Review: The new Bat For Lashes album, her sixth, is an ode to motherhood, created during Khan's experience giving birth to her daughter Delphi during the COVID-19 pandemic. The contents of the ten-song album, described as "song poems," are a personal and transformative exploration of both the external chaos of the pandemic and the intimate journey of becoming a mother. Featuring the title track, which is already available, the album promises a diary-like intimacy and a rich collaboration with musicians like Brad Oberhofer, Mary Lattimore and Jack Falby.

Review: Don't believe everything you read - the fifth Bat For Lashes album confirms this girl (or woman) found herself musically and thematically some time ago, freeing up creative energy to explore new approaches to deliver her often mournful, always heartfelt songs inspired by personal crises and private longings. On this outing there's more than a hint of 1980s pop evident in the mix. Shades of Prince ("Feel For You"), Madonna ("So Good"), Bowie's Berlin days and electro-era Gary Numan (the stunning, infectious instrumental "Vampires") cast the record in a nostalgia that suits the sense of yearning that always seems to pervade Natasha Khan's work. Simply name-checking reference points is lazy and unfair, though. This is an incredible collection of tracks moulded in the artist's own image - bold, beautiful and instantly captivating. Then again, it would be surprising if anyone had expected anything less.

Review: The new Bauhaus BBC Sessions release hears British goth pioneers Bauhaus at their most vital, documenting the three-year period that they swept the airwaves like vampire bats with a hearse's worth of recordings made for UK radio. Spanning early post-punk urgencies to the relatively more textured darkness of their later work, these sessions were recorded for shows hosted by John Peel and David Jensen, flapping through alternate takes of 'Double Dare', 'In the Flat Field', and 'Third Uncle'. Together with a recent vinyl reissue of a 1983 performance at the Old Vic in London, which snapped a shot of Bauhaus at the peak of their dramaturgic snarks, both releases provide a compelling, rough-edged, bouffant counterpart to their studio albums, before goth went bird's nest: Bauhaus live and direct, with all the mood, menace and momentum fully intact.

Review: Captured in San Francisco in December of 1982, only over six months before their original dissolution in July of the following year, this live performance from gloom maestro goth rock pioneers Bauhaus leans heavily on material from their (at the time) two-month old third full-length The Sky's Gone Out including their opening cover of Brian Eno's 'Third Uncle' and 'Silent Hedges', as well as 1981's career height sophomore classic Mask, with cuts such as 'In Fear Of Fear', 'Kick In The Eye', and 'Hollow Hills' making appearances. Some love is shown to their debut In The Flat Field with the inclusion of 'Spy In The Cab', but most noteworthy is that the set features an early live unveiling of 'She's In Parties', which wouldn't see release for another four months with the band breaking up just a week before the single's adjacent album Burning From The Inside would drop.

Review: "Bauhaus are the founding fathers of goth rock, creating a minimalistic, overbearingly gloomy style of post-punk rock driven by jagged guitar chords and cold, distant synthesizers. Throughout their brief career, the band explored all the variations on their bleak musical ideas, adding elements of glam rock, experimental electronic rock, funk, and heavy metal.

It's an excellent single-disc overview of the group's brief career, containing all of their essential songs, from ''In the Flat Field'' and ''Bela Lugosi's Dead'' to ''Ziggy Stardust'' and ''Burning from the Inside.'' It's nice that there's finally a thorough single-disc retrospective of the groundbreaking goth quartet.
Stephen Thomas Erlewine - All Music

And finally the 1998 compilation makes it onto vinyl. The tracks have been re-sequenced for the format and there's a special substitution of an unreleased hybrid mix of ''Bela Lugosi's Dead'' featuring a 1982 studio vocal over a live backing track. The two disc set is packaged in a gatefold sleeve and, with under 20 minutes playing time per side, the cut is loud with minimum compression.

