Review: For the label's latest on-point reissue, Groovin' Records has delved into the slim catalogue of short-lived Italian production duo Soft House Company. Originally released in 1990 and a dancefloor smash all over Europe, 'What U Need' is typical of loved-up Italian house of the period - all life-affirming piano stabs, tactile synth-bass, occasional synth-strings, rolling drum machine beats and cut-up vocal snippets from First Choice's much-sampled disco classic 'Let No Man Put Asunder'. Over on the reverse you'll find original B-side 'A Little Piano', a deeper and even more loved-up workout that's effectively a deep house style dub of the A-side, shorn of the vocals, featuring chunkier beats, more prominent bass, and delay-laden piano motifs aplenty.

This one welcomes Lea Lisa with her track 'Conversation Between Us' (Heide Club Mix) which is straight up underground house for the heads. Then comes an unreleased Javonntte remix of Evenn's 'One For Love' that pairs things back to raw dub essentials. Dan Only's 'Love Saturates' then gets a fine and formerly unreleased remix by Italy's Black Loops that has pristine drum programming and a fine bassline. Review: Detroit's John Beltran can do no wrong if you ask us, and what he does do is always famously varied, from sound design for TV to melodic techno excellence via ambient beauty. Here for MotorCity Wine he revisits his Back To Bahia series with a third volume that finds him flexing his Afro-Brazilian deep house chops. The 7" opens up with the jazzy boogie of Lsaura' which is steeped in Minneapolis funk and will get cultured dancefloors in a spin. Review: The trend for spaced-out electronic house sounds knows no bounds at the moment. Nolga is the latest to start into a starship and head for the cosmos on this new EP for Aesthetic. 'Voltage' is a real fist pumper with great swing and glide and smeared pads with pipettes of acid. 'Delusion' then gets all bouncy and playful with bubbling synth phrases and energetic keys. There's a hint of darkness to the bass in 'Resurgence' while '435D' has a more metallic tech edge. All in all, a high-class EP of forward-thinking grooves.

Review: A rare outing for Josh Butler's occasional Origins Rcrds imprint, which has so far released a handful of singles and EPs since launching in 2017. It sees the rising star and Kerri Chandler favourite join forces with Bontan, a fellow UK producer best known for his outings on Hot Creations and Crosstown Rebels. It features three passes on 'Call You Back'. There's the original mix, a fluid, loose and sub-heavy slab of tech-house/deep house fusion rich in undulating melodic motifs, sparse riffs and shuffling drums, a fine DJ tool based around the melodic hooks, percussive builds and vocal samples and a rock-solid build-release-build drum track built around weighty kick-drums and hissing drum machine cymbals.

Review: Nu Groove is one of those labels that everyone who knows recognises as having played a key part in the early house movement. Based out of the New York scene on the East Coast it had a distinctive 90s deep house sound which DJ Steaw now taps into but with his own twist. His grooves are jacked up and analogue, densely packed but high on warmth and soul. 'Take It There' is a prickly opener and 'Seascape' then brings some acid. 'Close To U' has a more low-slung groove that is peppered with raw claps and last of all, 'Exotica' brings some cosmic synth work to crisp, funked-up and electro-tinged rhythms.

Review: Toolroom sits at the top of the tree when it comes to big room house music. Mark Knight's label has mastered the art of maximal sounds and this eighth volume of the Tooroom Sampler series is another one that will do plenty of damage. Essel's 'Sweat' is a rigid tech cut with stiff synths and libidinous vocals, then Shiba San and Ayarez get direct with shuffling tech house cut 'Twist It' complete with big skewed synths. Friend Within's 'Pilka' keeps the energy levels high with fizzing synth loops over textured drums and a fat bassline. Maur x Westend and Cami Bear close out with some brighter melodies to get hands in the air on 'Over.'

Review: Over the summer Skepta was teasing hints of a forthcoming track which looks set to take his superstar status even further. Amy Winehouse's influence is still felt massively across the music world - the tragedy of her story collides with her natural talent to carry a huge amount of power and that's what Skepta's drawn on sampling 'Tears Dry On Their Own' from Winehouse's classic 2006 LP Back To Black. Strapping a vocal lick from the track to an anthemic deep house production, it's a focused club workout for the UK rapper, pressed up on yellow vinyl and billed as 'A Tribute To Amy'.

