Review: Funk editor Mister Mushi finalises the latest fleet-dispatch by the eponymous factory known as Mushi 45. All housed on a distinctive yellow, large-innered 7" record (you know, the you need the metal spindle adapter for), every release on this label is a charm. Here the dotted line marks out a well-defined classic by Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock from 1998, 'It Takes Two', which in turn samples Lynn Collins' 'Think', after which this reissue is named and from which the now rather saturated vocal sample originates. James Brown's original production and backing "c'mon!" admonitions shine brightly, while Mushi's extra phattenings also serve to emphasise the mix without peaking it.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Perro Bueno Edits is back with more muy bueno refixes of some classic disco sounds. This third such volume features two reimagined Afro-funk tracks by the mysterious label head Perro Bueno. The first track 'BOWO' brings a nice driving groove with open hi-hats add some smoothness and funky guitar riffs and punchy horns adding some extra dancefloor bite without sacrificing the vintage roots. The second track 'MSMO' is a heavier beat with vamping chords and guitar riffs really sending it home with clever sampling and modern enhancements. Both nostalgic yet fresh this is another tasteful disco, Afro and funk fusion for discerning dancers.

Review: Former Paper Recordings artist Sophie Lloyd apparently started working on "Calling Out" whilst gripped by the January blues. Her intention was simply to make "happy music". To that end, she turned to her gospel roots. The results, shared here on 7" single for the first time, are little less than spectacular. With collaborator Dames Brown in tow, Lloyd's vocals - accompanied by a gospel choir, of course - simply soar above a jaunty, piano-heavy track rich in live instrumentation. It sits somewhere between traditional gospel, house and disco, with a flipside instrumental brilliantly showcasing the quality of the instrumentation throughout. The piano solos, in particular, are breathlessly good.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: New York producer P-Sol has hit on a super effective formula for starting the party, stitching together a selection of familiar samples and hooks, adding some beautifully dusty breaks and adding a final sheen of shiny production skills. Both sides of this 7" have a touch of raw 'two turntables' action about them, while remaining impeccably constructed and tight, with the A-side 'This Way' proving to be the slightly speedier and slightly more funk/r&b-flavoured, while 'Breathe & Stop (Abstract Blend)' is the one for the pure hip-hop heads. Both, however, are dynamite in the box, needless to say.

Review: Oooh! Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You" definitely belongs in the canon of all time modern soul classics. Taken from her 2001 second album Mahogany Soul, the Swizz Beats produced track made optimum usage of an O' Jays sample and was instrumental in that LP going gold and propelling the former D'Angelo collaborator to stardom. It also inspired countless official and under the counter remixes with Blaze's perhaps the most recognisable. So yes this reissue on 7" from Outta Sight is worthy if you don't have the original in your collection and features a housed up remix from Hex Hector on the flip.

Review: 'Thermae' feels like a track that's more about the spaces between the notes than the notes themselves. Review: Casquiat and Controller 7 have united on DATUM Recordings for this high class new 45rpm which works as a fine weapon for your record bag or equally well as some superb home listening. Casquiat goes first with 'Set It Off' which has raw drum breaks and direct bars delivered over some wild guitar riffs, slamming hits and old school vocal chops. Controller 7's 'Dope On Plastic' is a percolating funk joint with old school hip-hop energy and some evocative bars that recall the likes of Beastie Boys. Add in smart horns, JB yelps and scratching and you have a real party starter.

Review: Much loved Michigan techno and ambient virtuoso John Beltran wraps up the so far so excellent Back to Bahia 7 series with the a final volume that proves to be the most dancefloor focussed offering yet. Leading with 'O Patio,' Beltran shows his class with a blend of jazz-funk and MPB that comes with a rather sunny Ibiza-inspired twist while echoing the vibes of Latin greats like Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetti. On the flip side, 'Belle Isle' is a perfect party anthem for those outdoor sessions - think beach gatherings or cookouts and you won't go wrong. This has been a brilliant series and while it's a shame it's over, this is a fitting way to end it.

Review: What true head doesn't know 'Flowers'? Produced infamously by Sunship (Ceri Evans), this keystone lintel of the 90s UK garage door frames Leanne Brown's vocal - originally recorded as part of a much slower r&b demo - against a rolling, skippy beat that's all bounce and shimmer. Lyrically, it's a lovesick anthem, filled with longing and the ache of distance, but the groove keeps it light on its feet, providing a crossover appeal with a perma-adhesive sticking power. Though Sweet Female Attitude didn't follow it with another major hit, 'Flowers' has never faded. Tend to your garden, and your blooms won't wilt.

