Review: 'The Omega Sessions' is a five-song EP recorded by Bad Brains in 1980 and released in 1997. The tracks were recorded and mixed at the original Omega Recording Studios in Rockville, Maryland, and overall, the EP contains early versions of songs which eventually appeared on later releases, including a revamped reading of 'I Against I.' This reissue marks the seventh release in the remaster campaign that is now upon us, re-launching the Bad Brains Records label imprint. Just five incendiary originals screamers, all the way through to the inimitable sass-monster that is 'Attitude', are enough to turn our brains mushy once more.

Review: This official reissue of Bela Lugosi's Dead: The Bela Session comes on black and red splattered vinyl this time around and includes previously unreleased tracks that have been mastered from the original demo tapes of their first ever recording session together. The post-punk outfit's debut single was released initially in 1979. Bela Lugosi's Dead is not only their first single, but also often gets mentioned as the first goth record. It has since been covered by Nine Inch Nails, Massive Attack and Nouvelle Vague. The rest of the tunes from the demo session remain hugely innovative, reflecting their post-punk and dark-glam style with dub reggae influences that would further evolve in their output that followed and explain why the band went on to such cult status.

Review: Hull and Leeds-based band bdrmm finally follow up their acclaimed debut album Bedroom - which was instantly passed as a modern day shoegaze classic - with a new EP. It features the recent single 'Port' as well as fresh remixes by the ever more essential Daniel Avery, plus Working Men's Club, A Place To Bury Strangers and others. That single, 'Port,' took the band in a new direction with a darker sound fun of distorted drones and beats, with howls of anguish and manic guitar frenzies. That is carried over into the rest of the EP next to some radical reworks.

Review: Popular Hull-based shoegaze quartet bdrmm are building up to their latest tour with the release of single 'Standard Tuning, arriving hot on the heels of their critically acclaimed second album, 'I Don't Know'. Written and recorded during those same sessions and very much similarly flavoured, it continues a fine vein of form right now, with high praise coming in from the likes of Rolling Stone and Consequence. This special 10" also comes with a remix of the live favourite 'Alps' by Ninja Tune/Cambria Instruments electronica specialist Nathan Fake.

Review: Beach House gets in on this year's Record Store Day hype with The Become EP, which is a collection of five songs from the Once Twice Melody sessions. Say the band, "We didn't think they fit in the world of OTM, but later realized they all fit in a little world of their own.' As such they are presented here with their own scuzzy and spacious sound and special capturing of live playing spirit. The tunes are outliers for where the band is generally headed right now but still offer plenty of fans old and new to enjoy.

Become (5:44)
Review: 2022's stunning album Once Twice Melody was a fine example of Beach House doing what they do best - living bang up to that name, with intimate-but epic instrumentation falling somewhere between surf-y jangle and grand shoegaze. 'Become' is definitely on a similar tip, and as such feels much like an extension of the long form.
Dig a little deeper, though, and scratches begin to show. While the full-length record represented Beach House reaching for the stars, or at least the moon, and stepping into the role of festival headliners, here the sense of pure confidence and occasion is less pronounced. That may not be a bad thing, mind, because while Once came across like a finished article, refined and prepared, things here seem somehow rawer, as though we're sitting in on a session as oppose to getting the signed off product.

Review: Beautify Junkyards and Ghost Box label co-head Jim Jupp is Belbury Poly here as he serves up a cover of The Incredible String Band song 'Painting Box.' It was original by written by Mike Heron and is a beautiful piece of acoustic guitar work with tender vocals and sweeping string sounds that come over like an adult lullaby, all soothing sounds and enchanting moods. The flipside is an original by Beautify Junkyards, 'Ritual in Transfigured Time,' which was produced by Joao Branco Kyron and is another perfectly lilting groove for lazy days.