Review: Chicago house mainstay Glenn Underground is as good at crafting neat edits of the classics as he is serving up his own superb original house compositions. It is the former which he does here on his own label and first up on the A-side he adds his signature smooth grooves to a track but the late, great funk master Amp Fiddler. The B-side begins with his Retro mix of beatmaker extraordinaire Mos Def which has loose-limbed drums and soulful pads that reach to the heavens, then he looks to acid jazz innovators Incognito and their 'I Can See The Future' and flips it into a nice funky and drawn out house groove for vibrant dance floor fun.

Review: The Dutch pair once known as Detroit Swindle and now going by the Dam Swindle alias (they hail from Amsterdam) return on their own Heist label with a trio of well-designed sounds. 'That's Right' is a 'copy, dusty, disco-tinged house cut for sunny climates and feel-good parties. 'Minor Fools' then taps into a 90s New York house vibe with bouncy drums and bass. Last of all is 'Soul's Lament' with its laidback grooves and swirling soulful pads. A trio of excellent genre studies from this pair.

Review: Sometime Wisdom Teeth and Idle Hands contributor K-Lone has been digging drums of late, so he's decided to gather a load of percussionists, record some rhythms and serve up a six-track selection of 'Drum Tools' for discerning DJs. The key cut is lead track 'Drumz', a fine combination of drum circle style rhythms, trippy effects and dreamy synth washes. Fittingly, this is given an even heavier, pitched-up edit courtesy of Leod to round off the EP. In between these two sweat-soaked peaks, K-Lone cycles through sub-bass-enhanced Latin drums ('Cinco', the infectious 'Timbales'), weighty and tribalistic rhythms ('Bombo'), and handclap-propelled percussive deepness (the deliciously dreamy 'Clapper').

Review: Deep house producer Shuya Okino shows his class once more on another tasteful outing, this time via the Extra Freedom/Village Again labels out of Japan. For this one he revisits his 2011 album Destiny which was made with help from the Japanese funk, boogie and jazz-funk outfit Root Soul and replays and remakes the tunes. The originals become more disco-leaning and horn lead jams here with Okino's warm, rubbery basslines, P-funk synths, loose live beats and cute keys. The result is an album that sounds like Earth, Wind & Fire making modern soul and it will improve your life no end.

Review: We're always glad to hear new material from undisputed dub techno don Steve O'Sullivan. This new one on his own Mosiac label finds him facing off with Paul Simmons on a pair of deliciously deep cuts. 'Inner Glow' is given the whole of the A-side to make its mark and it does - with a slightly more soulful sound than you might expect. Rather than pure heads down underwater deepness, it's got a heart warming vocals hook and brighter chord vamps over the signature drum smoothness. 'Still Burnin''is a quicker cut with more radiant chords and a soulful spirit, then a Bluespirit dub of the a-side zones things out nicely.

Review: House music doesn't get much more storied and authentic than that served up by the iconic New Jersey label Nu Groove. It very much shaped the clary sound of the 90s and still has fans excited today whenever reissues drop. This is not that, however, and is in fact a new set of recent cuts from veteran Swiss producer Deetron and underground mainstay Bruise. The sounds are inspired by the soulful techno and house that emerged in the Mid West and build on solid drums with silky loops that look to the future. 'AM_909' in particular is a lush and warm cut of epic proportions.

Review: The brand new Hyperdrive label kicks off with a mix of the old and the new - some tracks made recently, some that date back to the 90s, all of them top quality. Liquid Earth opens up with the spaced-out synths and electronic house sounds of '1_HP_D' then Art Of The State gets a little more tranced out and cosmic on '2_HP_D'. Dan Piu's '3_HP_D' is a tech house exploration with wispy sci-fi leads and a playful rhythm then Luis Malon & Seb G combine for the turbo-charged tech of '4_HP_D.' The legendary Freddy Fresh closes down with a high-speed sound on '5_HP_D.' Says the label, "Hyperdrive is dedicated to preserving the rich history of electronic music," and on this evidence, it will do so expertly.

