Review: Sun Ra's musical legacy is a many-sided dice, but if there's one unanimous entry point into his astral adventure it is surely Space Is The Place. Originally transmitted to earth in 1973, this landmark record bursts with life from the opening strains of the title track in all its 20-plus-minute glory. It's no surprise it's come up for a repress via Verve's By Request series, given how essential it is to anyone's understanding of jazz at its most bold and brilliant. This is a record which transcends most typical definitions, breaking down barriers and showing what's possible if we just dare to dream.

Review: Stray Voltage is not for the faint of ear. This is triple-A rated Sun Ra at their best, namely audacious, aggressive and adventurous. Forget melodies or sing-along hooks-this collection dives deep into Sun Ra's unissued electronic explorations from the 70s and 80s when, using synths and keyboards as his tools, the one and only 'Ra didn't just play, he assaulted, provoked, and moulded raw sound into wild and unimaginable sonic landscapes. These are not songs in the traditional sense, but abstract journeys full of texture and tension that make for a thrilling glimpse into Ra's boundary-pushing experiments where structure gives way to sensation and the sheer power of cosmic expression.

Review: Light on a Satellite brings Sun Ra's music to the present as it is music played by his Arkestra over 30 years after the legendary band's founder's passing. Directed by NEA Jazz Master Marshall Allen who celebrated his 100th birthday in May 2024, the Arkestra continues to carry Sun Ra's cosmic legacy in a record made at New York's Power Station. The album highlights Allen's expertise as a multi-instrumentalist, bandleader and arranger with 24 musicians spanning four generations all helping to capture a vast, evolving jazz sound that pays tribute to Allen's remarkable life and Sun Ra's enduring influence on music and culture.

Calling Planet Earth - We'll Wait For You (23:11)
Moonshots Across The Sky (5:41)
Thunder Of The Gods (13:21)
Review: Sun Ra and the Arkestra defy convention as a non-traditional studio ensemble and each record in their vast discography proves this as it unfolds as a celestial journey. This release, Thunder Of The Gods sheds light on the group's origins. 'Calling Planet Earth - We'll Wait For You' emerges from Ra's Universe In Blue tapes, from around 1971, while the title track and 'Moonshots Across the Sky' hail from the 1966 Strange Strings sessions. Unearthed by Michael D. Anderson of the Sun Ra Music Archive, these gems showcase Ra's sonic artistry. Modern Harmonic pairs the music with visual art by Chesley Bonestell, who blends his iconic piece 'Formation of the Earth's Continents' with Ra's cosmic soundscapes to great effect.

Review: For Sun Ra devotees, the idea of a new album of unheard material is exciting enough, but Prophet is not just any album. These recordings are pulled from an unusual trip Ra and his Arkestra took to the Mission Control studio in Massachusetts in 1986, where he familiarised himself with the wild new sonic frontiers afforded by the brand new Dave Smith Prophet VS. It's a period of time less thoroughly documented in Ra's legacy, but the session brims with the electricity you would expect, with the added bonus of wild synth tones in the Arkestra paint box.

Review: Fans of Sun Ra's Space Bop and genre-bending jazz were in for a shock with Strange Strings. Even in the eclectic and sometimes baffling Sun Ra catalog, Strange Strings, first issued in 1967, is an outlier. Is it music, or just noise? Or noise as music? John Cage could not be reached for comment. For this album, Sun Ra collected an arsenal of exotic string instruments and handed them out to his Arkestra on the precept that "strings could touch people in a special way." That the Arkestrans didn't know how to play or tune these instruments was not beside the point - it was the point. Ra framed it "a study in ignorance." The result was primitive, yet sophisticated; brutal, yet highly sensitive. Cosmic ignorance being the point of the record, cosmic ignorance is equally, perhaps, *the* point of life; in an era of boundless inquisitiveness, of positivist empiricist searching, of enlightenment venturings-out, it might sometimes be as desirable, as learned or ideal, to endeavour not to know.

