Zulu Walk Parts 1 & 2 (reissue) (blue vinyl 7" limited to 200 copies)

Zulu Walk (part 1) (3:55)
Zulu Walk (part 2 - instrumental) (3:43)
Review: If you missed this one when it first dropped in 2011, now's your chance to catch up on a serious slice of rootsy funk with some heavyweight players involved. Afrika Bambaatta teamed up with The Mighty Mocambos and Charlie Funk to record "Zulu Walk", and what a result. The groove is incredible, deep in the pocket and rolling forward with a mellow urgency that works for "Part 1" and the instrumental "Part 2" on the flip. King Kamonzi rides the beat on the A side in fine style, capturing a wild energy that wouldn't be out of place in the P-Funk pantheon. True-skool funk heads, don't sleep.

Sanctify (T Groove Smooth mix) (4:14)
Review: Love Touch Records has a devilishly simple game plan: to release brand-new revivalist boogie, electrofunk and synth-powered soul songs on seven-inch singles. Here, the label's very first release from late 2019- which, incredibly, sold out simply through social media hype - finally gets a wider release. It's well worth checking, because it's a terrific slab of smooth, spacey, talk box-sporting slab of synth-soul from vocalist Amalia, label regulars The Precious Lo's and modern boogie wizard Brian Ellis, who provides a killer synth solo rich in wavy, LFO-trigger action. Over on the flip T-Groove provides a "Smooth Mix" - a more thickset take built around warm chords and one of the most squelchy synthesizer basslines we've ever hard.

Oldchap - "I Want To Show You" (5:16)
Alexny - "Not Bad" (5:36)
Review: The Moiss Music label seems to like to drop their EPs two at a time. They did it in February and they're doing it again in May. This eighth outing collects four more lively disco cuts, each with their own subtle influences. Berobreo's 'White Rabbit' for instance has funky undertones with loopy guitar riffs and nice breaks. The Magic Track's 'Jamming With Mom' meanwhile is more sensuous and deep, with late-night synth work and seductive vocals. Oldchap's 'I Want To Show You' has an expressive soul vocal with more low-slung grooves and Alexny's 'Not Bad' then gets quick, clipped and loopy for its lip-pouting disco thrills.

This Is Bolga! (part 2) (3:53)
Review: German-Ghanaian group the Polyversal Souls have previously collaborated with a number of bands and solo artists from West Africa, so this hook-up with Northern Ghanaian outfit the Bolga All Stars - a collective made up of leading local kologo and frafra-gospel singers and musicians - should not come as much of a surprise. Separated into two parts for the seven-inch release, the track blends the Polyversal Souls' lolloping, late '60s style Afro-funk grooves - complete with fuzzy, period style production - and sharp horn section with glistening guitars, snaking solos and fine vocals from the Bolga All Stars. It's one of the Polyversal Souls' finest releases yet, and that's saying something.

Review: A lovely new 45 from Detroit funk/hip-hop label Funk Night Records .Rickey Calloway started his music career at the tender age of 13, clowning around in rest periods doing James Brown imitations. It's with the spirit of Brown's backing band The JB's that the Daptone label's house band, The Dap Kings, turn Rickey's vocal track original into a groove led funk set of instrumentals. This version is heavy on the guitar licks with smatterings of bongo percussion, smouldering Hammond organ and punchy brass stabs without the confines of vocals. Highly recommended.

Claudette & Ti Pierre - "Zanmi Camarade" (Tropical Treats edit)
Ti Marcel - "Nan Point La Vie" (Siwo version)
Ibo Combo - "Mateau"
Les Lups Noirs - "Pile Ou Face"
Review: Killer new Sofrito 12" with hypnotic Carnival rhythms, DIY electro and vital Compas experiments from the Haitian archives! Lead in the way is a subtle edit of "Zanmi Camarade" from Claudette & Ti Pierre by Stockholm's Tropical Treats crew, this 1979 cover version of the folk song that is quite bewildering, with haunting vocals weaving a spell over a heavy polyrhythmic drum machine groove and arpeggiated synth backing. Just as impressive is the Siwo update of Ti Marcel's rugged, hypnotic Rara track "Nan Point La Vie" is dominated by the single-note 'Vaksin' bamboo flute, which Sofrito call "nature's sub-bass". Holding it down on the B Side is some untreated material, with an Ibo Combo cover of Coupe Cloue's evergreen "Mateau" complemented by a "Pile ou Face" from Les Loups Noirs which was a highlight of the Strut compilation Haiti Direct.