Review: Indie darling Beck has been 'Thinking About You' on what is his first new music in some time since he dropped his GRAMMY-winning Hyperspace album. This single gets pressed up to a limited edition golden-brown 7" to mark the much-loved artist's birthday and it is a sublime bit of prime and emotional Beck as his heart-tugging best. The ballad has some sombre harmonica, acoustic guitar lushness and was recorded in the same room as his classic 'Sea Change'. On the flip side is his GRAMMY-nominated cover of Neil Young's 'Old Man' which is a wistful sound with rich tones.

Review: Who said music has nothing to say these days? In an age of plastic people distracted to the point of distraction from the shocking atrocities, privilege, inequality and prejudices that are frogmarching society into a death trap of a future, Benefits stand out like a beautiful sore thumb - battered, bruised, and British, they are the epitome of an 'issues band' and we welcome any opportunity to listen and write about them.

Like some sort of rabid Idles, here the Middlesbrough one man crew make noises that defy logic, twisted cacophonous bars of ravenous distorted sound, and then layer council estate spoken word over the top. Angry enough to make you feel like there is still hope, and innovative enough to make you wonder whether - in an increasingly risk-averse music industry - enough people will get to know and love them. Make sure you do.

Review: Word of a sixth album from Big Thief comes with their latest track 'Vampire Empire'. First debuting live on Stephen Colbert's Late Show in March 2023, its lyrics express an inner conflict at "vampire empires", of the tendency for relationships to err towards toxic, parasitical and contingent mindsets and a rallying cry for infinite and unbroken loves. A fixture of their many live shows for at least a good few years now, we're pleased to finally be seeing the official release of this gem.

Review: In December 2001, at Maida Vale Studios, Bill Callahan's Smog delivered a raw, haunting session for the BBC. Alongside bandmates Jessica Billey, Mike Saenz and Jim White, Callahan's performance embodied a Lynchian mood of U.S. darkness in the wake of 9/11, covering Stevie Nicks, Lou Reed, and Smog tracks with a sombre, tour-worn edge. Callahan reflects, "It's all live, no overdubs. The session felt encapsulatedisomething foreign, yet intimate." The band's reimagining of 'Beautiful Child' in a minor key, the fiery rendition of 'Cold Discovery', and the moving take on 'Jesus' highlight the raw, unfiltered essence of this live recording.

Review: Billy Nomates is coming off the back of a hugely acclaimed album in 2002. That was the self titled work on Invada Records and now she follows it up with a new EP that has already had heavy plays on BBC 6Music. Billy even stepped in for Iggy Pop on his show and impressed with her selections. Here the artist develops her unique sound and unflinching lyrics and says of the music that it is "predominantly about communication breakdowns; personally, mentally, physically. A strange thing to happen while communication has never had so many channels. Perhaps we need a direct line."

Oral (Olof Dreijer remix) (5:22)
Review: Bjork and Rosalia team up for the limited marble vinyl edition 12" double-sider, 'Oral', now coming packed with a stunning remix by Olof Dreijer from The Knife. The record is described by its releasers OLI as not just a single release but a "call to arms", with 100% of the profits being funnelled directly to AEGIS, the Icelandic charity dedicated to eradicating intensive fish farming in the country. 'Oral' itself is now a staple of the latest incarnation of Bjork's ever-mutant career, consummating her and Rosalia's recent rapport; a sabre-wielding, purblind aesthetic - befitting also of another of Bjork's collaborative contemporaries, Arca - fits seamlessly with the elegiac reggaeton of the song. Dreijer's remix is rabid and wonky by comparison, its draggy, morphemic rhythms belying Bjork and Rosalia's equally wetted vocals, producing a wacky litany of faunal electronics and whizzing FX.