Review: Space is the Place! The classic piece - in a historically early version without lyrics - opens the album Paradiso Amsterdam 1970, which demonstrates how the Netherlands was first introduced to Afrofuturism - a pivotal moment in the Dutch jazz experience. It was always thought that the recordings of the long-awaited first concert that the Sun Ra Arkestra gave in the Netherlands were useless for an album release; after all, the entire Arkestra, booked by Hans Dulfer, marched among the massive crowd at pop temple Paradiso on 18 November 1970. As was their custom, they were rarely on stage where the microphones were neatly set up. Here, the Nederlands Jazz Archief trace the complete set of recorded tapes and compile an album on which the atmosphere of 53 years ago is made tangible once again.

Next Stop Mars (17:46)
Review: Sun Ra's When Angels Speak of Love, originally released in 1966 on his Saturn label, remains a rare and avant-garde gem. Pressed in extremely limited quantitiesiaround 150 copiesithis record was initially sold via mail order and at live performances. The album, recorded during 1963 sessions at the Choreographer's Workshop in New York, captures Ra's Arkestra at a time of intense experimentation. The rehearsal space's warehouse-like acoustics add an otherworldly texture to the music, further amplified by Tommy Hunter's innovative tape reverb. The album showcases Ra's controlled chaos, rejecting the label of "free jazz" while embracing liberation through structured improvisation. Tracks like 'Next Stop Mars', a sprawling 18-minute epic in its mono version, reveal bold performances from Marshall Allen and John Gilmore, pushing their horns to daring extremes. Ra's own piano workirooted in tonal centers but interspersed with thunderous rumblingicreates a dense, cosmic soundscape. With influences from contemporaries like John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman, When Angels Speak of Love sits comfortably within the avant-garde jazz movement of the 1960s, yet maintains its unique Sun Ra eccentricity. Now reissued on vinyl, this album invites listeners to experience the cosmic, pre-psychedelic atmosphere Ra and his Arkestra crafted over half a century ago.

Review: Released in 1983, Sun Ra & His Outer Space Arkestra's cosmic jazz odyssey A Fireside Chat With Lucifer defies conventional musical boundaries as it transports listeners to otherworldly realms through its avant-garde improvisations and surreal sonic landscapes. Sun Ra's visionary leadership and the Arkestra's eclectic instrumentation create a sonic tapestry that melds free jazz, electronics, and cosmic philosophy so that the long player serves as a testament to Sun Ra's innovative spirit, pushing the boundaries of jazz into uncharted territories, while offering a mesmerizing and otherworldly experience that resonates with the avant-garde and experimental music aficionados alike.

Review: In the 1980s, Sun Ra Arkestra actively engaged in a global tour. After concluding their tours of the United States and Europe that began in the spring of 1988, they made their first visit to Japan on July 30. At this time, Sun Ra was 74 years old. After completing five performances across Japan, the tour's final show took place on August 8th at Shinjuku Pit Inn. During this Japanese performance, Sun Ra Arkestra delivered a remarkable performance, playing big band jazz, including standard tunes. The concert was special by the intricate arrangements, individual virtuosity of each player and a telepathic unity within the band. The performance was truly memorable, reminiscent of their peak era, as it demonstrated the mysterious space music through the sound vibrations of Sun Ra, the "mythical scientist of sound". This LP is an event!

This gathering featured the ensemble's largest possible lineup and aimed to capture the Arkestra's expansive sound in its fullest polyphony and timeless depth. Spanning four generations of musicians and a repertoire that reflects 100 years of jazz history, the session showcases a vibrant variety of instruments and styles and the result is a profound tribute to the enduring legacy of the Sun Ra Arkestra.

Review: Shut has been busy with a great series of reissues of Sun Ra's historic recordings in Egypt. All good things must come to an end, though, and so it does with The Sun Ra Arkestra meets Salah Ragab in Egypt which was recorded with help from the Cairo Jazz Band and first put out back in 1983 on Greek label Praxis. The Arkestra first met Salah Ragab at the home of Goethe Institut ex-pat Hartmut Geerken when they toured the island in December 1971 and later bonded again in 1983. It was then that they got together for these recordings where they played Ragab compositions, 'Egypt Strut' and 'Dawn' amongst others.

