Review: So what happens when a European post-punk outfit meets an American 'ambient country ensemble'? The answer: A Nanocluster. In fact, three. This being the third. Immersion first met SUSS in September 2021, and the results were mesmerising. Three years on and the impact was no less staggering. Originally landing in September 2024, part tres takes us into the kind of musical places we're used to finding Spiritualized or Mogwai, and even then the references are misleading. For as many times as Nanocluster Vol. 3 sucks us into a thick soup of ambient and atmosphere, inviting us to get lost in opiate cloud formations, it also asks us to jump on board a stream train of rolling and driving rhythms, juggernauts gathering depth and complexity as they forge ahead. A stunning collection of highly evocative and incredible musical instrumentals.

Review: Searows is the moniker of Alec Duckart, a Portland-based indie folk star who is signed to Matt Maltese's label Last Recordings On Earth. Searows is influenced by the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver and Iron & Wine and his falsetto has a similar power and timbre to that of his formative influences. Opening track 'Martingale' is beautifully stripped down and pulls you as a listener close to his soul. Meanwhile, on 'To Be Seen' Searows comes across like he's lamenting the death of something and it is a proper tear-jerker. Contrastingly, 'Toothache' is brighter with percussion and delay-laden electric guitar showing his talent for rich, lush arrangements. Matt Maltese has struck gold here by signing Searows. Plus, they're well-suited as they each appear to enjoy delving into post-apocalyptic work. Searows' previous release (on the Last Recordings On Earth label) is called End Of The World and before starting this label, Maltese released his hit single as a solo artist: 'As The World Caves In'. They suit it all so well.

I Look After You (3:25)
Review: American indie folk artist Joan Shelley returns with Mood Ring, an emo-chromic new record. Celebrated for her soft and folky sound, Shelley's latest follows 2020's The Spur, which did develop one of her many MOs: to orchestrally augment Americana music. Yet it lacked much of the stylistic variation on display here on Mood Ring, which flaunts the breadth of her talent through chambered, variably galvanic songs. A curious formal exercise, too, the record is an LP but contains nothing on the B-side, sparing the listener the unseemly chore of having to flip it over. This is as much an "ahh"-inducing record as can be, then, with 'Fire Of The Morning' restoring the listener to health after, the lyrics attest, singeing our ears in an allegorical housefire; and 'I Look After You' concluding things on a blue, cushioned vocal ostinato.

Johnny Appleseed (4:06)
At The Border, Guy (7:02)
Review: Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros' 'Johnny Appleseed,' now released on 45 rpm, is a standout track that blends Strummer's punk roots with a newfound warmth. The song opens with a soft acoustic guitar and evolves into a vibrant mix of shimmery organs, sprightly mandolins, and a rousing chorus. Unlike the raw energy of Strummer's Clash days, this track exudes a sunny, campfire vibe. Lyrically, Strummer's incisive commentary remains sharp. Lines like "if you're after getting the honey / then you don't go killing all the bees" and the poignant "Look there goes / Martin Luther King / notice how the door closes / when the chimes of freedom ring" showcase his enduring humanist spirit. The choruses, filled with joyous singalongs, transform the song's underlying grimness into an uplifting celebration of solidarity. 'Johnny Appleseed' masterfully marries Strummer's past and present, making it a compelling and joyful listen.

Copper Kettle (4:23)
Review: Appalachian style old-time banjo and guitar player Nora Brown joins with award winning fiddler Stephanie Coleman (of Uncle Earl) to present their new EP, 'Lady Of The Lake', featuring two tight-harmony songs and two instrumental duets. Brought together by Brooklyn's tight-knit old-time music community, Brown and Coleman share a rich musical partnership; Nora is a singer and banjo player, while Stephanie is an award-winning old-time fiddler. 'Lady Of The Lake' is the first time Nora and Stephanie have recorded together since Nora's 2019 debut album Cinnamon Tree; the EP comes in four short movements, beginning with an instrumental congregative ballad in the title track, while moving into the steady movements of 'Gone So Long', on which Brown and Coleman duet and harmonise with ease, and into 'Copper Kettle', a more ruminative meditation on the North-Eastern domestic; jugs filling, whiskey-crafting, pales sloshing and lying supine by junipers.

