  5. Dynomite (4:57)
  6. Spiked Punch (dub) (5:48)
Review: Dark Entries is humbled to continue digging through the archives of legendary producer Patrick Cowley. While best known for his production on chart-topping cybernetic disco anthems such as Sylvester's 'You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)' or his own 'Menergy', Cowley, who passed away from AIDS-related illness in 1982, left us with a substantial body of work. Since 2009, Dark Entries has been working with Cowley's friends and family to shed light on the lesser known facets of this singular artist's output. This has resulted in a string of celebrated archival albums, including Catholic (featuring Jorge Socarras), School Daze, Muscle Up, Afternooners, and the recent Mechanical Fantasy Box. Some Funkettes, the latest addition to this series, is a collection of previously unreleased cover songs recorded from 1975-1977. These raw, unembellished tributes both showcase Cowley's early musical interests and chart the development of his production techniques.

Cat: DYNAM 7085/86. Rel: 12 Oct 20

  2. Blind Man Can See It (2:37)
  3. Make It Good To Yourself (3:15)
  4. White Lightning (I Mean Moonshine) (2:38)
Review: Dynamite Cuts latest double seven-inch presentation takes us back to 1973, and James Brown's often-overlooked soundtrack to Blaxploitation crime movie "Black Ceasar", a set previously described by one critic as "a full-frontal funk attack". What we get is four of the soundtrack's strongest cuts: electric piano solo-laden funk shuffler "Blind Man Can See", one of Brown's most celebrated and best-loved songs, "The Boss" (sample lyric: "look at me, what do you see? A bad mother!"), the softly sweet, strings-and-solo laden breeziness of "White Lightning", and the crunchy heavy funk strut of "Make It Good To Yourself". As the old saying goes: all killer, no filler.

Curumin Chama Cunhata Que Eu Vou Contar (Todo Dia Era Dia De Indio)
  1. Curumin Chama Cunhata Que Eu Vou Contar (Todo Dia Era Dia De Indio) (3:23)
  2. Rio Babilonia (4:30)
Review: Astonishingly, this is the 80th instalment in Mr Bongo's brilliant Brazil 45s series. Predictably, this edition is every bit as essential as its predecessors. It boasts two superb 1980s recordings by one of the true legends of Brazilian 20th century music, Jorge Ben. On the A-side you'll find the lengthily titled 'Curmin Chama Cunhata Que Eu Vou Contar (Todo Dia Erza Dia De Indio), a synth-splashed samba-funk tribute to the indigenous tribes of Brazil that was first featured on Ben's 1981 album Bem-Vinda Amizade. Turn to the flip for 'Rio Babilonia', a killer Brazilian boogie joint rich in squelchy synth bass, heady Latin percussion and fiery horn arrangements courtesy of the late, great Lincoln Olivetti.

Live At JAM PDM
Cat: 451055. Rel: 22 Oct 20
  1. Arabesque Breakin' Suite (3:08)
  2. Theme From Beverly Hills Cop (Axel F) (3:39)
Review: Earlier in the year, Bjorn Wagner's long-serving fuzzy funk outfit the Mighty Mocambos offered up a must check single featuring recordings captured during an in-store performance at a German record shop. Their latest "45" follows a similar script, showcasing straight-to-tape recordings made during their performance at the JAM PDM break-dance battle in February 2020. They do their best impression of a Middle Eastern Incredible Bongo Band covers combo on A-side 'Arabesque Breakin Suite', adding suitably exotic horn lines to a killer groove beefed up by some serious bongo action. Over on the flip they breathe new life into an '80s electro break-dance fave, re-inventing Harold Faltermeyer's theme from Bevery Hills Cop ('Axel F') as a weighty, tropical funk smasher.