Review: The pinnacle of original-visional femme rap, Bahamadia quickly dominated the Philly hip-hop scene at the age of 30 with the release of her independently-made LP Kollage in 1996. But she'd been active on the scene at least two years prior; 'Total Wreck' was her first ever single, and preempted the record alongside 'Uknowhowwedu', 'I Confess' and 'Biggest Part Of Me' in a two-year drumroll that would eventually set the Penn state capital slowly afire. Review: For those of a certain age, Gwen McRae's "All This Love That I'm Givin" will always evoke memories of Cassius' French Touch classic "Feeling For You", which sampled it heavily. It remains a killer record in its' own right, though, as this timely reissue proves. Originally released in 1979, it sees McRae at her powerful best, delivering a potent message to an errant lover over a killer, low-slung disco-funk groove. It's one of the tracks that should really be in any discerning funk, soul or disco DJ's collection. Flip for original B-side "Maybe I'll Find Somebody New", a breezier chunk of laidback soul with a slightly Southern lilt. It's good, but pales into insignificance compared to the brilliant 'A' side.

Review: Under-the-radar hip-hop issuers Modern Classics snaffle up Kendrick Lamar's bodying 2024 diss track to Drake, 'Not Like Us', pressing it to bootleg record only six months after its release. In one of the most compelling yet travestied hip-hop beefs of the 2020s - where it seems only the most high-profile heirs apparent to the crown of "greatest of all time" may indulge beefs at all, and in which the format's verbal blows have grown increasingly low -'Not Like Us' premiered only less than 20 hours after Lamar dropped 'Meet The Grahams', which had already taken aim at Drake's family history. With stringy hyphy flavours, portentous lyrical KOs, and an opening Sixth Sense reference (ahem, "I see dead people"), Lamar temporarily goes from crown-bearer to pallbearer here; it is said that Drake may never come back from this one, amid the many serious allegations levelled at him in the song.

Review: Calling all locked-groove stickerers, needle twisters, and/or tonearm weight worriers, prepare your ears and needles for a wonderful trove of breakbeat bullion, ripe for the looping and the zealous hunching over. This modern rare groove emulation by Florence, 'Funky Song', lays down a phantasmically funky original breakbeat, fleshed out and swollen unto the most maximal of proportions. The A-side reimagines Frankie Valli's classic with a laid-back reggae twist while the B-side takes on Crystal Waters' '90s dance anthem with surprising charm. Infused with a subtle Shibuya-kei flair, both covers feel fresh yet timeless. The Waters rendition, in particular, sounds like a forgotten folk tune-so natural it's hard to believe it wasn't always this way. A breezy, nostalgic delight from a band overdue for global recognition.

Review: The Boom Bap Classics 7"s series was launched in 2022 and sticks to a sturdy format, always billing two double-A-listers of rap stardom from the 90s on reissued vinyl. The choices are always lesser-trodden, and buck expectational trends; even longtime hip-hop heads are unlikely to have heard of Akinyele and Sadat X, solo progeny of the Rochelle rap collective, Brand Nubian. On 'Loud Hangover', rough gangsta rap hewings prove assimilable with boom bap's tendency to show its sensitive side, with an icy yet mournful string hung and suspended a "y'knowwhati'msayin'?" laden farrago. 'Stages And Lights' leans further into emotive dynamism, with Derrick Murphy waxing real on public housing shortages, church pieties and Black culture.

Another one signalling the best of this rather recherche band's evolving sonics, they here team up with with Habiba Chaouf, a talented Arab singer deeply rooted in Spain's flamenco scene. Habiba's mesmerising vocals bring a rich layer to the A-side, where identifiably Arab melodies intertwine seamlessly with deep Afro-funk rhythms. 'Amal' means "hope" in Arabic, suggesting themes of longing, uncertainty, and soul-search. The B-side's 'La Esperanza', meanwhile, adds a touch of 70s film soundtrack bombast, combined with a whispered mid-record rap.

Review: On March 31, 1964, The Beatles recorded seven songs for the BBC's Saturday Club. Three of them were covers of American rock 'n' roll and country songs. The final segment aired on the BBC's General Overseas Service and earlier that day, the band filmed a live performance at the Scala Theatre in Kings Cross for their upcoming film, A Hard Day's Night. This EP includes 'The Hippy Hippy Shake', recorded for Saturday Club and originally broadcast on February 15, as well as the catchy 'Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby' and 'Long Tall Sally'. The band's tight musicianship can be heard throughout this record, which serves as a great example of The Beatles' dynamic early sound during their rise to global fame.