Review: Reading shoegazers Blueboy are the real deal - top-tier within its genre up there with the likes of Lush, Slowdive and Cocteau Twins. They left behind a remarkable back catalogue with releases on the legendary Bristol label Sarah Records and the Shinkansen label in the 90s. To our joy they've returned to do some live shows and release their first new music in 25 years in the shape of this banging single 'Deux'. Anyone who has even the slightest inclination towards the dreamy ambiance and power that the shoegaze genre offers can do a lot worse than buying 'Deux' - it is a slice of nostalgia and has a timeless quality to it. The B-side is less poppy but highly atmospheric and evocative. A triumphant comeback.

Review: Blues Lawyer returns to Dark Entries with a fresh new 7" that revives some late summer sun with lovely alt-pop grooves. This new one comes hot on the heels of their debut on this label and expands the Blues Lawyer universe across four tunes that were recorded in the final days before Elyse Schrock - the band's singer, songwriter, drummer, and music video creator - left her Bay Area home of ten years to head for somewhere cheaper to live. There are new songwriting styles evident here on tunes like 'True Love's Only Name' which guitarist Ellen Matthews developed with lyrics by Miller and singing from Schrock. It is one of a great mix of tracks that show real musical development from Blues Lawyer.

Review: Being a 'supergroup' - as Boygenius trio Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus are commonly described - has its pitfalls, one of which is finding time to record and promote your music. It was for this reason that it took the threesome almost five years to record their debut album, The Record, which was released to critical acclaim (the NME called it an 'instant indie classic') earlier this year. The fact that 'The Rest', an EP of unheard songs (literally - no previews were available online prior to release), has followed so quickly suggests that it was recorded at the same time. Either way, it was produced by the band alongside a team of six producers) and delivers more memorable songs in their now familiar American indie-rock style. A treat for fans, all told.

He's crafted plenty of seminal tunes and now is back once again with Falcon for this new and lush deep house 12" on Smugglers Way. It bears all the hallmarks you would expect of the pair: big loopy loops, filtered chords and house drums that get you grooving. 'Elevation' is more blissed out and Balearic and 'Step By Step' is downtempo lushness.

He is already known for his work with Surprise Chef and Karate Boogaloo and here steps into the spotlight as a vocalist delivering introspective lyrics in a fragile falsetto. Where Do We Go From Here? (4:06)
Review: The 60s Liverpudlian rock quartet are famed for their song '6 Day War', which has been sampled from the likes of DJ Shadow in Tokyo Drift and Pusha T on his album released earlier this year. This track is undoubtedly a classic, written in the aftermath of the ongoing Arab-Israeli war of 1967, '6 Day War' is one of the best anti-war tracks of all time. The slow jam-rock ballad comes from the band's album 'Oh What a Lovely War!' released in 1973 which has not been released in Britain until now, making this a landmark pressing. The record is a psychedelic soft-progressive rock LP with emphasis on heavy guitars like in 'Lay it Down' and even pulls from folk rock in 'Dirty Delilha Blues'. Colonel Bagshot were almost criminally overlooked, though their music seems to consistently stand the test of time and it's easy to hear why. The sound is quintessential Liverpool rock, even down to the naming conventions being evocative of The Beatles.

Review: Landing with a curbstomp the year before their debut full-length Matando Gueros, 1992's iMachetazos! served as only the second 7" EP (of what would become a lengthy discography) from drug cartel death metal outfit Brujeria. While performing with their faces covered and under gangster pseudonyms, anyone within the scene knows the collective alumni boasts (or has at one point) Fear Factory's Dino Cazares and drummer Raymond Herrera, as well as Billy Gould (Faith No More), Nicholas Barker (Cradle Of Filth Dimmu Borgir) and Jeff Walker (Carcass). Lyrically touching on tops of Satanism, torture, gang violence and drug dealing, all united through Mexican imagery and gangster aesthetic; when coupled with the band's extreme form of death metal imbued grindcore, the resulting menace is akin to waking up in a mosh pit during Sicario.

