Review: Doctor Bird's latest must-check double disc retrospective focuses on the work of influential Jamaican producer Lloyd Charmer during the 1970s. Each disc contains a significant, Chalmers produced album: keyboardist Harold Butler's reggae-soul/reggae-disco classic Gold Collection sits on disc one, with Debby Dobson's fine tribute to Jamaican music pre-ska, Sweet Dreams, following on CD2. In addition, each disc also features a wealth of Chalmers-produced singles and rarities, including a swathe of killer cuts from Richard Ace (the 12" version of 'Supernatural' on CD2 is particularly special), Sister Stern and Delroy Wilson. You also get a handful of surprise solo cuts from Chalmers, who of course started his music career as a vocalist-for-hire rather than a producer.

Review: Mighty Vertebrate is the International Anthem leader debut from Adelaide, Australia-born bassist and composer Anna Butterss. Having racked up many a studio credit for her bass playing on the international jazz and avant-garde circuit, Butterss now makes her debut, homing back in on her local West Coast music scene to deliver a sombre round number of unorthodox, bass-led experiments. Despite her star instrument taking centre stage as ever, Butterss works to a bulleted-list formula worthy of a performance artist, constructing her album from a set of oblique strategies including: "I'm going to make a song where the bass doesn't function in the role of a bass" and "I'm going to work on this for an hour and then I'm going to stop". Living up to the name, Mighty Vertebrate builds a structural complexion from disparate found parts, making for a mighty experimental jazz jaunt.

Review: Recorded in 1956 for producer Tom Wilson's Transition Records, Byrd Blows on Beacon Hill presents trumpeter Donald Byrd in a relaxed quartet setting. Joined by Doug Watkins on bass, Boston-area musicians Ray Santisi on piano and Jim Zitano on drums, Byrd delivers a standards-heavy set recorded on a rainy spring afternoon in the Beacon Hill home of engineer Steve Fassett. This casual atmosphere contributes to the album's easygoing charm and intimate feel. Highlights include Byrd's lyrical rendition of Joe Sullivan's 'Little Rock Getaway' and beautiful interpretations of 'Polka Dots and Moonbeams,' 'If I Love Again,' and 'Stella by Starlight.' Review: Brian Auger's Streetnoise was originally recorded in 1969 with Julie Driscoll and The Trinity. It stands proud as a genre-blurring work of jazz, rock, folk and soul greatness that found the group moving beyond their r&b and jazz roots. Instead, Auger and Driscoll crafted a progressive, avant-garde yet deeply soulful record in which Driscoll's haunting vocals contrast beautifully with Auger's instrumentation. The gatefold sleeve was designed by Hunter S Thompson collaborator Ralph Steadman and was inspired by Hogarth's satirical etchings which in turn reflects the album's artistic ambition. Streetnoise features dynamic instrumentals like 'Ellis Island', great reinterpretations of 'All Blues' and 'Flesh Failures' and standout tracks such as 'Indian Rope Man' which highlight Auger's visionary fusion of styles.

Review: The instrumental version of the underground classic Glorious Game is a collaboration between El Michels Affair and Black Thought which showcases Leon Michels' signature "cinematic soul" sound in all its considerable glory. Since the release of Sounding Out The City in 2005, Michels has consistently pushed musical boundaries and has produced for many top names. In Glorious Game, he merges soul-tinged, bottom-heavy beats with Black Thought's deeply personal lyrics and, inspired by hip-hop's sample-based production, crafts new compositions that sample and reinterpret his own work to create dynamic, loop-driven instrumentals. The album is released on Big Crown Records which marks a debut partnership which will be interesting to follow.

With a program of original compositions, of which two-thirds are by Moussay and the rest by Sclavis, they create an intimate and chamber-like dialogue where lyrical moments and playful inventiveness collide. Their improvisations flow patiently and explore each theme with a rare creativity. This warm, exploratory approach highlights the depth of their musical connection, and it was all recorded at Studios La Buissonne in Southern France in March 2024.

Review: A rare new V/A record from the diggers deific over at Time Capsule - Kay Suzuki and company - whose focus on reissues has thus far formed a dense but not unbraveable thicket of drummy disco, city pop, reggae and international rerubs. Formed out of the East London party scene centring on Brilliant Corners and Beauty & The Beat, this four-track haul of Choice Remixes is a surely credible little curation. Suzuki lends four flips to the record - first of Gaoule Mizik's 'A Ka Titine' from 2022, which reappears with expository force, providing a banging re-bake of the Guadeloupean gwoka original. The theme continues on a version of Broki's 'Es Que Lo Es', which veers Latin minimalia, before slowing to a chuggy pace on 'Sortez Les Filles', before a final, synthy piano duet leaves the proceedings on a piquant hurrah, 'Oyelo'.