Review: "A document created in the shadow of incredible darkness. One from which the creator hadn't planned on escaping and still doesn't. Hence the title of the album. It is the result of an illness that I've battled my whole life. It isn't something that the world has done to me. It's the world I live in, and it's no one's fault."
So says Brian Christinzio, AKA BC Camplight, of his sixth album. As ever, it's a musical masterpiece packing dense layers of instrumental experimentation and theses-worthy lyrical poignance. An artist who has never played by the musical rules, fans of strong juxtapositions will again be in there element, with a tracklist that spans grunge-y garage rock, twisted barroom journeyman stuff, theatrical guitar pop, and plenty more. But the sounds themselves are only one half the genius. When it comes to arrangements, things are as playful as they are innovative, keeping listeners guessing as to how structures will pan out.

Review: When Yorkshire-based four-piece bdrmm released their self-titled debut in 2020 via Sonic Cathedral, it was a homage to the power of foreboding reverb-soaked guitar music. Now with their 2024 release - after they moved tentatively towards it with their 2023 follow-up I Don't Know - they have ventured into soundscaped dance music kept within a pop context. It's still got a darkness to it and the guitar is there but it's given no more importance than the synths and arpeggiators. Overall, having more tools to sculpt their sound with makes them sound liberated. Lead singer Ryan Smith has one of the most evocative voices in British music, leaning into the stoner feel that reverb provides, but still retaining an ear for melody - as if to say there's no shame in pop. Having the lead singer of Working Men's Club - Syd Minsky-Sargeant - as a guest is a huge get for them and suggests that bdrmm have elite taste for collaborators as well as the ability to recognise when the time is right to shift from what they first set out to do when they formed. This is a rebirth and they sound all the better for it.

Review: To categorise bdrmm as "British shoegazers" may be accurate. Or not. There has to be a limit to how far a genre definition can be stretched before it begins to include a whole load of other noises and styles. In the case of Microtonic, the sonic palette is at once broader than most understandings of the sound and yet it's hard to pinpoint a more apt tagline. Sometimes sweeping statements work for a reason. Arguably their most far reaching work, and certainly up there with their finest and most epic hours, bdrmm don't reject the sound of the cosmos space told through soaring guitars and lofi distortion - the title track, 'In The Electric Field', which features Olivesque, and 'Lake Disappointment' are just two cases in point. But then opener 'Goit', with Working Men's Club's Sydney Minsky Sargeant, 'Snares', and 'Clarkycat' embrace other moods. Intelligent dnb, industrial-edged electro, chill out house, to name but a few.

Review: Beabadoobee third studio album follows her 2022 effort Beatopia and her 2020 debut Fake It Flowers, delving deeper into lyrical vulnerability, navigating the complexities of young adulthood. Produced by Rick Rubin and longtime collaborator Jacob Bugden, the album was recorded at Rubin's Shangri-La studio in Malibu. To mark the announcement, Bea released the lead single, 'Take A Bite.' Reflecting on the track, she describes it as an introspective look at her thoughts and unhealthy lifestyle, finding comfort in chaos. The song features melodic guitars and Bea's delicate vocals, capturing her journey through familiar yet turbulent emotions. This Is How Tomorrow Moves promises to be a poignant exploration of self-acceptance and growth.

Review: Beach Fossils are regarded as bedroom-pop trailblazers from Brooklyn. They were one of the most influential and well-loved New York bands of the 2010s and manage to find some of that form here on new album Bunny. As inventors of jangle pop, they revisit that with some extra warm and stylish songwriting, lush dream-pop moods and hints of post-punk energy. Lyrical themes include the joys of being a father and other equally brilliant but less noble subjects such as how good it is to smoke a cigarette out of a car window with friends.

Review: Beach House return with another inevitably washed out dream pop pipe-fantasy - and perhaps a magnum opus, being 18 tracks long - 'Once Twice Melody'. We can confirm the LP scales a more minimal and wondrous sound than their career-definer, 'Depression Cherry'. As ever, noir slow jams canopy an ever-ghostlier vocal palette on lead singles like 'Over And Over' and 'Superstar'. Even a live string ensemble was used in its recording. Stonkingly, it comes in various limited-edition formats. One, the "gold" edition, includes a gold and clear 2xLP record in a gold-embossed, hinged box. The "silver" edition is housed in a silver embossed black sleeve. Oh, and there's a cassette version too, for all you indie heads out there.