Review: Introducing the second volume of Super Biton De Segou's Afro.Jazz.Folk collection, led by Malian conductor Amadou Bah, also known as 'The Armstrong Malian'. Mieruba is thrilled to present this collaboration with Deviation Records, showcasing the diverse musical roots of 1970s Mali; combining Afro-Latin percussion, Mandingo songs, jazzy brass, and funky guitar. Segou is a crossroads between the Bambara, Peul, Mandingo and Somono cultures, and Super Biton has drawn on all these traditions to create yet another rich repertoire of rhythma-lyrical wonderment.

Review: A nine-piece instrumental combo hailing from San Diego, California, The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble deliver a heady brew of jazz, funk and global rhythms on their latest offering. Recorded in their homebase of Lemon Grove, the album sees them expanding their sonic palette, drawing on library music, spiritual jazz and exotica. Tracks like 'Makin' Moves' and 'The Grifter' showcase the band's signature funk-driven energy, their tight grooves and soaring horns recalling the classic sounds of Earth, Wind & Fire and Tower of Power. But there's a more introspective side on display too, with tracks like 'Mother Earth' and 'Freddie' evoking the spirits of Freddie Hubbard and Phil Ranelin, their introspective melodies and atmospheric textures adding a layer of depth and complexity. 'Corporatocracy' is a standout, its extended tabla solo and modal funk groove demonstrating the band's willingness to experiment with unconventional sounds and structures. This adventurous spirit is a hallmark of The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, a band consistently pushing the boundaries of their sound while remaining firmly rooted in the traditions of jazz and funk.

Review: The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, a soul and funk nonnet from San Diego, have long blessed the Colemine modern funk sceptre with crumbled parfaits of funk topped with crumbly analog psychedelia and Afrobeat. With their new album, they ravage fresher sonic territories. Recorded between 2021 and 2024 in Lemon Grove, California, Gemini centres on their already-laid breakbeat-heavy funk-soul-jazz foundation, heard in tracks like 'Makin' Moves' and 'The Grifter', but they also draw influence from library music, spiritually-inclined jazz and exotica adjacents. Personifying the astrological Gemini - curiosity, versatility - 'Corporatocracy' stands out as special, welding an extended tabla solo to a wordless critique of the world's most egregious mega-firms.

Review: The British Jazz Explosion series continues to shine a light on the finest records to come from the yesteryear of jazz in ol' Blighty. On this occasion we're taken deep into the folds of John Surman and John Warren's thrilling, high-drama opus Tales Of The Algonquin. It's a widescreen affair taking big band ensemble pieces like 'With Terry's Help' and more delicate, Gil Evans-inspired pieces like 'The Dandelion'. It's a bold and brilliant record, sounding all the better for a plush 180 gram pressing that helps the music truly leap from the grooves.

Review: Education & Recreation is the new album from Melbourne, Australia band Surprise Chef, whose music is all about evoking rich moods. Their vibrant arrangements draw on 70s film scores, jazz's funky styles and plenty of the sounds and scenes that hip hop has taken most of its samples from over the years. Their instrumental sound has been honed over years of practice with Lachlan Stuckey on guitar, Jethro Curtin on keys, Carl Lindeberg on bass, Andrew Congues on drums, and Hudson Whitlock composing and producing. From chunky earworms to mediative grooves, this one has it all.

Review: Damo Suzuki was with seminal krautrock outfit Can from 1970 to 1973, lending his vocal talents to albums such as Tago Mago, Future Days and Ege Bamyasi. Exactly fifty years after the latter LP, you can hear him on this new recording described as being 'derived from fantasy'. In collaboration with Spiritczualic Enhancement Center, an eight-piece group of self-proclaimed disciples from the CAN University that gathered at Berlin-based club Arkaoda, it feaures three tracks; 'U', 'Ra', 'Beya' - excerpts from this gathering at the beginning of 2020.

Review: Isao Suzuki produced Approach in 1986. It manages to be both stylish and sophisticated as well as experimental and brave in equal measure as it pairs the serene with the thunderous across six superb songs. For that reason, it is next in the BBE Music J Jazz Masterclass Series. The young and multi-talented Isao Suzuki was joined by drummer Masahiko Togashi, keys man Hideo Ichikawa and guitarist Akira Shiomoto to cook up these contemporary jazz cuts with bendy bass, intriguing melodies and intricate percussion all taking you deep into their own new world.