  1. I Believe In Miracles (3:30)
  2. No Nos Pararan (3:45)
  3. Ain't No Stopping Us Now (3:03)
Review: Second time around for Banda Achilifunk and Original Jazz Orquestra's sought-after 2011 cover of disco classic "I Believe in Miracles", original copies of which now change hands for serious sums online. The expansive Spanish crew's baggy, sun-kissed and rumba-soaked Latin disco cover of the Jackson Sisters' classic is perfectly pitched, adding layers of crunchy Clavinets and punchy horns to a sumptuously summery groove. Over on the flip we get two different takes on McFadden & Whitehead classic "Ain't No Stopping Us Now": a decidedly Balearic Spanish language cover ("No Nos Pararas"), and an instrumental cover full to bursting with superb grooves and even more scintillating horn solos.

  1. Move On Up (3:53)
  2. Give Me Your Love (3:32)
Review: If you've not already picked up a copy of Mutaksuku Records' superb reissue of two of reggae musician Devon Russell's greatest Curtis Mayfield covers, we'd suggest grabbing one of these Juno exclusive white vinyl versions, which also happens to ship with a tasty wooden "45" adaptor. You may already know Russell's incredible '84 version of 'Move on Up', which re-imagines it as a languid, post-disco reggae-soul anthem that just oozes sun-soaked positivity. On this seven-inch, it comes backed by something equally as essential: the artist's lesser-known 1993 take on 'Give Me Your Love', which turns the much-loved song into a colourful, synth-laden trip through Balearic reggae territory. In a word: essential.

Impeach The President (limited blue vinyl 7")
Cat: CLMN 175C1. Rel: 23 Oct 20
  1. Impeach The President (feat Kelly Finnigan) (2:52)
  2. Campus Life (3:39)
Review: They say history repeats itself, and in the case of this single it certainly does. First released in 1973, it's a protest single by The Honey Drippers who were advocating for the impeachment of the then President Richard Nixon for the goings on of the Watergate scandal. It has now been put out again in the midst of the 2020 election campaign when many believe the missteps of Trump mean he himself deserves to be taken from office. Musically, it's a warm bit of classic soul with deep cut rhythms feat Kelly Finnigan. 'Campus Life' is a more happy go lucky wedge of funk.

  2. We Like It (Caserta Lime Ricky dub) (5:08)
Review: Boston's A-grade record digger, funk and soul boffin and master edit maker Kon is back with his Gang for this tidy 7" that also features Rick James. It is once again an edit aided by Kon's long time engineer Caserta, with slick, life affirming jazz tinged and super funky production. Soul Supreme is on keys, the knotted bass comes from Xander Vrienten and together they all serve up a real late summer jam that could be 50 years old. The dub is just as delicious on the flip, with more room for the lux and authentic production and very real musicianship to shine through

Cat: FUR 7377COLOURRE. Rel: 15 Oct 20
  1. Summer Madness (part 1) (2:58)
  2. Summer Madness (part 2) (2:37)
Review: Second time around for the Soul Surfers' superb cover of jazz-funk classic 'Summer Madness', which first hit stores in September 2019. This time round, it comes pressed on gold-coloured vinyl, though you'll have to act fast to secure a copy. It's worth doing just that though, because it sees the Californian act re-imagining one of the smoothest and most seductive cuts in the Kool & The Gang canon as a languid chunk of laidback instrumental soul complete with crunchy drums, elongated lead guitar solos and some suitably spacey analogue synth sounds. The luscious and lazy A-side version is backed by a 'Part Two' take that's a little more stripped-back, raw and heavy.

Ma Ma Ma Ma Mae (A Lingua Dos Anjos)
  1. Jorge Ben - "Ma Ma Ma Ma Mae (A Lingua Dos Anjos)" (4:09)
  2. Cauby Peixoto & Jorge Ben - "Dona Culpa" (3:25)
Review: Mr Bongo's excellent Brazil.45 series digs deeper into the legacy of Jorge Ben, one of Brazil's most famous musical exports and an enduring samba king. Opening up is 'Ma Ma Ma Ma Mae (A Lingua Dos Anjos)' which was originally on his 1980 album Alo Alo, Como Vai? It's a modern sound, with disco inflections and big wind sections, but also some trademark Ben playfulness in the lyrics which speak of flying saucers and angels. O the flip, things slow down and get more steamy and sensuous on 'Dona Culpa' from his Cauby! Cauby!' album of the same year. Two sides, two styles, one irrepressible artist.