Review: This latest seven from Frank Raines Funk Night label is so hot there is steam rising off the wax! It sees funk troupe The Soul Surfers team up with vocalist Coko and we hope it's the first of several collaborations as there is a real studio chemistry on display here. There's a raw energy to Coko's vocal delivery that is reminiscent of Betty Davis and her vocals and the backing accompaniment sit perfectly on a killer groove arrangement from The Soul Surfers. The partnership shows a different side on the flip with "Wicked" a pensive Blues number that is fairly dominated by Coko's raspy singing.

The Continental Showstoppers cover version of Jackey Beaver's penned soul classic has been lovingly restored and the label claim it sounds better than the original! Review: It's strictly San Fran shizzle right here as Ubiquity go to town on one of the most respected faces on their sister imprint Luv N Haight. Clear vinyl and hand-stamped, both sides are smoother than a Barry White impressionist convention. Giles Peterson's Detroitian pal Tall Black Guy extends "Don't Want To Leave You" into a lavish, silky slo-mo nodder, capturing the mournful warmth of the original and reconceptualising for the cosmic youth. Meanwhile on the B we find Ubiquity boss Dandy Teru supping more of a trippy broken beat brew. Quintessential edits.

Charged with a thriving sense of turbo funk and broken beat mischief, each cut screams carnival and peak time perkiness. The tight horn harmonies and percussive textures of "Smokin Jo Crow"; the slower, seductive boogie-based jam "In The Loop"; the tight, jazzed out Bugz-style stomps of "Rokko Loko"; the acid wiggles and tropical riddim of "Lullaby"... Kunming Beats (1:48)
Review: The latest artist to join Dinked's roster of soul and funk obsessives is DJ D.S.K, a China-based Brit who grew up cutting and scratching hip-hop and old funk breaks. The three tracks showcased here seem to be built around samples from tasty old funk bombs, from cut-up and rearranged breaks, to punchy horn lines and low-slung basslines. Lead cut "Lamine" is particularly potent, featuring as it does DJ-friendly drum breaks, jangling soul guitars, rubbery bass and a floor-friendly rhythm track. Flip for the looser, electric piano-heavy dancefloor strut of "Police Woman", and the dusty, head-nodding, trumpet-laden hip-hop bounce of "Kumming Beats" (and, yes, it's a sneaky cut-up of an old James Brown tune).

Review: The first Island Disco 12", released earlier in the Spring, was something of a must-have for those who like their funk, soul and disco served with a healthy dollop of tropical flavour. Predictably, this second installment in the bootleg series is similarly essential. There's some Clavinet-heavy disco-soul swing in the shape of Duke's superb "Is It Groovy Now", a thrillingly percussive, Hammond-heavy boogaloo workout from Tremille & The Jamals, a frankly bizarre - but brilliant - fusion of Cajan violins and disco rhythms from Shadow, and a certified disco banger from Gerald PJ Browne (the hustlin' brilliance of "Sexy Lady"). In recent years, he's struck up a great partnership with the Truth & Soul label's house band, The Expressions. Their latest collaborative single, "Special Night", is something of a cinematic soul treat, with Fields wringing every bit of emotion out of his cracking, heartfelt vocal. The sumptuous A-side (subtitled 'Part 1') is joined on the flip by a sparser, stripped back version ('Part 2') that somehow manages to further emphasize the brilliance of Fields' lyrics and vocal. Both versions feel like future end-of-night classics.