Review: Here comes a special double vinyl box set edition of Beach House's latest album, Once Twice Melody, which was the first one the band themselves have ever produced in its entirety. It was recorded in three different locations - Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, United Studio in Los Angeles, and Apple Orchard Studios in Baltimore. The band used a real and full live string ensemble for the first time, too, and David Campbell took care of arrangements. It is a double album that features 18 songs presented in four chapters that take in many different sound and structures centred around acoustic guitar, some around drums, and some around electronics.

Review: It may be debatable whether B-sides still exist in the here and now, yet beneath the very slightly prosaic title of this compendium lurks the work of an outfit who - despite having essentially surfed along a very definitive wave of sun-dappled languour since their inception - are capable of delivering offcuts that are every bit the equal of most folks' hits. True, the Spinal Tap insult of 'the musical growth rate of this band cannot even be charted' could be applied to Beach House, but when their catalogue over the ten years of their existence esentially consists of a variety of themes on opiated bliss, we're only too happy to embark on the ride.

Review: Despite having found initial attention via the modern British folk scene that also spawned Mumford & Sons, Laura Marling et al, Bear's Den have managed to carve our a distinct identity for themselves, and this second album sees them building on this with aplomb and ingenuity. Maintaining their trademark heart-on-sleeve approach, and harnessing their Ivor Norvello-worthy songwriting chops to electronic soundscapes and sweeping melodic traditions that extend through hazy recollections of the '70s and '80s, 'Read Earth & Pouring Rain' is the sound of this duo striking out as global contenders for widescreen pop supremacy.

To catch them live is no doubt one of the most explosive musical experiences of the last 50 years. If you never have, fear not, because an album like this one takes you back in time to be there in the flesh, in this case at Club Citta in Kawasaki, Japan in September 1992. It was a performance broadcast live on radio and it comes now on nice heavyweight vinyl with plenty of lesser-known tunes in amongst some of the bigger moments. A real must for collectors and fans alike.

Review: Beastie Boys' classic 1994 album, Ill Communication, is getting a special deluxe edition reissue on vinyl to celebrate its 30th anniversary. The remastered 3xLP set resurrects a rare version initially released as a limited run in 2009 that includes 12 bonus tracks - rarities, a live version of Check Your Head's 'The Maestro,' B-sides, and remixes - all adding to what is already a spectacularly varied and wonderfully sprawling album. Ill Communication was the fourth studio album by the New York-based hip-hop ensemble, featuring hit singles like 'Sabotage' and 'Get It Together.' This reissue follows recent re-releases of other Beastie Boys' albums, including Hello, Nasty and Check Your Head and further highlights the group's 'giants of the 90s' status.

Review: Ill Communication, the Beastie Boys' fourth studio album, remains a hallmark of their creative versatility. Released in 1994, this groundbreaking record merges hip-hop with punk rock, jazz, and funk, marking a significant shift towards live instrumentationia progression from their previous album, Check Your Head. Co-produced by the Beasties and Mario C, the album showcases their talent for genre-blending, featuring iconic tracks like the explosive 'Sabotage,' the funky 'Get It Together' with Q-Tip, and the raw 'Do It' with Biz Markie. The album also includes jazzy breakbeat grooves such as 'Root Down' and 'The Scoop,' along with instrumental jazz-funk tracks like 'Ricky's Theme' and 'Sabrosa,' and even nods to their punk roots with 'Heart Attack Man.' With further contributions from Money Mark, Eric Bobo, and Amery 'AWOL' Smith, Ill Communication is a testament to the Beastie Boys' ability to innovate. Now available on cassette for the first time ever, it continues to resonate as one of the band's most diverse and celebrated works.

It's joyful, party-fuelling stuff but usually with a social message snuck in for good measure, which is just how we like it. Full marks to anyone who, upon blind taste test, immediately jumped to the conclusion this was indeed Beck. Fear not, that's less a result of his iconic and infinitely listenable voice not shining through, and more down to what else is in these arrangements. Working with legendary studio genius Pharrell Williams (who co-produced and co-wrote), you'll also find Coldplay's Chris Martin and Georgia, US rapper and drummer Terrell Hines involved here, amongst others. Together with these names we're taken into a soaring, immersive and glittering world of sophisticated but chart-friendly anthems, from clap-a-long number "Die Waiting", to the epic space-rock closer "Everlasting Nothing".