Soul Is My Salvation Chapter 7
  1. Spiritual Souls - "We Came To Show You The Way" (5:11)
  2. Heaven's Sound - "Fire" (3:16)
Review: Tone B Nimble's eight part 7" series is shining a light on some essential gospel, disco, boogie and soul sounds which, when all put together, reveal a beautiful design courtesy of designer Charlotte McCrae. That makes this an extra special collector's piece even before you add the music into the bargain. Chapter 7 is a busting one with Spiritual Souls 1982 jam 'We Came To Show You The Way' layering up hardcore funk rhythms with some early rap vocals that bring the attitude. Reverse it for Heaven's Sound's 1984 gold, 'Fire,' which is an expansive and expressive vocal masterpiece.

Needlework Vol 1
  1. Dr Octagon - "Bear Witness" (3:29)

Review: Handsome Boy Modeling School is an American duo made up of hip-hop beatmakers Dan the Automator of Gorillaz association and rince Paul from projects with Stetsasonic, De La Soul and Gravediggaz. Dan the Automator assumes his DJ Octagon Palais for the opera here - a hard hitting and deep cut rap with plenty of manic DJ scratching and big stabs. Handsome Boy Modelling School then link up for the flip side 'Holy Calamity' which is another floor filler with bold brass and mad scratching. Both tunes hark back to a golden era of rap and will get any floor pumping.

  21. Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City (bonus track) (4:14)
Review: First released in 2019, the self-titled debut album from multi-instrumentalist Adrian Quesada's Black Pumas band is a glorious homage to the glory days of psychedelic soul in the late 1960s and early '70s. Quesada's authentically old-sounding production and the band's instrumentation draws heavily on the likes of Tower of Power, Sly and the Family Stone, Rotary Connection, Terry Callier and the Chambers Brothers, with mic man Eric Burton providing effortlessly emotive and impassioned vocal performances. This 'deluxe edition' expands the album over a double album and bonus 7", via a series of similarly killer cuts such as 'Fast Car', 'Politicians in My Eyes' and a revelatory psych-rock cover of Beatles classic 'Elanor Rigby'.

  3. Stay With Me (original Soundtrack '81 version) (2:51)
  4. Now That I Have You (original '86 Hip Kik instrumental version) (4:52)
Review: 'Now That I Have You' is simply one of the sweetest and most effortlessly lovely songs in the Tommy McGee canon. The artist himself certainly thought so, because he recorded it a number of times during the 1980s. This essential reissue boasts all of the best versions, starting with the brilliantly produced and performed 1981 original version, which we firmly believe to be one of the greatest cosmic soul tracks of all time. Arguably even better though is the 'Hip-Kik' version from 1986, a jauntier and more rubbery-sounding affair that replaces much of the instrumentation with drum machines and synthesizer sounds. The EP also boasts an instrumental version of this killer re-make nestled on the flip, along with a more laidback 1981 recording, 'Stay With Me'.

Review: No one works a mixing board quite like Joe Clasusell, and his latest project is another high water mark in a career full of them: his Claussell Edits & Overdubs version of Crowns of Glory's 'Lord Look at Your People' is getting put out on a series of 12"s, with this third one being another winner. Bishop Jeff Banks & The Revival Temple Mass Choir offer up two versions of 'Jerusalem' on the a-side, and the reverse is 'God Helps Those Who Help Themselves' by The Gospelaires Of Dayton, O. Both are intense, emotive, life affirming affairs to bring joy to any dance floor.

