Review: Some magical – and ridiculously limited – Prince remix action here, as Athens of the North house band East Coast Love Affair give their take on the Purple One’s 1984 song ’17 Days’ (which, fact fans, originally appeared on the B-side of ‘When Doves Cry’). They’ve done a great job, too, taking Prince’s original vocals and piano and wrapping them around a rolling groove that sits somewhere between disco and the more organic side of deep house. It’s basically a club-ready take that (rightly) treats the late, great musician’s original with due care and reverence. Review: While much of the material they release is brand spanking new, Phonogramme is not averse to reissuing choice gems from the 1990s. That's the case here, as the French deep house label offers a new edited - pressed to striking pink marbled wax - of Analog Trks Vol 1, a 1997 EP from former Prescription Records artist Abacus (real name Austin Bascom). This edition varies from the original, featuring two of the four cuts and a previously unreleased take of another. Check first 'We Cookin' Now', a deliciously deep, slow-building masterpiece of smoky late night sonics, stripped-back percussion, Chez Damier motifs and subterranean bass, before admiring the tech-tinged deep house bounce of 'Opinion Rated R'. Rounding things off is 'Black Thanxx (Instrumental)', a kind of deep house/deep acid fusion workout rich in spacey chords, analogue bass and prototype tech-house bleeps.

Review: Italian label Panick Panick! might be best known for carrying releases from the likes of Noha and Elon, but now they're welcoming the mighty Carl Finlow to the fold. There's always an electroid streak to the legendary producer's sound, but he's equally tipped towards the steady thump of 4/4 on this particular outing. That doesn't dilute the imaginative brushstrokes of his immaculate production one jot, best demonstrated on the sparkling 'Count On It' with its rich layers of modulating synth work. Noha offers reinterpretations of both original tracks on the B side, edging in a little more Euro techno functionality without dampening the flamboyant spirit of Finlow's production style.

Review: As part of Atlantic's commemoration of 75 years as a label, the early recordings of Genesis are getting a fresh airing in audiophile-quality repressing. This is the band in its purest form, with Peter Gabriel up front, Phil Collins on the drums and Steve Hackett on guitar, when they were a quintessential prog outfit with a peculiarly English sensibility that's all of its own. Nursery Cryme was originally released in 1971 and it features sprawling epics like 'The Return Of The Giant Hogweed', which is as heavy and grooving as it is meandering, and the extravagant opener 'The Musical Box', excerpts of which remained in the band's live set well into the 80s.

Review: MJ getting the krewcial remix treatment. Astonishingly, apparently mixed from the original multi-tracks, with love and respect for the original, side A sets off with an alternate version of 'Get On The Floor', completely built on the various Afrobeat inspired elements within the original multitracks. The result is a hard hitting and intense seven-plus minute dancefloor workout. 'Baby' takes us from Off The Wall to Thriller, with classic 80s MJ on one of his more underrated midtempo tunes, updated for today's dancefloor. Review: At the start of 2024, BADBADNOTGOOD channeled their renewed creative energy into the Mid Spiral series. 'Feet Amongst The Clouds' introduces a smoother, more atmospheric feel, driven by a strong reggae vocal sample and heavy dub influence. Review: Since starting out as a studio engineer in his native Essex back in the late 1990s, Michael Gray has been one of British house music's most prolific producers. In recent years he's spent much of his time reworking and tooling up old disco and boogie hits. He's on that tip again here, putting his spin on Raw Silk's 1982 boogie classic 'Do It To The Music'. Gray delivers three versions, each of which combine familiar elements of the original - the duo's vocals, the squelchy bassline, the swirly effects and colourful synth sounds - with rolling house beats and subtle new musical flourishes. The 'Extended Mix' and radio edit style 'Reprise' both make the most of the catchy vocals, while the 'Extended Dub Mix' includes a fantastically dubbed-out, stretched-out breakdown for added dancefloor excitement.

Review: Phonogramme is in the middle of a fine series of releases that highlight the great work of legendary US deep house don Abacus. Analog Stories Vol 3 opens with the lush depths of 'It's Bubbling (Short Stories)' then gets more busy with 'Beautiful African Girl' which features humid pads and jazzy keys with dense percussive layers. 'After The Disco' (Submariner edit) sinks back into smooth grooves with light sprinklings of percussion and nimble drums and last of all 'Take A Trip' (feat Keitajuma) closes out with ambient laced and late night sounds.

Review: You can always rely on Dungeon Meat to kick out the jams and that is the case here with Julian Anthony next up to make a solid house statement. 'Dale Ale' kicks things off with a tumbling hook that sounds like someone whacking a giant metal drum, while 'Phantom Strike' brings shuffling garage energy to the beats. 'Radikal Forze' is one of those late-night jams with some mysterious pads leading you to mischief and last of all 'Z-Town' rides on rubbery kick drum loops with tripped-out pads. Review: The magnificent Mukatsuku returns with another superb little package here on limited 12". It features the Afro disco sounds of Fred Fisher Atalobhor And His Ogiza Dance Band firstly on 'WTFS' which was originally released back in 1981. It's a booty-wiggling cut with myriad funky lines, squelchy synth motifs, lush chords and soul drenched vocals that bring the sunshine and party in equally playful measure. On the flip is 'Ebi Lolo' which is defined by its big brass section and loosey-goose guitar lines, bright chords and subtle funk. Two great gems once more from this on point label.

Review: No prizes for guessing the motivation behind this new EP, 5 Years Of B2 Recordings. It is a tidy and tasteful celebration of half a decade of top quality deep house from a range of key players. This one opens with Frenchman Brawther getting dubbed out and deep as ever with some nice lounge chords and blissed-out pads. Bengoa's 'Neftina Dub' has a subtle US garage shuffle to it that harks back to the 90s and Lex & Locke then bring rich paint chords and withering synth motifs to 'Atenas Blues' before Zaq's 'Make A Wish' shuts down with some cosmic rays of positivity. A fantastic EP so here's to the next five years.

Review: Willie Mitchell's 'Groovin'' has largely gone down in time as a hip-hop sample source par excellence, but that doesn't detract from its inherent original swagger. Now re-released via Octave Lab, we're once again reminded of the American bandleader's easy wrist-flicking grooves and organ pumps, with the star tune here representing a simple framing of funk and soul at its most essential, without fluff or pomp. Also on the B comes a version from Cut Creator$, whose reputation for mixing hip-hop sampling sources precedes them.

Review: Tunes Delivery is a sub-label of Scruscru's Scruniversa and now it enters into the world with a fantastic first offering in the form of this six-track various artists EP. 'Hotmood' opens up with the feel-good disco-funk of 'Just Tonight,' Scruscru keeps it real with 'Funky Flute' which is a nice languid instrumental and Frank Virgilio up the ante with some big horn-laced grooves. The flip side then comes on strong with three more brilliantly musical grooves that brim with catchy riffs and fresh disco-infused rhythms. A great start to what is sure to be a great label.

Review: Dungeon Meat's tasty new sub-label SLABS thrilled with its first outing from Dutchman Borren not long ago and is now back with a second slab of goodness. This one is from London's rising star Azaad and it comes on nice weighty 140g wax. Label heads Brawther and Tristan have already been slamming these joints at clubs and festivals around the world for the last 18 months so they come with a real stamp of approval. 'The Beat' bumps along with nice swinging kicks and steamy vocal inflections and 'The Return' is a gorge-tinged and hardcore house cut with depth and drive in equal measure.