Review: There's always an awful lot to talk about with Beck - an American rock icon whose enigmatic character is defined by the fact labels like 'American rock icon' are way too simplistic. Hyperspace couldn't be a more useful example, a record that turns its attention to a sci-fi R&B pop sound that's an immediate giveaway of Pharrell Williams' involvement as producer on more than half the album.

All of which would be jarring if this weren't Beck, a proper shapeshifter. Pulling it off with far more than aplomb implies, it's a warm, sexy evening ride through the e-funked up streets of LA on a warm night exceptionally juxtaposed with a lyrical flavour that's sorrowful and reflective, the product of both the artist's failing relationship at the time of writing and his well-documented understanding of the human condition.

It comes on Dine Alone Records after the release of singles 'Shine On' and 'Something Lost + Something Found' back in summer. The record was further teased with 'Birds of a Feather' (featuring Ashleigh Ball from Hey Ocean and vocalist Jay Malinowski) and 'Beyond Four Walls'. All those tracks are included alongside some superb new songs. They add up to a reggae and ska classic that leans on the old school but also brings plenty of fresh new styles.

Review: Been Stellar's debut album, Scream From New York, NY, is as a thrilling, assured indie rock release, with ten tracks that blend visceral melody with raw power and showcase the band's live strength and studio control. The album's songwriting is highlighted, with tracks like 'Start Again' delivering waves of distortion and feedback, while 'Pumpkin' explores the space of shoegaze. 'Can't Look Away' and 'All In One' offer noise rock assaults, contrasting with the pop-infused 'Sweet,' which adds a different flavour to the mix. The mix of different styles and sounds must make for an engaging listen. Overall, it is a searing and magnetic debut that captures the essence of New York.

Review: Sunshine Hit Me is the debut album from the British band The Bees. A testament to summery jovialty and DIY ingenuity, the album is as raw and earthen as it is soulful, with the band at the time only made up of founding members Paul Butler and Aaron Fletcher, who wrote, performed and recorded the album alone using a home studio in Butler's parents' garden on the Isle Of Wight. Don't be confused by the LP's normative categorisation as "indie rock"; deft listeners can hear everything from reggae to neo-soul in this one, flaunting the pair's impressive musical education going into its making.

Review: Second time around for the Bees' terrific debut album, Sunshine Hit Me, which wowed critics and buyers alike on its initial release way back in 2001. The epitome of a surprise hit with admirably DIY roots - the duo behind it, Paul Butler and Aaron Fletcher, famously recorded it in a limited home studio built in the back garden of a residential house on the Isle of Wight - the album has lost none of its allure all these years on. Woozy, summery and lo-fi, with hazy horns and glassy-eyed vocals rising above backing tracks that variously doff a cap to soul, rocksteady, ska, 1960s dream pop, psychedelia and a wealth of subtle global musical influences, Sunshine Hit Me is a warming, smile-inducing treat. This edition also boasts a sextet of bonus cuts, which seem to be a mixture of B-sides and tracks plucked from the pair's archives.

Review: This is the seventh album by chamber pop titans Beirut. The group, who are led by Zach Condon, have created their largest album to-date and it's among their most profoundly beautiful. The music originated in 2023 when a contemporary circus director, based in Sweden, who was creating a show based on an adaptation of a novel by German author Judith Schalansky about loss and impermanence asked Condon to write music. And who better than Beirut to score that theme. Condon's vocals are starkly beautiful with the tenderness of early choir music. The track 'Caspian Tiger' is among the most cinematic of the tracks on here with resplendent Renaissance influences and direct lyrics that are tear jerking and feel genuinely moved by the extinction of the great mammal, but could so easily be about a close friend lost.

Review: B-sides and rarities spanning Beirut's entire recording career are compiled on this elegant-looking and musically exceptional double outing. Artifacts was initially conceived as a vehicle for pushing out some early work in a formal release, but quickly grew to what you see before you know - 26 songs, 17 of which have never seen been available before now. When you consider what all that means a purchase becomes essential. Zach Cordon began trying to realise his sonic dreams at the tender age of 14, under the Beirut moniker, and has slowly developed from solo project to full blown band. What's here helps tell that tale, and the impact is profound - a spectacular journey from indie to world to folk to electronica and baroque pop by the heads who pioneered that beguiling combination.