Review: The long-awaited international reissue of Yoshiko Sai's 1975 cult classic Mangekyou (Kaleidoscope), produced by renowned composer Yuji Ohno is now here. This sought-after funk-folk album, previously unavailable outside Japan, captures Sai's ethereal voice and poetic songwriting, layered over Ohno's lush, funky arrangements. The music blends groovy, mid-tempo tracks like 'Yoru No Sei' with atmospheric ballads such as 'Tsubaki Wa Ochita Kaya', creating a dreamy yet grounded soundscape. Ohno's masterful production elevates the album, weaving traditional Japanese instruments like the shakuhachi and biwa into the mix, adding cultural depth to the already rich textures. The remastered audio highlights the intricate details of this beautiful fusion of folk and funk, giving Mangekyou a timeless quality. Long considered a treasure in Japan's 1970s music scene, original copies of Mangekyou have become rare and highly valuable, making this reissue a significant release for collectors and new listeners. Accompanied by original artwork and new liner notes by Paul Bowler, this first international edition provides the perfect introduction to Sai's mysterious, revered sound, allowing her music to be discovered and appreciated worldwide.

Review: "No-one knew the songs or what the plan was. We kept it loose and fun. This was the spirit of the sessions. No headphones, no playback, minimal overdubs, or bleed. Fast and loose," says Sam Evian of his latest record, the first to grace his new imprint, Thirty Tigers. If that's not enough to make you balk with jealously at not being invited, then the idea of Big Thief's Adrian Lenker and Sufjan Stevens, among others, debasing to Evian's house in the Catskills to examine a revamped studio, complete with vintage tape deck and console, then going wild swimming at midnight, just as snow fell, might seal the deal. The following day, work began on Plunge, a record with no real fixed direction or plan. In the end, it will - or, at least, it should - be remembered among Evian's finest offerings. A stunning collection of folk-leaning rock 'n' roll, Americana and jangly indie, you can almost smell upstate New York.

Review: On her sixth full-length album, Tokyo's Satomimagae continues to refine her idiosyncratic fusion of folk, ambient and sound collage into something singular and quietly expansive. Hailing from Japan's acid-folk scene, Satomi's music often blurs the edges between the intimate and the cosmic, the rooted and the abstract. Taba floats beautifully in that liminal space. Rather than traditional song structures, she presents Taba as a series of open-ended vignettes, each radiating with a soft-focus clarity. The arrangements are centered around fingerpicked guitar, hushed vocals and ambient textures that are deceptively gentle. Closer listening reveals a rich interplay of glitchy electronics, subtle field recordings and haunted atmospheres. Tracks like 'Many' drift on echoing voices and vaporous folk melodies, while 'Tonbo' finds a summery sweetness in its fusion of pop and pastoral folk, complete with the sound of nature rustling at its back. 'Omajinai', perhaps the emotional core of the album, embraces traditional pop structure only to dissolve it into a haze of nostalgia and spectral warmth. Taba is not background music, it asks for deep listening, but rewards you with quiet truths and melancholic beauty.

Review: Chie Sawa was indeed just 23 when she released her sole, soulful full-length city pop come soft rock record: 23 - Twenty-Three Years Old. Now the LP returns to the fore due to the reissuing efforts of one DJ Yoshizawa, whose preoccupation with music in this milieu has also extended to the likes of Junko Hirotan and Kyoko Omiya & Orange as of late. One of many rare and obscure Japanese groove records to have been featured in Yoshizawa's record guidebook Wamono A To Z - which documented many of Japan's least-spotted 'wamono disco' records, i.e. disco and funk LPs that coincided with the nascent 70s concept of wamono, which in art parlance essentially refers to the fusion of Japanese traditions with Western elements: be they ceramic, sartorial or musical. Sawa's debut here is as beguiling as it is sweet, centring on a mellow 60s/70s chic with a swinging pop rock style.