Review: The second part of a series of essential early records by Texas's Butthole Surfers features three of their most unhinged releases: 1985's Cream Corn from the Socket of Davis, 1987's Locust Abortion Technician, and 1988's Hairway to Steven. These records capture the Butthole Surfers' evolution from Texan misfits to renowned provocateurs of the American underground scene. In 1985, they were the darlings of hallucinogen-fueled punk enthusiasts. By 1988, they had toured Europe, gained international recognition, and established a base in Driftwood, Texas. Cream Corn from the Socket of Davis offers a tantalizing glimpse into the Butthole Surfers' chaotic genius. Featuring two tracks from Rembrandt and two new recordings from their home studio in Winterville, Georgia, the EP showcases the band's unique blend of precision and madness. 'Moving to Florida' stands out as a surreal, Beefheart-esque trip, while the other tracks are equally mind-blowing. This EP serves as a perfect, bite-sized introduction to the delirious brilliance that the band would continue to unleash in their subsequent releases. These albums are remastered by Golden himself adding to the importance of these.

Review: XL boss Richard Russell's Everything Is Recorded returns with 'Porcupine Tattoo', an unexpected yet compelling collaboration with Bill Callahan and Noah Cyrus. The track, released via XL Recordings, came about during sessions at LA's infamous Chateau Marmont hotel, when Russell asked Callahan who he'd most like to write a song for. Callahan's surprising answer: Noah Cyrus. The result is a stripped-down folk tune with subtle gospel undertones, featuring Callahan's deep, pitched-down vocal layered alongside Cyrus' delicate voice. Russell's production, iminimal yet atmospheric, ihighlights the contrast between Callahan's gravelly tone and Cyrus' ethereal presence. Recorded during a rain-soaked week, the track evokes a sense of melancholy and intimacy. On Side-2 'Norm', is a tribute to comedian Norm Macdonald, featuring only Callahan. This release continues Russell's tradition of creating genre-blurring, evocative collaborations.

Review: Byron Bay 60s-psych revivalists Babe Rainbow are the first band to be signed to King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard's newly created p(doom) Records. When they announced this album at the end of 2024, with the release of single 'Like Cleopatra', it was the label's inauguration. The mystery in all of this, though, is how one earth does King Gizzard find the time to run a label when they release album as quickly as Mo Salah scores goals? Anyways, they clearly have a great ear as they've done the right thing in putting out this album of psychedelic acid pop, with its lysergic jams 80s synth-funk workouts. For all its nostalgia, there are parallels to more modern neo-psych bands that are really appealing, too. 'Aquarium Cowgirl' could have been a great release for the now disbanded London-based band Childhood, thanks to the reverb-y transcendental falsetto and floaty layers of dreamy guitar. Ultimately, this is a great, uplifting mood antidote to all the post-punk and shoegaze that's cornering the market at the moment.

Review: The acclaimed 2007 album by Babyshambles, Shotters Nation, captures the longstanding second band led by enfant terrible Pete Doherty and company, at the height of their pop powers. With four songs also co-written by Doherty's then-girlfriend Kate Moss, some of whose live performances also feature on the record, Shotters Nation includes lead singles 'Delivery' and 'You Talk' in its setlist. Both singles, though having invited comparisons to surefire rock greatness over the years - from The Cure to Lou Reed - proffer a sleazy-peasy energy smelted in the furnace of Doherty, Ficek and co.'s collective discontent: "here comes a delivery/straight from my heart of misery", goes 'Delivery', such dour lyrics set against rather thrashy guitars, capturing the bleaker side of the grim thematic coin that also surfaces hedonism and gregariousness on the other - peak Doherty, as stated.