Review: Hadsel, Zach Condon AKA Beirut's first album in four years, is named in honour of the place in which much of it was recorded, a remote Norwegian island that the neo-folk artist stayed in back in 2019. The tranquillity of his surroundings, as well as access to limited instruments (a lo-fi drum machine, a church organ, a basic synthesiser and his trusty acoustic guitar, is reflected in the beauty and slow-burn nature of the music on show, which naturally pushes Condon's distinctive, emotionally charged vocals to the fore and tends towards the atmospheric and musically opaque. The results are genuinely beguiling, with our picks of a very strong bunch including 'The Tern', where Condon's voice sails above sustained organ chords, a tribal-tinged rhythm track, and life-affirming vocal harmonies, and the brass-enhanced warmth of 'So Many Plans'.

Review: We get it - there's a lot of music released everyday and it can feel overwhelming to sort the wheat from the chaff. There's no doubt, however, that Ride guitarist Andy Bell has delivered the goods here. His latest solo effort is helped by some influential collaborators. Proto-shoegaze cut 'I'm In Love...' features none other than One Dove's Dot Allison and Neu!'s Michael Rother. It's a beautiful reworking of The Passions' 1981 hit, certain to strike a chord with those who love the dreamier side of shoegaze. Bell has mixed and produced this record himself and proves himself to be a tireless conduit for beautiful ideas and sounds. Long may he keep producing music this good.

Review: Following a few years spent focusing on his ambient, drone and instrumental shoegaze focused GLOK project, former Ride man Andy Bell has finally got round to recording a new album of songs. Titled Sonic Cathedral, the album is undeniably nostalgic in tone, not only reacalling the jangly and sonically dense days of shoegaze and jangly indie-pop, but also the funkier and more intoxicated indie-dance records of that period (think Weatherall productions and remixes of the period, the Stone Roses and - whisper it quietly - Candy Flip). It's a bold and hugely enjoyable blend, with Bell sashaying between the tactile, Spiritualized-ish 'The Notes You Never Hear', the krautrock-goes-funky flex of 'Space Station Mantra', the Beck-esque 'Music Concrete' and the Tony Allen/Afrobeat-influenced 'Apple Green UFO'.

Review: Andy Bell is a blessed man: he had none other than Neu!'s Michael Rother supply guitar parts to the opening cut 'I'm In Love' (a cover of The Passions' post-punk classic). Moreover, One Love's Dot Allison is guest vocalist and supplies ethereal tones to the breathtaking song. It opens the gate beautifully for the heady collection of entirely new material that follows. It's an album that navigates Stone Roses grooves and Arthur Russell style experimental textures and works just as well for close listening as it does moodily-lit dancefloors. The Ride guitarist is on the form of his life here and you could do far worse than letting this wash all over you.

Review: The Glasgow-based indie-pop mainstays have continually challenged themselves throughout their life as a band, and Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance is another step forward, again proving themselves to be not as easily pigeonholed in the insular worlds of twee indie as their detractors might have imagined when they emerged as a cult concern in the late '90s. "Enter Sylvia Plath" even takes their trademark stylings to the dancefloor, no less than a disco stomper redolent of a more bookish Hot Chip, whilst "The Party Line" is proof positive that their pop muscles can be formidable when flexed. A charming collection for diehards and new converts alike.

Now a solo project of founder (and lead singer) Pedro L Ortega, the set was inspired by a promise he made to his dying mother to record more music. It's a gloriously summery and sun-soaked affair all told which subtly expands Ortega's musical horizons to include more jangly guitars, multi-coloured, Gigi Masin style keyboard textures, glistening, guitar-led ambient bliss reminiscent of Jonny Nash, and sunrise-ready soundscapes that recall the beauty and brilliance of modern Balearic heroes Seahawks.