Review: On this multi-artist bonanza, Aficionado owners Jason Boardman and Moonboots have decided to showcase contemporary talents from Manchester, in association with clothing brand Good Measure. Half Sink steps up first, gently unfurling the reverb-heavy guitar solos, booming bass and shuffling samba rhythms of "Tsukimi". King Clyde's loose, groovy and fuzzy "Request Line" is a bouncy disco-funk treat, while Dream Lovers' "For Belgian Friends" is an evocative chunk of meandering bliss. Arguably best of all, though, is "On A Whispered Way" by The Records We Never Made, a glistening, delay-heavy foray into cinematic, post-rock pastures. Clearly, Manchester's got (Balearic) talent.

Jo Ann Hamilton hailed from Georgia and was brought up on a diet of soul, Motown and r&b. At the tender age of seven she joined the Gospel Choir from the Melton Chappel church and then got into the disco scene. Five decades later she has linked with Kevin Fingier in Buenos Aires, Argentina for this fantastic new 7" that is imbued with classic funk, soul and swing. Opener 'September' is a massive Northern Soul gem that would have slayed back then and still does now. On the flip is the more obscure 'I love Without A Love' which is funky, tropical and infectious.

Freedom
Tokyo Blue
Review: After dropping an album of drop-dead classic jazz, rock and latin fusion with the self-titled The Fusion Experience, this single brings the remixes to the fore with some great versions of album tracks plus an edit too. Ray Harris' original of Scaramunga sounds like a long lost relic from an undiscovered vault of jazz and freakbeat classics, like a fusion between Charles Mingus, The Doors and Tito Puente. The basic piano pattern stays the same while the rest of the band vamp around it, with Harris laying down some sick organ sounds over the top combined with layers of percussion. Lack of Afro's remix however strips everything down to the essentials, making the guitar and bass carry the riffs while more robust beats are craftily laid on top. His mix of Freedom is even more drastic, as he incorporates a more 4/4 disco swing to the drums, adds a cool breakdown similar to Dennis Coffey's Scorpio and then takes the tune into a cover of SOUL's Burning Spear!
Unexpected, but thoroughly cool.

With a further tune from Harris's album included here, the breezy Rotary Connection-influenced Tokyo Blue, this whole release is a great fusion of influences coming together. See how many you can spot?

Review: Finnish revivalist funk combo the Soul Investigators are no strangers to collaboration, having previously provided backing for Nicole Willis, Myron and Ernie Hawks. Here, they once again join forces with the latter for two more chunks of instrumental funk and soul goodness. A-side "Scorpio Walk" is the kind of cut that should come with its own named dance; a shuffling, mid-tempo funk affair that layers Spaghetti Western guitar solos and fluttering flute lines over a backing track rich in flanged guitar licks, bustling bass guitar and on-point drum breaks. Flipside "Message of Love" is an altogether deeper and more dewy-eyed affair, with woozy backing vocals and electric piano solos rising above a shuffling groove.

If warming, glassy-eyed midtempo disco niceness is your thing, we'd heartily recommend this languid, sun-drenched edits offering from the Too Slow To Disco camp. It's packed to the rafters with toasty, afternoon-ready fare that's arguably best listened to while decked out in boat shoes, pastel-coloured shorts and a stripy t-shirt. HOLDTight steps up first with the head-nodding, saucer-eyed shuffle of future yacht disco classic 'Be My Love 2Nite', before Delfonic offers up a fine rearrangement of an obscure, breathy and seductive disco gem full of prominent Moog synth sounds, jaunty pianos and whispered vocals. 'Jorge's Pipa' by Jack Tennis is a fine, floor-friendly tweak of a disco-era Brazilian gem, while Those Guys From Athens' '4 Your Love' is a seductive disco slow jam straight from the top shelf.