Review: Originally distributed through SST Records in 1986, I Against I served as the seminal third full-length from Washington D.C. hardcore punk legends Bad Brains and is still the band's highest selling album to date. Noted for branching far beyond the already expanded parameters of reggae-infused punk, and embracing elements of soul, funk and alternative metal, the album was a shock at the time to the devout fans who were spoiled by the refinement of their sound on Rock For Light, yet in the decades since, the LP has been cited as an integral influence by members of Cro-Mags, Sepultura, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Rage Against The Machine to name a small handful, while artists such as Machine Head, Jeff Buckley and Lamb Of God have even covered the iconic title-track. Newly remastered with updated artwork, this Punk Note edition is a vital collection piece for both newcomers and fanboys who've already spun their OG copy to death.

Review: The highest selling album from reggae-tinged hardcore punk pioneers Bad Brains arrived courtesy of SST Records in 1986, and marked the band's further decimation of genre parameters. Following on from the major success of their refined sophomore endeavour Rock For Light, which cherry-picked some of their preceding self-titled debut LP's strongest cuts to re-record under the tutelage of The Cars' late, great Ric Ocasek, by the time it came to enter the studio to lay down what would grow into the iconic I Against I, the band had begun to embrace more outsider influences from the realms of soul, r&b and even funk metal; all genres that would inform the sonic makeup of their third full-length. With the title-track covered from everyone from Jeff Buckley to Lamb Of God to Denzel Curry, the utter sonic fearlessness exuded throughout scoffed in the face of hardcore purists who lambasted the effort upon release, while its insidious influence can still be heard today from Rage Against The Machine all the way up to hardcore's modern day flag flyers Turnstile.

Review: Following the major success of 1983's seminal sophomore effort Rock For Light, in which reggae-hardcore heroes Bad Brains would work studiously under The Cars' Ric Ocasek, and even re-record some of their self-titled debut LP's strongest cuts such as 'Sailin' On' and 'Banned In D.C.'; the hard left turn of their now acclaimed third full-length I Against I initially shocked many a hardcore purists upon its initial 1986 release. Arriving courtesy of SST Records, the album showcased an even further disregard for genre or scene parameters than the band had exuded up to that point, absorbing elements of funk, soul, r&b and, most notably, alternative metal, with the material falling somewhere in line with the likes of Living Colour, yet a far scuzzier version. While early reception was somewhat maligned and controversial, with the band even back-peddling on 1989's Quickness, there's no denying the sprawling influence the record has had in the decades since, with covers of the title-track coming from Jeff Buckley to Denzel Curry, while its sonic presence can be heard all the way up to modern hardcore stalwarts such as Turnstile. Not to mention the iconic lore behind the vocals to 'Sacred Love' being recorded by H.R. over the phone from prison while serving time on a marijuana distribution charge. How can you get any more hardcore punk reggae than that?

Review: An album that requires little to no introduction, but we'll give it a stab anyways: Both essential and alien to the scene, the self-titled debut Bad Brains LP will forever be heralded as one of the cornerstones of the hardcore punk movement. While originally honing their skills as funk/jazz group Mind Power, it wouldn't be until guitarist Dr. Know attended his first hardcore shows that an intense reinterpretation of punk tropes would be conceptualised within his madcap mind, leading to an incomparable collection of speedy, energetic and most important of all, musical compositions that would reshape the very foundations of a scene many stagedived from. Crammed full of raw, scuzzy classics such as 'Sailin' On' and 'Pay To Cum', yet interspersed with reggae and dub numbers including the tranquil 'Jah Calling', the Rastafarian hardcore ethos the band would coin on their seminal debut sent ripple effects still felt throughout the scene today. Not only their definitive work, but one of the most vital, pioneering and representative projects of the era.

Review: Described as "the bastard child of a Ramones/Strokes one night stand", London's Bad Nerves take the early 60s rock n' roll power pop that birthed the later punk scenes and bend them into an ouroboros of tail-eating, hook-laden punk rock swagger. Following on from their 2020 self-titled debut full-length, their aptly titled sophomore effort ("that was never meant to exist") Still Nervous arrived in 2024 armed to the teeth with fuzzier riffs, bigger hooks, more breakneck pace and an endorsement from Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong. Boasting cuts such as the mega anthem 'You've Got The Nerve', this is as to-the-point, unpretentious and garage-punk as it gets.