Review: You'd have to be some kind of human not to have a soft spot for Seasick Steve. Having graced us with a relentless list of amazing albums, and amazing album titles - Dog House Music, I Started Out With Nothin', You Can't Teach An Old Dog New Tricks, Keepin' The Horse Between Me and the Ground - his legacy is well and truly cast in cement. As is his reputation as a straight talking, blues peddling, guitar modifying doyen of drawly balladry and raucous barroom anthems. A Trip a Stumble a Fall Down on Your Knees is classic Steve, and yet it's also a move on from recent outings such as Blues In Mono, a collection of largely solo, acoustic, stripped back offerings. Here then we're fully plugged in and rolling deep with an entourage, the result being a record that feels as humid and atmospheric as it does late night and gruff. The quest to find America again seems to be over for now then.

Review: Sessa's Grandeza, his debut album, marks a fresh, minimalist approach to modern Brazilian music. Released in 2019, the album blends the rich textures of Brazil's musical heritage with a stripped-back aesthetic. Sessa's songs, sung in Portuguese, evoke the sensual lyricism of Caetano Veloso and the melodic grace of Tom Jobim and Arthur Verocai. Yet, the music's sparse arrangement draws comparisons to Leonard Cohen's bareness, enriched by hints of tropicalia, psychedelia, and the spiritual jazz of Moondog and Pharoah Sanders. Grandeza is an intimate exploration of love, the human body, and the vibrant hues of Brazilian music. Recorded between Sao Paulo and New York City, the album's delicate production emphasises Sessa's deep connection to Brazil's musical tradition while pushing into new, understated territory. Sessa is an amazing songwriter, known for his enigmatic and sensuous style. With Grandeza, Sessa solidifies his place as one of Brazil's most promising voices, weaving together a timeless yet refreshingly modern sound.

The release marked the beginning of Jorge's international fame and was quickly followed by acting roles in City of God and Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic where his Portuguese covers of the late great David Bowie became iconic. The record was co-produced by Mario Caldato of the Beastie Boys association and mixes up samba, funk and jazz into a timeless sound full of colour and soul for the warmer months of the year. Tracks like the anthemic title song, the funk-tinged 'Mangueira' and the infectious 'Tu Queria' remain essential showcases Seu Jorge's effortless musical charisma.

Review: Shakey Graves is proof that the digital age hasn't killed the romance in the rock & roll scene. Or at least he was a decade or so ago, when this struggling actor with musical abilities put out Roll The Bones, a 2011 album recorded on various living room floors and couches in and around Los Angeles. Not quite breaking the big leagues, nevertheless people began to hear about the collection, and soon enough the man in question was selling out music halls based on reputation alone. And The War Came is the product of what happens when a record label asks the outsider soloist to "do it like that, but bigger and in a full band setting." Thankfully, this paid off, and the second LP from the man in question is the marker of talent being allowed to truly blossom. Country, rock, indie, folk that resonates.

Review: Jeffrey Silverstein's EP Roseway is a serene and introspective collection that blends elements of ambient, country, and Americana into a cohesive and stirring sound. Named after his Portland neighborhood, the album reflects Silverstein's sense of ease and comfort, akin to cresting a hill after a challenging journey. The EP features both instrumental and lyrical tracks, each showcasing Silverstein's evolution as an artist and bandleader. With a full-band sound and the addition of pedal steel, 'Roseway' expands on the cosmic country vibe of Silverstein's previous work. Tracks like 'Gassed Up' and 'Cog In the Wheel' blend country-funk grooves with spaced-out lyrics, creating a unique and engaging listening experience. Roseway is destined to be a great example to Silverstein's growth as an artist and his ability to blend genres with ease and creativity.