It is jin indie-tinged cut with vintage synths and groove-driven basslines with vocals from rising band Nothing But Thieves, whom Purple Disco Machine remixed not so long ago. Review: Divine Discs follows up its first foray into the vinyl world with a second and equally great volume in its Altered Disco series. Things get off to a joyous start with 'Dance' which is all big choruses, hip-swinging claps and big piano chords. It cannot fail to elevate any party while 'Feel' is one that goes deeper on the emotions with a stirring choir delivering uplifting vocals next to funky guitar riffs. It has a hint of gospel goodness to it while the b-side is given over to 'Never Turn Back' (Jaegerossa remix) which is a big stomping disco jam with yet more happy chord work.

Review: FR is next up on the Treasure Series label which started off so strongly, then went quiet for a while, then returned in December with some superb sounds from this same artist. This new outing is a tasteful two-tracker that starts with 'Georgie Porgy', which is a slow-motion Balearic jam lit up by some busy keys and a steamy vocal coo. It's a great one for building an early evening vibe, while 'Paradise' on the flip is blissed-out deep house with the one and only Sade adding the romance and soul.

Review: Since the 1970s Danny Krivit has been a prolific re-editor. We're used to him cutting up classic cuts - think disco and soul, in particular - but he's never been afraid to turn his talents to contemporary cuts. That's what you get on this surprise Defected release. On the A-side he turns his attention to "Heaven", the killer gospel-inspired modern disco single from The Vision and Andreya Triana, turning in a version with plenty of drops, instrument solos and more emphasis on the righteous, life-affirming vocals. He's in a smoother mode on side B, extended and rearranging the rich and soulful dancefloor treat that is Kai Alce's Original NDATL vocal mix of The Dangerfeel Newbies' "What Am I Here For?" - a gem from 2016 that has previously been criminally overlooked.

Review: The Florence label actually started a decade ago back in 2023 and it has not rushed things in that time, so only now is it making its way to a 15th outing - although it also now has a 7" funk off-shoot. This one is another cultured deep house sound that recalls the work of Hamburg's Smallville crew. It comes for the in house production outfit and is cuddly and deep to start with, then disco laced and utterly feel good on 'Bphect' and dark and more tech edge on the trippy 'Cphect'. Last of all is the curiously hard to define but swaggering deep house of 'Dphect' which we think samples... Cliff? Four beguiling tunes.

Review: An ultra-depthy broken house production from fellows Roberta and Fawziyya Heart, 'Take Our Time' is a seeming exercise in how many top frequencies one can lop off, yet still use in service a sense of excitement in stasis. The self-declared House Gangster recently impressed on Dam Swindle's Heist Recordings label and now makes this way to the always-assured Toy Toncis outlet. Review: Edinburgh-based Peacey had a little help from label boss Martin 'Atjazz' Iveson and the latter's old pal Clyde on debut single 'Hold Me Back'. He's gone solo on 'Culture Bandit', which like its predecessor is a taster for Peacey's forthcoming debut album. In its original form (side A), the track blurs the boundaries between 21st century Afro-house, the liquid, melody-driven fluidity of Atjazz's early works, the spoken word-sporting mid-2000s nu-jazz of Ursula Rucker (an effect heightened by Vanessa Hidary's brilliant beat poetry) and the dancefloor spirituality of Osunlade. It's fitting, then, that the latter delivers a typically percussive, musically rich and tech-tinged Yoruba Soul remix, with Martin Iveson delivering a typically fluid, deep and tactile Atjazz revision.

Review: After many years turning out 12"s, Klasse Wrecks has decided to serve up a first-ever 10" and they give the honour to Mr. Ho. His '000 Baby' is a delightfully widescreen sound - a post-rave mix of comedown electronics, dusty breakbeats and soothing ambient pads with some smart vocal samples drifting like wispy clouds. On the flipside, we're treated to and OM Unit remix that beefs things up and speeds up the drums. The percussion too is more defined and the energy levels ramped up with deft 808 bass and searching acidic leads. A nice yin to the A-side's yang.

Review: Toronto native Demur is a master of groovy, funky deep house and has been since his fine debut TruSkool back in 2016. He has been busy of late with Visions back in March finding him collaborating with the likes of Fred P and Aaron Gray. Now comes another full length in Under The Waning Moon, another compelling mix of contemporary deep house sounds, well-sourced and deployed samples and elements of everything from jazz to funk to downtempo colouring the grooves. Review: Hailing from the brilliant, tangled web orbiting Future Sound Of London, Mental Cube was one of Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans' short-lived side projects which found them indulging in the bleep and acid house sound. Given the talent at the controls, it's little wonder this release became such a holy grail - a misfit twist on the conventional formula of club records at the time and yet still as satisfying as any of the more widely played early 90s hits. This is the first time the release has been reissued in its true original form, meaning both mixes of 'So This Is Love' and the 'Santa Monica Mix' of 'Q'. Listen out for the cheeky nod to 808 State on 'So This Is Love' - a respectful tip of the hat rather than a cheeky lift, we'd say.

