab of updated, house-era boogie full of superb instrumentation, wigglingacid lines, cheerful piano stabs and a typically inspired lead vocal from Burgess, who remains disco's most talented male vocalist. If you're after a more straight-up, classic Logg style boogie sound, Marc Mac's EP-opening 'Main Mix' is the version to opt for (and genuinely brilliant), while the broken beat style 'Broken Boogie Mix' will appeal to those who love Dego and Kaidi Tatham's joint productions.

Mash Up (The Dancehall Dub)
Review: The vocals of Lady Yolanda on the mic are perfect for giving the flavour. But for those who prefer their dub straight, there's a mighty instrumental version on the 7" too. "Mash Up" has got it all going on as Missy Yolanda says herself "This is one to get the party jumping!" Mashing it up is exactly what Sonar Kollektiv does best. Weather its nujazz, funk, soul or in this case dancehall reggae, you never quite know what to expect from a label with such an eclectic A&R policy. With "Mash Up", the latest offering on Best Seven, you are taken on a journey to the roots of dancehall. It sounds as though it could have come straight out of the ghettos of Kingston rather than Bedford, England. "Mash Up" is a fat dancehall reggae number which is guaranteed to rock the house.

And so it is with this new 7", which includes a booklet, from Discodelic. It's a two tracker from Cizana and La Nueva Generation that is flame hot and bristling with energy - Cizana's 'She Sold Her Soul' kicks off with its joyous flutes, hand drums and percussive Latin grooves then La Nueva Generacion slow things down and up the brass with their carnivalesque Afro-funk workout 'Uhru Sasa'.

Review: This is the first in a two-part series from Canopy which highlights the legendary Beninese supergroup T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo, who have put out over 250 releases. Despite personnel changes, founder Clement Melome remained the band's guiding force. The title track translates as "My Fire Will Not Go Out" and has been remastered and reissued for the first time here. It's a fusion of soukous, disco and funk that features driving bass, triumphant horns and cosmic synths. Samba A L'aeroport
Review: From the label who gave us Human Egg, The Joubert Singers and The Real Fake MC comes yet another startlingly refreshing piece of jazz funk. Last Bongo In Paris (AKA old Favorite faces Cleon and Jazzy Pidjay) fire up a soft riff fusion between the horn and percussion sections while the piano confirms the Caribbean flavour you can hear on the refrains. "Samba A L'aeroport" lives up to its name; a samba, naturally, it's played softly with an over cheeriness and a cyclic loop as you'd imagine to hear played for infinity in an airport lounge. But in a 'going on holiday' kinda way and not a 'delayed for nine hours and want to kill people' type of way. Sun kissed and soulful.

Review: 5 Borough Breaks is back with more of that red hot dancefloor heat in hip-hop form with another couple of gems. The one kick off with Da Youngstas and the second single from their debut album in 1992. 'Pass The Mic' rides on crisp boom bap drums with big horns and some mad speedy mic work. On the flip, as is always with way with this series, is the sample source - namely Lou Donaldson's 'Pot Belly' from his 1970 album Pretty Things. It's a nice smooth jazz number with Rhodes chords warming it through and gently tumbling rhythms from Idris Muhammad on drums.

The title track is an old school bit of hip hop with huge drum breaks, fills and a sing-along-chorus that's all about the good times. They've recently released a slew of singles, of which this sparkling, soulful cover version of Eddie Kendricks' favourite 'Date With The Rain', featuring the silky voice of lover's rock legend Peter Hunningale, is arguably the most revelatory. Rich in leisurely but ear-catching drum machine patters, warming bass and spakrling synth sounds, the duo's full vocal cover version sits somewhere between lover's rock, street soul and mid-80s electrofunk. Fittingly, it comes backed with 'Dub With The Rain', a delay-laden instrumental take that subtly showcases the depth and beauty of the pair's backing track while also adding a little extra low-end grunt. The flipside dub of 'Rendez-Vous' is arguably even better - a jaunty boogie-reggae affair piled high with colourful synth sounds, echoing vocal snippets and toe-tapping beats.

Vincent Galgo - "African Rebel" (5:39)
Frank Virgilio - "Mistress" (5:09)
Caspar Leo - "Tom Tom" (4:54)
Lego Edit - "El Safari" (5:16)
Review: Samosa Records returns with Afrikano Vol. 3 which is a lovely Afro-themed, genre-blending EP featuring four standout tracks from trusted artists. Kicking things off is Vincent Galgo's 'African Rebel,' a 125bpm fusion of horns, driving rhythms, and Afro-pop bass. Frank Virgilio follows with 'Mistress,' a jazz-infused mid-tempo groover, packed with guitar riffs, organ stabs, and hypnotic bongos. Newcomer Casper Leo delivers 'Tom Tom,' a tribal delight featuring Kora guitar and melodic Marimba. Closing the EP is Lego Edit's 'El Safari,' a sultry Afrobeat banger that grabs hold and doesn't let go.

James Greenwood & Aniello - "Look Of Love" (5:50)
Scruscru & Los Protos - "Corason" (4:18)
Jkriv - "Moonlight Dance" (5:14)
Love Drop - "Ain't Never" (7:56)
Review: Funkyjaws Music comes though with more of that lovely loose-limbed disco goodness that is never going to fail in energising a decent danc floor. Let's Dance Volume 4 is another various artists affair that launches with James Greenwood & Aniello's feel-good 'Look Of Love' which has it all - the sweet female vocal, the florid strings, the rolling bassline and big brass leads. Scruscru & Los Protos's 'Corason' brings some Latin flavours with a more deep and seductive groove and Jkriv and Love Drop offer up two b-side jams packed with soul and irresistible rhythms that effervesce with uplifting vibes.