Review: Bad Omens expand their sonic universe with this ambitious triple LP, an experimental companion to 'The Death of Peace of Mind'. Featuring reimagined tracks, interludes, and collaborations with artists like ERRA, Poppy, and HEALTH, this release ventures into bold new territory. 'C:\Projects\CJOST\BEATDEATH' sets an ominous tone, while 'V.A.N (feat. Poppy)' injects a dose of dark pop energy. The band explores their heavier side with 'Anything > Human (feat. ERRA)', and 'Nervous System (feat. iRis.EXE)' delves into electronic textures. Live versions of fan favourites and collaborations with the likes of Let's Eat Grandma add further depth to this expansive project. This is Bad Omens at their most ambitious and experimental, pushing the boundaries of their sound and captivating listeners with a truly immersive experience.

Review: After over four decades out of print, Henry Badowski's 1981 debut Life Is A Grand finally comes reissued by Caroline True Records. Despite cult status, this is a can't unhear record whose privies are never lost on those who love it. Badowski built a quiet reverence for himself over the years, eluding mainstream rediscovery while gathering admiration from those drawn to its peculiar charm. Though he eventually slipped away from music and began a succession of other jobs - fans often wondered how such a gifted musician could just disappear - Badowski was known to have been a teenage bassist in Chelsea briefly linked to The Damned, later stepping away from punk's sharp edges to craft something far more whimsical and idiosyncratic. Drawing on his affection for Roxy Music, Ian Dury and Jethro Tull, he wrote, arranged and played nearly everything on the album himself, rom the baroque pop of 'Swimming With The Fish In The Sea' to the instrumental strut of 'Rampant'. Rich in synth flourish, sardonic lyricism and melodic invention, and now pulled up by the pinky and thus saved from the gorge of obscurity, Life Is A Grand returns with its sly wit and strange beauty completely intact.

Review: RECCOMENDED
Despite her personal challenges, it's safe to say that Julien Baker sounds like a decent person. The sort of artist whose bandmates and peers have observed distributing gig riders among local homeless people. A musician who isn't afraid to not only put it all out for us to see, but swing the spotlight round to fully focus on and analyse herself, in public.

That's certainly the overriding feeling you get from Little Oblivions, her latest long form outing. Themes of guilt, elusive redemption, personal inconsistencies and failings are constant, as if we're being asked if we can tolerate these traits and behaviours before signing up to the fan club. Musically, it's just as memorable, Baker - largely known for her pared back approach to country-infused indie folk rock - has put everything into this, switching gears to focus on louder, larger, more complicated arrangements, and pulling it off with aplomb.

Review: "I'd prefer it to be called just a country album," said TORRES of her collaboration with Baker, nearly a decade in the making, "but I'm proud to have made a 'queer country' album." TORRES had the initial idea to turn to the genre, inviting Baker to collaborate not only because of her shared southern roots but also because she'd also had a similarly religious upbringing that ultimately saw sexual orientation judged and condemned. The result is some deeply autobiographic songwriting on tracks like 'Tuesday', about a traditional family's rage at discovering their daughter was gay, the lilting 'Sylvia' and 'Sugar In The Tank', with pedal steel meeting acoustic guitar strum and very intimate sounding vocals. Bound to cause controversy in certain areas of the US, but it's got the quality and distinctive flavour to stand its ground.

Review: Lewis' gentle and bewitching L'Amour, which came complete with a bizarre backstory involving the disappearance of the blonde-haired would-be-matinee-idol on its sleeve, was one of the surprise delights of the year. Yet the release of the hitherto unsuspected follow-up Romantic Times, which was originally recorded in 1985, only adds to the mystique surrounding this off-kilter auteur. The abstract croon and expressionistic mood may remain, yet the pastel shades and beachside calm of his earlier effort are gone, replaced by brooding atmosphere and vocals that betray a troubled soul beneath the luxurious veneer. Residing somewhere between lounge lizard thrills and outsider art chills, Romantic Times is a portrait of a true one-off.