Review: Denie Corbett, Marva Hicks, Susan Beaubian, Sylvia Striplin and Vivian Prince are Eighites Ladies, a vocal ensemble best known for their hit 'Turned On To You'. An iconic rare groove gem from the 80s, it has since been sampled any number of times by giants like A Tribe Called Quest. An edited version has been put out before on an Expansion 7" but an extended version has alway been sought after. Well, here it is along with 'Give Me Your Love', a solo tune from Sylvia. Review: German label Analog Africa has long been documenting the more niche musical sounds, scenes and styles of the world. La Locura De Machuca: Barranquilla - Colombia 1975-1980 is in fact their 30th such compilation and tells the story of the South American country's unique Discos Machuca label. It came about after one man's bizarre odyssey into Colombia's coastal music, and across 17 tracks and two slabs of wax it offers up brilliantly raw, rhythmic and percussive music that sounds like little else. It's authentic and aged yet utterly futuristic and brims with character and vitality that transport you to a different world.

Review: Stetasonic was a short lived American hip-hop group who managed to put out three strong albums in their short time together. It was a remix of their 'Talking All That Jazz' by Dimitri From Paris that resurrected interest in the group in 1998 and now this 7" continues to shine a light on the often forgotten group. '(Now Ya'll Givin' Up) Love' is a hard hitting beat with a tense atmosphere. The crashing hits and reverberating drums break only for big stabs to light up the groove, all the while the biting rhymes keep on coming. An a cappella is provide don the flip for more adventurous DJs.

Review: You will no doubt have spotted Marcel Vogel's handiwork steering the good ship Lumberjacks In Hell, or perhaps even his choice edits under the Em Vee banner, but increasingly the Dutch artist is turning to his own name to get some fine records laid down outside the realms of pure edit territory. This second outing on Intimate Friends comes on like a mini-album of sorts, with eight tracks made up of remixes as well as originals. It's a powerful step on for Vogel, touching on a grounded variation on neo-soul with a house kick in the rhythm department. Soulful vocal spots from Mey, Milos Gersi, Gianni Tam, Khadija and Tim Jules all add to the sensation, heading away from the dancefloor as an expansive EP for all time.

Review: Little is known about Human Race and their mysterious, self-titled debut single, other than they were the house band at the Continental Club in Miami, Florida, during the late 1960s. Their sole single, which slipped out on a tiny label at the turn of the 70s, has long been sought after by collectors. Having first been reissued in 2002, it has now been given a fresh pressing. It's well worth picking up, not least for the languid and laidback title track, where scat-style vocals and glistening guitars ride a groove rich in deep, weighty bass guitar, shuffling drum-breaks and ear-catching hand percussion. As it did on previous releases, the track comes backed by an even slower, more laidback instrumental number, the sweltering, sax-laden soul sweetness of 'Grey Boy'.

  1. Hot Lovin' (Don't Stop, Don't Quit) (3:39)
  2. Shack Attack (3:20)
Review: More from the cheeky scamps behind the Disco Bits label, an imprint whose releases regularly blur the boundaries between re-editing, re-making and remixing. Here they welcome back imprint regulars Cannon & Mirrorball (we laughed, at least), who once again serve up two guaranteed disco floor-slayers. A-side 'Hot Lovin (Don't Stop, Don't Quit)' sits somewhere between disco-house and hip-house, with excitement-building raps lifted from vintage hip-hop cuts sitting atop a non-stop beat crafted from tooled-up elements from a celebratory disco favourite. As the title suggests, 'Shack Attack' cheekily blends elements from Banbarra classic 'Shack Up' and B-52s hit 'Love Shack', adding some other choice samples to create a tidy, well-made mash-up that sounds tailor-made for disco dancefloors.

Review: Canadian Jorun Bombay is a long time remix master who now lands on Soundweight Records with his latest cut up and reworking efforts. The A-side finds him take on Blondie's legendary 'Rapture', which mixed slick raps with post-punk guitars. Here it becomes sweet rolling funk gem with molten chords and plenty of soul. The flip-side is a tropical rework of 'Don't Pay Any Fuller' that ups the bass and beefs out the drums, while layering in steamy chords and percussion that brim with character. These are two more classics in the spotless catalogue of Jorun Bombay.