While the Rephlex crew and Joey Negro are the most famous exponents of the art, Galaxy Sound Co regular Kadena has previously proved to be rather adept at it, too. It's for this reason that "A Blast Of Funk!", their debut single, has caused such a commotion. It boasts fresh recordings of two of the most popular cover versions in their armoury. Review: Upront to juno ! In 2009, a group of seasoned funk and soul session musicians joined forces to record a rousing rhythm & blues-meets-funk cover version of Duffy's 2007 single "Mercy". Subsequently released on both Tri Sound and Acid Jazz, the track has become a must-have for soul DJs ever since.Sounding as though it might have been recorded in the late 60's it has a powerful funk driving backbeat ,thumping bass, soaring male soul vocal and screaming swirling hammond organ. Only 300 pressed. Don't sleep !

Here Again
Review: Tear shaped vinyl! If that doesn't get your attention, the audio most certainly will. Taken from last year's collaborative album between Alice and Quantic, "I'd Cry" is a serenade of weeping strings and sentimental pianos coated with Alice's honey-dewed dulcets. "Here Again" is delivered on a sumptuous bed of drama. All staccato flutes, big horn back drops and more emphatic Russell goodness. Whether you have the album Look Around The Corner or not, this super-limited, lovely looking vinyl genuinely is essential.

I'll Keep A Light In My Window (Direct To Disc version)
Review: Super limited Record Store Day release from two established Tru Thoughts acts, with two exclusively live recordings of "Look Around The Corner" and a version of the gospel classic made famous by NYCC, "I'll Keep A Light In My Window". Both were recorded in one take live direct to disc (a system which bypasses the use of magnetic tape) and features Will Quantic's band Combo Barbaro, including musicians from Peru and Columbia flown over to UK especially for the recording. Both releases are simply outstanding, with Alice Russell's vocals soaring in places and gentle in others. Collectable and, quite simply, essential.

Quinteto Ternura - "Baby" (2:56)
Trio Ternura - "Filhos De Zambi" (3:02)
Review: The remastered 7" reissue from Brazil 45s/Mr Bongo features two highly coveted tracks from Quinteto Ternura and their predecessor, Trio Ternura. This pressing revives two rare gems from the past with a fresh, high-quality cut. On Side-1, Quinteto Ternura delivers 'Baby,' a dazzling Brazilian modern soul track penned by Caetano Veloso and arranged by Arthur Verocai. Originally from their 1974 self-titled LP, this song is a smooth blend of tropical bliss and has long been a cherished rarity. Flipping to the Side-2, Trio Ternura's 'Filhos De Zambi' offers an upbeat samba-funk delight. Released in the same year, this track is filled with vibrant energy from the original trio, featuring a catchy chorus and a dynamic key change. Co-written by the siblings' father Umberto Silva and Jose Ribamar, it remains a dancefloor favorite. This reissue provides a valuable opportunity to own these classic tracks in their prime.

Super Strong (Basement Freaks remix)
Review: Formerly on Sunday Best and now on Jalapeno, Max Sedgley drops a third single from his acclaimed Suddenly Everything long player. With Tasita D'Mour taking hold of the lead vocal slot with both hands, "Superstrong" is a mean, boogie-inspired monster with classic strings and a belting chorus all present and correct. Faze Action really lift it to new heights though, dropping a post-Italo mix that will delight Aeroplane fans with its stripped down drums and bass and dramatic live drum-fills. Jalapeno label mates Basement Freaks also do a great job by dropping a funky breaks mix that reinvents the tune into a fun yet hard-working stomper.

Shit & Shine - "Blowhannon"

Shit & Shine - "Shower Curtain"
Theo Parrish - "Synthetic Flemm" (Shit & Shine version)
Review: Fronted by Texan musician Craig Clouse, Shit and Shine's skewed combination of primitive techno, industrial, noise and classic garage rock has gained them a significant live reputation, bolstered by their intimidating array of releases, predominantly arriving on the UK-based Riot Season label. Their thick-set musical style makes them an ideal candidate for a release on the Diagonal imprint run by Powell, and like his music, this eponymous EP takes a similarly skewed take on the dancefloor; "Blowhannon" is like vintage Cherrystones with added disco muscle, "Value" throws raw rhythms into a gravel filled washing machine and "Shower Curtain" combines a deeply sleazy sense of funk together with ethereal delay; most visceral is "Dixie Peach", a swollen morass of steroid pumped bass which is in fact an edit of Theo Parrish's "Synthetic Flemm". Big tip on this one, no matter what your musical preferences are...