Folds' clever songwriting shines throughout the album as he weaves poignant lyrics with catchy melodies and infectious hooks. From the anthemic 'Brick' to the playful 'Kate,' each track showcases the band's unparalleled musicianship and dynamic range. The album's raw emotion and authenticity still resonate and create an intimate connection that transcends its era. Review: Bruno Berle's No Reino Dos Afetos is a stunning example of modern Brazilian pop, blending heartfelt emotion with a wide range of musical influences. Hailing from Maceio, Berle brings the warmth and beauty of his coastal home into every corner of this album. Released in a vibrant blue vinyl repress in 2024, the album is a journey through soft, intimate compositions that explore love, tenderness, and beauty. Berle's smooth, golden voice is the heart of the record, effortlessly gliding over songs like 'Quero Dizer', where the mix of lo-fi production, kalimba, and guitar creates an irresistible, laid-back groove. His raw emotional power shines in tracks like 'O Nome Do Meu Amor', an acoustic tearjerker brimming with sincerity. Berle's versatility is clear, moving from indie rock on 'E Preciso Ter Amor' to the sun-soaked soul of Joao Menezes's 'Ate Meu Violao', which opens the album with a nostalgic touch of 70s MPB. His take on West African highlife in 'Som Nyame' adds even more richness to the mix. Every note feels personal, capturing both simplicity and depth. This album solidifies Berle as one of Brazil's most exciting young talents.

The album's haunting chamber pop soundscapes, filled with yearning lyrics and spontaneous emotion, set it apart from typical indie folk releases. Backed by lush orchestral arrangements, Recomecar feels deeply intimate yet expansive, offering a fresh take on melancholic songwriting. Bernardes' ability to merge indie sensibilities with rich, classical instrumentation makes this debut a standout, cementing his reputation as a unique voice in contemporary music.

Review: This is The National's Matt Berninger's second solo album and treads a sonically similar path to the Cincinnati band, with some forlorn lyrics and gloomy delivery. Berninger is clearly a fan of plumbing the depths of his heart and fortunately has the talent to be considered one of the top merchants of emotion around these days. Of the tracks here, 'Breaking Into Acting' is a beautiful slice of stately Americana and his vocals interlock beautifully with Meg Duffy, aka Hand Habits. For something more energetic try 'Bonnet Of Pins' as it's a pulsating chamber pop cut with thumping rhythms and a tear-jerking yet rabble rousing atmosphere. Live, this one will ultimately go down a treat.

Review: Matt Berninger, voice and wordsmith behind The National, returns with his sophomore solo effort Get Sunk: for his sharp enough to cut adamantium and melodies that linger like motion ghosts, Berninger digs deep into the questions of identity: who we once were, what happiness really means, and the search that never ends. The album doesn't spell out autobiography but channels a narrator exploring selfhood amid possibilities and pitfalls, balancing on the edge of joy and despair. Collaborating with Hand Habits on 'Breaking Into Acting', and from the reefing 'Inland Ocean' to the reflective 'Times of Difficulty,' Get Sunk is a true personal snorkel dive, tracing both bound ties and yet unwondered roads.

The band hailed from Paris and were hugely popular in the 80s after coming together around frontman and vocalist Francois Guillemot (who, rather fascinatingly, went on to become a researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research as a specialist of Vietnam.) Guitarist Laurent Katracazos also features on the album as do various rhythm machines and later a saxophone, all of which are wrapped around committed anti-fascist and anti-racist lyrics.

Together the pair form Better Oblivion Community Center, who recently scored some airtime on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert with a beaty rendition of their dust-kicking vocal number "Dylan Thomas". The album delivers a bevy of duets and folk-tales with references to '90s pop rock and grunge never that far off, and it's best heard on "Dominos" and the cutesy synth-play of " Exception To The Rule".

The Dutch band's Carol van Dyk and Peter Visser admit that they were "green as it comes" when they record it but that didn't stop them cooking up plenty of infectious hooks and jangling grooves run through with elements of prog, pop and folk. It's a nostalgic trip to tune into this one three decades on, but one that is well worth making.

Review: Big Boys are punk visionaries from Austin in Texas and they sure made a big bang with what they described as their "debut, sophomore, and final album." This bunch of renegades came up in the late 1970's Austin scene. The band was led by the dynamic Randy "Biscuit" Turner, alongside Tim Kerr, Chris Gates, and various drummers like Rey Washam. They infused their music with skate funk, which means they somewhat deviated from hardcore norms at the time. Their diverse sound touched on post-punk akin to The Minutemen and inclusion in Thrasher magazine's cult "skate comps" catapulted them to fame among 80s skate punk enthusiasts. Renowned for engaging their live audiences like few others, they fearlessly explored new musical realms, even tackling Kool and the Gang covers at one point.