Review: Bananagun's long-awaited follow-up Why is the Colour of the Sky? reflects the upheaval and transformation the band experienced in the four years since their debut. Released during Melbourne's strict lockdowns, the group was scattered, making it impossible to rehearse or record as they once did. However, that tumultuous period also led to a new creative process. Gone are the meticulously pre-planned tracks of their debutithis time, the songs were jammed, written, and recorded on the fly, capturing raw energy and spontaneity. The result? An album brimming with bold, jazz-infused freak-beat experimentation, groovy rhythms, and spiritual overtones. It's a departure from the sunny afrobeat of their debut, showcasing a more adventurous and human side of the band.

Review: Where would we be without our mothers? Literally nowhere, of course, given the medical facts of life. But psychologically and spiritually somewhere very different, too. Just ask Devendra Banhart, whose latest, heartbreaking and poignant LP packs intimidating strength and thoughtful themes by the birth-giving load. Here the synths that dominated more recent albums are replaced by instruments best described as "a bit earthier", with strings and woodwinds joining brass and keys. Despite its title, this album is less a dedication to motherhood itself and more a meditation on emotional ties and links in general. "Memorial", for example, is about the death of Banhart's father, while elsewhere we are told love is like "crowd surfing in an empty club". As per usual, Banhart's songwriting verges on mania, recalling the late-Daniel Johnston's razor sharp observations wrapped in innocent imagery, while the instrumentation conjures Burt Bacharach and the like.

Review: Although it was reportedly recorded in a "cabin in the woods" and fuelled by "nights listening to the Grateful Dead", Venezuelan-American singer-songwriter Devendra Banhart's latest album is a far more drowsy, dreamy and immersive affair than you might expect. Produced by label-mate Cate Le Bon (who also contributed instrumentation), Flying Wig somehow sounds contemporary despite being rooted in a mix of the woozy sound-worlds of Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel's more downbeat mid-80s moments, classic sixties folk-rock and the kind of heart-aching, country-tinged AOR ballads that were once a feature of late-night AM radio. It's beautiful and beguiling, basically, and never wavers from its distinct sonic blueprint.

Review: Banks arrived shrouded in mystery a year or so ago, the lack of information surrounding her contributing to an enigmatic aura that functioned as a kind of feedback loop for an instant fanbase entranced by her confessional, razor-sharp avant-soul torch songs. Although the enigma may have slightly lessened, the LA singer's sultry talents sound just as powerful as they did on her emergence, and the release of Goddess sees them crystallise into a confident statement of intent that establishes her as an artist worth taking very seriously. Emotionally raw yet seductive in their electronic soundscapes, these songs pack a punch that belies their smooth surroundings, and her deep, sophisticated voice always sounds engaging rather than overly stylised. That album title may just be less cheeky than it seems.

After emerging in the early 2010s, she gained a cross-genre following with her downtempo, alt-r&b style and her debut album, Goddess, earned critical acclaim and gold certification with hits like 'Before I Ever Met You' and 'Warm Water.' BANKS followed three more albums and now drops her fifth which is another subversive blend of all sound that have gone before with an evolved attitude and still a great number of hooky groves.

Review: Banners' new album, All Back to Mine, radiates with vibrant melodies and infectious production. Michael Nelson, the artist behind the stage name, infuses his pop music with a sense of boundless energy and joy. Following his introspective EP I Wish I Was Flawless, I'm Not, this album shines with anthems like 'Name in Lights' and 'Have You Ever Loved Someone,' which blend uplifting choruses with layered synths and driving rhythms. Nelson's voice weaves through a mix of euphoric and emotionally charged tracks, creating a dynamic listening experience. Songs such as 'Life's Just No Fun' and 'Anywhere for You' showcase his ability to convey deep emotional resonance through poignant lyrics and vibrant instrumentation. 'In Your Universe' stands out with its shimmering percussion and heartfelt lyrics, capturing the album's blend of hope and introspection. While All Back to Mine may not reinvent pop music, it effectively delivers an emotionally engaging and uplifting experience.