Everybody Knows I Love You
Review: Records released by the Cincinnati soul legend Kenny Smith are prized pieces for funk and soul lovers all over the globe. "Skunkie," originally out on the super-scarce Kogan label, has proved to be the most difficult Smith tune to track down. With less than 5 known copies still in existence, prices are correspondingly tremendous. "Skunkie" is a gritty, up-tempo instrumental charger with crisp breakdowns in all the right places. The flip side holds the sunny soul vocal "Everybody Knows I Love You," a perfect straight ahead counterpart to the tough a-side.

Review: The story goes that T Funk Collective were formed during lockdown after the wealth of time offered by the anti-pandemic measure allowed Manchester DJ T2Funk to hone and streamline his crate-digging chops - leading naturally to the formation of a collective of producers and turntablists, who now contribute their own modern funk bits to their very own label. 'Since I Fell For You' is a quality, hi-fi instrumental funk number suited for DJs and dancers alike. You'll be hard-pressed to find anything less inhibition-melting for some time.

Funky Drummers In A Space Suit (Slap & Blap edit)
Review: If anyone can add a truly new twist to the endless array of JB edits, it's Tall Black Guy. "Pay Me Back My Money" stretches funk's most famous band leader out to include bags of space and even a touch of jazz as subtle keys are thrown deep into the background. "Funky Drummers In A Space Suit" ups the originality stakes even further with a dreamy harp-strummed arpeggio and trippy snippets that, if you didn't know the title, you'd be hard pushed to identify them. Proof that sampling culture still has heaps to give, Tall Black Guy can do no wrong right about now.

Broken Flute (3:49)
Review: Happy birthday to party-starting, funk-fuelled record label Resense, which put out its first 7" single 10 years ago. To kick off a new decade, they've enlisted the services of regular contributor Andy Taylor. He begins with the percussion-rich bounce of "Kitschy Jungle", where original Afro-funk vocals and instrumentation ride a jaunty tropical rhythm track. It's tastefully done, with Taylor's tasty new beats working well with the dusty, sampled elements. Over on the flipside, he opts for a more straightforward Afro-funk feel, lacing punchy horns and reverb-laden flute lines atop a killer funk break and heavily compressed bassline. File under: "dancefloor fire".

Review: Repress of the debut Sofrito Super Singles which celebrates the Afro-disco and boogie scene of South Africa, - where Salsoul meets Soweto. Comes housed in a new look Sofrito house sleeve. The three track EP features Teaspoon & The Waves - led by veteran alto player Teaspoon Ndelu. They released one album in 1980, covering a mix of disco and funk sounds for the SA dancefloors. Oh yeh Soweto is a cheeky version of Lamont Dozier's Going Back To My Roots - changing the lyrics and toughening up the beats, but with the same killer riffs. Saturday Night Special is from the same LP, a spaced out Afro Disco groove with excellent percussion and psychedelic synths, re-edited by the Sofrito team. The B side features a track by the Nzimande Allstars - another mysterious group of session musicians. The drawn out groove of Highway Sporo Disco fuses a heavy disco backing with jive guitar and stellar horns and organ for a unique taste of the underground sound of the Cape.

Review: Fresh from the instrumentals wing of contemporary r&b and funk label Colemine comes the new one from Tee See Connection, 'Skyline Chili Churner'. This 7" single procures two formerly-thought-lost recordings made at the basement of the Regent Drives studio in Middletown, Ohio by the band, who consist of Rob Houk on drums, Matt Amburgy on keys and Terry Cole on bass. Seemingly crafted for the express purpose of hip-hop sampling in mind, both tracks are out-and-out funkers, with the B-side's 'Queen City' going for a straight-up, kick-backed 80ish BPM, and the A's titular number laying down an interesting organic funk groove that perhaps only the more seasoned of samplers would have the guts to sift.
