Review: Experimental noise rock outfit Shizuka was formed as the gothic sonic outlet of one Shizuka Miura in 1993. Known for making ghostly dolls to aid her performances, Shizuka's heyday was one of mesmerizing eerieness, with her 1994 'Heavenly Persona' being the emblem of that outlook. With haunting rock instrumentation and screeching meditations on materiality's tension with the incorporeal, this is a distinctly creepy album for those unafraid to (at least temporarily) cross over to the other side.

Review: Australian rockers Silverchair made their mark with their third album 'Neon Ballroom' in 1999, which heard the band move away from their grunge roots and into more atmospheric territory. The album was produced by Nick Launay, who has also worked with the likes of Nick Cave and Arcade Fire. But this reissue more than proves Silverchair had a sound of their own, with rapturous openers like 'Emotion Sickness' and acoustic ballads like 'Ana's Song' showcasing not only the band's growth and experimentation, but their ability to oscillate between screamo and emo while indulging their most experimental impulses.

Review: The 35th anniversary edition of Tweez offers a fascinating glimpse into Slint's early sound. Originally recorded in 1989 and produced by Steve Albini, this remastered version adds new life to an album that's raw and unconventional. Slint's unique blend of punk, indie and math rock feels unpredictable, as songs like 'Ron' explode with distorted guitar and shifting rhythms, creating an intense atmosphere. The album's eerie, unsettling vibe is further emphasised by moments of spoken dialogue and ambient noise, giving it a haunting quality. The newly included tweethan mix, remixed by bassist Ethan Buckler, adds an intriguing perspective to the original tracks. This version strips back some of the Albini production and delivers a cleaner, more direct sound that allows the intricate musicianship to shine. Though Tweez may feel chaotic at times, its raw energy and experimental edge make it a compelling listen, showcasing Slint's early brilliance and setting the stage for their seminal work, Spiderland.

Review: Of all the grunge era survivors, The Smashing Pumpkins are surely one of the most grandiose. Staying true to that premise, Billy Corgan revels in a majority original line-up being back together to create a whopping triple-sized concept album which picks up the thread from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and Machina/The Machines of God. Atum is billed as a rock opera served in three acts, veering from heavier sounds bordering on metal to the catchier, poppier sound heard on lead single 'Beguiled' and into more esoteric territory. This four-vinyl edition gathers together the entire magnum opus in one lavish box set - a must-have for devotees of the veteran US rockers.

Review: It wasn't planned that Stereolab would manage to keep up their 'Switched On' series beyond the compilation's first 1992 release, but now, hey ho, we're onto its fifth edition. Unlike the first volume, the newer editions in the series such as volume 5 here lean more towards rarities, odds and ends; 'Robot Riot', for example, was originally written to accompany a Charles Long sculpture, and 'Yes Sir! I Can Moogie' was originally only released on a specific format for the Wurlitzer jukebox. Every track has a similar backstory, and it's this kind of analogue worship we love so dearly.

Review: Stereolab continue to trawl through their vast back catalogue on the fourth instalment of the Switched On compilation series. This edition, titled Electronically Processed, focuses primarily on rare and hard-to-find tracks (many tucked away on very limited seven-inch singles), with a handful of alternative versions, outtakes and previously unreleased cuts thrown in. Fans will find much to savour across the two-disc set, from Krautrock-tinged Chanson songs (see the rather fine 'Household Names' and Serge Gainsbourg-with-added-funk vibes of 'The Super It'), to more experimental instrumentals from soundtracks, and even the odd dancefloor-ready stomper ('Dimension M2'). In a word: essential.

Review: Stereolab's superb Switched On series hits the fifth volume here with another essential collection of their rarest releases. Also included along the way are some unreleased tunes and despite this being the fifth volume it is still impeccably high in standard. Just check out Autechre's remix of 'Refractions in the Plastic Pulse' for evidence - it's as thrilling as they come while Stereolab's second collaboration with Nurse With Wound is another good one. It is 31 minutes of psychedelic kraut to really lose your mind to. Fans old and new are sure to lap up this one.