Hansi - "Party Is A Gruv" (3:51)
Lego Edit - "Baci Baci" (Lego ReFunk) (4:56)
Review: Following up some great edits by the likes of Delay Lama, Atoz and Wandervogel, the Lego Edit 7" limited series returns with one shot per side here, each offering a beautifully arranged, string heavy backdrop of low slung funk. On the A side, Hansi respectfully resplices a bumpin' and super soulful underground goodie on "Party Is A Gruv", while over on the flip you've got a timeless R&B anthem that's paired perfectly with a love of the wacky backy on "Baci Baci" (Lego ReFunk) by the boss man himself Lego Edit.

It's Just Begun (Hansi remix) (4:22)
Jungle Groove (Lego re-edit) (5:27)
Review: The Italian disco dons at Legofunk have another couple of belters for us here. As usual, both sides of this 7" feature an edit. The first is by Hansi who flips the well known 'It's Just Begun' into a driving and funky rhythm with rolling bass. It's a chunky one that never lets up. On the reverse, 'Jungle Groove' gets a re-edit from the in house Lego team and it becomes a loopy affair that teases the drop for ages. When it comes, big chords and raw, yelping vocals add extra fuel to the fire. Both are highly impactful.

Lance - "Yo Quiero A Lucy" (edit) (4:53)
Marta Paradise - "Calling" (edit) (4:23)
Alan Strani - "Tension Salsable" (edit) (4:58)
Review: Maledetta Discoteca closes out its year with this special blue vinyl featuring a mix of brilliant Italo disco artists. They all hail from Italy and Argentina and are editing originals that span disco, electro, proto-house and more. Hararis' 'Si No Pagan' is the first under the scalpel and is a funky cut with raw drums. Lance's 'Yo Quiero A Lucy' is a more slowed down and seductive sound with 80s synths, Marta Paradise's 'Calling' (edit) is a direct and sugar synth laced house stomper and Alan Strani's 'Tension Salsable' brings things to a closer with a nice stomping disco grove with mysterious synths and lush percussion.

Seegweed Edits Part 2
Cat: GAMM 071. Rel: 08 Jun 11
Willie Hutch - "Slick"
Los Monequitos De Matanzas - "Lo Que Dice El Abacua"
Lou Bond - "To The Establishment"
Review: GAMM waste little time in dropping the second round of Scandodelic edits from man like Seegweed who presents a trio of tweaks that straddle the lines between disco, beatdown Latin and heavenly soul. The familiar tones of Sir Willie Hutch open proceedings in richly orchestral disco style with a tweak of the iconic singer's "Slick" lifted from the OST to The Mack starring a certain Richard Pryor. Seegweed's main embellishment concerns adding some neat percussive touches as the brass heavy arrangement makes any major surgery redundant. Alongside this is a lolloping expansion of Afro Cuban act Los Monequitos De Matanzas which is caked in sonic dust. Do check the flip for Seegweed's take on Lou Bond that adds a delightful broken bump to the singer's psychedelic soul masterpiece "To The Establishment".

Horror Games (instrumental) (3:41)
Review: Teddy Powell and Zee Desmondes are The Jack Moves, a contemporary disco and hip hop outfit who here link with unknown newbies The People Of Newark and Larry Hamm for this tidy new 7" on Star Creature. 'Horror Games' has a squelchy synth bass line that carries the loose drum work and bustling methane of background vocals and found sounds. A lead singer takes charge up top as various chatting crowds play out in the background. It's a busy tune that also comes as an instrumental for those who prefer the focus to be on the well crafted drums and bass.

Review: If you're looking for some killer 7"s that offer two different soul sounds from some of the best to ever do it then you could do a lot worse than checking out all of the recent releases from Tower Vinyl out of Japan. This is number five in their Free Soul series and it pairs off some more legends. The Jackson Five kick off the A-side with 'It's Great To Be Here' which is a big energy soul jam with those characterful MJ vocals front and centre. Lexia's 'Good Morning To You' is a little more deep and emotionally stirring.

A Thing Of Beauty (7" limited to 300 copies)

A Thing Of Beauty (3:25)
Drums Of Beauty (mono) (3:21)
Review: The new joint on Wildcards comes from a hornsman sometimes known as Lucky Brown, sometimes as plain old Joel Ricci. He's done plenty of excellent work in the past, but after a few quiet years he's back in the saddle and this new single really takes the cake. 'A Thing Of Beauty' is a lilting slice of instrumental funk which lets Ricci's playing soar, and it's all rendered with a dusty, red-lining charm which will make it all the hotter in the dance as well as appealing to crate diggers hankering for more hot n' heavy grooves to sample. Speaking of which, the flip 'Drums Of Beauty' gives you breaks for days - B-boys and B-girls take heed.

Beard In Dust - "Calypso Boy" (6:01)
Nonna Fab - "Tension (Release mix)" (6:35)
Lancaster Bomber - "African Sauna" (7:11)
Review: The Apricot Ballroom crew are operating out of Sheffield and carrying the torch from the foundational work of David Mancuso's Loft parties and similarly spirited affairs like Lucky Cloud. Now they launch a label loaded with smoking hot edits that very much speak to the vibe of their parties - rich, warm 70s grooves that spring from the staple sounds of disco into cool, slick and psychedelic spheres. First up is Joi La Frique with the French flair of 'Family Rally', while Beard In Dust lays down some heavy slapping, cowbell toting funk with 'Calypso Boy'. On the flip, Nonna Fab ups the boogie mood with some nasty Moog action on 'Tension (Release Mix)' before Lancaster Bomber whips up a proto house storm with 'African Sauna'.