Review: "My drive home from my teaching job is all uphill," says Jeffrey Silverstein; "you kind of crest over this ridge to get to where you want to go. Every moment that happens to me, I just have this sense of ease once I get to the top." With that in mind, the easy-going vibes that pervade the artist's new EP, named after his home neighbourhood in Northeast Portland, makes perfect sense. A warm embrace of contemporary Americana, these are the songs that invite you in from the summer downpour for aged bourbon and memory lane trips. Picking up where things left off on 2023's full-length outing, Western Sky Music, Silverstein continues with something of a sonic reinvention. No longer the lone wolf he once sounded like, full-band acoustics ring out across imagined deserts and badlands, wildernesses that offer vistas which go on for miles. And miles.

Review: Nancy Sinatra, with her strong, sultry voice and savvy approach, has been a pioneering force in music and business, shaping the path for future female artists while dropping many a great record. On a chilly spring day in 1966, a then twenty-five-year-old Sinatra recorded 'Strawberries, cherries, and an angel's kiss in spring...' for her third LP within four months at London's Pye Studios, known for having hosted The Kinks, Petula Clark, and David Bowie. The album, produced in just three days, features a distinct British flavour with tracks like 'On Broadway,' 'Wishin' and Hopin',' and 'This Little Bird' and also includes the classic Nancy & Lee Hazlewood duet 'Summer Wine.'

With hits like 'Sugar Town', 'In Our Time' and 'Coastin'', the album showcases Sinatra's sultry vocals, blending contemporary pop with 1920s compositions, all wrapped in producer Lee Hazlewood's innovative Dixieland jazz fusion style. This reissue, remastered from the original analog tapes, breathes new life into the tracks while maintaining their authentic charm. Featuring two bonus tracks, including the non-album single 'Leave My Dog Alone', this edition is beautifully packaged in an expanded gatefold LP format, complete with a 20-page booklet containing a Q&A with Sinatra and unseen personal photos. The eye-catching cover, featuring the groundbreaking Ron Joy photograph of Sinatra in a pink bikini, solidified her status as a fashion icon. Sinatra's confident delivery and playful, yet empowering lyrics redefined female pop music in the 1960s. As a pioneering artist, she established a unique identity that inspired generations, blending her personal struggles with a fierce independence that resonates today. This reissue not only celebrates the music of Sugar but also cements Nancy Sinatra's legacy as a trailblazer for female artists in the music industry.

Review: The 1967 album Country, My Way by Nancy Sinatra, reissued by Light In The Attic, highlights her distinctive blend of pop and country. Recorded at RCA Studios in Nashville, the album shows Nancy's ability to fuse her own style with classic country elements. The album opens with the upbeat 'It's Such a Pretty World Today' and includes the hit duet 'Jackson' with Hazlewood, rivalling Johnny Cash and June Carter's version. Nancy's take on George Jones' 'Walk Through This World with Me' and Don Gibson's 'Oh Lonesome Me' prove her command of country ballads. The album's other great tracks also include the emotional 'When It's Over' and the joyous 'Lay Some Happiness on Me'. Remastered from the original analogue tapes by John Baldwin, the reissue adds five bonus tracks, including the James Bond theme 'You Only Live Twice' and the non-album single 'Tony Rome'. With its expanded gatefold jacket and a 20-page booklet featuring a Q&A with Nancy, this reissue pays homage to her pioneering musical contributions.

Review: Ballake Sissoko and Derek Gripper's collaborative album is a magical exploration of musical synergy and virtuosity. Recorded in just three hours, the album captures the spontaneous magic that arises when two masters of their craft come together. Sissoko's mastery of the kora, rooted in the traditions of West Africa, melds seamlessly with Gripper's classical guitar expertise, creating a captivating fusion of sound. Their musical dialogue transcends boundaries, with each artist pushing the other to new heights of creativity and expression. Gripper's reverence for Sissoko's skill as an interpreter of timbre is palpable, while Sissoko acknowledges Gripper's curiosity and openness as essential to their collaboration. This album a trip through ancient and contemporary realms, where the resonances of the Manding empire blend with the textures of the guitar to create something truly unique and special.