Review: Brewerytown Beats have got a real gem on their hands here, and one that lovers of rare and high quality funk will be falling over themselves for. Power of Attorney was a rehabilitative project of Theodore "Ted" Wing, activities director at the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution, who opened a studio in the prison for inmates to get creative. They originally released this one for Nicetown in 1973 - only 500 were pressed and sold direct from prison - and even Discogs hasn't got any recent sales records for it. The high speed jailbird funk of 'Changing Man' is a tale of redemption and is backed with the achingly soulful 'I'm Just Your Clown'.

And rightly so, because Automatic may well be even better than its illustrious predecessor. Musically, it features the same unique mix of vintage krautrock synths, jazz-funk instrumentation and enjoyably organic grooves, just this time round they've stepped it up another notch or two. The Aussie combo is in fine form throughout, dotting between the Steely Dan style warmth of 'Rare Air', the Brit Funk style weightiness of 'Vapour', the cosmic, art-rock influenced haziness of 'Downstream', the almost horizontal bliss of nine-minute epic 'Citations', the colourful live nu-disco goodness of 'Memory Palace' and the seductive sweetness of 'Automatic'.

Afro Cookie (Slofat Version) (7" limited to 250 copies)
Cat: FNR 142. Rel: 19 Oct 20
  1. Afro Cookie (Slofat version) (4:26)
  2. Psych Afrofunk (1:56)
Review: Funk Night Records continues to offer up new slabs of fabulously fuzzy funk from The Blassics, a nine-piece outfit from Finland that has been operative for the best part of a decade. Remarkably, this is the band's fifth single this year. On the A-side you'll find the "Slofat Version" of their tribute to the polyrhythmic percussion, raw bass and dancing horns of Afro-funk, which is aptly named 'Afro Cookie'. It's a chunky musical biscuit that looks set to energise dancefloors with its sugary delights every time it's dropped. Despite its title, flipside 'Psych Afro Funk' is not that psychedelic; it is, though a rather fine and pleasingly laidback ramble through the more relaxed end of the Afro-funk spectrum.

Light & Shadow

  1. Light & Shadow (3:38)
  2. Torus Blues (2:23)
Review: Earlier this year, guitarist and producer Tomayasu Takeuchi launched the Tomoyastone project with a CD-only album of psychedelic funk and soul. Here, two of the set's most vibrant and expressive cuts come to vinyl for the very first time. On the A-side you'll find 'Light & Shadow', a bustling and colourful affair in which Takeuchi's jazzy guitar solos and razor-sharp riffs rise above loose-limbed funk drum-breaks and an equally funky bassline. He opts more for a swamp funk feel on equally as impressive B-side 'Torus Blues', adding electrifying lead guitar figures and clipped chords to an altogether more humid number that's driven forwards by a chunky, hip-hop style drum-beat.

Cat: PARK 1031. Rel: 12 Oct 20
  1. Blue Monday (3:00)
  2. Bridge Over Troubled Water (2:46)
Review: Sometimes known as Park Rangers, Japanese outfit Inokashira Rangers are the world's leading purveyors of unlikely, Hammond-heavy reggae cover versions. Since first emerging five years ago, they've served up countless surprise reggae takes on tracks from the likes of Pharrell Williams, Nirvana, Sonic Youth and Underworld. Here they continue on a similar theme by re-imagining New Order's throbbing, surging dancefloor anthem 'Blue Monday' as a cheeky chunk of turn-of-the-'70s rocksteady goodness. As usual, the band's organist is in fine form, playing mazy solos that track the vocal melody found on Bernard Sumner and company's 1983 original. Over on the flip they serve up something slower and breezier: a languid rocksteady interpretation of Simon & Garfunkel's 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', this time utilizing plenty of Wurlitzer organ sounds. Ace!