Review: Alton Miller doesn't get spoken about as much as he should - he is a genuine Detroit pioneer who played the city's earliest house parties and decades later he is still turning out authentic and emotive deep house. Here he debuts on Mister Bear Records, a new imprint out of Berlin. First up is 'Am Forplay', a mid-tempo roller with heady chords slowly moving through the scales next to smoky vocal coos. 'For Me' is a more edgy and energetic sound with wispy pads darting about like fireflies over more percussive, tech-leaning drums. Last but not least is our standout - 'Sweet Love' (dub) with its delightful vocal and shuffling, cuddly deep house drums soon hypnotising you.

Review: Roberta is a producer inspired by the late great Motor City don that is Mike Huckaby. That is clear to hear in this new EP for the small but well-formed Sole Aspect label across a quartet of sublime deep house gems. Opener 'Excursions' is as smoky as they come with gorgeous but muted chords that bring warmth and diffuse light to the cuddly-deep drums and delicate percussive sprinkles. 'Forever Love' has a jazzy flute bursting out the mix next to more prominent drums while 'Love Mosaic' is a delightfully smooth and sultry late-night charmer with gorgeous soulful vocals and steamy sax lines. Review: Enduring Detroit maverick Omar-S celebrates 20 years since he released one of his most iconic 12"s by pressing it up as a new double pack with two new versions of two originals and one bonus unnamed track. The standouts of this EP were always 'U' and 'Set It Out'. The former is a raw as-you-like drum track with bounce in the kicks and pure machine soul in the vamping chords, and the latter shows Smith's other more tender side with smart 80s samples and new school r&b vibe on a dusty house beat. He has mashed them together perfectly on the new cut 'U Set It Out' and added extra weight to 'U 2023.' Add in the other two originals and heavy beatdown 'Track 3' and you have an essential new double pack.

Review: Deetron's been turning out serene house and techno for many a year but he changes tact here and presents Soulmate on Ilian Tape. It's an EP with a wide array of influences and kicks off with 'Path' which is bright, melodic, electric house music with cow bells galore. 'Zoom' is tightly coiled, loopy, dusty, turbocharged tackle with a warming intensity and then 'Screen' pairs more balmy and blissed-out chords with hurried beats and layers of FX and percussion. Last of all is the best of the lot - 'Blade'. It's a tribal, percussive cut that cannot fail to sweep you off your feet.

Review: Nothing is tastier than some Freerange deep house and so it proves with this first new offering of the year from the venerated UK label. Aroop Roy is the man on the buttons and 'Mama Mwana' is the Afro opener that transports you to somewhere hot. Squeaky guitar lines unfurl over the warming rolling beats to a hypnotic effect. Next is a remix from Moroccan scene mainstay FNX Omar who flips 'Re Bulele' into a deeply sonorous affair with twinkling melodies and steamy vocal coos and the original version rounds out the EP with percussive, funky and soulful house grooves. A typically rich EP from this crew.

Review: The French deep house label D3 Elements is now a decade old and to mark the occasion it has assembled a superb three part EP series featuring plenty of talents both new and old. The second EP kick off with some Japanese stylings from Koizumi Yukiko and his piano laced bongo workout '526'. Taelue sets off on a deep and heavy bassline pulse that will make floors march and Nemanja Krstic's 'Aquae Sulis' brings some jazzy chord work and bubbling funk bass for a nice heartfelt vibe. Gnork shuts down with a skittish, stripped back broken beat that makes this another diverse offering.

Review: Alan Dixon launches his brand new label Love Attack, the Multi Periodic Oscillations EP being a three tracker from Man Power at his curious techno best. Deep, dark and dubby, not to mention suitable for 3am needs everywhere, it opens with 'Cepheid Variable Part 1', 11 minutes of twists and turns, revolving around a hypnotic groove. That draw on everything he has done before to send you out to sea on gentle waves of shining synth goodness, downtempo bliss and dreamy, chubby, soft focus drums.