Review: Six Organs of Admittance is the main project of the American guitarist Ben Chasny. His music is widely considered new folk but he operates differently to most, infusing various sounds like chimes, percussive elements and layered drones and here features nine new songs that explore a strictly more soundtrack approach than anything he's done before. The result is riveting, with tracks like 'Summer's Last Rays' busy tonal compositions where multiple instruments and percussion blend together to a triumphant crescendo. Whether something left on in the background and absorbing your full attention, this works well and the evolution of the band's sound is exciting. With over 25 albums to their credits, this may be their most experimental and groundbreaking yet.

Review: To celebrate 20 years of Elliott Smith's much-loved Either/Or, Kill Rock Stars presents a beautifully remastered reissue of the album. Carefully overseen by Larry Crane, archivist of Smith's estate, the original tracks are restored with impeccable attention to detail. While this version focuses on the remastered original LP rather than the expanded edition, it's still a must-have for fans old and new. The album's emotional depth and lyrical genius remain as powerful today as when it first captivated listeners. Complete with an insert of the original liner notes, this reissue serves as a timeless tribute to Smith's legacy.

Review: Squirrel Nut Zippers' third studio album, Perennial Favorites, receives its first vinyl reissue since its original 1998 release, bringing back the infectious energy and eclectic blend of styles that characterized the neo-swing movement. What sets the band apart from its contemporaries is its ability to capture the genuine spirit of hot jazz, acknowledging the darker undertones and genuine hedonism of the era. Led by charismatic vocals and backed by a tight ensemble, the album delivers a mix of catchy hooks and loose-limbed glee. Tracks like 'Suits are Picking Up the Bill' and 'Fat Cat Keeps Getting Fatter display the band's knack for solid hooks and playful arrangements, while 'Ghost of Stephen Foster' and 'That Fascinating Thing' hint at the subtext that informed swing and hot jazz. Perennial Favorites stands out as a genuine and joyous celebration of the genre. The album effortlessly dabbles in various styles, from big-band swing to jazz crooning to klezmer, all while maintaining a sense of musical accomplishment and respect for history.

Review: The second album by American singer-songwriter Anna St. Louis, In The Air is a bright-sidedly accessible eleven-tracker, and a comparatively optimistic affair to her much dourer debut, If Only There Was A River. We hear every influence from Baez to Young to Mitchell on this clear and photosynthetic country-folk quartz, which draws on themes of liberation and open-heartedness, and routinely finds such wondrous feeling-spaces by drawing on the mood of her most recent move: to a remote one-bedroom log cabin in an upstate New York wilderness.

Review: Alessandro Asso Stefana's debut self-titled album showcases his diverse musical range as he effortlessly incorporates instruments and styles from rootsy folk and primitive blues to psychedelia, soundtracks, and ambient explorations. Drawing from the Smithsonian Folkways archives, he integrates Roscoe Holcomb's historic voice for a great blend of past and present. Each track unfolds like a little musical vignette that merges various instruments from different eras-such as the Marxophone, pedal steel guitars, and psychedelic organs. The second half of the album features Holcomb's voice, bridging folk traditions with modern improvisation and in all the record suspends you between earth and sky.

Review: Sufjan Stevens is nothing short of an enigma. Capable of shapeshifting in almost unfathomable ways, he's the sort of artist that can release a spellbinding and technically astounding collection of piano duets, written to score a ballet, but give tracks names like 'And I Shall Come To You Like A Stormtrooper In Drag Serving Imperial Realness'. High brow while totally accessible, his back catalogue to date is one for which you'd struggle to find anyone who doesn't appreciate, once they've taken the time to listen. Here we are then, mere months after the aforementioned song and its parent album landed, getting to grips with another very different beast. Javelin certainly shares in the beauty that ran through its predecessor - Reflections - but whereas the last LP was relatively minimalist, here things are often the opposite. Big, rousing, 1960s-70s style pop numbers, soulful journeyman acoustic with backing chorus, theatrical soft rock and plenty more besides.

