Odopt is back on Especial and this time is in collaborative mode with Sebastian Hoyos aka Sano, who is a regular on the likes of Matias Aguayo's Comeme and Munich's Public Possession. The pair cook up a fine globally-minded club trip that comes with another label return, this time from remixer Jamie Paton. The original 'Picha' first started as a sketch in 2016 then became a demo in 2019 now finally arrives on wax. It's a raw percussive workout with razor-sharp snares and plenty of cowbells. Next to an instrumental comes the Paton remix and it is a trademark deep and dubwise piece of work with widescreen dynamics.

Review: The note with this new collection from Fur:ther Sessions is a quote by the Latin thinker Cicero. "We must live to enjoy the freedom that can benefit our friends and harm no one." It is certainly something to ponder while you get lost in the deeply immersive techno that comes with it. Psyk'scaptly titled 'Static Drift' does fizz with a microscopic sense of electrical activity while Shoal's deep, speedy, meditative 'Backflash' swirls with cosmic waves. Blazej Malinowski's 'Beyond The Veil Of Sleep' has a darker core thanks to the twisted synth phrases that worm their way all through the middle and Save Your Atoll then allows a little melodic light to shine into his hallucinogenic roller 'Psyop.' Smart stuff for both head and heel.

Review: The Boom Bap Classics 7"s series was launched in 2022 and sticks to a sturdy format, always billing two double-A-listers of rap stardom from the 90s on reissued vinyl. The choices are always lesser-trodden, and buck expectational trends; even longtime hip-hop heads are unlikely to have heard of Akinyele and Sadat X, solo progeny of the Rochelle rap collective, Brand Nubian. On 'Loud Hangover', rough gangsta rap hewings prove assimilable with boom bap's tendency to show its sensitive side, with an icy yet mournful string hung and suspended a "y'knowwhati'msayin'?" laden farrago. 'Stages And Lights' leans further into emotive dynamism, with Derrick Murphy waxing real on public housing shortages, church pieties and Black culture.

This 80s soul legend is one of those whose buttery smooth vocals only ever need a little extra weight adding to the drums to make them perfect for club deployment. Here we get a version of 'Nothing Can Come Between Us' with soulful drums that have a nice dusty, lo-fi edge and some smart melodies. Review: There has been a whole bunch of quality reworks of this particular soul seductress dropping of late and we are all for it. What set cannot be elevated with some super smooth r&b vocals and smoky deep drums? You get exactly that once more here with 'Paradise' the first to get a clubby rework. The drums stay nice and lo-fi and paired back, the percussion is warm and dusty and the vocal injects the heart aching soul you need to get a crowd all loved-up. On the flip side, UK house don Ben Watt brings his Lazy Dog remix to 'By Your Side' and it is rife with funky guitar riffs and loose, playful grooves.

Review: There is a wealth of No Fuss releases all dropping this year and number 12 is a tasteful house four-tracker from various quality artists. Saison's 'Suffer' is up first as a remix from Fouk, and it is a lovely, jazzy, laidback and heartfelt sound with an infectious skip in the drums. The original is just as infused with dusty soul and warming chords and on the flip Saison remixes Pete Moss & Colette's 'Higher' 'into carefree grooves with more noodling melodies and DirtyTwo then keeps the grooves flowing with 'Rymden,' which exudes summery excellence.

Review: Todd 'the God' Edwards might now be a household name, who in particular is revered for his contributions to the early sounds of UKG, but he first rose to fame in the early 90s amid New York's bustling underground where hundreds of producers competed for recognition weekly. His innovative sound with its rhythmic cut-and-paste vocal samples, rubbery basslines and slapping percussion set him apart and in 1994, as The Sample Choir, he released this fine EP on Nervous Records.