Review: Barenaked Ladies' Barenaked for the Holidays is a festive, fun-filled album, now making its debut on vinyl. Released in 2004, this 20-track collection combines the band's original holiday songs like 'Christmas Pics' and 'Green Christmas' with seasonal classics such as 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' and 'Auld Lang Syne.' Known for their witty, playful style, the band delivers lighthearted arrangements full of acoustic warmth, reminiscent of their early album Gordon. The album features a balance of Christmas and Hanukkah tunes, showcasing a variety of influences. Standards like 'Carol of the Bells' are delivered seriously, while 'Jingle Bells' and 'Rudolph" get the goofy, rollicking treatment fans expect. Highlights include a jazzy duet with Sarah McLachlan on "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and a whimsical collaboration with Michael Buble on 'Elf's Lament'. Barenaked for the Holidays is a welcome return to the band's playful, less serious side, creating an enjoyable, family-friendly listen that's perfect for fans who've missed the band's lighter touch in recent years.

Review: 10 years on since their smash No.1 hit 'Pompeii', a song that has solidified itself in UK pop history in its own right, British singer-songwriter Dan Smith's brainchild Bastille's Bad Blood X still packs the same punch. It's easy to see why 'Pompeii' was such a runaway success, the insanely catchy hook and the dynamic vocal chants over that thudding drum beat...everybody knows it. To commemorate a decade since this defining record, Universal are producing a limited gatefold coloured LP, that will include a brand new 7" vinyl with two never-before-heard demos, 'RACING HEART' (Laura Palmer Demo) / 'POET' (Dan's Bedroom Demo) both recorded in Smith's parents' loft. Also in the package will be a 16-page 12×12 book featuring new, unreleased artwork, notes from each band member and handwritten annotations and a track list from Smith - as well as a 12×12 double sided insert with an alternative cover and more unarchived art. The contents of the ten-song album, described as "song poems," are a personal and transformative exploration of both the external chaos of the pandemic and the intimate journey of becoming a mother. Featuring the title track, which is already available, the album promises a diary-like intimacy and a rich collaboration with musicians like Brad Oberhofer, Mary Lattimore and Jack Falby.

Review: The Dream of Delphi is the sixth album for the Los Angeles singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Bat For Lashes. Critics have likened her music to the work of Joni Mitchell, Nico, Siouxsie Sioux, Bjork, Kate Bush, Cat Power, PJ Harvey, Annie Lennox, Tori Amos, and Fiona Apple and this album reflects on the conception and birth of Khan's daughter Delphi during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. Samples of the album are still guarded closely upon writing this but expect more great songwriting, electronic elements and a strong post punk influence. With a release date of late May, this indie exclusive is pressed on red vinyl.

Review: Don't believe everything you read - the fifth Bat For Lashes album confirms this girl (or woman) found herself musically and thematically some time ago, freeing up creative energy to explore new approaches to deliver her often mournful, always heartfelt songs inspired by personal crises and private longings. On this outing there's more than a hint of 1980s pop evident in the mix. Shades of Prince ("Feel For You"), Madonna ("So Good"), Bowie's Berlin days and electro-era Gary Numan (the stunning, infectious instrumental "Vampires") cast the record in a nostalgia that suits the sense of yearning that always seems to pervade Natasha Khan's work. Simply name-checking reference points is lazy and unfair, though. This is an incredible collection of tracks moulded in the artist's own image - bold, beautiful and instantly captivating. Then again, it would be surprising if anyone had expected anything less.