Review: London based black feminist punk trio, Big Joanie, are set to follow up their exceptional 2018 debut, 'Sistahs', with a much more nuanced, dynamic collection of material on the upcoming sophomore effort, 'Back Home'. Produced and mixed by Margo Broom (Goat Girl, Fat White Family), the new project showcases an expansive push in every sonic direction; embracing the lo-fi, fuzzed out din of their Nirvana and Husker Du influences with increased abandon, while the strong pop sensibilities are more flagrant and emboldened this time around. A balancing act between grungy dance-punk, and wistful yet authentic pop, elevated by razor-sharp wit and earnest vulnerability, 2022 appears set to be the year that Big Joanie become a commonplace name in all the right circles.

Review: It's not hard to understand why people so often ignore album release blurb. Sales-y, hyperbolic, and on more than the odd occasion rather poorly written, it's hardly required reading in order to get the most out of the record. That is unless it's Big Thief's 'Two Hands', a collection of music that genuinely makes more sense when you know the back story. For one thing this long form offering is arriving just months after its predecessor, which is always either the sign of a band that don't need big ideas to facilitate rapid-fire output, or a band that have so many big ideas they literally can't stop the momentum. This is a case of the latter. Timescale aside, "Two Hands" genuinely feels as though it was born in the Badlands, epic songs that invoke endless vistas across barren settings in a way that makes you feel as small as you actually are in a global context. Like cosying up in a log cabin away from the chilly endless dark of a desert night.

Review: There's plenty of anticipation around Big Thief's third record U.F.O.F., and we can say with confidence that it delivers on every front. A solid expansion of their last record, Capacity, U.F.O.F. for the most part goes deeper into diverse sonic territories that's emotionally raw and rich, calling to mind Elliott Smith, Joni Mitchell and various other accomplished singer songwriters especially in songs like "Contact" and "Cattails". Elsewhere, "Strange" and "Orange" provide a backing that seems more upbeat on the surface, yet the varied vocal technique of Adrianne Lenker, ranging from a whisper to a vulnerable bellow keeps us firmly captivated. The album really shines through when it reaches for slightly louder soundscapes, best heard on "Terminal Paradise" and "Jenni" (with the latter reminding us of "Washer" by Slint). All in all, U.F.O.F. will be a record that entrances you with its subtle yet haunting charm.

Review: In honour of Record Store Day 2025, Canadian-American alt-rockers Big Wreck have decided to reissue one of their most popular albums, 2012's The Albatross. Available in limited numbers (only 1,000 of this CD version was pressed), it not only includes the freshly remastered original album in full, but also three alternate versions, rare bonus cut 'Fade Away', and a raucous live recording of title track 'Albatross'. The original album remains a timeless alt-rock classic where raw guitar riffs, bluesy solos and Ian Thurnley's distinctive lead vocals wrap around thickset bass and punchy drums. For proof, check standouts 'Wolves', 'Glass Room' and the rowdy 'The Rest of the World'.

Review: Canadian rock outfit Big Wreck celebrates this year's Record Store Day with the first-ever vinyl release of their acclaimed Albatross album. This deluxe anniversary edition includes a bonus track, 'Fade Away', as well as alternate versions by Eric Ratz and Ian Thornley, plus a live recording from Suhr Guitar Factory. The original album came back in 2012 and saw Albatross earn chart-topping success and critical praise for its soaring guitar work and powerful vocals. They make just as much of a mark now, more than a decade on and with the addition of the new cuts, this reissue brings all new depth to the record.

Review: This was where it all started, not only for arguably the most important feminist rock band of all time, but for an entire musical movement. Originally released on cassette in 1991, Revolution Girl Style Now was an incendiary squall of furious ire, set aflame by DIY spirit, rulebook-shredding rage and Kathleen Hanna's fearsomely magnetic charisma alike. To this end, this collection of mighty calls to arms has stubbornly refused to date, standing proud as more than an essential Riot Grrrl document, rather a thrilling and timeless testimony to the power of punk rock at its most righteous.