  1. (It's A) Rat Race (vocal) (4:19)
  2. (It's A) Rat Race (instrumental) (4:14)
Review: Athens of the North's Euan Fryer is not the only collector and selector who believes that the Leaders' obscenely rare 1971 single '(It's A) Rat Race' should be considered a genuine deep funk classic. In fact, it was deep funk specialist Keb Darge who first brought the record to the attention of DJs and dancers in the UK in the early 2000s. Happily Fryer has tracked down the band and got their permission to reissue their sought-after classic. Formidably funky, the A-side version features fantastic group vocals rising above a bed of hazy horns, bustling drums, warm bass and razor-sharp, Blaxploitation style guitars. The accompanying instrumental take is superb, too, with a variety of woodwind and brass solos - often drenched in reverb - replacing the group's fine vocals.

  1. Beastie Boys vs MFSB - "Check It Out People" (4:19)
  2. MFSB - "People All Over The World" (dub) (4:11)
Review: On his last two singles on Soopastole, mash-up maestro DJ Soopasoul smashed together elements of Stevie Wonder and Redman/Method Man, and James Brown and Crooklyn Dodgers. For his latest trick he's decided to pepper an edited version of "People All Over The World" by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB, with raps from a stone cold classic Beastie Boys tune. It's the sort of thing that shouldn't work, but the Beasties' flows work perfectly over the flanged guitars, undulating bass and unfussy 4-to-the-floor Philly Soul grooves of the MFSB track. You can hear his instrumental rework of that track on the flip; it's so good that it's arguably worth the entrance price on its own.

Review: Second time around for Kyoto Jazz Massive man Shuya Okino's "Still in Love", a swelling, string-drenched slab of life-affirming disco-soul, featuring the fine vocals of sometime Fertile Ground chanteuse Navasha Daya. This version is not the same as the epic - and now insanely in-demand - original 2011 version, which came out on legendary Japanese label Especial. This time round, it's been given the seven-inch edit treatment by storied scalpel fiend Ryuhei The Man. His chops, nips and tucks are naturally well-judged, allowing the track's chunky, DJ-friendly drum breaks a chance to do their thing before dropping in Daya's vocal and Okino's stirring strings. It's a suitably respectful and on-point edit, as is the rework of original B-side "Look Ahead" featured on the flip.

Review: Last December, Los Angeles combo Night Owls debuted on F Spot Records with a genuine 21st century rarity: a reggae-soul cover of Donny Hathaway's 'This Christmas', featuring lead vocals from the mighty Durand Jones. For their fourth single, they've decided to deliver another cover, this time of Young Rascals' cut 'Groovin'. Their sun-soaked, rocksteady style reggae take is apparently a homage to Willie Mitchell's cover (as sampled by Wu-Tang Clan), and features Jungle Fire man Jamie Allensworth singing majestically over a jaunty rhythm track rich in heady Hammond organ sounds and toasty bass. The band's brilliant arrangement and tight-but-languid performance naturally comes to the fore on the B-side Instrumental Mix.

  2. Luther 2 (Caserta & Natasha Diggs Incense dub) (5:32)
Review: Last year Caserta and friends had their wicked way with a classic Luther Vandross acapella, brilliant re-framing the soul maestro in a late 1980s NYC club style. A year on they're at it again on 'Luther 2', which naturally repurposes another superb performance from the legendary vocalist. On the A-side, Vandross's vocal rides a smooth revivalist disco groove created by an all-star cast including Serge Gamesbourg (bass) and Natasha Diggs (piano, Fender Rhodes). It's a genuinely impressive revision that sounds like it could have been recorded sometime in the early 1980s (despite being made during lockdown). Diggs plays an even bigger role on the flip, a hazy and groovy deep house version in which she adds her own sassy spoken word vocals in reaction to the Vandross acapella.