Featuring standout Stewart classics like 'Year of the Cat' and 'Time Passages' - known for their intricate storytelling and folk-rock fusion - this benighted new playlist, a greatest hits compilation, offers an arresting journey through Stewart's narrative world and melodic sensibility. An instrumental part of the English folk rock revival of the 1960s, Stewart's (not) one-hit harker-backer 'The Year Of The Cat' will be the one that most listeners recognise here, regaling the tale of an unnamed protagonist chancing upon a gauzy romantic adventure after visiting an exotic bazaar.

Review: A limited pressing of early and previously unreleased recordings from New Zealand folk outlet The Strange Girls, a band that initially consisted of Clayton Noone, Kaaterama "Motty" Morehu and Jon Arcus, who left in 2002. The Strange Girls existed on and off from 1999 up until Motty's passing in 2019 and left behind a peculiar trail of gems scattered around on a myriad of limited lathe cuts, cassettes and CDrs. 'It's OK To Be Happy' starts at the very beginning with 'Satan', the first song at the first gig they ever played, which is a lo-fi, atmospheric droner. 'Girl by a Stream' is a personal favourite, the guitars are overflowing with emotion, and had me on the edge of my seat - a common feeling throughout the project, a mixture of somber longing and road trip headboppers. The package comes also with an insert with liner notes to each track by Clayton Noone themself..

Review: Marty Stuart has certainly earned his stripes as a certified Country Music Hall of Fame, five-time Grammy winner and AMA Lifetime Achievement honouree. Now he's back with his first album in five years, backed up by his band of the past 20 years, The Fabulous Superlatives and he's sounding as vital as ever. Altitude is a widescreen expanse of an album full of the breezy, rolling Americana Stuart has forged his career on since starting out with Johnny Cash et al, but it's not a simple case of repeating the same tricks. There's a genuine hunger for new avenues of expression in these songs, and a sincerity in his voice as much now as when he first went solo back in the 70s.

Review: Jim Sullivan is the quintessential private press mystery, leaving the world an arcane psych-folk masterpiece in 1969 and vanishing in mysterious circumstances in 1975. His album, U.F.O. remained the stuff of legend until Light In The Attic were able to track down the masters. Sullivan was always on the cusp of fame, and his one shot came from this session with Phil Spector's legendary session players The Wrecking Crew, but alas the album remained just outside the rarely conquered realm of resounding success. A misfit for the times, but absolutely a gem that brings out the best of late 60s songwriting in the same breath, it's a stunning album more than worthy of the LITA remastering and attention to detail.

Review: Supersuckers' The Smoke Of Hell is the kind of raw, unfiltered chaos that still feels untouchable decades later. Their only truly great album? Maybeibut what a record to hang your hat on. Released on Sub Pop, it's packed with scorching wah-wah pedal solos and breakneck, feelgood rock energy. 'Coat Tail Rider' kicks things off, a neck-tingling blast of slamming, wah-drenched riffs that set the tone for this wildly underrated gem. Fast, furious, and full of slick licks, it's a short, relentless masterpiece that's criminally overlooked.

After earning his degree in 1983, he moved to Raqqa, Syria, and formed The Al-Rabie Band, with whom he performed Kurdish, Arabic, Turkish and Western songs. In 2011, the Syrian war forced his family to flee after his son was killed by ISIS so he resettled in Ireland, where he used music to connect with the local community, performing at various events and collaborating with Irish artists. His album I Am Kurdish blends Middle Eastern and North African music and he says is a way of spreading joy, love and happiness.