  1. A Chance For Hope (5:44)
  2. A Chance For Hope (Prelude) (1:14)
Review: The Live Band, a disco-soul/jazz-funk outfit helmed by bassist and vocalist Kenny Chavis, released a swathe of singles and a sole album on The Sound of Brooklyn in the early 1980s. Perhaps their most potent track was 'A Chance For Hope', an emotive, two-part plea for change that opened their 1982 debut album. On this first ever seven-inch pressing the order of the tracks has been reversed, with the swelling, scene-setting orchestration and atmospheric field recordings of the shorter 'Prelude' version appearing on the flip. That leaves the main vocal version, a superbly soulful chunk of boogie-era dancefloor soul rich in addictive grooves, sweeping strings and eyes-closed vocals courtesy of Chavis, rightfully nestling on side A.

Review: Angie Stone's 'Wish I Didn't Miss You' is a gold standard R&B and neo-soul gem from the genres' heyday. It's actually an interpolated composition that draws on The O'Jays's 1972 tune 'Back Stabbers' and was, quite famously, the last ever record played by Carl Cox at the last ever party at Ibiza super club Space when it closed at the end of summer 2016. The aching vocal is perfect, the yearning bass and the tumbling, woody drums irresistible, the whole thing a stone cold classic. The flip of this reissue features a raw and steamy house mix from Hex Hector.

Review: Those who've been followed the nu-jazz sound closely over the last two decades should already be familiar with the work of Italian trumpeter Gerardo Frisina; after all, this is the Schema regular's eight studio set since the dawn of the century. In our opinion, Moving Ahead is also one of the best, with Frisina expanding on his usual Latin-jazz inspired sound via tracks that variously incorporate elements of samba house, West and East African drum music, jazz house, dub and tropical-tinged jazz-funk. Yet for all the subtle eclecticism, there are constant threads that run throughout, specifically densely packed percussion and Frisina's haunting trumpet and sax solos.

Review: For their latest 45 missive, Funk Night Records has decided to offer-up a double-header of fresh instrumental funk from two Scandinavian combos. The A-side features Finnish scene stalwarts The Blassics, whose 'Silver Mercury' offers a fiendishly fuzzy mix of low-slung drum-breaks, clipped guitar riffs and all manner of tipsy horn solos. Fellow Scandi-funk outfit Broaks take over on side B, building on the smoky, seductive sound of their recent self-titled debut album. 'Her Ability to Transform' is a weighty but sparse and stripped-back trip into hip-hop influenced Afro-funk territory that comes laden with drunken horn blasts, Tony Allen style drumming and some nimble, subtle turntablism.

Prince Alfonso & The Fever kick off with fat-bottomed swagger and earthy dub funk grooves, and Nestor Alvarez flip the script with more Latin percussion and bossa-style grooves. Brentford Rd Soul Rebels take you to a hot summer's day with their reggae soundtrack, and last of all Curtis Baker & The Bravehearts lead with a big sax line and hip swinging tambourines that all come underpinned by big bass. Varied and vital, it's a small bit of wax but it packs a big punch.

Review: London singer-songwriter Michael Kiwanuka builds on the success of his first two albums by drafting in Danger Mouse and Inflo to produce the beats that house his hugely expressive voice. That voice is of course front and centre - and whether delivering tender moments of intimacy or more breezy soul, it is always wrought with tension and emotion, slow burning and buttery smooth. The production feels timeless yet contemporary whether offering gauzy, guitar laden textures "Hero" or soaring pop ("Final Days") and makes this an album that touches on all forms of soul with equal originality.

Review: Back in June, a copy of Akira Freeze's hitherto unknown single 'Tell Me Baby' appeared on an online auction site and ended up selling for well over $2,000. It sparked Athens of the North boss Euan Fryer into action, as he tracked down the rights to the record in order to reissue it. Little information exists about the record, but we can confirm that it is utterly beguiling. A-side 'Tell Me Baby' is superb, with slick, soulful lead vocals rising above squelchy synth-bass, spacey chords, luscious electronic melodies, twinkling keyboard solos and unfussy drums. Flipside 'I Remember', an even more intergalactic-sounding affair, is arguably even better, making this a very desirable 45.
